Happy First Day or whatever. I’m a bit hungover from partying with the neighbors. We were making merry at the new and improved side-yard bar, and some sumbitch wandered over with schnapps. (Oh right, that was my husband. We’re too old for this nonsense!)

I was reviewing the college bowl game action on tap for today and became aware that Jerry Falwell’s diploma mill has a D1 football team that is playing on New Year’s Day. What the hell? Anyhoo, Go Ducks!

War for Ukraine Day 676: Ukraine Has Entered 2024 Bloodied But Unbowed

A screen shot of Nikita Titov's drawing of a Ukrainian yalynka (Christmas and New Year's tree). The tree is black on a white background. Within the tree are white outlines of explosions from Russian attacks and a small child kneeling in the bottom center with its hands over their eyes. The tree is topped with a Ukrainian tryzub (trident).

Dr. Luba sent me the image above with the following explanation/description:

In Ukraine, in modern times, every home has a “yalynka” for the holidays. We would call them Christmas trees, but in Ukraine, during Stalin’s reign, New Year’s trees were encouraged, and NYD became a major holiday, with gift giving, feasting, etc.

So this seemed apropos

Very apropos, which is why we are starting with it tonight. Thank you Dr. Luba!

New Year address by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy

31 December 2023 – 23:39

Dear people! Dear Ukraine!

The year 2023 is coming to an end. Another year of our independence. Another year of our fight for independence. Another year of war. War for our land. For our freedom. For each other.

Asking millions of Ukrainians about this year, you will get millions of different answers. Everyone will recall something of their own. Someone close to them. Everyone has something to smile about. Because it worked out. And everyone has something to cry over. Because of losses. Each of us fought, worked, waited, helped, lived and hoped this year. In our own way. Everyone.

But everyone will find something common to all Ukrainians in this year. The major result of the year, its main achievement: Ukraine has become stronger. Ukrainians have become stronger.

676 days ago, we were all challenged. Missiles were flying at us from all sides, and an enemy onslaught was approaching from all directions.

676 days ago, at this very place, I addressed you, Ukrainians, and reported the beginning of a full-scale war. We did not know then what lay ahead. Many did not believe we would last a week. Few believed we would make it through 2022, let alone standing through 2023. And today we are facing 2024.

Ukraine is alive. Ukraine lives. Ukraine fights. Ukraine advances, Ukraine overcomes the path. Ukraine gains. Ukraine works. Ukraine exists. And all together, this is not a New Year’s miracle, not a fairy tale, not magic, but the merit of each of you. Each of the millions of Ukrainians. Everyone who throughout this year, day and night, proved: Ukrainians are stronger!

When, at the beginning of 2023, in January and February, we surmounted, without exaggeration, the most difficult winter in history. When we proved that Ukrainians are tougher than cold and darkness. Stronger than power outages and blackout threats. Ukrainians will cope with any energy shortage as they have no shortage of resilience and courage. We did not fade away in the darkness. The darkness did not engulf us. We defeated the darkness.

Our energy sector withstood. Our country stood strong. It overcame this year. And I want to thank all those who made this possible in the first place.

All our Security and Defense Forces. I am proud of every Ukrainian warrior. As long as you stand, Ukraine stands. I know how courageously and heroically you defend us. All this time. The time of tough, fierce daily battles. From the first minutes of January 1 until now, even on New Year’s Eve, when the Ukrainian warrior fights and cannot afford weakness. You are holding back the evil that has become even greater. But it couldn’t do anything more. Because you fought on every front and every street of ours, in each of our houses. You were strong. You did not surrender a single blue-and-yellow heart. Not a single kilometer of our freedom. It is you. All our warriors. Each and every one who proves: Ukrainians are stronger than evil.

And I want to thank all our people, our strong nation. Everyone who is here today. Everyone whom I want to tell: I am proud of all of you. Every Ukrainian citizen. Every strong person. And I know how difficult it is for everyone today. Everyone who has put their lives on hold. Who postponed everything for after the victory. Everyone who says: “I am working, and this is not a feat, but a duty. I am donating, and this is not a feat, but a norm.” Everyone who works and fights every day because they know that wars do not end by themselves – they are ended. And victory is not received or granted – it is gained.

And to this end, today we have to live by the rule: you either work or you fight. Because we have the world’s largest terrorist organization against us. And it is obvious how much more we have to do, how much more active we have to be, how much stronger our unity and struggle have to be.

