Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

So very ready.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

We still have time to mess this up!

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Cat Bleg – One-Year-Old Rocky in Indianapolis Needs a Home

by WaterGirl|  May 17, 20243:55 pm| 101 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Pet Blogging, Pet Rescue

Thursday Night Open Thread 9

From Indycat32:

This is Rocky. Just look at that face! He showed up at my house in February. I don’t know where he came from, but he was friendly and determined to come inside.

He is a very sweet boy and needs a forever home. In addition to being a handsome young kitty (about one year old per the vet), he is a very good boy.

While waiting for the vet he lay with his head on my arm and calmly watched the birds outside the window and purred so loudly during his exam she had trouble hearing his heartbeat.

He is vaccinated, neutered, Bravecto and Profender-treated, and the vet gave him a clean bill of health. He weighs 11 pounds, likes hugs, and gets along with the other outdoor cats. He spends a lot of time hanging around the back door, hoping I’ll relent and let him in, (or maybe waiting for food).

I live in Indianapolis but can travel. How can you say no to that face?!

After months of feeding this kitty, Indycat really cares about Rocky, but she cannot take him in.

Rocky sounds like a sweety, any takers?

Voting Access for All (VAAC) Zoom Follow-Up

This post is in: Balloon Juice Zooms, Open Threads, Political Fundraising, Targeted Political Fundraising 2023-24

** Can I just say that bleach blonde, bad built, butch body is a hard act to follow? **

I want to share a little bit about our zoom with VAAC.  (Voting Access for All)  If you want to learn more about VAAC, click on the targeted fundraising category under the post title, and it will bring up several posts that will tell you more about VAAC.

One of the BJ peeps at the zoom said I should include this video in every VAAC post, so here you go!

VAAC is all about voting access, but their work isn’t only about voting.

A few things that I learned at the zoom.

It’s a while different world out there if you’re poor and you’re black.  I mean, I knew that was true, but holy shit, it’s different hearing about it up close.

One person at the zoom had been sentenced to 25 years – as a teen – for stealing a purse from a white woman, after having gotten in some mild trouble before that.  To go through that and not come out bitter?  These are special people.   I have no words.

One person said that Danny was her brother – not literally, but figuratively, and she continues this work in his name, carrying his work forward.  She talked about “Danny’s Law” – legislation that folks at VAAC are pushing forward.

They are also working on a law that requires that young offenders have to be provided with an education while they are incarcerated.

Toward the end of the zoom, E.B. chimed in with one final comment.  (We first met E.B. at our zoom in 2022.)  She said she is grateful for our support – well, okay, many of the VAAC folks who were there said that – and then she talked about how other groups support them and it’s “one and done”.  Some groups donate once so they can get a tax write-off, and then they move on.

Though she didn’t say it in so many words, I was left with the impression that some other white liberal groups donate once so they can “check the box”, pat themselves on the back, and then move on.  E.B. seemed moved by the fact that we came back, that we are still here, that we are their partners in every sense of the word.  I was touched by that, and I know at least one of the other BJ peeps felt the same.

Putting in a plug for our fundraising.

We have $130 left on our current angel match, and then we have one more angel waiting in the wings.  These are 4x matches up to $100 per person, and the match will reset as soon as we finish the current match.

We are out of angels for the time being.  So now it’s just the single match from the external donor.

We are just  $3,955  $1,550 away from meeting our $25,000 goal, and I’m hoping we’ll get there this weekend.

Donate

Anyway, back to the zoom, those were my takeaways, what were yours?

Open Thread: Bad Built Butch Body

And if you don’t know what that means, well feel blessed, ,you didn’t open up twitter after a disastrous Nuggets game last night (I DO NOT want to talk about it, tyvm) to find MTG had her ass handed to her.

“I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading,” Greene said. An uproar ensued, with Committee chair James Comer (R-Ky.) calling for order, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) demanding the committee “take down” Greene’s words, essentially reprimanding her for insulting another lawmaker.

==========

Comer soon suspended the hearing for several minutes so lawmakers could confer with their parliamentary experts, and Greene agreed to “strike” her words, but she refused to apologize, and then she and Ocasio-Cortez resumed their back-and-forth.

==========

Eventually, after several more minutes of parliamentary arguing, the committee voted to allow Greene to finish her allotted speaking time. But Crockett wasn’t finished.

