Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Bark louder, little dog.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

When I was faster i was always behind.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

How stupid are these people?

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

In after Baud. Damn.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

… Nearly three decades into his career with the US Border Patrol, Gregory Bovino has become the on-the-ground face of Trump’s effort to surge federal law enforcement into blue states and cities regardless of whether local officials want them there — first in Los Angeles, now in Chicago, with other possible cities on deck.

But if he and his officers are an unwelcome presence or face interference from protesters, Bovino said he is not dissuaded.

“We’re going to carry out that mission,” Bovino said in an interview with CNN in Chicago on Tuesday. “And that’s paramount, or else we shouldn’t be here. We’re going to carry that mission out.”

He added that if “someone steps in the way, then … that may not work out well for them, and if we need to effect an arrest of a US citizen or anyone else, then we’ll do that.”

Local officials have described Bovino as leading a branch of law enforcement which deploys tactics that are frighteningly authoritarian and which has been styled into Trump’s own personal police force, used by the president as a cudgel against Democrat-led localities and the people — citizens and noncitizens alike — who live in them…

Bovino, 55, holds the title of chief patrol agent of the El Centro sector and has been the lead on the administration’s crackdown in cities — now, 2,000 miles away from the California sector he helms. His newfound resurgence in the agency under Trump finds him in a position of power unique among his peers in Border Patrol.

His heavy-handed tactics, including immigration sweeps in parking lots and smashing car windows, have fueled consternation among some in the Trump administration while also garnering praise from senior Homeland Security officials…

Greetings from the Dirksen federal courthouse, where Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino is set to appear before U.S. District Court Judge Sara Ellis.
What you need to know, for @wttw.bsky.social:

— Heather Cherone (@heathercherone.bsky.social) October 28, 2025 at 9:48 AM

From Ms. Cherone’s (long, worth reading!) thread:

… We are underway.
Ellis calls Bovino to the stand. He is wearing his uniform.
He is sworn in.
He has no visible head injury, even though federal officials said he was struck Friday in the head by protestors before he deployed tear gas in Little Village.

Ellis is reminding Bovino of the oath he took when he became a Border Patrol officer — the same oath she took when she became a federal judge.

“We both agreed to support and defend the Constitution,” Ellis said.
Bovino is listening impassively.

Ellis says her job is to ensure that Bovino and the federal agents under his command are acting in accordance with the law and court orders.

Ellis “It may be that what I am seeing is the result if one of three things:”
1. Perhaps the order is unclear
2. No one read the order
3. “Folks actively chose to ignore it”

Ellis said it could not be No. 3, because that would violate Bovino’s oath…

show full post on front page

Ellis says she acknowledges that things can change quickly and be “dynamic” and that she is not present

“But I am getting videos … it is difficult for me to see that the force being used is necessary.”…
@wttw.bsky.social…

Ellis is now questioning Bovino about what the plaintiffs have called “flagrant” and “repeated” violations of her order.

“A warning has to be ‘I am going to deploy tear gas if you do not do whatever it is … get off my car .. and allow people time to comply.”…

Ellis tells Bovino the people of Chicago have a right to tell him and his agents that they don’t like what they are doing and want them to leave.

“They can’t get tear gassed” for doing that.

Bovino: “I understand what you are saying, your honor. We will abide by the temporary restraining order.”…

After an hour and 15 minutes on the stand, Ellis dismisses Bovino.
“I’ll let you get back to work.”

Bovino immediately leaves the courtroom, accompanied by a large security detail…

saw a lot of people complaining that the judge wasn’t being harsh enough on bovino but this, coupled with ordering him to start wearing a body cam by friday, sets up a pretty fucking strict compliance structure

During World War I this was called shell shock. Now we call it post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or post-traumatic stress (PTS). This is a toddler with shell shock from drone, bomb, and missile attacks.

This is still the best description of how we got from shell shock to PTS:

Right now, at 3:15 AM local time in Ukraine/9:15 PM EDT, almost all of northeastern, eastern, and southern Ukraine – Chernihiv Oblast around to Odesa Oblast – is under air raid alert. The alert maps aren’t showing anything specific, so the Ukrainians will have another long sleepless late night/early morning.

Also, lots of facilities appear to be on fire in Russia.

Monitoring channels report that Ukrainian drones, including jet-powered ones, are currently flying to attack Russia.

The President and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands Discussed Energy Support for Ukraine to Get Through the Winter

28 October 2025 – 19:11

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, David van Weel.