This is known to everyone who does not ask themselves daily ‘what can I do?’ but lives by the formula ‘I must do more than I can.’ Because that’s what the word ‘to win’ means. In our language. To overcome yourself, to overpower, to make an extraordinary effort and to do more than it seemed at first glance. Because in reality, each of us is capable of more.

Our heroic people prove this every day. Our heroes. Our medics, saving warriors on the frontline and civilians in peaceful cities and villages. Those who prove: Ukrainians are stronger than pain, wounds, and death. Our firefighters and rescuers, who show that Ukrainians are stronger than fire and rubble. Those who prove: Ukrainians are stronger than any circumstances, stronger than hopelessness. Our teachers, who educate children despite the war. Online, in person or by setting up a school in the Kharkiv subway. Our railway workers, our drivers, communication workers, engineers. Our volunteers, our diplomats, Ukrainian business, everyone who pays taxes and provides jobs to the Ukrainians, everyone who sows, reaps and gives Ukrainians bread, everyone who provides shelter to Ukrainians, everyone who makes shells and ammunition, repairs and builds, restores and revives, works every day, proves every day: Ukrainians are stronger than fatigue. And therefore, Ukrainians are stronger than this war. February 24 convinced us of this.

The war taught us a lot. It showed us a lot. It did a lot to us, changed us.

The war, unfortunately, separated families, took away sons and daughters, and at the same time united us into one big family. And on February 24, we made a choice. And the cold, emotionless truth of the war’s realities is that this choice was different.

Someone stayed here, in Ukraine, someone fled, someone was besieged, someone evacuated their children, someone went to the front, someone rescued others, someone saved their family, someone left and stayed there, and someone left and returned home. To Ukraine.

And these are stories of people, stories of men and women. Those who could not stay at home and went to the front. And those who could no longer stay abroad, somewhere far from home, and returned. After realizing and saying to themselves: “I do care. I am needed. Needed for victory, needed for Ukraine.” Those who proved: I am stronger than fear. Those who proved: I am stronger than doubts. Because I know that one day I will have to ask myself: who am I? To make a choice about who I want to be. A victim or a winner? A refugee or a citizen? And everyone knows the answer. And the answer is Ukraine. Because Ukrainians are stronger together. So it’s time to be together!

And this is the time that all Ukrainians who are now in the temporarily occupied territories are eagerly waiting for. All those who have not lost Ukraine in themselves. Who have not allowed their minds and hearts to be occupied. All those who cherish Ukraine in their children. Cherish our flag. Hold onto the belief in Ukraine’s return. Knowing that all expectations are not in vain. And I want you to feel our gratitude to you for this. And remember: without each and every one of you, Ukraine will be incomplete.

And today we are celebrating the New Year together. According to our time. And at exactly midnight we will sing our anthem – the anthem of Ukraine together. With love for Ukraine. And this love is stronger than the occupation. This love for Ukraine is the driving force that the invaders fear. And Crimea, Donbas, Luhansk region, Berdyansk, Melitopol, Mariupol – all ours – know this: the enemies truly fear you a lot. Not international organizations with political appeals, but the Ukrainian spirit of Ukrainian people who have proven, are proving, and will prove that we are stronger. Stronger than captivity. Stronger than the enemy. Stronger than this war. Because that’s the kind of people we are.

And such people inspire the whole world – you can see that. And such a state is welcome in the European family. This is evidenced by the decision to open negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. A decision that others have been pursuing for decades. A decision that was once hard to believe, about which skeptics claimed: “This is not fast, not tomorrow, almost impossible. Do not hope, do not believe, do not expect.” But Ukraine of 2023 is determined, resolute, consistent, decisive, and persistent. Ukrainians are stronger than any blockades and vetoes, disbelief or skepticism. A country that is implementing extremely difficult and necessary reforms and changes during the war. And as a result, a country that is now awaited in the European Union. And these are not just words – these are official decisions, official documents. And this process will definitely have a logical conclusion – full-fledged membership in strong Europe. A powerful one. From Lisbon to Luhansk.

