Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We will not go back.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

He really is that stupid.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

“But what about the lurkers?”

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Do Say “Loser” (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  March 16, 202412:20 pm| 144 Comments

This post is in: 2024 Primaries, LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Remember epic loser Ron DeSantis? It wouldn’t be surprising if non-Floridians already forgot the forgettable face-planter who set $160M aflame only to come in a very distant second in the Iowa caucuses.

But those of us who have to share a peninsula with the failed pretender to the MAGA moron throne get frequent reminders of his existence as he grasps for ongoing relevance. As reported in this space, formerly obsequious statehouse minions are already giving Ron the “new phone who dis?” treatment.

To remove the sting, DeSantis is trying in vain to spin his losses into wins. Here’s an editorial from the Tampa Bay Times that notes a wipeout in a recent settlement over Ron’s signature “Don’t Say Gay” law:

OK to say ‘gay.’ The DeSantis administration wasted no time this week spinning a settlement over Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act — also known as the Don’t Say Gay law — as some kind of victory for state-sponsored bigotry. The agreement between the state and parents, teachers and advocates who challenged the 2022 statute keeps the law in place. But it clarifies that the restrictions on classroom instruction about gender identity and sexual orientation were not sweeping bans on discussions about LGBTQ+ issues in the schools. By removing that uncertainty, the settlement defangs a key component of the Don’t Say Gay law. By leaving the restrictions purposely vague, lawmakers all but invited parents and school districts to overreact. The result was a chilling effect that caused teachers to clam up, administrators to remove books with LGBTQ+ content and school districts to pull their support for anti-bullying and other programs. As part of the deal, the Florida Department of Education will send a memo to all Florida school districts explaining that the law is not as restrictive as some schools have interpreted. We’ll withhold judgment until we see that letter; the Education Department has sent out rotten guidance lately. But this is a huge step in the right direction toward restoring some fundamental human dignity.

Emphasis mine since “purposely vague” is the key here – it’s a tactic adopted by hard-right totalitarians everywhere to intimidate opponents, and it works. For two solid years, this crappy law created chaos in Florida schools. The settlement intends to rob it of its power by introducing clarity.

DeSantis and allies like the Moms for Liberty degenerates will keep lying about the outcome, but make no mistake: This settlement is a huge win for groups like Equality Florida, which demonstrated that with perseverance, it is possible to claw back rights, even in a state run by corrupt Republican authoritarians.

That’s worth celebrating!

Goal:  40,000 for Worker Power

Why:  to fund a boots-on-the ground voter registration team for three weeks.

Why District 2 and District 4?  In a word: micro-targeting!

  • 11 electoral votes to keep Biden as president
  • replace Sinema with Ruben Gallego to hold the Senate seat
  • flip one seat in the U.S. House to beat the vulnerable Republican who barely beat Jevin Hodge
  • pick up two AZ House seats  (Republicans hold the AZ House by 2 seats)
  • pick up one AZ Senate seat  (Republicans hold the AZ Senate by 2 seats)
  • get rid of the charter-school-loving election denier who chose Clarence Thomas as her son’s godfather
  • as a bonus, creepy crazy Kari Lake loses again!

As you can see above, this time it’s personal!

Click below for full details in the post from earlier this week.

For Entertainment Purposes Only: Arrant Rodgers

by Anne Laurie|  March 16, 20243:55 am| 59 Comments

Aaron Rodgers loves attention. But he probably wouldn’t enjoy the level of scrutiny involved in being RFK Jr.’s vice-presidential pick, Will Leitch writes. https://t.co/NZFG3Fd2Jd

— New York Magazine (@NYMag) March 13, 2024

Some people have a gift for making themselves loved wherever they go. Others, not so much… Will Leich, (excellent) professional sports reporter, for NYMag — “Aaron Rodgers Would Probably Regret Getting Into Politics”:

Every once in a while, you read a line in a news story that is so plainly self-evident, so thuddingly obvious, that it takes you aback — as if you turned on the evening news to see that the lead story is “Water Remains Wet.” The New York Times’ scoop Tuesday night that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had reached out to Aaron Rodgers about the possibility of being his vice-presidential candidate included one of those lines. According to the Times, Rodgers has “welcomed the overtures.” In the words of a great philosopher, No shit, Sherlock.

