Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Everybody saw this coming.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

When we show up, we win.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Seriously, it’s impossible to argue with this, am I right?

He must be able to see the future!

Prediction: Lots of twitter vaccine experts will be switching their major to RICO indictments this week.

Did You Have Sunday or Monday As Your Choice in the Pool?

If so, you may be a winner!

I think we should have given the office pool blog pool another dimension – not just picking the day that Trump would resume witness tampering, but also the case.  Or perhaps we should at least have to pick WHO he would be attacking.

Otherwise, it’s just too easy!

So many choices!

Holy shit.

This is bad strategy for Trump, and it is most assuredly giving heartburn to the attorneys who were either stupid, short-sighted, or both, when they took him on as a client, and if Judge Chutkan is true to her word, as I expect her to be, it surely will make the J6 Coup Trial happen sooner than it might have otherwise.

Win-win for us, I guess.

Oh, and I think someone sped up the clock, because apparently even the witnesses who were supposed to appear before the Grand Jury TOMORROW in GA are there today.

BREAKING: everyone’s going today. https://t.co/dMmDxCQWF5

I was not prepared to bake anything before tomorrow!  Luckily, i have buttermilk in the house, so I can choose between both the chocolate fudge cake and the buttermilk cornmeal cherry galette.

Oh, and I heard 2 things on a podcast this morning that were new to me: 1) that apparently up to 18 people may be part of the indictment in GA (blows the dice… come on, Lindsay) and that every day of his life Donald Trump has woken up with the fear of going to prison.  Of all the things I worry about, going to prison has not yet been one of them!

Fuck Their Feelings (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  August 14, 202312:04 pm| 198 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Mainstream media outlets were caught off guard by Donald Trump’s electoral college victory in 2016, and one of the most annoying measures they took to avoid getting blindsided in the future was to hire Trump voter-whisperers as analysts and columnists. That and the damned diner stories!

Arguably, recalibrating coverage made sense. But staging Cletus safaris and importing red state apologists to wag their fingers at readers who are appalled by Trump and his voters was the wrong response because it didn’t add anything of value to the conversation.

WaPo’s Gary Abernathy is a prime example of the genre. He has spent the past five years defending Trump voters as salt of the earth types who embraced Trump as a reaction to elite disdain. He confidently predicted they’d reject Trump after he tried to overthrow the government and install himself as dictator. Then he made excuses for them when they didn’t.

For those of us who live among Trump die-hards and/or count Trumpists among our loved ones, the question posed in the title of Abernathy’s column today (gift link) is a valid one: “On Trump, no one is changing their mind. So what do we do now?”

Instead of engaging his own question honestly, Abernathy gets knotted up in special pleading about Smith’s January 6 indictment, i.e., Trump is innocent until proven guilty. That’s fine as far as it goes, but we all witnessed — and are victims of — the crimes alleged, and Trump is still lying about the 2020 election and inciting sporadic violence in the run-up to 2024.

Moreover, Abernathy aims a squid cloud of butt-hurt at Never-Trump Repub Tom Nichols, who actually did offer an answer to the titular question, for the recommendation Nichols made to address the real and pressing problem of the Trump cult:

Nichols declared that “every American citizen who cares about the Constitution should affirm, without hesitation, that any form of association with Trump is reprehensible, that each of us will draw moral conclusions about anyone who continues to support him, and that these conclusions will guide both our political and personal choices.”

Let me understand: I’m supposed to jeopardize my relationship with my parents (on the eve of their 70th wedding anniversary no less) along with other treasured family members and lifelong friends by asserting a “moral conclusion” that their support for Trump makes them unworthy of further association? Not in this lifetime.

Abernathy is an ass whose babbling isn’t particularly worth discussing except possibly as an example of a larger problem, i.e., the party’s unwillingness to come to grips with reality. Among Repubs, there’s the 30% to 40% who are still in the cult, and there’s an additional plurality, of similar or larger size, who claim to be ready to move on but are unwilling to do the work that moving on demands.

Nichols isn’t denouncing anyone who refuses to cut all ties with Trump supporters. He’s saying we’ve got to stop indulging their delusions to move forward and save our democracy. He’s right, and if the cultists demand deference to their delusions as the price of maintaining a relationship, that’s on them.

Fuck their feelings.

