Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

This really is a full service blog.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

The revolution will be supervised.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

War for Ukraine Day 1,345: Outgoing!

by Adam L Silverman|  October 31, 202510:30 pm| 11 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

I’m still recovering from my very long week and am deeply fried. So I’m going to keep this on the shorter side so I can rack out.

Ukraine has launched a massive response to Russia’s attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure over the past several days.

Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels report approximately 700 drones heading toward Russian regions, including Moscow region.

We Are Working to Ensure Good News for Ukraine – And It Will Come – Address by the President

31 October 2025 – 20:40

Dear Ukrainians!

Today we have new sanctions decisions – over 50 individuals, the majority of them Russians who work for the Russian war against Ukraine, for the Russian military production, and also for propaganda. Of course, we will share our sanction decisions with partner countries as well, so that they support this entirely justified pressure on Russia for its war. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has also carried out preparatory work to synchronize the 19th EU sanctions package within our jurisdiction. And the Europeans are already preparing the 20th sanctions package – we have submitted proposals to our partners. I held a coordination meeting – a recap of this year’s sanctions. Together with the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of our state, and the Foreign Intelligence Service, we identified the key tasks to be completed by the end of the year: targeting the Russian tanker fleet, Russian energy companies, and all enterprises and entities that help sustain the Russian military production. It is important that partners take our arguments into account when preparing their pressure.

I want to especially thank our warriors for their long-range sanctions against Russia – there have been more than 160 hits on enemy fuel infrastructure since the start of this year alone, with hundreds more operations carried out directly against their war machine. I thank all our special services for this: the Security Service of Ukraine, the intelligence agencies, and the army. Ukrainians are most effective when we act together and align our goals.

Our Foreign Intelligence fulfilled the task of locating specific, precise addresses of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. We are providing our partners with lists – lists of children who must be returned. This is a sensitive issue, with a great deal of quiet diplomatic work underway. And to foil any Russian attempt to claim they supposedly know nothing about these children, we are ensuring that addresses are included as well. The first such list –containing over 300 surnames, first names, and addresses of the abducted children – will be on the desks of all the leaders assisting us in this effort.

There were many military reports today – detailed updates from the front. Of course, Pokrovsk is our priority. We continue to destroy the occupier, and that is what matters most – to stop Russian strikes wherever and whenever possible. The Russians want to turn our entire country into what they are doing to Pokrovsk, what they are doing to Kupyansk, and other towns and communities. They must be halted where they have reached – and destroyed there. I thank each of our units, every soldier, sergeant, and officer who defends our positions and defends our state.

One more thing.

Today I held several meetings on our foreign policy activity for the week ahead – covering weapons for Ukraine, financial support, and our shared political outcomes in relations between Ukraine and the European Union. We are working to ensure good news for Ukraine – and it will come. I am confident. We thank everyone who is helping us! I thank everyone who is fighting for our state, for Ukraine, as they would for themselves.

Glory to Ukraine!

He also did a press conference today. Here’s the video:

Theology PhD and Georgian Orthodox priest Fr. Aleksi Kshutashvili also helped block Rustaveli Ave today. He told Publika:

Brave Georgian protesters have blocked the Rustaveli Ave for the 338th night in a row, standing against a repressive, pro-Russian, illegitimate regime.

Blocking the road now carries a 15-day sentence and up to two years for repeated ‘offenses’. ~100 have already been arrested.

Anastasia Zinovkina, a Russian anti-Putin activist, is being tortured in a prison in Georgia. She is in terrible pain, medically and even physically neglected (she fell down and was not aided to get up for 3 hours), and kept in an unsanitary condition.

From KWCH 12 News:

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A National Guardsman accused of agreeing to spy for Russian intelligence appeared in federal court Thursday in Kansas, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Canyon Anthony Amarys, 28, of Alamogordo, New Mexico, was arrested on October 28 for attempting to violate the Export Control Reform Act, which restricts the export of certain defense goods without a license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The indictment states that in February 2025, Amarys met with someone he believed to be a Russian intelligence agent and signed an agreement to establish a covert relationship. He agreed to photograph a military installation at Fort Riley, Kansas, and procure a helicopter radio for the Russian military.

