Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Petty moves from a petty man.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

The lights are all blinking red.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

How stupid are these people?

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Second rate reporter says what?

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Cold Cold Grey Dawn Open Thread: The NYTimes Is Determined to Estrange Its Best Customers

“Dems cleared the field”=Nobody ran against him bc
A. They knew they’d lose
B. They knew he already beat Trump & the odds were better of beating Trump w Biden then rolling the dice

This isn’t complicated, but people who don’t understand basic politics try to make it complicated https://t.co/79SY3MVJhH

— Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) May 14, 2024

I remember Astead Herndon as someone doing excellent reporting during the Black Lives Matter protests. Such good reporting, in fact, that the FTFNYTimes apparently hired him to be their Black Best Friend for the 2024 electoral cycle, where hate-clicks spend just like the honest ones…

The reason Biden won the primary is that he’s very popular with Democratic primary voters and all of his credible challengers decided to support his re-election, this isn’t that complicated

War for Ukraine Day 812: A Brief Wednesday Night Update

A painting by Ukrainian artist NEIVANMADE. The words "NEVER AGAIN" are repeated over and over, from left to right and top to bottom, in a faded, washed out black against a white background. Red, the color of blood, runs and drips down across 2/3rds of the painting. "WHILE YOU TOLERATE TYRANTS" is written/painted in the bottom white corner below the three rows of "NEVER AGAIN".

A brief housekeeping note. Rosie is still doing well recovering between chemo sessions. Her next one is next Monday. Ruby came home this morning. They had her temperature back to normal about three hours after they started pushing fluids and I headed home for the night. She’s drinking, can hold a squat, her temp is normal, but she’s a bit zonked out. For obvious reasons given what she went through yesterday. I want to thank everyone for the good thoughts, well wishes, and prayers. Both the ongoing ones for Rosie and the ones last night and today for Ruby.

By now you’ve seen this. I want to thank Cole and TaMara for doing this, as well as Watergirl who I’ve been informed helped out behind the scenes. I really appreciate it. And I want to thank everyone that has already donated or is considering donating.

Given the events of yesterday afternoon and evening, I’m going to keep tonight’s update shorter as I’m fried. Not as tired as Ruby, but tired nonetheless.

While I was drafting this update, air raid alerts went up over Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.

The Russians have (re)added Kherson to its target list.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Russian forces attacked 10 communities in Sumy Oblast on May 15, killing one civilian and injuring another, the Sumy Oblast Military Administration reported.

The communities of Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Esman, Shalyhyne, Druzhbivka, Seredyna-Buda, and Znob-Novhorodske were targeted.

The town of Esman and surrounding areas were attacked with mortars, multiple launch rocket systems, and artillery. One woman was killed in the shelling, according to regional authorities. In the Druzhbivka community, one civilian was injured in the shelling. No details were provided on the extent of the victims’ injuries.

Throughout the day, Russia assailed the border communities with mortar, artillery, rocket launcher, and drone attacks. The community of nova Sloboda saw six mines dropped over the past 24 hours.

In total,183 explosions were recorded in 37 separate attacks on the region.

Sumy Oblast borders Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod oblasts.  Russian strikes against Sumy Oblast have become increasingly destructive in recent months. Amid intensified attacks, Ukrainian authorities ordered increased evacuations from the region.

Open Thread: Let’s Help Adam and Rosie

John was going to do a post on this tonight, but turns out he’s without power, so it falls to me.

Open Thread: Let's Help Adam and Rosie 1

Some of you already know that Adam Silverman’s pup, Rosie, has developed lymphoma and is currently in treatment. Her chemo is going okay, with some pretty scary side effects that landed her in the emergency room for an overnight visit, as well as pushing her third treatment back at least a week. BUT, the good news is, her lymph nodes have returned to normal size with only a few treatments. So her prognosis is good.

Pet portrait of my black Lab mix Rosie. The bottom picture is a of a grinning 3 month old black Lab mix, her ears up with the tips flopped over, and her tongue partially sticking out. The upper picture is of an adult Rosie. Her red collar is visible, as is her front left paw. She has her ears pricked up with the tips flopped over. Her eyes are brown.

Barring further complications, she’s due for a total of 16 (!) very expensive treatments over the next few months. After conferring with the Blogfather, it was decided a fundraiser would be very helpful in defraying the costs.

As always, donate if you can. No obligations. Kind, supportive words in the comments are always welcome.

We did have a bit of a hiccup after I set things up and pulled it to ensure everything worked and I restarted it today.

Open Thread: The House Will Investigate Trump’s Oil Barons

Open Thread: Investigating Trump's Oil Barons

(Ann Telnase via the Washington Post)

House Democrats are investigating Trump’s meeting with oil executives where he asked them to steer $1 billion to his 2024 campaign and promised to reverse dozens of President Biden’s environmental policies.

That's good news. https://t.co/vian7n3rl4

— Citizens for Ethics (@CREWcrew) May 14, 2024

Per the Washington Post, “House Democrats launch probe of Trump’s dinner with oil executives”:

… The probe comes after The Washington Post on Thursday first reported the fundraising dinner, where Trump said that giving $1 billion would be a “deal” because of the taxation and regulation the oil companies would avoid thanks to him, according to people with knowledge of the meeting, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private conversation.

In letters sent Monday evening, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee asked nine oil executives to provide detailed information on their companies’ participation in the meeting. The Democrats voiced concern that Trump’s request at the dinner may have been a quid pro quo and may have violated campaign finance laws, although experts say his conduct probably did not cross the threshold of being illegal.

Lawmakers sent the letters to the CEOs of Cheniere Energy, Chesapeake Energy, Chevron, Continental Resources, EQT Corporation, ExxonMobil, Occidental Petroleum and Venture Global. They also fired off a missive to the head of the American Petroleum Institute, the oil industry’s top lobbying arm in Washington.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, asked the executives to provide the names and titles of any company representatives who attended the Mar-a-Lago dinner, copies of any materials shared with the attendees, a description of any policy proposals discussed at the event, and a list of any contributions to the Trump campaign made during or after the event.

Congrats to Sage the Poodle!

by Betty Cracker|  May 15, 202410:59 am| 74 Comments

After last night’s disappointing baseball game, I watched the finale of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show while Bill and our own two dogs snoozed. As soon as I saw Sage, a miniature poodle from Houston, prancing around the ring, I figured she’d take home the top prize:

As many a grifty preacher has demonstrated, a fancy haircut and charisma can be an unstoppable combination! In a sense, it doesn’t seem fair for other dogs to have to compete against poodles, who seem to have the most elaborate coiffure options in addition to their formidable smarts.

Last night’s outcome is also a feel-good story from the handler’s perspective. Kaz Hosaka has competed for decades and went out a winner in his final show — all thanks to Sage! That very good girl received melon and chicken plates as treats after collecting her ribbons.
