Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Dead at 76:

OJ Simpson, an NFL star turned suspected murderer, has died, according to a statement by his family. He was 76.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Simpson’s account carried a simple message from his family.

“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace,” the statement said.

I’ve guess this merits a post, so have at it in the comments if you have anything to say.  Personally, I was done with this whole topic in the mid-90s.

Thursday Morning Open Thread: The GOP Has No Idea What They’re Doing (But We Democrats DO!)

I ran the whip operations for Majority Whip Jim Clyburn… you whip rule votes if you think you could possibly lose rule votes… Bottomline YOU DO NOT LOSE rule votes!

Actually my job is to build the party infrastructure to turnout the vote … that’s what we have been doing over the past few years. The campaign oversees media and the message… we focus on ground game and turnout.

If we can’t force the Repubs to do the right thing, we can at least make sure the voting public knows who to blame:

Chill Grey Dawn Open Thread: The Mother’s Milk of Politics

by Anne Laurie|  April 11, 20246:06 am| 241 Comments

This post is in: C.R.E.A.M., Elections 2024, Proud to Be A Democrat

A LOT of new reporting here about the dire straits the Trump campaign is in.

-Less than FIVE staffers in each battleground state
-They can't afford to hire staff until the SUMMER
-GOP staffers TRASHING the 2024 campaignhttps://t.co/qTtXn2FomA

— Ammar Moussa (@ammarmufasa) April 9, 2024

We political junkies all know how important the money is, and it’s very much to our advantage if we can keep reminding people that the Biden campaign has got it (and that whatever the GOP collects will be piddled away by TFG). Five reporters on this NBS piece — “Biden is building a behemoth of a campaign. Trump at this point seems to be playing catch-up.”:

President Joe Biden has been scooping up record-making donations and plowing the money into an expanding campaign operation in battleground states that appears to surpass what Donald Trump has built thus far.

Flush with $71 million cash at the end of February — more than twice that of Trump’s campaign — Biden parlayed his fundraising advantage into a hiring spree that now boasts 300 paid staffers across nine states and 100 offices in parts of the country that will decide the 2024 election, according to details provided by the campaign.

Trump’s advisers would not disclose staffing levels, but his ground game still seems to be at a nascent stage. His campaign hired state directors in Pennsylvania and Michigan last week, people familiar with the recruitment process said.

Combined, the Trump campaign and Republican National Committee have fewer than five staff members in each of the battleground states, said two Republicans familiar with the committee and the Trump campaign’s organizational structures in 2020 and 2024.

At this point in 2020 — when Trump was running as the incumbent — the Trump Victory organization already had state directors, regional directors and field organizers on the ground in battleground states, testing field operations and activating volunteers, the two people said…

State campaign offices serve myriad purposes. They can be a place people go to pick up yard signs, make calls to unregistered voters, or get the training needed to become effective evangelists when they go door-to-door.

But state teams also serve a more utilitarian function: making sure that people have a ride to the polls or drop their absentee ballots in the mail. That can be grinding work, but operatives say it can be decisive in a tight election.

“I’ve made to everyone who will listen [the point] that our challenge is changing the mindset of Republicans to get them to request [mail-in ballots] in the first place,” said DeMarco, the GOP chair in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County. “That’s where not having boots on the ground early, and being able to set up one of these programs, puts us at a disadvantage.”

90 million. Damn. Long ways from trying to scrounge up money in the winter of 20 for TV in Nevada and SC ?? https://t.co/cqfRZmVbuY

This post is in: How about that weather?, Open Threads, Republican Stupidity

A few things: First, huge thanks to whoever recommended “Somebody Feed Phil.” Phil probably has the best job in the world, and he knows everybody. On an episode I recently watched, he had lunch in DC with Pete Buttigieg. Another episode from a few years back featured a Zoom call with Norman Lear, then 100 years old, who told the following joke (paraphrasing):

An elderly gent says to his wife, “I’ve got something special planned for this evening. We’re gonna have super sex!”

The wife replied, “I’ll have the soup.”