“I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling,” Crockett said. “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blonde, bad built, butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”

“What now?” Comer said.

 @JasmineForUS
So MTG wanted to talk about my appearance in COMMITTEE?! It’s against the rules to do… She refused to apologize! The chairman ruled that it was ok… AND I asked for clarification about what qualifies as “engaging in personalities” & basically wanted to know if I could talk shit about her appearance as… well… y’all know what she looks like, right? PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES! This is what happens when mentally deficient people who can’t read and follow rules or just don’t give a damn… somehow end up in CONGRESS!

Harris accepts debate invite to face off with Trump's VP pick, which may come at convention https://t.co/BvzUxVc44s

— The Associated Press (@AP) May 17, 2024

… Harris’ team told the network she would debate in-studio on Tuesday, July 23, or Tuesday, August 13, and encouraged the Trump campaign to agree to one of the dates for his eventual vice presidential pick. The Trump campaign didn’t immediately comment on the debate invite.

Trump, in an interview with TMJ4 taped from New York, said there was “a pretty good chance” he would announce his vice presidential pick at the GOP convention in Milwaukee, which begins on July 15, rather than before…

On The Road – Munira – Sunrise, Sunset

Munira

Sunrise, Sunset

When I was in the 7th grade, living in Amarillo, Texas, I watched my first sunrise. Or course, it wasn’t the first sunrise I’d seen, but it was the first one I really looked at. For some reason, I’d suddenly realized that I needed to see a sunrise from beginning to end so one spring day, I grabbed my sister, who was in the 4th grade, and we sneaked out of the house just when the sky began to lighten. There was an old shed in the back yard of the house we lived in. We were able to climb up on the roof from the fence, and we sat there, patiently waiting for the sun. The moment it broke the horizon was exhilarating. We knew we couldn’t look directly at it so we watched the colors of the clouds until they started to fade and the sun was fully risen. I wasn’t sure my sister would be able to sit still that long, but she did. As I recall, we didn’t say much to each other afterwards. We just quietly went back to the house and began our day.

I never forgot that experience. I knew we’d seen something both commonplace and magical. So what is the fascination with sunrises and sunsets besides the incredible colors? I think it comes from the fact that they are the perfect beautiful illustration of impermanence. We can see the changes happening. Every instant something shifts – the intensity of the color, the shape of the clouds, the reach of the glorious light until the first bright ray breaks the horizon at dawn or the last glow in the evening fades as the sun silently slips away. And the next day, it happens all over again.

This is a metaphor for our lives – the brightening, the shifting and the fading away. For some reason, at the age of 12, I had to witness it on that shed roof in Amarillo, Texas. I’ve seen many sunrises and sunsets since then, but that one stays with me. It was my initiation into a different way of seeing the world.

War for Ukraine Day 813: Vyshyvanka Day Under Bombardment

A quick housekeeping note: Rosie is still doing fine. Her next chemo session is this coming Monday. Ruby is back to her normal self. Thank you to everyone for your good thoughts, well wishes, and/or prayers for both of them. And thank you to everyone who has either already donated to Rosie’s GoFundMe or is considering doing so. It is greatly appreciated! I’m going to keep tonight’s update on the shorter side, again, as I’m still playing catch up for the excitement on Tuesday and Wednesday.

As I start drafting tonight’s update at 7:45 PM EDT, air raid alerts are starting to go up. Vinnytsia’s was up as I started writing and, as of 7:53 PM EDT, an air raid alert has been posted for Mykolaiv Oblast. It’s now 8:10 PM EDT and the air raid alerts are up from Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Mykolaiv, and Odesa Oblasts. The air raid alert for Kharkiv Oblast went up by 8:20 PM EDT. It is now 8:40 PM EDT and the alert for Zhytomyr Oblast has come down.

Kharkiv spent over 16 hours under air raid overnight into today.

After 16 hours and 33 minutes, the air alert is over in Kharkiv.

Right after the drone attack, russian forces are now hitting Kharkiv with missiles!!!

People in the Kharkiv metro are singing the anthem on Vyshyvanka Day today. These parades have been held for years, but this is the first one underground—a bold stand against the Russian advance, showing Kharkiv’s strength and resilience. Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦💪🏻 pic.twitter.com/8rM9LA1u8Z