In March 2025, Amarys purchased the helicopter radio and traveled to Kansas to export it to a purported recipient in Romania, aware that it would be illegally diverted to Russia. Investigators later recovered the radio during a court-authorized search.

The FBI Kansas City field office is investigating the case with support from various federal and military agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Rask and Trial Attorney David Ryan are prosecuting the case.

From EuroMaidan Press:

Ukrainian naval forces carried out precision strikes inside Russian territory using Neptune cruise missiles, targeting the Orlovskaya thermal power plant in Oryol Oblast and the Novobryansk electrical substation in Bryansk Oblast, the Ukrainian Navy reported.

The strikes highlight Ukraine’s expanding ability to strike critical infrastructure deep inside Russia, targeting energy facilities that sustain military operations. By disrupting power to key military enterprises, Kyiv aims to degrade Russian logistical capacity and hinder their operational effectiveness.

Both facilities supply electricity to Russian military enterprises, making their destruction a significant disruption to enemy logistics and operations.

The Navy emphasized that the operation demonstrates Ukraine’s growing ability to strike critical infrastructure far from the frontlines. “Ukrainian forces continue to show that no enemy rear is safe,” the military statement said.

The strike follows a series of Ukrainian attacks on energy and logistics hubs in recent months, aimed at weakening Russia’s capacity to sustain military operations and disrupt supply chains across multiple regions.

Can Something Good Come Out of Something Awful? 3

From Dan Pfeiffer

Can Something Good Come Out of Something Awful? Can Something Good Come Out of Something Awful? 1 Can Something Good Come Out of Something Awful? 2

This shift is happening at the exact moment Trump, Stephen Miller, and the rest of the GOP are waging their loudest anti-immigration crusade. That tells us something profound:

Trump’s mass deportation agenda is so cruel, so extreme, and so visible that it is actually making Americans more pro-immigration.

This could be a foundational shift in American politics. If it continues (a big if), the next Democratic president could be positioned to:

  • Restructure and reform ICE from the ground up
  • Purge its leadership
  • End the cruelty baked into its enforcement practices
  • Pass comprehensive immigration reform that secures the border and provides a path to citizenship for millions

Democrats must undo the political damage of the Biden years and rebuild trust with the electorate on immigration, but if we do we can make incredible progress on fixing immigration.

And that would be the ultimate irony.

The US will never be a world power again in the way that it was – but it’s pretty clear to me that we no longer deserve to have the role we had before.  Beacon of democracy?   I don’t think so.

Still, I know I have more hope than some of you.  All the flaws that have been identified?  All the things in the constitution that relied on the enemy not being within?  Those things can be changed, and we might just come out of this with a stronger democracy than before.

How Republicans Messed Up on Project 2025 (Paul Krugman)

How Republicans messed up on Project 2025 (Paul Krugman) 1

Their hate, their greed, their short-sightedness – and the law of unintended consequences – will be their undoing.

(The line above is my opinion.  The rest of this is Paul Krugman.)

Federal funding for SNAP, the nutritional aid program still often referred to as food stamps, ends tonight. This will have catastrophic impacts on 42 million Americans, the great majority of them children, elderly or disabled.

Millions more Americans are about to discover that health insurance has become vastly more expensive, in many cases unaffordable.
Why are these terrible things happening? At a basic level they’re happening because Republicans want them to happen. Drastic cuts in food stamps and health care programs were central planks in Project 2025, which is indeed the Trump administration’s policy platform, and were written into legislation in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that passed last summer.

But the consequences of these cruel intentions weren’t supposed to be this obvious, this early. The harshest provisions of the OBBBA were backloaded, set to kick in after the midterm elections. For example, draconian work requirements for Medicaid — which would effectively throw millions off the program, largely by imposing paperwork burdens low-wage workers can’t overcome — weren’t scheduled to take effect until the end of 2026.

Why the backloading? Presumably Republicans believed that by the time Americans woke up to what was happening, the G.O.P. would have effectively consolidated one-party rule, making future elections irrelevant.