And this is a historic victory. There have been many such diplomatic victories this year. And all of them were not easy for us. The Ukrainian Peace Formula, which has already been endorsed by 80 countries. Security guarantees for Ukraine, which have already been acceded to by three dozen countries. The “grain corridor” that we were told of: “You will never make it without Russia.” We were blocked and blackmailed, but we found a way out. We did, and our corridor is functioning, and by today, it has handled nearly 13 million tons of Ukrainian grain. This year, Ukrainians proved that we are stronger than lies, stronger than PSYOP. Stronger than despair, discord, and despondency. By maintaining international support for Ukraine. And multiplying it. By opening new directions, new prospects for Ukraine. Having held 120 meetings at the level of leaders this year alone, which brought us 156 defense support packages alone. Proving once again that Ukrainians are stronger than any intrigues, any attempts to diminish global solidarity, to undermine the coalition of our allies. Instead, it has grown. The coalition of “Patriots”, the air coalition, the tank coalition.

And I would like to thank every country that has joined the coalition to return Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. And I thank all our partners for the fact that this year we already have Patriots, IRIS-T, HIMARS, NASAMS, Hawk, Abrams, Leopards and many more. And our pilots are already mastering F-16 jets, and we will definitely see them in our skies. So that our enemies can certainly see what our real wrath is.

And next year, the enemy will feel the wrath of domestic production. Our weapons, our equipment, artillery, our shells, our drones, our naval “greetings” to the enemy and at least a million Ukrainian FPV drones. All of which we will generously use. On land, in the sky and, of course, at sea. Our Black Sea. And this year, the enemy felt like never before: he has no place there. And our actions in the Black Sea have become a dark chapter in the history of the ruscists’ fleet.

This can be officially “confirmed” by their large landing ships, missile-armed and patrol corvettes on the bottom of the sea. And our Zmiinyi (Snake Island) is now without their snakes and tricolor.

Fellow Ukrainians!

This year, Ukraine has overcome 6,000 air alerts. Almost every night, it woke up to sirens and went down to the shelter to protect its children from enemy missiles and drones. Our air defense forces worked every night and every day, heroically defending the Ukrainian skies. So that we could hear the ‘all clear’ call 6 thousand times. And go up 6 thousand times. Go upstairs. Look up into the sky and prove once again that Ukrainians are stronger than terror.

And no matter how many missiles the enemy fires, no matter how many shellings and attacks – vile, ruthless, massive – the enemy carries out in an attempt to break Ukrainians, intimidate them, knock Ukraine down, drive them underground, we will still rise. Because the one who brings hell to our land will one day see it from his own window.

676 days ago, I addressed you from this office, from my workplace.

Behind me then was a painting – a landscape of the Ukrainian land. Today, behind me are the chevrons of our warriors. And each of them speaks of our land, our sky, all of our Ukraine, our people, what we have accomplished and what we will achieve. They speak of everyone fallen. And everyone who is fighting. And everyone who will live on this land. And will be proud to be Ukrainian. Because the whole world will know: Ukrainians are stronger!

I wish everyone who has already found themselves in our common cause to always have those who will lend a shoulder and will not let you down in life. I wish everyone who is still hesitating to make a bold choice next year – to defend their own country, to work for it, to help it, to find themselves in their own country, because this is the only place on earth where we can all say that we are at home.

And just like last December 31, today we say: “We do not know for certain what the new year will bring us.” But this year we can add: “Whatever it brings, we will be stronger.”

And now I want to say the words that were considered banal before the war, but during the war they are priceless.

I wish you, your families, your loved ones, and all your dear ones warmth and good health.

To those who have a dear heart, may they live long. To those who have lost them, may they remain in your hearts.

To loved ones – time. As much time as possible.

To children – fulfillment of your wishes.

To all people – human happiness.

And to our Ukraine – victory and peace.

Happy New Year, Ukrainians!

Happy New Year, Ukraine!

Glory to Ukraine!

The Ukrainian New Year is not only a time for greetings, but also for action.

Not only for wishes, but also for doing everything possible to make them come true.

We, the Ukrainians, understand better than anybody else that a better future does not come by itself, but only because we defend each of our tomorrows.

Our New Year will be what we make it.

The New Year’s miracle, but also the year-round miracle, is all of you: dedicated, responsible, caring, and effective.

Olena @ZelenskaUA and I wish the people who defend a free and secure future life and vigour, not only for themselves, but for the whole world.

At around 00:00, the “Donbass Palace” (lol) hotel in Donetsk was shelled, resulting in the deaths of Russian “military correspondents”, as reported by the Russian propagandist Sladkov. Judging by the commentary, the losses are quite sensitive – we’re most likely to find out the victims soon.

As of now, 4 people are confirmed dead.