Domestic Terrorism Open Thread: Ammon Bundy Assumes the Family Mantle

by Anne Laurie|  August 13, 20238:22 pm| 102 Comments

Got this video from a source of Ammon Bundy getting arrested. Was told it occurred at a football fundraiser in Emmett. Bundy’s People’s Rights Network also sent out a blast text. We are working to verify more information: pic.twitter.com/9bqjUpLfGM

— Morgan Romero (@MorganRomeroTV) August 12, 2023

Last info I could find about his father Cliven, rumors were that the old man was rapidly sinking into dementia. Which may have been why favored son Ammon started the Malheur Wildlife Refuge occupation in Oregon back in 2014, to establish his credentials as the new leader, Clive’s chosen inheritor.

Federal intervention and the pandemic have tamped down (but did not end) Ammon’s determination to starting the next ‘freedumb uprising’ — grifting the rubes as he went, of course — but there’s a new twist:

The Gem County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that Ammon Bundy has been arrested.https://t.co/uRchmiYIrM

— CBS2 News (@CBS2Boise) August 12, 2023

Local news KTVB7:

… The legal battle between Bundy and the hospital began when Bundy, Diego Rodriguez, and their organizations organized days of protests at the hospital. They claimed Rodriguez’ infant grandson was “medically kidnapped” by doctors and Child Protective Services (CPS). The “Baby Cyrus” protests led to the hospital having to go into lockdown for nearly two hours on March 15, 2022. The hospital had to divert patients to other providers and prohibit visitors.

Following the lawsuit, Bundy refused to participate in legal proceedings but began to harass witnesses in the lawsuit. Attorneys for St. Luke’s Health System then filed a motion for contempt against Diego Rodriguez and his Freedom Man Press over continued harassment of witnesses in St. Luke’s defamation case against him, Ammon Bundy and their organizations.

Bundy ended up losing that legal battle. A jury ordered that he and Rodriguez must pay St. Luke’s and other plaintiffs damages exceeding $52 million stemming from ongoing protests and harassment…

Per the Idaho Statesman:

District Judge Lynn Norton of Idaho’s 4th Judicial District issued the arrest warrant for Bundy after he violated a court order to avoid witness harassment and intimidation in a since-resolved civil lawsuit against him, the Statesman previously reported. The civil warrant for Bundy was issued in April for failure to obey a preliminary injunction order, Patrick Orr, spokesperson for the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed to the Statesman by phone Saturday. Bundy ran as an independent candidate for Idaho governor in November 2022. Although he failed to unseat incumbent Republican Gov. Brad Little, Bundy earned more than 100,000 votes, or about 17% of the vote. On Saturday morning, members of Bundy’s People’s Rights Network issued a “call to action” to supporters to show up outside the Gem County Sheriff’s Office, which is in a building adjacent to the jail. Since Bundy’s arrest, a number of people had called the jail to discuss his status, White said, while others were showing up in person.

— Ryan Busse (@ryandbusse) August 13, 2023

Per the Daily Beast, “Ammon Bundy Wants Arrest to Make Him a Martyr, Hospital Lawyer Claims”:

… Erik Stidham, a lawyer for St. Luke’s Health System, told The Daily Beast in a statement, “Mr. Bundy could easily get out of jail now by paying an extremely low bond. He is not paying the bond because he wants to use his arrest and time in jail to further a false narrative that he is some kind of martyr.”

“Mr. Bundy is not a martyr, he is a grifter who continues to grift his followers by asking them to shield him [from] paying damages and facing the contempt charges,” Stidham added.

Stidham led the legal team that won a $52 million judgment against Bundy, an associate, and three organizations after a defamation trial that Bundy boycotted.

A judge found him in contempt for failing to show up for legal proceedings, and an arrest warrant was issued in April.

In an Aug. 10 video posted on social media, Bundy bragged about all the things he has been doing instead of answering the arrest warrant—including traveling to multiple states and Mexico…

The arrest is the latest legal development in Bundy’s ongoing battle with St. Luke’s, which began after he organized days of protests, claiming an associate’s grandson was kidnapped by the hospital. In reality, 10-month-old “Baby Cyrus” was taken into protective custody after officials determined he was malnourished.

The protests spurred authorities to arrest Bundy, then a gubernatorial candidate, for trespassing outside of the hospital last March. At the time, Bundy insisted that the infant was “medically kidnapped” over a “missed non-emergency doctor’s appointment.”

The allegations spurred St. Luke’s to file a defamation suit against Bundy and Diego Rodriguez, who is Baby Cyrus’ grandfather and an activist in Bundy’s far-right People’s Rights Network (PRN).

