Cancel Culture in Miami Beach

by Betty Cracker|  March 13, 202512:59 pm| 91 Comments

This post is in: Movies, Open Threads, Politics

The mayor of Miami Beach wants to terminate a lease and end funding for an independent theater that’s screening this year’s best feature documentary Oscar winner, No Other Land. The Miami Herald:

Last week, in a letter to O Cinema CEO Vivian Marthell, [Miami Beach Mayor Steven] Meiner urged the theater to cancel scheduled screenings of the film, citing critiques from Israeli and German government officials. According to Meiner’s newsletter, Marthell initially responded that the theater would not show the film. “Due to the concerns of antisemitic rhetoric, we have decided to withdraw the film from our programming,” Marthell wrote in a letter to Meiner on March 6. “This film has exposed a rift which makes us unable to do the thing we’ve always sought out to do which is to foster thoughtful conversations about cinematic works.”

The next day, however, the O Cinema CEO reversed course. Marthell confirmed to the Miami Herald on Friday that the film would continue with its scheduled screenings. After receiving media attention for the film controversy, the theater sold out screenings and added two more dates later in March. “But let me be clear: our decision to screen NO OTHER LAND is not a declaration of political alignment. It is, however, a bold reaffirmation of our fundamental belief that every voice deserves to be heard, even, and perhaps especially, when it challenges us,” Marthell said in an email to the Herald late last week.

Well, not in Miami Beach. According to the article, city commissioners share the mayor’s view of the film.

“A religious Jew was voted as Mayor, along with a Zionist city council. Unlike other cities, we have zero tolerance for pro Hamas/ terrorist propaganda,” [Miami Beach City Commissioner David] Suarez wrote in a text message to the Herald. “The City of Miami Beach will continue to stand up for our Jewish population, home to holocaust survivors, and while most people use ‘Never Again’ as a platitude, we mean it.”

At least one of the commissioners, Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, agrees in principle but believes canceling the theater’s lease and funding would subject the city to lawsuits that she suspects it would lose.

The Herald notes the two directors who accepted the Oscar for No Other Land are Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham. From the speech:

“We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together our voices are stronger,” Abraham said from the Oscars stage. “We see each other in the atrocious destruction of Gaza and its people, which must end, in the Israeli hostages brutally taken in the crime of October 7, which must be freed. When I look at Basel, I see my brother, but we are unequal.”

I haven’t seen No Other Land. The only Oscar nominated film I’ve seen so far this year was Conclave. I am not now and never have been a Catholic, but for some reason, I find movies and TV shows about Vatican intrigue fascinating. (The Young Pope and The New Pope on Max are both excellent!)

I wondered briefly what would happen if Catholic officials tried to punish a publicly subsidized theater for screening Conclave since it portrays the Catholic Church in a less-than-flattering light. Then I remembered reading about something similar that used to happen a lot in Massachusetts decades ago, only the targets were books, magazines, plays, songs, etc., that were considered lewd or otherwise offensive.

It was a cultural phenomenon known as “Banned in Boston,” and it didn’t go quite the way city officials hoped. The Warren Court had to sort that bunch out. I don’t know if the Roberts Court is up to the task.

Thursday Morning (the 13th) Open Thread: Blood Moon Rising

The Blood Moon, a total lunar eclipse happens this week.
We will be treated to over one hour of the moon turning RED.
The totality of the lunar eclipse will begin around 1:26 AM & end around 2:31 AM CDT early Friday morning & overall the eclipse will occur between 10:57 PM Thursday & 5 AM CDT Friday

— Susan DuBose (@houseofbast777.bsky.social) March 10, 2025 at 7:17 AM

The “Blood Moon” is, of course, a totally predictable and not-all-that-uncommon astrophysical occurrence, and it would be silly to assign a larger sociopolitical meaning to this or any other such event. But we’re pattern-making animals, so it’s kinda fun!

Next Friday, March 14, skywatchers are in for a dramatic treat: a total lunar eclipse combined with a blood moon.
Here’s how—and when—to watch it in your area.