Here’s the full screen grab of Dmitri’s translation:

I don’t trust anything Russian propagandists says, so we’ll have to wait and see what the actual details about who was actually responsible and how many were killed or wounded surrounding this are. Especially as Russia clearly targeted a hotel in Kharkiv yesterday where the foreign news media was staying as they report on the war. And that this Russian targeting – of locations where the foreign news media stays and/or works – is a regular and recurring aspect of Russia’s targeting in their genocidal re-invasion of Ukraine.

Most of all, I want to thank you for supporting this channel and Ukraine in the outgoing 2023 year. In 2023, you helped: to provide a team of volunteer doctors with an ambulance; to help Kherson rescuers with motors for boats when the Kakhovka dam was blown up; to provide various Ukrainian units with dozens of reconnaissance drones; Ukrainian units also were provided with six pickup trucks thanks to your help. And in the new 2024 year, our FPV drones will appear at the front for the first time.

❤️What I want to say is that without your support I would not have even dreamed that I would be able to support Ukrainian defenders as I do now!

🫶Thank you everyone for being with Ukraine in 2023 and see you in the new year!!

On the other hand, a ‘Dancing Bears for the New Year Festival’ sounds kinda fun… [worth clicking for the photos!]

show full post on front page

Centuries ago, people in what is now northeastern Romania donned bear skins and danced to fend off evil spirits. That custom is today known as the Dancing Bears Festival, drawing crowds of tourists every December.

Hundreds of people of all ages, clad in bear costumes, dance every year around Christmas to the deafening beat of drums and roam villages and towns. The highlight of this year’s festival falls on Dec. 30, with bear-clad dancers descending on the town of Comanesti, in eastern Romania, for the finale.

Visitors come from as far as Japan to see the spectacle, featuring lines of people in costumes with gaping bear jaws and claws marching and dancing. Giant red pompom decorations are usually added to the furs. Some of the “bears” jokingly growl or pretend to attack the spectators.

Locals say the custom dates back to the pre-Christianity era when people believed that wild animals staved off misfortune or danger. Dancing “bears” visited people’s homes and knocked on their doors to wish them good luck and a Happy New Year.

“The bear runs through our veins, it is the spirit animal for those in our area,” said Costel Dascalu, who started taking part in the festival when he was 8. At the time, Romania was still under communist rule and the festival was relatively low-key.

“I want to keep the tradition alive,” the 46-year-old added. When the holiday season approaches, he joked, “our breath smells like bears, and we get goose bumps when we hear the sound of drums.”…

lmao it was a rest stop McDonalds. You can easily drop $45 for 3 people there. It's a convenience stop (so you don't have to go out of your way 5 minutes for normal priced food). Remember when “we” announced in unison that paying a few bucks more for our fast-food meals was just fine, as long as the fast-food workers got something closer to a living wage? Well, I guess that statement is no longer operative…

People who eat the most fast food are high income young people which just so happens to be the exact demographic of every Twitter progressive whining about how expensive McDonalds is while ignoring wage hikes in the fast food industry

Hello, I’d like to report a murder.  Where?  In the Washington Post.

What?  Oh, who did it?  It was Alexandra Petri.

Opinion: Nikki Haley explains what other things were about!

Was it good or bad that a mob descended on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, yelling “Hang Mike Pence” and trying to prevent certification of the presidential election?

(laughs) Don’t go easy on me! I think the Capitol is certainly, in the hearts of Americans, a place, and capitalism itself is so important. What do you think?

Do the villains in “Star Wars” seem like they’re based on Nazis?

(laughs) Wow, all right! Coming in with a real challenge! So, obviously, freedom is the most important thing. And we keep coming back to that question of, what can the government tell you to do or not do? I think it comes down to capitalism, of course, is good, and we need to do things to make sure that unaccountable bureaucrats aren’t wielding excess power. And stars are wonderful. But most important of all, what role does government play? Are we compensating the contractors who build our Death Stars?

Can you say something bad about the villains in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” who were clearly Nazis?

Well, I think the villains were basically, you know, any time the free market doesn’t operate to produce maximum freedom.

If we have an election and Donald Trump does not win, does it still count?

Listen, I know about counting! I was an accountant. We need to have capitalism.

Is the climate changing because of human activity?

Freedom is foundational!

Why was the Republican Party founded?

Reasons, of course, and I think government overreach. Also capitalism.

You’re not afraid to say that it was an abolitionist party?

Are you afraid to say that?

What is “The Sound of Music” about?