One of the key topics was Ukraine’s energy situation. The Head of State briefed the Minister on Russia’s daily strikes against Ukraine’s energy and gas infrastructure, as well as the water supply system. David van Weel announced that the Netherlands will provide an additional EUR 25 million to support Ukraine’s energy sector.

“We are very grateful for this. Today, this is probably one of our top priorities – a strong army, strong air defense, and the ability to strengthen our energy sector. Recently, a decision was made to establish a coalition to support Ukraine’s energy sector and energy security. And I am very thankful that in this team we immediately felt the support of Norway, the Netherlands, and personally, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The meeting also addressed the possibility of using frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s benefit. The Netherlands supports this decision, as well as the need to increase pressure on Russia. Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the Netherlands for its role in adopting the 19th EU sanctions package and discussed preparations for the next one with David van Weel.

Additionally, they discussed the prospect of holding Russia accountable for its war crimes. Ukraine expressed gratitude to the Netherlands for its role in establishing the Special Tribunal on Russian Aggression against Ukraine and for the decision to host the tribunal in The Hague.

David van Weel assured that Ukraine can continue to rely on the Netherlands’ support.

“The Netherlands will stand with Ukraine for as long as needed, whether in military support, where we were among the leaders in assisting your country, or in financial support, where we are now strongly backing efforts to use frozen Russian assets to provide greater financial aid and stability, or in the sphere of justice,” he said.

A few weeks ago, regime police vans began hurrying us to march faster moments after as I decided to go home via metro. But before I went into metro, I heard the police demands and saw Lizi demonstratively and deliberately slowing herself in order to disobey the unlawful demands.

I couldn’t leave her alone like that and felt the sudden urge to join her, although I really didn’t want to be fined or jailed because I always have some foreign policy stuff to do.

More joined in and then the entire march stopped and refused to move if the vans kept pressing us to go faster.

To me, this is a great demonstration of the importance of one person to act first, & the snowball effect it creates.

I asked Lizi her name and remarked: “Oh, youuu are the ‘radical’ targeted by the propaganda.” She was completely unbothered by the attack & even found it amusing. He high-fived.

From EuroMaidan Press:

The Czech Republic has delivered hundreds of cogeneration units to Ukraine that can power hospitals or entire districts, Ukrinform reports. These high-efficiency systems are already being installed in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, and other areas to support critical infrastructure amid ongoing Russian attacks on the Ukrainian power grid.

This comes amid the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, as Russia continues its daily terror air attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in an effort to trigger blackouts and deprive civilians of heating during the approaching winter.

Czech Government Envoy for Ukraine’s Reconstruction Tomáš Kopečný told Ukrinform that the Czech Republic is supplying Ukraine with cogeneration units that serve as alternative energy sources. He emphasized that these are not backup generators but compact, efficient systems capable of generating both heat and electricity. Each unit produces between 500 kW and 4–5 MW of power.

Kopečný said that one unit can supply energy to an entire hospital or a city district. The systems can be connected directly to the grid, and if more capacity is needed, several units can be combined. The devices operate on gas or biomass and are already being deployed across Ukraine.

“Since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, when we actually began this work, hundreds of such units have already been delivered,” Kopečný said. He added that the strongest players in the cogeneration sector are the Czech Republic, Austria, and Germany.

According to him, Czech suppliers are not only shipping the units but also establishing branches in Ukraine, training local partners, and contributing to the development of domestic manufacturing.

Alongside cogeneration units, Czechia supplies hundreds — possibly thousands — of 3D printers for use in medicine, industry, and the military.

Czech suppliers are opening branches in Ukraine, training local partners, and helping develop local production. The Czech National Development Bank now implements major Ukraine projects and has received €200 million from the European Commission to support them.

“Public fundraising remains active. Campaigns like “Gift for Putin” have funded a tank, helicopter, howitzers, and long-range missiles — often within days.

It bears repeating: USDA has a $5 billion contingency reserve that it refuses to utilize to continue SNAP benefits. This was the USDA's *own plan* at the start of the shutdown—now quietly deleted from its website.
This is as blatant an example of "hunger is a policy choice" as you will ever see.

This sort of rhetoric about people not getting government benefits from the anti-government party is notable.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) October 28, 2025 at 10:33 AM

The reason why the GOP even in the immediate post Tea Party period wouldn't let this happen is because they understand that both groups of benefits are more used by their own voters than democrats.
The current crop has internalized their own propaganda.