— WIRED (@wired.com) March 8, 2025 at 7:01 PM

Wired, backstopping its excellent recent political coverage — “How to See the Total Lunar Eclipse and Blood Moon This Month”:

… During a lunar eclipse, Earth blocks the light from the sun that normally illuminates the moon. On the night of March 13 and the early morning of the 14th, the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra, will cover the moon during its brightest phase. Partial lunar eclipses are relatively common—but those like this that coincide with a full moon are a relative rarity. On average, each region of Earth has the chance to view a total lunar eclipse only once every 2.5 years…

The moon appears red during a lunar eclipse because of how the sun’s light interacts with Earth’s atmosphere. Visible sunlight appears white, but is actually made up of combination of lights of different colors and frequencies, which can be defracted or scattered depending on how much of the atmosphere they have to travel through. It is for this reason that the sky appears blue when the sun is high in the sky but is often red at sunset, when the sun is low and its light is traveling longer distances through the atmosphere.

When sunlight hits Earth’s atmosphere during a lunar eclipse, light frequencies toward the blue end of the visible spectrum are scattered outward, away from Earth’s umbra, but those with longer wavelengths, toward the red part of the spectrum, are bent inward and cast onto the moon…

To observe the spectacle, astronomers recommend staying away from large cities with high levels of light pollution. They also recommend going to high places without visual barriers such as buildings or trees. “Try binoculars or a telescope for a better view. If you want to take a photo, use a camera on a tripod with exposures of at least several seconds,” NASA suggests.

The Washington Post says that “The eclipse begins at 11:57 p.m. Eastern, starts an hour-long totality at 2:26 a.m. and ends at 6 a.m.”

Speaking of predictable, yet rather more horrifying, events…

Something I've been chatting with someone about in DMs is I think worth bringing up quickly: Regardless of what happens with this CR, this GOP trifecta is quite possibly the most inept legislative governing body I've ever seen.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) March 12, 2025 at 2:48 PM

In previous administrations, trifectas have led to multiple legislative priorities being finalized within the first fifty days. Even in 2017, the GOP was ~*doing stuff*~.
Now? They can barely pass a CR! Not a budget, a CR!

Think to yourself: What win does the Trump administration actually have right now? What can it actually point at?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. No legislation, no real big executive wins (even in immigration or deportations!). Just a bunch of dudes stripping the walls for parts.

Through back channels with western officials, Russian experts have promoted a scenario in which Ukraine becomes a “big Austria” with a constitutional guarantee of neutrality, said a senior European diplomat. That would in effect allow Russia to “pull the strings” and increase control over Ukraine…

— Christopher Miller (@christopherjm.ft.com) March 12, 2025 at 6:49 PM

From The Financial Times:

By agreeing to a US proposal for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, Ukraine has turned the tables diplomatically on Russia.

If the Kremlin maintains its military campaign to subjugate Ukraine, it now risks being framed as the obstacle to peace and incurring the wrath of US President Donald Trump.

Yet Russian President Vladimir Putin has always insisted that a ceasefire could only come alongside a final settlement. He has shown no sign of stepping back from his maximalist demands, which would undermine Ukraine’s existence as a functional state. Last week, he told the mother of a Russian soldier killed in action that he would pursue nothing short of “victory”.

Moscow’s objective is to deceive the Trump administration into a “deal that — to the US team — looks like Trump gets what he wants (just a ceasefire), while in fact it will lead to what Russia wants (Russian control over Kyiv)”, said Janis Kluge of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

Ukraine, meanwhile, aims to dispel “illusions on the side of the US about what Russia is willing to do”, said Kluge. “It’s basically like a discovery process for the US team to understand where Russia really stands.”

Through back channels with western officials, Russian experts have promoted a scenario in which Ukraine becomes a “big Austria” with a constitutional guarantee of neutrality, said a senior European diplomat.

That would in effect allow Russia to “pull the strings” and increase its control over Ukraine, the diplomat said, adding that the Russians “want to replace Zelenskyy and put in a puppet regime”.