If there’s one thing that Aaron Rodgers has consistently done over the past four years of his stoned-guy-in-the-dorm-you’ve-learned-to-avoid red-pilled COVID era, it’s “welcomed the overtures,” even if many of those overtures have come from within his own brain. As his football career has flattened out (he was mediocre for a losing team in 2022 and threw exactly one pass for the Jets in 2023 before going down with an Achilles injury), Rodgers has filled his time by trying to drag himself back into the spotlight, mostly in outlandish fashion. He has accused Jimmy Kimmel of having ties to Jeffrey Epstein; insisted that Joe Biden didn’t really win the election; claimed the Epstein case was really just a distraction from UFOs; derisively called Travis Kelce “Mr. Pfizer” because Kelce supports the COVID vaccines; and pretended he was going to return to football last year even though there was never a chance he actually would. That last one was the big tell. Thanks to Kelce’s megawatt relationship with Taylor Swift, the public was talking about a football player not named Aaron Rodgers, and that hurt. The man will listen to every overture you’ve got…

But one suspects that Rodgers, if he does sign on for the ticket, may regret it. He has spent the past 20 years in the comforting embrace of sports media, which proved willing to forgive his constant lies and manipulation, as well as gloss over his increasingly insane beliefs, as long as he produced on the field. This obviously would not be the case in politics. If Rodgers ends up as a veep candidate, he’s likely to learn that the media scrutiny that comes with a political campaign dwarfs anything he has ever faced in the athletic arena. His controversies didn’t start with vaccine denialism; now, they could be reopened and reinvestigated by a political press that will feel no fealty to or reverence for him and his football career. Rodgers might think he’d be getting a clean slate in the political realm, but he would be very wrong…

However, people will be looking at him, and that — more than, say, a win in the NFC Championship game (he has lost four in a row) — is what it’s clear Rodgers wants more than anything. And you have to give him this: If Kennedy picks him to be his running mate, he’d be the most qualified person on the ticket. Rodgers was, after all, once good at something.

Painting by NEIVANMADE. It has a black border. There are grey buildings with black windows along the left side. The center is a yellowy-grey, perhaps Ukrainian wheat fields. There is a black shadow figure striding through it. The figure's legs and feet are all that is visible of it. On the right side are red Zs, which symbolize Putin's/Russia's "Z" war/special military operation in Ukraine. The sky above the buildings is light grey. "GENOCIDE IS GOING BUT WHO EVEN CARES?" is painted in black in the upper left hand corner.

Fanni Davis did nothing fucking wrong. Her “crime” is being a black woman with a sex life. That’s it. I’ve had people say bullshit like “she should have known” and that’s just nonsense on stilts. There is no conflict of interest. And this never would have happened to a white man. Ever. And definitely not a Republican. Jesus christ if it were a Republican the most shocking thing about it would be if it were consensual.

And it should have never been an issue, but our system is so fucked up because it was designed to operate in a world where people acted in good faith. But Trump and the Republicans don’t do that, so much like every other institution this nation relies on, Republicans have corrupted it an co-opted it. Fucking hell, some bullshit organization is giving the Ruth Bader Ginsburg award to Elon fucking Musk and Rupert Murdoch whose name I can’t even remember. The nation is broken and there are no guard rails. And it wasn’t by accident, it was intentional and by design by people like newly minted Ruth Bader Ginsburg award winners Mush and Murdoch and all their billionaire friends.

Joelle safely made it to Minnesota for the funeral, so it’s just me and three dogs and two cats at Camp Cole. Spent the day doing laundry so I could pack all my stuff I am taking with me and so Joelle would not come home on Sunday to a bunch of dirty laundry. I tell you what, folding someone else’s laundry is amusing. All her clothes look like little kids clothing. It’s so small I can’t even fold half of it very well.

And before 100 of you ask, yes, I know how to do laundry and separate colors and fabrics and use the right settings on the washing machine. I was a lifelong bachelor, not a moron. Actually, I’m a moron, but I do know how to do laundry correctly.

It rained all day and was unseasonably cold, so that kinda killed my plans to do stuff outside and to work on the car. Can’t really go to the car wash and clean the car in a downpour, can you. I mean you can, but I didn’t.

I really don’t have anything else. House does feel empty, though.

I was hospitalized for several days recently, and the experience was exactly like an alien abduction-themed horror movie. Don’t look at me like I’m crazy for saying that, the way my husband did. It really, really was!

It’s true that I entered the facility of my own free will (and was not plucked off the surface of the planet via tractor beam), albeit under duress due to a weakened state. But after that, things spiraled completely out of my control, and I was a specimen in my captors’ hands.

The next thing I knew, I was lying in a darkened room, tethered to beeping, whirring machines, and clad in an absurd smock that was apparently designed to expose the wearer’s ass unless awkwardly held closed with both hands. What in the wide world of FUCK?

And if I managed to lapse into sleep despite the terrors of my captivity, masked creatures would swoop into my cubicle to stab me with needles and/or bundle me off for scans or probes. It was horrifying. HORRIFYING! I don’t want to talk about it.

***

I read the NYT pretty much cover to cover every day during my…sabbatical. I know, the NYT, but the app was right there on my phone, and there was no streaming TV on the alien vessel, only cable. I could only watch so many back-to-back episodes of “Guy’s Grocery Games” on Food Network without completely losing my mind. Feh!

Anyhoo, the fucking NYT and its abysmal opinion page — I was immersed in it, which is worse than infinite grocery games, to be honest. Weirdly, Friedman is making more sense than he has in two decades or so? That was surprising.