I think the subject of “The Sound of Music” is basically, well, so many wonderful things — faith, of course, and the free market, and the waving of flags and, of course, capitalism. And certainly that’s the real question, right?

I truly think this Haley debacle is worse than Dukakis riding around in the tank.  Except there were visuals for that one.  All we’ve got here is the little spin-around on stage.

Screen shot of new artwork by NEIVANMADE. The background is black. In the bottom foreground are grey Ukrainian homes and apartment buildings being bombarded by red Russian missiles with the Special Military Operation "Z" symbol on them. Above the missiles, written in red is the word "Ruzzians". Below the buildings being attacked is the statement "Turns Homes Into Graves".

Let’s start with Belgorod, Russia:

What seems to happen is a whole lot of missiles and/or missile parts came down on Belgorod:

It appears that Russian air defense hit whatever was fired at/over Belgorod, but the debris fell on Belgorod.

Russia bombarded Kharkiv again today:

Next year will be a time of global decisions, and Ukraine needs to be able to influence them and achieve its goals – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address

30 December 2023 – 22:39

I wish you good health, dear Ukrainians!

Briefly about this day.

The Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff meeting was special, summing up the year. And it also concerned next year. All that has been done this year, and what needs to be done next year. The Commander-in-Chief, the General Staff reported. Our action plan for 2024 was also presented.

A report by the Defense Intelligence and external intelligence was heard. About what the occupiers are preparing for, and in general, about the situation – about general military-political expectations and possible events in the world.

Despite everything that will happen in other countries, despite any political changes and moods, we need sufficient potential to do our own thing. To achieve our goals. It is clear that next year will be a time of many decisions – global decisions. And Ukraine needs to be able to influence them – to be able to achieve its goals. We will fight for our influence, for justice for Ukraine, and I am grateful to all the leaders who help, who have been with us since February 24th and will be with us in 2024.

Today, the entire day has been dedicated to reports on the relief operations in the aftermath of Russian strikes. In total, more than 120 of our cities and villages were affected by yesterday’s Russian attack. A total of 39 fatalities. My condolences go out to everyone who has lost loved ones. It is crucial to provide all necessary assistance to those affected –whose homes and apartments have been damaged by terrorists. It is important to address it both at the government and local levels. Ukrainian rescuers, doctors, police officers, all employees of municipal enterprises involved – I thank you for helping people, working around the clock to save as many lives as possible!

Currently, a rescue operation is underway again in Kharkiv – 17 people have been injured in another strike. And for every such strike in Kharkiv, in our Kherson region, in the cities and villages of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia region… For all strikes in Odesa, Sumy region, Kyiv, and all our other cities and regions. For every “Shahed” drone, for every Russian missile, there will be a fair responsibility of the terrorist state. Both political and very practical.

We are preparing to produce more weapons next year. We already have a clear schedule for our international work in January. We are working with our partners on solutions needed by every Ukrainian soldier, our entire nation, our state. And these decisions will be strong.

My special gratitude goes to all our partners for the new operational work to strengthen our air defense system. It is not only us who work 24/7 in the free world – and it is important. It is crucial for the resistance against terror not to cease even for a day. So that Russia cannot win anything in this war. And it will be so.

I thank all our soldiers! I thank everyone who works for our state and people!

Glory to Ukraine!

This Ukrainian M2 Bradley destroys Russian manpower almost point blank near.

There are also several Russian vehicles (looks like BMPs) getting the same love by the 25mm Bushmaster cannon. They are getting beaten up pretty bad, while Russians try to hide behind them but to no avail. They are all just cannon fodder. And food they became, first for the Bradley and later for the wildlife.

Welcome to Belgorod!

You wanted this war, get it! All of Russia must burn!

This will not happen, the Russians have erased the Ukrainian cities and the quiet peaceful country

Whatever has happened in Belgorod, I’m finding the footage sickening and difficult to watch.

However, coming to my mind is the Kyiv TV tower attack on 1 March 2022. Mutilated bodies of innocent bypassers, scorched by powerful explosions. Since then, we’ve seen thousands and thousands of similar acts of violence perpetrated by Putin’s forces.

He ordered his henchmen to use a derogatory term against a country of 40 million people, calling it the “SMO zone”.

As if there’s a door that you can open from the safe Russian side, and behind it you will find war and devastation. Terrible things can only happen in the “SMO zone”, says Putin to Russians, but you are safe.

But this should not be the case. Anyone supporting the war on the other side should know they bear responsibility and this responsibility might hit them at any moment.

