I Have Not Been Ignoring You

by John Cole|  June 10, 202411:38 am| 134 Comments

This post is in: John Cole Presents "This Fucking Old House"

Hello all- just thought I would pop in and say howdy and that I am not ignoring you. Had a whopper of a sinus issues for a while, and then this was my view for the last two days:

I Have Not Been Ignoring You

I had several unrelated thoughts, one of which is we have not had a random Artists in Our Midst post in a long while. I think I might do one in a day or two- nothing official or planned, just a thread. The reason I thought about this was because I got a package from commenter Satby, whose soap and lotion I use almost exclusively, and this time she shipped some bulbs that she had dug up and while we were talking about my order, asked if I wanted some. Of course I said yes, so I am going to be planting those some time today.

That got me to thinking- how cool would it be if I had a whole section of my yard just dedicated to bulbs and the like from readers? At any rate, if you are digging up some bulbs and don’t want them, reach out to me and I will paypal you to ship them, and then maybe next year we could have a nice little flower display of everyone’s contribution. Or not.

I have to get back to work but I will shout at y’all tonight. There’s a lot going on.

I Like the Policy but not the Framing (What Else Is New?)

This post is in: Biden Administration in Action, Immigration, Open Threads, Politics

I haven’t seen the clip of where Biden talked about this publicly, so I can’t quite tell whether it’s the campaign that is framing this as a move to win over Latinos in key states, or whether it’s the media that’s framing it that way.  Seems crazy for Biden to present it this way, unless the horserace narrative is the only way to get the media to cover something?

It’s like when campaigns say “Person X is doing this thing (Y) in order to look strong.” WTF?  You don’t look strong by saying that out loud – the point is to let the audience conclude that you look strong when you do that thing.

In any case, I think this will be a great move.  It adds stability for over 750,000 families, and I’m sure it will be good for the economy.

Biden nears huge next move on immigration as he tries to win over Latinos in key states (CNN)

Looking to shore up Latino votes in Nevada and Arizona for his reelection campaign, President Joe Biden is on the verge of soon following up last week’s executive action aimed at curbing border crossings with another move focused on providing legal status for long-term undocumented immigrants who are married to American citizens.

Though final details have not been decided, officials are reviewing an existing legal authority known as “parole in place” that would shield select undocumented immigrants from deportation and allow them to work legally in the country as they seek citizenship. The orders have not yet been presented to Biden himself for review.

Polling reviewed by top aides in the White House and the president’s reelection headquarters are helping seal the deal.

For Biden in Arizona, “Everything is on the margins, right?” said Democratic Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. “My sense is it should help.”

Estimates put the number of people who could be directly affected at 750,000 to 800,000, with a reverberating effect among spouses, children, extended family and friends — and predominantly Latinos. That’s millions of potential votes in just Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia. Those are all battleground states, all home to many Latinos and all looking likely to be decided in November by slivers of the electorate.

“We have lost the narrative on the border, and so we need to start winning it back,” said one person involved in the discussions of why Biden started with the executive action tightening asylum rules last week.

But “Latino voters in particular are extremely enthusiastic about seeing something done to help people they know. It is either a direct relative or friend, someone they work with,” that person argued. “It is such a powerful signal to these communities that you care about them, and you understand what’s happening there.”

This could amount to the federal government’s biggest relief program since the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. That program, which allowed undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children to live and work in the country, was announced mid-June of Obama’s own reelection year in 2012.

Several veterans of Obama’s reelection point to that moment as a key turning point for his bid for a second term. Biden, then the vice president, was engaged in many of those discussions.

Open thread.

On The Road – Albatrossity – Costa Rica, week 2 — Flycatchers!

Costa Rica, New York City, Quebec.  Looks to be a great week!

Albatrossity

Lots of people know that Costa Rica hosts a lot of species of hummingbirds. But that is not the only species-rich family of birds there. Flycatcher species generally outnumber the hummingbird species in the Neotropics, and that is the case in Costa Rica for sure. As photographic subjects, the flycatchers have a lot to recommend them. They are active, vocal, often perch in the open, and tend to return to the same perch after sallying out to catch an insect that made the mistake of venturing into their territory. So here are ten flycatcher species that I encountered during my time in Costa Rica; as before, species which I had not seen previously are tagged with an asterisk.

Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) is a bird that you can see in the United States; there are breeding populations in Arizona and Texas, and vagrants have been reported in more northerly states (although not Kansas, alas). But it is very common in much of Central and South America, extending south to Uruguay and Argentina. Those far southern birds migrate north to the Amazon for the austral winter, as one would expect. A quick round-up of recent stories. From what I’m seeing, any hardcore Trumpist who’s afraid the God-Emperor might actually decompensate past the point of electability before November should be glad to vote RFK Jr instead:

Remember Trump’s Central Park Five ad?

In 2016, RFK Jr. wrongfully accused two innocent men of color of a crime they didn’t commit.

RFK Jr. and Donald Trump will always put themselves first, even at the expense of innocent people.

Every single time.https://t.co/ih9MwT7fzE

Very fine people!

@RobertKennedyJr
Oh yeah. In fact how about we erect statues to Lee Harvey Oswald, James Earl Ray and Sirhan Sirhan.
History is history.
You have lost ur mind.

RFK Jr. had a ‘visceral’ reaction to tear-downs of Confederate statues https://t.co/V2EmYWDsM3

— Pam Taylor (@Tnboro19) May 28, 2024

Chatting with Tim Pool is a red flag in any case, but:

… Speaking to podcast host Tim Pool in a “Timcast IRL” episode Friday, Kennedy — who is mounting a long-shot bid for the White House — said he doesn’t think “it’s a good, healthy thing for any culture to erase history,” when asked for his thoughts on the removal of Confederate monuments around the country.

“I have a visceral reaction against, against the attacks on those statues,” he said. “There were heroes in the Confederacy who didn’t have slaves and, you know, I just, I just have a visceral reaction against destroying history. I don’t like it. I think we should celebrate who we are.”

He added: “We should celebrate the good qualities of everybody. … If we want to find people who were completely virtuous on every issue throughout history, we would erase all of history.”…

“Values change throughout history, and we need to be able to be sophisticated enough to live with, you know, our ancestors who didn’t agree with us on everything and who did things that are now regarded as immoral or wrong,” he said. “Maybe they had other qualities that we wanted to celebrate, and clearly Robert E. Lee had extraordinary qualities of leadership.”…

Take it from someone who knows the breed: Mike Barnicle is an old-fashioned Irish mucker, a guy whose greatest joy lies in F*cking Around even with full awareness that he will Find Out. If Barnicle thinks RFK Jr is too damaged, well… Can’t say we didn’t warn ya!

— Jack E. Smith ⚖️ (@7Veritas4) June 9, 2024

…I say what would happen if the boat sank from its weight and you’re in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery and the battery is now underwater and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there. By the way, a lot of shark attacks lately. You notice that? A lot of shark. I watched some guys justifying it today. Well, they weren’t really that angry. They bit off the young ladies leg because of the fact that they were, they were not hungry, but they misunderstood what, who she was. These people are cray. He said there’s no problem with sharks they just didn’t really understand a young woman swimming. Now really got decimated and other people too. A lot of shark attacks. So I said, so there’s a shark 10 yards away from the boat. 10 yards over here. Do I get electrocuted if the boat is sinking, water goes over the battery, the boat is sinking. Do I stay on top of the boat and get electrocuted or do I jump over by the shark and not get electrocuted because, I will tell you, he didnt know the answer. He said, you know, nobody’s ever asked that question. I said, I think it’s a good question. I think there’s a lot of electric current coming through that water, but you know what I’d do if there was a shark or you get electrocuted? I’ll take electrocution every single time. I’m not getting near the shark.

Oh my gosh, that is even worse than Herschel Walker when he was running against Raphael Warnock for Senate in 2022.  Walker wanted to be a werewolf not a vampire.  trump would rather be electrocuted than eaten by a shark.  This is their best!

Painting by NEIVANMADE. It has a white background an in the center are Soldiers in green doing air defense by firing at incoming Russian missiles in the upper right. The missiles are red and yellow. In the upper left, written in green, is the text: "SAVE THE BRAVEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!" Below the Soldiers, also written in green, is "SUPPORT FOR KHARKIV"

Quick housekeeping note: Rosie is still doing very well. She has her next chemo treatment tomorrow, which will be treatment two of round 2. Than you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Russia started the glide bombing of Kharkiv back up this morning.

And right now, 7:55 PM EDT, Kharkiv is the only non-occupied part of Ukraine that has an air raid alert up. The ones for Russian occupied Luhansk and Crimea are always up and will only come down once they are liberated.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.