This is why I think, for instance, that Emmer getting up and acknowledging that people are going to be hurt is an important first step that demonstrates internal resistance is getting more desperate.

As the government shutdown drags on, Democrats push to renew Obamacare subsidies while Republicans debate changes to the law.

— The Associated Press (@apnews.com) October 28, 2025 at 12:30 AM

… Fifteen years after the Affordable Care Act was enacted, the party remains united in criticizing the law but divided on how to move forward. That tension has come into sharp focus during the government shutdown as Democrats seize on rising premiums to pressure Republicans into extending expiring subsidies for the law, often referred to as Obamacare.

President Donald Trump and GOP leaders say they’ll consider extending the enhanced tax credits that otherwise expire at year’s end — but only after Democrats vote to reopen the government. In the meantime, people enrolled in the plans are already being notified of hefty premium increases for 2026.

As town halls fill with frustrated voters and no clear Republican plan emerges, the issue appears to be gaining political strength heading into next year’s midterm elections…

‘Concepts of a plan’

… Republicans say they want a broader overhaul of the health care system, though such a plan would be difficult to advance before next year. Party leaders have not outlined how they’ll handle the expiring tax credits, insisting they won’t negotiate on the issue until Democrats agree to end the shutdown.

House Speaker Mike Johnson told a press conference Monday that the tax credits are “subsidizing bad policy.” Republicans “have a long list of ideas” to address health care costs, he said, and are “grabbing the best ideas that we’ve had for years to put it on paper and make it work.”…

A looming internal GOP fight
Even as GOP leaders pledge to discuss ending the subsidies when the government opens, it’s clear that many Republican lawmakers are adamantly opposed to an extension.

“At least among Republicans, there’s a growing sense that just maintaining the status quo is very destructive,” said Brian Blase, the president of Paragon Health Institute and a former health policy adviser to Trump during his first term…

Also pathetic, and fallacious:

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday that he's not "100% sure" if active duty service members will be paid at the end of the week, as the government shutdown continues.

All Deep-Strike Goals Must Be Fully Locked In by Year’s End, including Expansion of Our Long-Range Footprint – Address by the President

27 October 2025 – 19:47

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

I held a Staff meeting today – much of the discussion focused on our long-range sanctions against Russia and the results of our responses to Russian attacks. In particular, we spoke with manufacturers of weapons – weapons for deep strikes. This is the right format for a Staff meeting – bringing together manufacturers, those responsible for the effective employment of our drones and missiles, those in charge of funding, as well as diplomats. We are providing three-year contracts for the most effective manufacturers. We are expanding this long-contract approach so that both manufacturers and our army have greater certainty. At every Staff meeting, I will check the pace of contracting: this must be implemented. Under any scenario, Ukraine must always – and will always – have sufficient long-range capabilities. Both now, in wartime, and no less afterward – as part of the security guarantees for our future, for our children. Long-range capability is a component of independence and will be the greatest component for ensuring peace. Global sanctions and our pinpoint precision are practically syncing up to end this war on terms fair for Ukraine. All deep-strike goals must be fully locked in by year’s end, including expansion of our long-range footprint. I thank every unit and every element of Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces for their accuracy. I thank our manufacturers – those who are fully delivering on the tasks set. The funding is secured.

We are working practically on a daily basis on air defense as well, engaging with every partner that can help with air defense systems and also with missiles.

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine delivered a report. It is defense cooperation with partners that is the top priority of our foreign policy. And it is important that every week bring results. Last week was exactly that – significant. This week should also be a positive one for our defense.

I have already spoken today with the representative of Croatia – the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense – about the next defense package and European programs supporting defense production. I also spoke today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia – the Baltic states will continue to be among the most active in support.

Today, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine delivered a report. I want to thank all our people working on recovery across the regions. There are many difficult situations, particularly in the Chernihiv region, in border areas of other regions, and near the frontline. But it is important that recovery continues everywhere, and our people – repair crews, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and energy companies – are working heroically. I thank all of you for this.

I spoke with our military – special attention is focused on Pokrovsk and the neighboring areas. That is where the occupier has concentrated its largest assault forces and where there is significant assault activity. Battles continue in the city as well: it is Pokrovsk that is their main objective. And every result achieved by our forces in this sector is a result for all of Ukraine, for the entire defense of our state. I thank everyone who understands this. I thank everyone who is fighting for Ukraine!

Glory to Ukraine!