During the course of the case, the Gem County Sheriff briefly refused to serve legal papers to Bundy on his property out of concern for his deputies’ safety—after Bundy threatened to greet law enforcement on his doorstep with a shotgun…

On Friday, the hospital filed a new complaint against Bundy, accusing him of hiding assets to “frustrate” efforts to collect their damages. In the complaint, the health-care system and other plaintiffs asked to void any transfers of property of assets made by Bundy and his family.

Bundy sold his his $1 million home in December in what the filing called a “sham transaction.” The hospital’s filing states that the Bundys are still on the property.

Idaho People's Rights Network (PRN) leader Garth Gaylord just streamed his repeated calls threatening Gem Co. Sheriff's Office over the Ammon Bundy arrest.

PRN is telling its activists to converge on the Sheriff's office in Emmett. Potentially volatile situation. pic.twitter.com/lChXJIhbuy

— Devin Burghart (@dburghart) August 12, 2023

Also of significance, given the $26 million Ammon Bundy now owes, in addition to his home valued at over $1 million, "Ammon Bundy owns or controls, through various entities, other real property estimated to have a collective market value in excess of $5,000,000." pic.twitter.com/WKMObdTUjG

UPDATE: Gem County Jail staff confirms #AmmonBundy bonded out of jail last night. So he was given a court date by Ada County, because that’s where the contempt charge is from. We will work to find out when his hearing is scheduled for.

Russian terrorists must feel only one thing: they will be destroyed – address by the President of Ukraine

13 August 2023 – 22:19

Fellow Ukrainians!

Today, Russian invaders brutally attacked Kherson region. There are dead and wounded.

At 4 am, the village of Veletenske was shelled. A house caught fire. A guy was wounded: he has severe burns, he is now in an intensive care unit.

9 am – the occupiers attacked the village of Shyroka Balka. They used artillery. Five people were killed.

Among them was a baby girl, 22 days old. Her brother, who was only 12 years old, was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, they could not save him. He died from severe wounds. The children’s mother – her name was Olesia, she was only 39 years old – died. My condolences!

Around the same time, the village of Stanislav was shelled. Two people were wounded, two were killed. The men were 71 years old and 57 years old.

In total, from the beginning of this day until 6 pm, there have already been 17 reports of shelling from Kherson region alone. Other regions include Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donbas, Kharkiv, the border areas with Russia in the northeast.

Everywhere our warriors retaliate against the occupiers’ terror. There is not a single day when Russian evil does not get our completely fair retaliation.

Every occupier destroyed, every piece of Russian equipment burned, fire instead of their headquarters and warehouses, the very eloquent smoke on Kerch bridge and more – all this proves that we will not leave any of Russia’s crimes unanswered. And each of our warriors who gives Ukraine results on the frontline – along the entire frontline from Kharkiv to Kherson – each of our warriors has the opportunity to bring justice to Ukraine.

Everyone who helps our warriors. Now there are only two personal lines of behavior: either you fight for Ukraine, or you help fight and save lives.

Today, there is much to thank the 95th separate airborne assault brigade for: their resilience and results in the battles in the Kupyansk sector. Well done, warriors! Powerful.

The 1st battalion of the 67th separate mechanized brigade, also in the Kupyansk sector, acted heroically and courageously. Thank you!

The paratroopers of our glorious “Seventy-ninth” in the Maryinka sector – thank you, warriors!

Melitopol and Berdyansk direction – I thank every warrior who gives Ukraine the necessary results!

Bakhmut direction – well done, guys!

Every time we have something to thank our warriors for, Ukraine becomes closer to justice, closer to victory. And Russian murderers on our land become closer to destruction.

This is the only way we can create the conditions for the whole of Ukraine to become free and safe again.

Russian terrorists must feel only one thing: they will be destroyed.

And one more thing. Behind every report of shelling and injuries of our people, there are stories of heroism of our Ukrainian doctors and nurses working in the frontline areas.

I am grateful to all our medical workers who, despite everything, save lives!

Today, I would like to recognize those who have shown themselves the most in helping our people in Kherson region.

Doctors: Vasyl Chystiakov, Natalia Kyniv, Artur Rakhimov, Ivan Ososkalo. This is a team from the Kherson Regional Clinical Hospital.

Nurses: Iryna Tytarenko, Olena Bondar, Larysa Shmyhol.

Medics from the ambulance teams who helped the wounded in the villages of Stanislav, Komyshany and Shyroka Balka: Natalia Pupenko, Ilona Shylo, Victoria Hanzha, Maryna Shramkova, Svitlana Stoliarova.