Thomas Graham, former senior director for Russia at the US National Security Council, said the Kremlin wanted Ukraine to be “well within Russia’s orbit”, much like neighbouring Belarus, while Kyiv’s ambition was to integrate with the west.

Sounds like a call for more war crimes. “Putin said the captured fighters should be “treated as terrorists, in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation,” Agence-France-Presse reports.” www.theguardian.com/world/live/2…

— Shashank Joshi (@shashj.bsky.social) March 12, 2025 at 5:36 PM

From The Guardian:

Putin says captured Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk will be treated as ‘terrorists’

Russia’s chief of general staff, Valery Gerasimov, said his forces had captured about 430 Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region, state news agency Tass reports.

Gerasimov, in a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin at a command post in Kursk, said:

The Ukrainian military, seeing futility of further resistance, started surrendering. Four hundred and thirty fighters were captured.

Putin said the captured fighters should be “treated as terrorists, in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation,” Agence-France-Presse reports.

Putin’s comments suggest the captured soldiers could face trials in Russian courts and be jailed for decades.

Looks like the truce proposal is off to a great start!

Everything Achieved for Ukraine’s Security Today Will Benefit Ukraine for Years and Decades to Come – Address by the President

12 March 2025 – 19:53

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today I held a Staff meeting – Technology Staff. The focus was primarily on our drones and the long-range strikes conducted by Ukrainian drones. We analyzed their recent use: the quality of the strikes, the results of their application, and the most effective drone models. The participants included military and government officials, and, most importantly – our manufacturers of drones and other weapons. We managed to discuss many technical details today. The key point is that we need to enhance our weapons’ ability to overcome Russian electronic warfare and air defenses. Of course, we also discussed ways to further increase production: there is still a need for contracts, funding, and investments from our partners. The manufacturers proposed specific technological solutions. In ten days, we will revisit these matters, and we need answers to everything discussed today. Our Ukrainian production of drones and their continuous modernization are a key part of our system of deterrence against Russia, which is crucial for ensuring Ukraine’s security in the long term; and this will also become our international advantage – our ability to export security after this war. Even now, there is immense interest from our friends around the world in Ukraine’s developments, our capabilities, and our technological production. In this war, Ukrainians have shown how much drones can do to protect positions and save people’s lives, we have shown the importance of constantly developing the unmanned component. Of course, this will also serve as our economic advantage in relations with other partners. But that’s after the war. For now, we must significantly increase the effectiveness of Ukrainian weapons; and everything achieved for Ukraine’s security today will benefit Ukraine for years and decades to come.

At the same time, we continue our work on the diplomatic front – to ensure that all the necessary conditions are swiftly in place to apply pressure on Russia, to achieve real peace. I am awaiting a report from the Ukrainian delegation that worked in Saudi Arabia, and we are preparing new tasks for our diplomacy. We must move toward peace. We must move toward security guarantees. We need to free our people. We are determined to work as quickly as possible with our partners. The key factor is our partners’ ability to ensure Russia’s readiness not to deceive but to genuinely end the war.

Right now, Russian strikes have not stopped. Around a hundred “Shahed” drones attack Ukraine each night. Missile strikes are regular, and some of our civilian infrastructure, our ports, have been hit, unfortunately, including in Odesa. Yesterday, a civilian ship was struck there – they were just loading wheat, destined for Algeria. People were killed, citizens of Syria. My condolences. Some people were also wounded, and they received the necessary assistance. Any attempt by Russia to “wriggle out” will be clear evidence to everyone that it is Russia that does not want peace. With the clear conclusions drawn by the world. I thank all those who are helping us defend lives and who are working to ensure reliable security. Now is a time when much is being decided. I thank everyone who is helping.

Glory to Ukraine!

President Zelenskyy also gave a press briefing about the Jeddah talks:

And First Lady Zelenska had a video call with the First Lady of Suriname:

Olena Zelenska Held a Video Call with the First Lady of Suriname

12 March 2025 – 10:56

First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska held a video call with First Lady of Suriname Mellisa Santokhi-Seenacherry.