Lear noted that people used to tell each other jokes a lot but the practice has declined. I think that’s right, and I’m not sure why. Tiresome wingnuts would claim it’s because people are too easily offended now, but I don’t think that’s it. I suspect it’s because we’re sharing funny animal gifs instead.

It’s a humid, windy night in the swamp. Owls are hooting, insects are trilling and frogs are singing in anticipation of an approaching storm. I usually enjoy storms too, but I’m not so stoked about this one because I have to drive to Tampa this morning, so I’m trying to figure out how to both avoid rush hour traffic and get my errand completed in time to make it home before the squall line arrives.

Wind speeds are expected to be in the 40 to 50 MPH range with gusts up to 70! Even I’m not foolish enough to drive in that, so if I get stuck in town, that’s okay — I have friends I can hole up with. But lately, I dislike spending time away from my lovely husband and dogs.

And finally, from HuffPo, the most Trumpublican headline ever:

Police Report: Trump County Chair Threatened To Rape Boss’s Wife, Then Kill Him

Jonathan Stone, a former New Hampshire police officer, has been a part of Trump’s campaign since 2016, when he gave Trump an inscribed AR-15 assault rifle.

Nice party you have there, Republicans. It would be a shame if it were overtaken by violent, depraved grifters. Oh wait…

On The Road – way2blue – Aitutaki, Cook Islands [2 of 3]

way2blue

Aitutaki is the second most populated island of archipelago, with ~1500 residents, situated within a triangular-shaped lagoon.  We stayed at a small resort within the elbow of the main island facing the inner lagoon rather than the Pacific Ocean.  In contrast to Rarotonga, Aitutaki has no dogs.  Not one.   But lots of chickens.  I asked the owner of our resort how people distinguish one’s chickens from another’s.  She laughed to say they’re all wild

Screen shot of an air raid alert map of Ukraine from 7:49 PM EDT on 10 APR 2024. Over 2/3rds of Ukraine are under air raid alert, which is colored in red on the map.

(Air raid alert map of Ukraine, 8:58 PM EDT, 10 APR 2024)

As you can see above, almost all of Ukraine is once again under an air raid alert.

The Ukrainian Air Force is reporting at least seven russian Tu-95 bombers taking off, indicating that early this morning Ukraine is likely to be under massive missile attack. Seven combat aircraft are heading to destroy and kill.

Lauren Boebert Will Probably Win CO-4

by @heymistermix.com|  April 10, 20246:50 pm| 60 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I was gone for a week to see the eclipse — I’ll have a couple posts on some political/social aspects of some of my travel experiences in a few days.  As part of my trip to see totality in Texas, I traveled through CO-4, the eastern Colorado district that Lauren Boebert parachuted into after realizing that she would lose CO-3.   As you might recall, Ken Buck tried to screw Boebert over by quitting in a way that forced a special election.  Unfortunately, the state GOP has sided with Boebert in two ways.

First, they demanded that their nominee for the special election sign a pledge not to run for the seat in the primary.  Greg Lopez, the Republican nominee for the special, signed that pledge.

Second, they endorsed Boebert at their convention in Pueblo and shat upon the other candidates who had the temerity to challenge the God-emperor Trump’s decision to anoint St Lauren as the rightful heir to the House of Buck.

On the ground in CO-4, I didn’t see a single Boebert sign.  I did see signs for Richard Holtorf, the guy who would have probably replaced Ken Buck if Boebert hadn’t decided to leave CO-3.  Holtorf is pissed because he was screwed over, but he’ll probably make the primary ballot because he’s gathered enough signatures to do so despite the state GOP’s wishes.

It’s hard to feel sorry for a guy like Holtorf, who wears a AR-15 tie pin and would probably have exactly the same voting record as Boebert if he were elected.  Still, I would have liked to see Boebert flushed from our politics.  I don’t know enough about CO-4 politics to know if the voters there might still reject Boebert, but I do know that there are a shitload of Trump signs and flags along the highway, and his supporters know that he’s behind Boebert.  It’s a R+13 district, so probably not worth putting serious money behind a Democratic challenger.

As someone whose main interest in politics is the House of Representatives, it’s tough to see this, but here we are.  I invite those who know more about Colorado politics to correct me if I’m wrong.