Instead, however, the mask is being ripped off right now, well ahead of schedule.

I guess it’s possible that Republicans will manage to limit the political damage by claiming — completely falsely — that the suffering about to hit millions is being caused by Democrats who want to lavish benefits on illegal immigrants and pay for sex change operations. That’s not hyperbole. Here’s the banner currently at the top of the Agriculture Department’s SNAP data page — its data page!

In the past it would have been unthinkable to display political propaganda, let alone grotesquely dishonest propaganda, on government data sites. But we’re in a new world.

We’ll just have to see how all this plays politically. But it’s clear that Republicans messed up badly on the implementation of Project 2025. Immense cruelty was always part of the plan, but policy wasn’t supposed to get this cruel, this soon.

So what went wrong? I’d attribute it to a combination of policy ignorance, visceral hatred of doing anything that helps people in need, and the Epstein files. (Seriously.)

Read the whole thing.   It’s really very good.

There Are Initial Details on the Impact of U.S. and European Sanctions Against Russian Oil Companies, and It Is Quite Tangible – Address by the President

30 October 2025 – 19:30

Fellow Ukrainians!

Today, our energy workers have been working throughout the day – from Zaporizhzhia and the Mykolaiv region to the Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsia regions – following the Russian strike. Unfortunately, there were hits, and the target was the energy infrastructure. We are doing everything possible to restore it and are adding reserves. I want to thank every repair crew, all utility services involved, energy companies, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine – this is truly a nationwide effort. Everywhere the Russians have destroyed, Ukrainians are rebuilding. It is important that every community devote maximum attention and resources to this. The strike was complex – a combined, deliberately calculated one, designed to make it difficult to counter. There were missiles as well, including ballistic and air-launched ballistic types. In total, 52 missiles and more than six hundred strike drones were launched, around four hundred of them “shaheds.” Most of the drones were neutralized, and two-thirds of the missiles were also shot down. Ukraine’s air defense is saving a significant part of our infrastructure, and this remains the top priority – air defense systems and missiles for them. We are working on this every day. And also our long-range capabilities – our entirely justified responses to what Russia is doing against Ukraine and our people. A few hours ago there was a strike on the Slovyansk Thermal Power Plant – a strike with Russian bombs. Sadly, two people were killed. My condolences. There are also wounded. This is outright terror. Normal people don’t wage war like this, and the world must respond appropriately to such Russian warfare. It is very important that we have specific agreements with Norway precisely in the field of energy – support for our gas purchases. We also have agreements with Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, and we are working with them on equipment for electricity generation. We are counting on the support of the European Commission as well. Today, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine is having a meeting with representatives of the Group of Seven – the G7 energy ministers – countries that certainly can and will support Ukraine. We are ensuring such cooperation with them. The Head of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service presented a report today. There are initial details on the impact of U.S. and European sanctions against Russian oil companies, and it is quite tangible. Oil exports are the foundation of Russia’s arrogance, and if sanctions are maintained and strengthened, Russia will suffer significant losses. They could amount to at least 50 billion dollars next year, which is a strong argument for Russia to develop a motive to end this war. We will continue creating more such arguments. Ukraine is already in contact with the European Union regarding the twentieth sanctions package – we are submitting our proposals. We are also engaging with the American side. We count on key states to maintain this course of action. We already see that there will be a reduction in imports of Russian oil by India and China, and it is important to ensure that there are no sanctions loopholes through third countries. A reduction in Russian oil means a reduction in Russia’s war, and there must be no exceptions to this – for anyone, including Hungary. The Russians are already considering how to sell off their enterprises, particularly in Europe, as these will no longer be able to operate. Of course, there were many military reports today – primarily concerning the Pokrovsk sector, the Donetsk region in general, and the areas bordering the Dnipro region. We are destroying the occupier with all our might. I want to thank every soldier, every sergeant, and every officer who is fighting for Ukraine and securing the results Ukraine needs despite everything. We are defending our positions; we are defending our state.

Glory to Ukraine!

