Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Republicans do not trust women.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

All hail the time of the bunny!

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

It was a VERY long day and I’m just now at 11:20 PM EDT gotten a few minutes to do a very brief Monday night update. Then I’m going to get the grime off and rack out. So everyone is preemptively welcome.

All Deep-Strike Goals Must Be Fully Locked In by Year’s End, including Expansion of Our Long-Range Footprint – Address by the President

27 October 2025 – 19:47

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

I held a Staff meeting today – much of the discussion focused on our long-range sanctions against Russia and the results of our responses to Russian attacks. In particular, we spoke with manufacturers of weapons – weapons for deep strikes. This is the right format for a Staff meeting – bringing together manufacturers, those responsible for the effective employment of our drones and missiles, those in charge of funding, as well as diplomats. We are providing three-year contracts for the most effective manufacturers. We are expanding this long-contract approach so that both manufacturers and our army have greater certainty. At every Staff meeting, I will check the pace of contracting: this must be implemented. Under any scenario, Ukraine must always – and will always – have sufficient long-range capabilities. Both now, in wartime, and no less afterward – as part of the security guarantees for our future, for our children. Long-range capability is a component of independence and will be the greatest component for ensuring peace. Global sanctions and our pinpoint precision are practically syncing up to end this war on terms fair for Ukraine. All deep-strike goals must be fully locked in by year’s end, including expansion of our long-range footprint. I thank every unit and every element of Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces for their accuracy. I thank our manufacturers – those who are fully delivering on the tasks set. The funding is secured.

We are working practically on a daily basis on air defense as well, engaging with every partner that can help with air defense systems and also with missiles.

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine delivered a report. It is defense cooperation with partners that is the top priority of our foreign policy. And it is important that every week bring results. Last week was exactly that – significant. This week should also be a positive one for our defense.

I have already spoken today with the representative of Croatia – the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense – about the next defense package and European programs supporting defense production. I also spoke today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia – the Baltic states will continue to be among the most active in support.

Today, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine delivered a report. I want to thank all our people working on recovery across the regions. There are many difficult situations, particularly in the Chernihiv region, in border areas of other regions, and near the frontline. But it is important that recovery continues everywhere, and our people – repair crews, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and energy companies – are working heroically. I thank all of you for this.

I spoke with our military – special attention is focused on Pokrovsk and the neighboring areas. That is where the occupier has concentrated its largest assault forces and where there is significant assault activity. Battles continue in the city as well: it is Pokrovsk that is their main objective. And every result achieved by our forces in this sector is a result for all of Ukraine, for the entire defense of our state. I thank everyone who understands this. I thank everyone who is fighting for Ukraine!

Glory to Ukraine!

I don’t  have a lot to add to the discourse these days. I’m afraid most days I’m just trying to stay busy enough to wade through the grief of losing my dad and two friends in less than two months without being overwhelmed.

Watergirl said there were requests for budget menus…which I could do, just need some additional guidance from y’all on what exactly that would mean. I think it’s also important to discuss how to save money while shopping – I’ve developed quite a few tricks over the years.

This is an open thread, if you need me, I’ll be curled up under a blanket on the couch with three Great Danes and at least two of the three cats, binging on mindless movies

Remember to unplug from the drama to recharge and take care of you…

Remember, social media friends, sharing is caring… Mary Geddry, “Bunker Boy’s Ballroom”:

… Let’s do some arithmetic. The White House ballroom is supposed to be about 90,000 square feet. At $350 million, that’s $3,888 per square foot, a figure that belongs more to a hardened military installation than an architectural vanity project. For comparison, even the most decadent hotel ballroom in Washington runs about $1,000 per square foot. But nuclear-hardened command centers? They start at $3,000.

show full post on front page

And then there’s Mellon’s patriotic payday. Trump proudly announced that his “friend” had written a $130 million check “to the military” ostensibly to cover pay shortfalls during the shutdown. He didn’t say “to the ballroom,” or “to construction,” or “to the White House project.” He said to the military.

There are roughly 1.3 million active-duty service members. $130 million covers about six hours of payroll, not even enough to get through a single shift change. So, either Mellon wanted to buy everyone lunch, or the money was never really about paychecks.

That’s where the math and the paranoia intersect. The East Wing sat directly atop the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, the White House bunker. CBS quietly reported that the PEOC was being “upgraded” as part of the demolition work, with the White House Military Office overseeing the renovation. Combine those facts, and suddenly, the “ballroom” looks less like Versailles and more like camouflage for a subterranean rebuild…

Why the rush to rebuild the bunker now? It’s easy to say Trump’s terrified of protesters, Code Pink, “No Kings,” whatever haunts his sleepless nights. But the scale and secrecy of this project hint at something grander…

Architecturally, dictators love to dig. Hitler’s Reich Chancellery ballroom sat atop his bunker. Saddam Hussein’s palaces concealed tunnels. Putin’s dachas extend into the bedrock. It’s not just paranoia, it’s theology. The descent represents permanence, a belief that one can outlast history itself by going beneath it.

