Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Come on, man.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

This fight is for everything.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

We still have time to mess this up!

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Jesus Wept…While The GOP Laughed

This post is in: Fuck The Poor, Immigration, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome, Bitter Despair is the New Black, Fucked-up-edness, Sociopaths, The Republican Crime Syndicate

I hope I never have enough snark in me to snark at this:

A 7-year-old girl from Guatemala died of dehydration and shock after she was taken into Border Patrol custody last week for crossing from Mexico into the United States illegally with her father and a large group of migrants along a remote span of New Mexico desert, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday.

This child was in CBP custody for more than eight hours before she started seizing.  When someone finally checked her out, they found that

she “reportedly had not eaten or consumed water for several days.”…

…An initial diagnosis by physicians at El Paso’s Providence Hospital listed the cause of death as septic shock, fever and dehydration, CBP said.

The quoted official response centers on a lie:

“Border Patrol agents took every possible step to save the child’s life under the most trying of circumstances…”

If they had done so, of course, she and all the refugees in her group would have received water in less than one third of a day.

The warehousing and brutalization of refugees is being done in our name, by people and an infrastructure at the border that is at best ill-equipped and insufficient for the task, and at worse, deliberately engaged in a campaign of exemplary mistreatment designed to décourager les autres.

So children die. In the care and under the “protection” of the US government; our government.  As a result of a policy that uses neglect as a tool of border enforcement.

This policy, this explicit choice is Donald Trump’s. But it is far from his alone. The GOP controls Congress. It could have chosen not to be party to the misery and sorrows unto death.  It did not.

Every Republican in national office is complicit.  All of them share in this tragedy, and the others we’ve heard about and the (likely) many more we haven’t.  The moral stain on America as a whole ain’t fading anytime soon, and the reckoning won’t even be able to begin until the GOP as it is now constituted goes the way of the Confederate States of America.

Last thought: I note we are in the midst of the holiday season, the culmination of which, as conservatives hasten to remind us, is the day on which Christians remember the birth of the Prince of Peace. What Babies Would Jesus Starve?

Our New Surreality

by John Cole|  December 9, 201812:31 pm| 148 Comments

This post is in: Because of wow., Fucked-up-edness, The Republican Crime Syndicate

It’s kind of weird where we are right now. Pretty much everyone now knows and has internalized that our President and many of those who surround him, including Pence, have either committed multiple felonies or were a party to them. And that’s just the stuff we know about right now. Who knows what else Jared and Trump’s spawn have done that haven’t even been released yet. And we have barely scratched the surface of his rogues gallery of cabinet appointments.

But even knowing that, our nation’s elites are still tip-toeing around the basic fact that our President is a criminal who broke who knows how many laws. Instead of a national conversation about how we are going to prosecute him, it’s more horse-race nonsense- “Will it hurt Democrats to bring impeachment charges? Can a Trump win in 2020 and outlast the statutes of limitations?”

It’s kind of insane. It’s sort of analogous to when we knew all the Catholic priests were molesting those kids, but people were more afraid of uprooting the church than dealing with the monsters. So people talked in veiled terms and looked the other way, and never dealt with the problem or really held anyone accountable.

The Republicans are so corrupt that even with everything we already know, they will not convict in the Senate. We’re basically just going to have to live with a criminal President until the economy craters and the money guys decide to cut their losses. It’s nuts.

Trump Continues to Say the Quiet Parts Out Loud

by John Cole|  December 5, 20185:00 pm| 33 Comments

This post is in: The Republican Crime Syndicate

We’ll just file this under fiscal conservatism:

Since the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump’s aides and advisers have tried to convince him of the importance of tackling the national debt.

Sources close to the president say he has repeatedly shrugged it off, implying that he doesn’t have to worry about the money owed to America’s creditors—currently about $21 trillion—because he won’t be around to shoulder the blame when it becomes even more untenable.

The friction came to a head in early 2017 when senior officials offered Trump charts and graphics laying out the numbers and showing a “hockey stick” spike in the national debt in the not-too-distant future. In response, Trump noted that the data suggested the debt would reach a critical mass only after his possible second term in office.

“Yeah, but I won’t be here,” the president bluntly said, according to a source who was in the room when Trump made this comment during discussions on the debt.

This is actually the honest position of most Republicans. They’ll pretend they care about the budget, but that’s just so they can rob the poors to give more tax cuts to their buddies. At least Trump is being honest about the smash and grab.

Brian Kemp thinks Georgians are stupid

by Betty Cracker|  November 4, 201810:50 am| 211 Comments

This post is in: Election 2018, Goddamned Traitors, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity, Assholes, The Republican Crime Syndicate

There can be no other explanation for this Banana Republican stunt:

NEW: With 2 days until Election Day, Republican Sec. of State Brian Kemp, who is overseeing Georgia's elections as he runs for governor, announces that his office is investigating state’s Democratic Party while offering no evidence to back up allegation. https://t.co/exNS7PmxSh

— NBC News (@NBCNews) November 4, 2018

It was already outrageous that Kemp refused to leave his Secretary of State post and is thus administering an election in which he is also running — an election for which Kemp’s office eagerly attempted to disqualify tens of thousands of mostly minority voters. Now this.

Maybe his internal polling looks bad, and this is a desperation move. In any event, it’s a goddamned disgrace.

Kemp’s contempt for democracy and Georgians couldn’t be clearer. This Saltine-American hopes Stacey Abrams curb-stomps his cracker ass.

??? The fate of Kavanaugh may well be decided in the next 48-72 hrs. As of now multiple GOP senators are undecided but they’re getting A LOT of pressure from the WH and leadership to fall in line. Your pressure can make the difference. Pls call your senators 202-224-3121
We should all be doing this of course, and those of the jackals who suffer with Republican “representation” are the tip of the spear on this particular campaign.  It just takes two GOP senators to discover a residual memory that women are in fact people, and this nomination goes the way of the Titanic.

We’ve talked about the term before, but if you need proof that the GOP has shredded the country’s institutions and the people’s trust in government, look no farther than the Rosenstein debacle today.

Because we knew this was inevitable. Again, I spent the day offline and once  I popped back up, twitter was all atwitter about this:

Ok, I speed-read this and my instant takeaways:

1) Meticulously researched and sourced by Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer – as always

2) The new accusation of Kavanaugh exposing himself to a classmate is damaging but only so much