1/ A new report by the Foreign Policy Centre (FPC) argues that Georgia has evolved from a passive transit country into a strategic hub helping Russia circumvent Western sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

2/ The report, titled “Dealing with the Sanctions Bubble in Georgia,” describes a growing ecosystem of intermediaries, offshore jurisdictions, and political enablers that turn sanctions into profit — a system the authors call a “sanctions bubble.”

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

3/ According to FPC’s findings, Russia-linked financial and trade flows — including re-exports, remittances, and tourism — accounted for 14.5% of Georgia’s GDP in 2022. The report highlights several alarming trends:

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

4/ Over 37,400 Russian companies have been registered in Georgia since 2022, many through offshore channels.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

5/ 61% of Georgia’s oil imports now come from Russia, raising concerns of “origin laundering”, where Russian oil is re-labelled as Georgian and exported to Europe.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

6/ Imports of dual-use technologies, including microchips and electronics, have sharply increased, and could be re-exported to Russia for military use.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

7/ Georgia is a major re-exporter of vehicles to Central Asia, many of which eventually reach Russia through indirect routes.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

10/ The report cautions that if the “sanctions bubble” bursts, Georgia’s economy could face severe collapse, driven by its growing dependence on Russian capital, corruption risks, and loss of Western trust.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

(that should’ve been 9)

10/ The authors urge Western governments to tighten sanction enforcement involving Georgia, target oligarchs and enablers rather than the public, and help Georgian businesses reduce exposure to Russian influence to avoid a potential financial and political crisis.

— Publika.ge (@publikage.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 8:02 AM

Georgians will win this.
The only questions are how soon and at what cost.

The DPRK:

North Korea and Russia are rapidly building their first road bridge to enhance logistics and expand military and economic ties. Frontelligence Insight has analyzed satellite imagery and project documents to estimate its completion and potential impact. 🧵Thread:

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

2/ Today, Russia and North Korea have no direct road connection. The only land crossing is the 1950s-era Korea – Russia Friendship Railroad Bridge. Air and maritime routes, via Pyongyang Airport and ports like Rajin, exist, but their capacity and costs are often suboptimal.

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

4/ Both countries are building entry ports with border control and customs zones. The North Korean side appears ahead, with a complex of buildings likely intended for administrative, storage, and inspection functions to manage cargo and passenger flows.

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

5/ On the Russian side, the “Khasan” checkpoint with five lanes is planned: 2 for cargo, 1 for oversized vehicles, one for buses, and one for cars. Initial capacity is 300 vehicles per day (~109,500 per year), expandable to 800 per day (~292,000 per year).

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

6/ Cargo trucks are prioritized, expected to account for 200 of the 300 daily vehicles. Passenger traffic is capped at 2,850 people per day. For context, Zabaikalsk checkpoint on the China–Russia border handled just 440 vehicles per day in 2024

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

7/ At the current pace, barring severe weather-related delays, the bridge and its supporting infrastructure are expected to be completed by mid-2026, indicating that the project remains on schedule.

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

8/ We assess that North Korea’s trade with Russia is unlikely to suddenly surge, whether measured against either country’s GDP or their share of overall exports, given the limited range of mutually sought goods, North Korea’s purchasing power, and its relatively small population

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

9/ In short, the Khasan–Tumangang bridge will boost Russia-North Korea economic and military cooperation and provide Pyongyang more leverage with Beijing, but it is unlikely to alter the regional balance or challenge China as North Korea’s dominant trade partner

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

10/ Russia is likely to continue its barter of resources and technology for people, receiving both workers and soldiers. While Korean cheap labor won’t solve Russia’s workforce shortage, it could provide limited relief and support both infrastructure and military projects.

— Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) October 30, 2025 at 1:48 AM

11/ Thank you for reading. This report and satellite imagery would not be possible without your support, which keeps our project independent. We are grateful to our supporters and welcome new donations as many investigations are set to release next month:

The GOP started this shut down with "Mwahahahaha Puppetmaster Vought will annihilate our political foes" and now they're "The democrats are causing this chaos we just want to be good stewards" and Thune is having a big boohoo on the senate floor.
