Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Alexa, change the president.”

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

So many bastards, so little time.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

He really is that stupid.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Dank Grey Dawn Open Thread: Libertarians vs. Repubs, America’s Saddest Street Gangs

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. challenges Donald Trump to debate at Libertarian Convention https://t.co/ed3jqhpvEe

— The Associated Press (@AP) May 8, 2024

Per the Associated Press:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has challenged Donald Trump to a head-to-head debate for when both address a Libertarian convention later this month, a move that comes as the presumptive GOP nominee has ramped up both criticism of Kennedy’s independent bid and demands that President Joe Biden meet him on a debate stage.

Arguing that he is “drawing a lot of voters from your former supporters,” Kennedy said to Trump in an open letter posted Tuesday to X that the Libertarian convention provides “perfect neutral territory for you and me to have a debate where you can defend your record for your wavering supporters.”

Trump has been bullish in calling on Biden to debate him ahead of the November general election but has shied away from other rivals’ previous debate entreaties. Trump skipped the 2024 GOP primary debates, saying it was unnecessary because voters know him and his record.

Kennedy, who last year challenged Biden for the Democratic nomination before launching an independent bid, has argued that his relatively strong showing in a few national polls gives his candidacy heft. Polls during the 2016 presidential campaign regularly put libertarian Gary Johnson’s support in the high single or low double digits, but he ultimately received only about 3% of the vote nationwide…

It got dumber.

Painting by NEIVANMADE. It has a white background an in the center are Soldiers in green doing air defense by firing at incoming Russian missiles in the upper right. The missiles are red and yellow. In the upper left, written in green, is the text: "SAVE THE BRAVEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!" Below the Soldiers, also written in green, is "SUPPORT FOR KHARKIV"

Not much new to report with Rosie. She’s still tolerating her third dose of chemo well. She goes for her fourth treatment on Monday. Tomorrow, I’m going to (try to) train her on the ramp I bought to help her get on and off the bed. Thoughts and/or prayers appreciated.

Russia is still hammering parts of Kharkiv and Sumy Oblasts:

⚡Kharkiv governor: Heavy fighting ongoing but no threat of ground invasion of city.

Oleh Syniehubov said the situation was "fully controlled." Syniehubov claimed fighting was ongoing in four of the five villages claimed by Moscow – Strilecha, Pylna, Borysivka, and Ohirtseve.

As I write this post, russian troops are attacking Kharkiv Oblast with missiles and glide bombs. Each day of delay costs human lives. @Bundeskanzler, take this step and #FreeTheTaurus! pic.twitter.com/7KPTSQOXdR

“You lie down and think — whether they will kill you now, or in an hour, or in three," said Ukrainian Eastern border town Vovchansk resident Valentyna Hrevnova, 75.

A missile attack against the outskirts of the northeastern city of Sumy killed a woman aged around 37 earlier in the day, the regional military administration reported.

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) May 11, 2024

The Kyiv Independent has the details:

Russian forces struck 10 communities in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy Oblast in 21 separate attacks throughout the day, the regional administration reported on May 11. At least 93 explosions were reported in Sumy Oblast over the past 24 hours.

A missile attack against the outskirts of the northeastern city of Sumy killed a woman aged around 37 earlier in the day, the regional military administration reported. The strike was aimed against local infrastructure, officials said without providing further details on the target or the consequences.

Apart from the regional capital, the communities of Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, and Seredyna-Buda were targeted.

Throughout the day, Russia assailed the border communities with mortar, artillery, and drone attacks. At least two communities saw mines dropped onto their territories on May 11.

Local authorities didn’t provide any information on the damage to civilian property.

Sumy Oblast borders Russia’s Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod oblasts. Russian attacks against the region have become increasingly destructive in recent months, killing and injuring civilians.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Saturday Night Open Thread

Another absolutely foul rainy day today, which is to be expected, because any time there is any sort of lunar or solar event, it rains. Period. I bet I actually see one out of every 10 full moons. It was cold, too, with the temps going down to around 48 degrees at one point.

In other news, my front porch has five bird nests- four in the ferns, and one up at the top of a column, and today I noticed that the little babies had their heads out of the nest wailing for food. There are at least two, but only one posed for me:

No luck on the job front, but I only looked for an hour or so. There really is nothing unless you want to work fast food for 9 bucks an hour. No wonder people are fleeing the state. I’m tired and burnt out, so that’s it for me. Have a good one.

Saturday Evening Open Thread: RFKlown Jr Show 3

National treasure Alexandra Petri, at the Washington Post — “I’m the worm that ate part of RFK Jr.’s brain, and I’m asking for your vote”: [gift link]

Good afternoon, fellow Americans, from the interior of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s brain. I am a parasitic worm. You might be wondering how I got here, or perhaps not! Most people who learned that a piece of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s brain was missing because a worm ate it responded with what I would characterize as “disappointment but not exactly surprise.”

Maybe you heard about me from the New York Times. Or possibly you got the news directly from the Kennedy campaign announcing that the worm that ate part of the candidate’s brain and then died in there would not affect his ability to serve as president. You know what they say: no such thing as bad publicity! Indeed, RFK Jr. has gone so far as to offer to eat five more brain worms. This is not the first time one of his statements have given me pause…

I know I promised to post the “favorite dogs & cats” photos you guys sent a couple of weeks ago.  I feel like crap, so it won’t be today, but I have them saved and will put them up soon.

On the plus side, I am catching up on TV, which is good because my Tivo is 94% full.

It is a legitimately great thing that we got Shawn Fain and Scranton Joe at the same time, if we get a second Biden term and anything resembling a legislative majority I think we can get some durable progress on labor issues https://t.co/H2Ggjp5spr

Eric Robert Stolz w/Laborers 113 wanted to see Biden in Racine after hearing criticism over how the president struggled to walk & talk. In person, Stolz saw no issues.