Kherson’s ambulance: emergency medicine doctor Pavlo Dziuba and feldsher Vitalii Biriukov, both sent to Kherson region from Sumy for reinforcement.

Feldshers: Natalia Adriyanova and Vitalii Rudakov.

Kherson city hospital: surgeons Serhiy Bondaruk, Serhiy Tonkontsov and Viktor Yakovenko.

I thank you, each and every one of you, and all your colleagues, for every life saved!

The Ukrainian people are extremely brave and courageous. We know that freedom is priceless, and we know how to defend it. We know how to protect life. And we have to remember that every day must bring results in the defense of Ukraine. Not a single day should be wasted! At the front, in the areas near the front, everywhere in the rear, and, very importantly, by every diplomatic mission of Ukraine.

Weapons for our warriors, support for our state, and legal responsibility for Russian terrorists. Ukraine will definitely prevail!

But this will be our common result. Of all those who are fighting and working for Ukraine.

Glory to Ukraine!

Dragonfly attacks.

“Serhiy Ryzhenko, chief medical officer of the Mechnikov hospital in Dnipro, where many of the most seriously wounded are treated, said he was receiving between 50 & 100 soldiers a day, with mines being second to artillery as the cause of their injuries” https://t.co/7XxMkx9tCV

More details from The Guardian:

Ukraine is now the most heavily mined country on Earth and its army is suffering from a critical shortage of men and equipment able to clear the frontlines, the country’s defence minister has said, as soldiers spoke of heavy casualties in the engineering brigades.

In an urgent appeal to allies, Oleksii Reznikov told the Guardian his soldiers were unearthing five mines for every square metre in places, laid by Russian troops to try to thwart Ukraine’s counteroffensive.

He said the vast minefields could be traversed, but that it was critically important that allies “expand and expedite” the training already being provided by some nations, including Britain.

The number of sappers in the Ukrainian armed forces was nowhere near enough to get through the complex Russian defences on the vast 600-mile (1,000km) front, with mine clearing units targeted with heavy fire.

Defence ministry officials in Kyiv suggested there was an opportunity for countries such as Japan that do not want to provide lethal aid to offer support in the form of mine clearing equipment and training.

Reznikov said: “Today, Ukraine is the most heavily mined country in the world. Hundreds of kilometres of minefields, millions of explosive devices, in some parts of the frontline up to five mines per square metre.

“Russian minefields are a serious obstacle for our troops, but not insurmountable. We have skilled sappers and modern equipment, but they are extremely insufficient for the front that stretches hundreds of kilometres in the east and south of Ukraine.”

Some of the mines littering the country have been laid by Ukrainian forces to protect their own defensive lines, but the vast majority are Russian.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has complained that having to wait for western delivery of arms and delay the start of this year’s counteroffensive allowed Russia to lay millions of mines ahead of their positions.

Ukraine has five engineering battalions, divided into 200 brigades, which as of May, before the start of this year’s counteroffensive, were each 30 strong.

According to testimony from the front, the numbers of active mine clearers is now significantly lower. The killing of sappers and officers is said to be the most highly prized by the Russian forces.

One brigade active around Staromaiorske, a recently liberated village in the Donetsk region, said it was 30-strong on paper but that it had 13 men in reality, of whom only five were active as a result of injury. Two members of the unit lost limbs in the last fortnight.

Serhiy Ryzhenko, the chief medical officer of the Mechnikov hospital in Dnipro, where many of the most seriously wounded are treated, said he was receiving between 50 and 100 soldiers a day, with mines being second to artillery as the cause of their injuries.

At a meeting in July in Ramstein in Germany of the alliance of 54 countries supporting Ukraine, Lithuania, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark agreed train and equip Ukrainian mine clearing units. Other countries were invited to join.

Reznikov said the initiative had unlocked donations, but that more was desperately needed from a wider range of partners.

“At this stage of our de-occupation campaign we critically need more mine clearance equipment, from minesweeping trawls to Bangalore torpedoes,” he said.

Something to remember this week as we trash Trump voters:

People who voted for Trump:

– were also part of the resistance that stopped him from stealing votes in GA and AZ.

– were also part of the jury that held him liable for sexual assault.

– were also part of grand juries that voted to indict him.

– are also capable of convicting him for his crimes.

Don’t fall for the artificial hype around him.

The rule of law still matters to most.