Trump’s “Golden Ballroom” may simply be another marble-and-gilt monument to ego. Or it could be the cover story for the most significant structural change to the White House since Truman, a subterranean expansion of executive power, both literal and symbolic.

If true, it’s the perfect metaphor for this era: America’s democracy being quietly hollowed out from below while the cameras linger on the chandelier above…

well, that's awkward

… After receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston on Sunday, Biden warned against what he called attacks on free speech and tests on the limits of executive power by President Donald Trump.

“Friends, I can’t sugar coat any of this. These are dark days,” the 82-year-old said, according to the Associated Press.

But, he said, America is “more powerful than any dictator.”…

“America is not a fairy tale,” Biden said Sunday. “For 250 years, it’s been a constant push and pull, an existential struggle between peril and possibility.”

Biden said he still believes in the promise of America. Though it may be easy to “check out,” he said, it is not time to give up.

“We are one of the only countries in the world that time and again has come out of every crisis we faced, stronger than we went into that crisis,” Biden said. “I still believe we will emerge, as we always have, stronger, wiser, more resilient, more just.”…

When Someone Else Says It Better Than You Can

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

I’m sure we all have our favorite sources for information and community, and for a lot of us, that is Balloon Juice.  And of course there’s no end to good substacks or newsletters, and a few good blogs are still left.  I like TPM and others as much as the next person, but there’s only one other blog besides Balloon Juice that I read regularly, and that’s The Establishment Bar.

I may have a special soft sport for them because their banner image looks a lot like the bar my parents owned and operated for my entire life, until my mom died.  It was a neighborhood bar and we lived upstairs, so I spent a lot of time there.

Anyway…

I have a busy day with out-of-town company coming this afternoon, so I am gonna mostly outsource this post to them this morning.

I have never been a fan of Bernie, but I have never been a rabid hater, and I don’t see red when his name is mentioned.  But it annoys the hell out of me that he uses the Democratic Party when it suits him, and he undermines the Democratic party when that suits him.

The best I can say about Bernie is that he supported Biden when Biden was president.  I’ll give him that.

When Misogyny, Racism, and Antisemitism Aren’t Deal Breakers for Your Revolution

Posted by T.LaFauci

“Sorry, I screwed up.”

As human beings, we often resist admitting when we’re wrong. It is a blow to our ego when we have to admit we may have made a mistake. Depending on the severity of the error, there can be repercussions, none of which are pleasant. Someone depending on us may lose confidence. It may impact our interactions with those close to us. It may take time to get back into one’s good graces. Needless to say, having to swallow our pride and apologize is one of the most difficult things that a person has to do in their everyday life.

But it has to be done.

[snip]

Bernie Sanders has no such virtue. And because of it, he cannot admit when he is wrong.

This past week showed us that, like Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders has such an inflated ego that he cannot admit when he has made an obvious error. When it came to light that his endorsed Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner had a Nazi tattoo, Sanders refused to withdraw his support, even though he has acknowledged Jewish heritage. When it later came out that Platner also had a history of racist and bigoted social media posts, Sanders remained in his corner. When Platner then began sending NDA’s to his campaign staff, Sanders remained resolutely by his side. By week’s end, there were very few original supporters of Graham Platner who stuck with someone who clearly wasn’t vetted before his Senate run. Bernie Sanders was one of those supporters.

Because to withdraw support would mean that Bernie Sanders would have to apologize. He would have to admit that he was wrong and that he made a poor decision in endorsing Graham Platner. He would have to swallow his pride and shift gears to announce his support for Janet Mills, somebody he initially refused to endorse. Admitting his mistake would require Bernie Sanders to have humility.

Instead, Bernie Sanders has doubled and tripled down.

[snip]

Sanders’ own attachment to Graham Platner was clear: he was an anti-establishment Democrat whom Sanders could closely ally himself with to finally have a like-minded colleague in the United States Senate. Since Sanders himself has tried and failed to run for president twice, all that is left is for his acolytes to succeed.

Which is why he can’t have Graham Platner fail, no matter what.

Maine is the best chance to flip a Senate seat from red to blue in 2026, and Bernie Sanders is committed to his chosen candidate. But in failing to vet Graham Planter, Bernie Sanders has again shown how problematic his “revolution” truly is. At its core, it is a movement based on angry White resentment from the left. Many are racist. Many are sexist. Many are antisemitic. Graham Platner is all three, and unsurprisingly, that combination is not a deal breaker for Bernie Sanders.

We should all be grateful for Graham Planter’s candidacy because it has shown that these Sanders-backed unvetted candidates are extremely problematic and would likely get crushed in a general election. Janet Mills has always been a stronger Maine senatorial candidate, and we’re fortunate that Platner is imploding now rather than 12 months from now.

And we’re fortunate that Bernie Sanders continues backing him, showing us once again how his “revolution” relies on the absolute worst that the Democratic Party has to offer.
