Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

In after Baud. Damn.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

We will not go back.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Petty moves from a petty man.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Editing help needed

by David Anderson|  May 7, 20243:53 pm| 21 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I know several people have reached out to me in the past offering editing services.  I will need some help in the next several weeks to edit several manuscripts into coherence but I don’t remember who offered.  If you’re available, could you indicate that in comments?

Thanks!

Good morning from New York.

It’s a sunny and temperate morning outside the lower Manhattan courthouse for Trump’s criminal trial, but reportedly, we’re in for a Stormy day in court, Daniels’ attorney told the AP.

Follow along here. 🧵

On The Road – lashonharangue – Mayan Ruins and the Sacred Monkey River [1 of 4]

lashonharangue

I recently took a guided tour in Chiapas Mexico to visit Mayan ruins and raft down the Rio Usumacinta (known to the Mayans as the Sacred Monkey river). The first two days we traveled overland from the city of Palenque to visit archaeological sites. After that we got on the water and visited two more sites and went through occasional whitewater.

Palenque

Palenque was the largest and most fully excavated of the various sites we saw on this trip. However, it is estimated that less than 10% of the site had been exposed and researched. Most structures are still buried in the surrounding jungle.

This is the palace and observatory. The tower is not in the process of settling like a certain tower in Italy. It was built at that angle to align it with a specific astronomical event. Our guide told us that other sites have similar structure but with different amounts of lean depending on their location.

War for Ukraine Day 804: Slow News Day, Huh?

by Adam L Silverman|  May 6, 20247:55 pm| 40 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Quick housekeeping note: It’s been a long day and most of the news, which has nothing to do with Ukraine, has been bad and it is going to get worse. So tonight’s update is going to be on the shorter side.

Today is Yom HaShoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day. This is different than the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is in January on the date of the beginning of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Yom HaShoa is the week after the 7th day of Passover. Given what is happening in Israel and Gaza, this year’s Yom HaShoa is especially tragic and another example that far too many have learned the wrong lessons from the Holocaust and its aftermath.

There is a bit of good news. Rosie went to her oncology appointment today. The oncology vet did a pre-treatment exam, was pleased enough with her progress since she saw her last week to go ahead and do the chemo treatment today. The oncologist says she’s at 80% remission after two treatments and three weeks of the accompanying prednisone. To try to avoid the really bad side effects, Rosie got a low dose of today’s chemo. As I’ve written the oncology vet is treating Rosie as much as she’s treating the lymphoma.

The butcher’s bill from Russia’s Orthodox Easter attack on Kharkiv.

Russia targeted Monachynivka village near Kupyansk with a deadly 1.5-ton aerial bomb, leveling the whole street. It's the first time such weapons were used. Elderly woman killed. FAB was equipped with a gliding module allowing it to maneuver post-launch.@serhii_bolvinov pic.twitter.com/lqkQCtb9u5

Only yesterday, the once tranquil residence of an 88-year-old woman in the Kupiansk district of Kharkiv Oblast was reduced to ruins when russian troops dropped an air bomb. The house was destroyed, burying the woman beneath its rubble. pic.twitter.com/LSYTXT9dyT

And from Sumy Oblast:

⚡️ Russian troops shelled the village of Uhroidy in Sumy Oblast on May 6, injuring three people, including two children, Suspilne reported, citing Iryna Yukhta, a secretary of the Krasnopillia village council.

Open Thread: May Is Missing & Murdered Indigenous People Month

by Anne Laurie|  May 6, 20244:05 pm| 50 Comments

This post is in: Justice, Proud to Be A Democrat

Let's come together this May to honor and remember the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP). Their stories deserve to be heard, their memories kept alive. 💔 #MMIPAwarenessMonth pic.twitter.com/9FfQrBZXRv

— Urban Restoration Counseling Center (@URCCSanDiego) May 6, 2024

Red Dress Day was last week, but I figure better late than never to highlight this important issue…

The crisis of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Peoples has impacted every Indigenous person I know. I'm deeply proud of our efforts across the Biden-Harris administration to help address this violence. At @Interior, we're making historic strides toward tackling this painful legacy.

— Secretary Deb Haaland (@SecDebHaaland) May 5, 2024

As US spotlights those missing or dead in Native communities, prosecutors work to solve their cases https://t.co/s4GWNBsmCj

— The Associated Press (@AP) May 5, 2024

… As people gathered around the nation on Sunday to spotlight the troubling number of disappearances and killings in Indian Country, authorities say the New Mexico case represents the kind of work the U.S. Department of Justice had aspired to when establishing its Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons outreach program last summer.

Special teams of assistant U.S. attorneys and coordinators have been tasked with focusing on MMIP cases. Their goal: Improve communication and coordination across federal, tribal, state and local jurisdictions in hopes of bridging the gaps that have made solving violent crimes in Indian Country a generational challenge.

Some of the new federal prosecutors were participating in MMIP Awareness Day events. From the Arizona state capitol to a cultural center in Albuquerque and the Qualla Boundary in North Carolina, marches, symposiums, art exhibitions and candlelight vigils were planned for May 5, which is the birthday of Hanna Harris, who was only 21 when she was killed on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Montana in 2013…