For two years, they’ve been too secure. Too secure compared to what they did, do, and will be doing in Ukraine.

https://twitter.com/Tendar/status/1741171620528394741

Responsibility for what happened today in Belgorod lies squarely on Putin and his supporters. And I’m not necessarily referring to the fact that Russian S-300 in their own typical way of being Made-in-Russia garbage hit their own people. It goes far beyond than that.

This entire war was doomed to come back to Russia. It was Moscow where this war has been conceived and here we have the results. From a 3-day “special operation” to a full scale war where hundreds of thousands Russians already perished. Now when Russians completely lost control of things, it was only a matter of time that it will hit them.

Russian calls for “vengeance” are as dumb as they are redundant. They don’t need excuses to murder, they already murder as they please. They can only convince the last uncertain one in the West that peace can only be established by completely annihilating the Russian army in Ukraine and the surrounding border area. Hitting Kharkiv right now is as self-defeating as it can be. It won’t shatter Ukrainian resolve, in the contrary. The Ukrainian nation has never been so unified and determined. They will do whatever is necessary for their freedom and independence.

You Just Never Know – One Person Making a Difference

Mousebumples just sent me an article that surprised me.  These days even with a good article, I read a bit, think this is really good!, leave the article open in a tab so I can come back to it, and figure I will read it later when I have more time.

Not this time.

His Shock Win Flipped a Pennsylvania County. Now He Vows to Raise Hell over Its Lethal Jail.  (Bolts)

It’s a David and Goliath story, and David won the race.  But an unlikely David, at that!  At least to look at him.  In other ways, he’s David through and through.  And he’ll be inaugurated on Jan 2.  Justin Douglas, a pastor and an activist, had never thought about running.  He had almost no money, and a simple message.  He pounded it home, and won.

He’s instantly recognizable as almost anything but a successful politician: he’s got gauge earrings, 42 tattoos, and dresses in jeans, band tees, and Nike sneakers.

By any standard measure, his campaign seemed doomed from the start: He had no paid staff or office. His team of volunteers, a few friends of his with zero combined campaign experience, met in the corner of a Starbucks in Hershey. He ran without institutional backing or money; while his opponents combined to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, Douglas reports spending only about $12,000.

Prisoners are dying in the county prison, at an alarming rate. The prison holds about 1,000 people at a time, and most of the people there have not been convicted – either they can’t make bail or they have violated probation or parole.  120 days is the average stay. And some of them end up with a de facto death sentence without even being convicted of anything.

In addition, local journalists have found that the county has often misreported its jail deaths—in some cases, covering up its own responsibility.

In one such instance, Dauphin County reported the death of Herbert Tilghman as a “medical event,” which, PennLive found, obscured the fact that prison staff failed to take Tilghman’s stomach pains seriously, providing minimal treatment and even accusing him of faking illness shortly before he died.

In a separate case, the county initially said Ishmail Thompson died in a “medical episode,” failing to note that officers had placed Thompson in a restraint chair, and a hood over his head, then pepper-sprayed him soon before he fell unconscious and, ultimately, comatose.

A bit of the backstory.

There are many paths to elected office, Justin Douglas quips, “but fired pastor is not one.”

A year ago, he says, he could not have named the three men who serve on the county commission of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, his home since 2015. This powerful body, with control of a $222 million budget and a county government workforce of 1,700, meets Wednesdays in downtown Harrisburg, in a building that Douglas had never entered.

Still, he got a call in February from Run for Something, an organization that recruits progressive candidates for local elections, to see if he’d be interested in running for a seat on the county commission. The last time the office was on the ballot, in 2019, Douglas did not vote. He’d just been fired from his job as pastor at a local church for appearing in a promotional video welcoming LGBTQ+ people to join the congregation. He, his wife, and their three kids were forced out of the home, which was owned by the church. All this time later, Douglas, 39, is still working three jobs to make up for what happened: he’s a pastor at a new church and a fitness instructor, and last year he drove more than 2,000 miles for Uber.

His stand at the church fit with what he describes as his longtime activist streak. A mainstay in various corners of Dauphin County where matters of social equity and justice are concerned, Douglas grew active in recent years in protest of conditions in the local jail, an aging and oppressive facility where people die at an alarming rate. The county commission has vast power over that jail, a significant factor, Douglas says, in his decision to take Run for Something up on its proposal. He still felt like an imposter when he decided in March to enter the race.
