Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

It’s possible to be a liberal firebrand without crapping on the party.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Republicans do not trust women.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Every Time They Try to Drag Him Down, He Comes Back Stronger Open Thread

Will these corrupt Republicans in Tennessee ever learn?

Tonight, after a 3 hour hearing, Republicans FAILED to kick me off the ballot.

This is yet another attempt at political harassment after failing to silence, censure, intimidate, and expel our movement.

But today the people of District 52 showed up and the truth prevailed! ✊🏾💛 pic.twitter.com/NGm6goRgHB

— Rep. Justin Jones (@brotherjones_) May 3, 2024

It seems to me that Tennessee Republicans are working overtime to forge a very strong leader in Justin Jones.  They are just so hell bent on white superiority that they can’t see what’s right in front of them.

Self-reflection isn’t exactly their strong suit.   I do wonder sometimes if the Republicans – who were hell bent on making sure that that nice Elizabeth Warren lady didn’t get to run the organization that was her brainchild – ever stopped to consider that maybe that didn’t turn out so well for them.

Hey night shift peeps, not sure if you saw the afternoon post earlier this week.  There were tons of posts that day, so this wasn’t on the front page by nighttime.  You guys get a brand-new Balloon Juice angel match of $1,000.

It’s Up To Us Now, Next Up: Michigan!

We are raising funds for Voting Access for All (VAAC) in Michigan.

VAAC found an external match for our $25,000 goal, and we have a Balloon Juice angel match, so donations up to $50 are 4x your donation amount.

What are we funding?  Just like last time, we are paying for teams who are doing direct work with the formerly incarcerated, not just to let them know they are eligible to vote, not just to get them registered to vote, but also to get them out to vote.

Lots more detail about what VAAC is up to are included in the post that’s linked above.

Donate

To count toward the match, let us know about your donation in the comments, or you can drop me an email message if you prefer.

Saturday Night Open Thread

First off, what a difference a few years make:

Saturday Night Open Thread 10

And today:

Saturday Night Open Thread 11

I love how big they are getting.

***

It’s going to be a long, divisive, turbulent summer, because the Trump campaign has figured out they are never going to win Gen Z and younger voters, so are going all in on voter suppression. So it’s gonna be non stop culture war and all in on college radicals from here on out. And because it is summer and this seems to happen every summer, they will go all in on fomenting racism.

I’m still a little under the weather and almost done with all my spring semester stuff, so I have that going for me. Currently rewatching Burn Notice on Hulu, and man it makes me sad thinking about all the great shows on USA during their Blue Sky era. Suits, White Collar, Psych, Monk, Burn Notice, on and on and on. And they pissed it all away.

War for Ukraine Day 802: A Brief Saturday Night Update

Just a brief housekeeping note: Rosie is continuing to improve. She’s putting weight back on, much more active, just marked improvement. She goes for her next oncology appointment on Monday and once the oncology vet does her exam and runs her bloodwork, we’ll find out how they decide to adjust her course of treatment. The protocol is sixteen treatments spread over 25 weeks. We’re now at spread over 26 weeks. The good news is that the oncology vet is excellent and is treating Rosie as much as she’s treating the lymphoma. I appreciate all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, etc. Thank you all very much. As you can imagine, I’m exhausted. The past two weeks have been draining and nerve racking. I spent most of today asleep. I’m not sure if I’ve been asleep longer than awake you can call them naps, but I’ve had two! I am very sorry that I have been cross, short, cranky, out of sorts, and a general pain in the ass in the comments and replies. You guys are all good as far as I’m concerned. I appreciate you keeping my on my toes and sharpening my thinking. And I probably don’t say that enough because quite often over the past nine years something important started on the front page and by having to think through your replies, it was a far better product once I actually had to account for your pushback. Once I hit publish tonight I’m going offline and expect I’ll be asleep by 8 PM.

As day turned into night, as Saturday because (Orthodox) Easter Sunday in Ukraine, the Russians opened up on large portions of Ukraine. All in the name, I’m sure, of Putin protecting white Christendom.

As I type this, at 5:35 PM EDT, all of eastern and southeastern Ukraine are under air raid alert. From Russian occupied Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts to Mykolaiv Oblast.

Squishable Afternoon Open Thread: What’s Up?

What’s everyone doing this afternoon? I’m waiting for the Nuggets game after spending the morning weeding (and writing posts here, LOL).

What’s pissing you off the most these days? Me it’s the media – between trying to recreate 1968 with their campus protest coverage and the general idiocy when covering Trump…I avoided most of it all week.

Weekends are for catching up on Welcome to Wrexham and anything else hanging out in my DVR.

Climate Solutions: Beavers Doing Beaver Things

by TaMara|  May 4, 20242:49 pm| 35 Comments

This post is in: Climate Change, Climate Change Solutions, Positive Climate News

Okay, there are a lot of beaver videos here. Some general information, but most are how ordinary folks are changing their habits to rewild their land. I find that the most encouraging.  Gnaw away at this post as you have time.

Climate Solutions: Carbon Cowboys and Regenerative Farming

This guy has a great intro into all things Beaver and Climate:

Nov 30, 2022
Beavers are dam-building, furry little cuties but did you also know that these adorable rodents can help protect landscapes from wildfires and drought and fight climate change?

==========

Jul 17, 2023
When beavers build dams, the changes they make to their habitat can improve everything from biodiversity to drought resilience. Researchers at Boise State University and Utah State University, in collaboration with NASA’s Applied Sciences Ecological Conservation program area, are adding remote sensing data to a suite of tools to measure what happens when beaver are reintroduced to an area. For people managing water resources and conservation efforts, predicting which streams can support beavers and monitoring how water and vegetation change once they return is critical. Using satellite data makes it possible to monitor large areas and track changes over time. Researchers Become “Beaver Believers”

After Measuring the Impacts of RewildingAries C. Keck

JUL 17, 2023

Researchers are using NASA Earth observations to monitor impacts of beaver restoration on water availability in drought-prone ecosystems.

Ecologists and ranchers alike know that rivers and streams with healthy beaver populations support more biodiversity, are more drought resilient, and keep water available on the land for more days of the year. But witnessing the impact of nature’s engineers on a single stream is easier than measuring it across a region, or choosing which of a hundred streams is an ideal site to reintroduce beavers.

Now a NASA-supported effort in Idaho adds remote sensing data to the suite of tools used to predict which streams can support beavers and to monitor how water and vegetation change once they return. Read more here

Beavers can be a nuisance — but they might also offer some real climate benefits. David Haakenson thinks about water a lot. That’s because the farm he owns in western Washington experiences frequent, catastrophic floods. And climate change is making that trend worse. “We had floods in October. We had floods in November, December, January, February, and March,” said Haakenson, the owner of Jubilee Farm. “There’s this kind of anxiety that involves — like, when you look out on the field and say, ‘Wow, I make my living off that field and now it’s a lake.’” To protect Jubilee Farm, Haakenson is looking to an unlikely ally: Beavers. Because it turns out, beavers might actually offer some real protection against climate impacts like flooding and wildfires — if people can learn to live with them.

A Little Saturday Good News: Flamingoes, Bunnies and Fat Cats

I know I don’t do these often enough anymore, but I thought we could all use some respite for the weekend.  Here are good people doing good things…

Flight attendant Amber May’s quick thinking saved six rare Chilean flamingo eggs after their incubator broke on the plane. David Muir has more on what happened to those eggs, and the special visit a few weeks later.

I love this entire project and the woman who runs it.