Olena Zelenska expressed gratitude to Suriname, all CARICOM countries, and the Spouses of CARICOM Leaders Action Network (SCLAN) for their consistent support of Ukraine.

“SCLAN, like the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, addresses common global issues and seeks effective mechanisms to draw attention to and overcome global humanitarian challenges. This includes launching initiatives in healthcare and mental well-being, children’s rights and safety, women’s empowerment, and gender equality,” said the First Lady of Ukraine.

She also highlighted the participation of the First Lady of Suriname in the global platform event of the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen during the UN General Assembly session, in the Summit’s communication campaign for World Children’s Day, and in the gender equality panel at the Global Soft Power Summit in London.

During their conversation, the two First Ladies discussed future joint projects, including Mellisa Santokhi-Seenacherry’s “How We Feel” initiative on adolescent mental health.

“In Ukraine, we also place special emphasis on mental health, especially in the context of overcoming the consequences of war. The national mental health program ‘How Are You?’ helps Ukrainians take care of their psychological well-being,” Olena Zelenska emphasized.

She offered to cooperate in the communication campaign conducted by the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen on the occasion of Mental Health Awareness Month.

“This will allow us to raise awareness of the importance of mental health, share best practices, and support people around the world,” said the First Lady of Ukraine.

Outsourcing Some Good News

Sometimes it’s hard to take in the good news through all the pain.

Bad news first, but even some of the bad news (for us) is also bad news for this out-of-control administration.

We are in the midst of one of the worst measles outbreaks since the measles vaccine was introduced over 60 years ago.  When kids are dying will the anti-vax parents get a clue?  The jury is still out on that one.

The economy has slowed, inflation remains too high, people are losing their jobs and trade wars are tanking our stock markets.

But I like the looks of this word cloud!

Outsourcing Some Good News

Simon Rosenberg had a (relatively) optimistic take today.

The last few days I’ve been writing to you that it has felt like some of the wheels have started coming off the Trump-Musk bus from hell.

The ridiculous car-salesmen-in-chief’s pitch for Teslas yesterday in the White House driveway showed how worried the two madmen are about their joint stumbles (WHY ISN’T MUSK WEARING A SUIT!).

  • Musk has seen his Tesla stock lose half its value.
  • SpaceX had another rocket blow up.
  • Twitter/X had a global outage that appears to have been from their own internal mismanagement.
  • Anti-Tesla protests are popping up in more places and getting bigger.
  • Musk’s rancid attempt to dissemble the US government keeps losing in court, including the Supreme Court.
  • Trump’s approval has dropped.
  • Consumers have lost confidence in Trump’s economic stewardship.
  • Trump’s dangerous abandonment of Ukraine is being challenged very aggressively by our European allies, Democrats and even Senate Republicans.

It’s kind of nice seeing that all in one place.

There was also an upbeat report from Dan Pfeiffer, who is the smart Obama bro and the only one I pay attention to anymore.

When people say America is turning into an oligarchy, this is what they mean. It’s corrupt, but it’s also politically tone-deaf.

The so-called populist presidential candidate who ran as the self-proclaimed champion of the working class is responding to rising prices and a sinking stock market by writing a check to the world’s richest man.

I don’t need a poll to tell me how poorly that little stunt will go over.

And of course I’ll add that that the CR vote did not go Trump’s way, and we’ve had some strong statements today from the Democratic leaders in the House and the Senate.

Dems Standing Strong?

Sorry to expose you to Trump’s hideous orange visage, but even after all the lawlessness and bigotry and fuckery, it seems like this is crossing a Rubicon of some sort — a notorious antisemite defining who is and who is not a Jew in America:

Donald Trump: “Schumer is a Palestinian as far as I am concerned. He has become a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He is not Jewish anymore. He is a Palestinian.”

Fuck that fucking racist-as-fuck fuck!

Oh, and have we talked about how the aforementioned fucking-fuck has declared Tesla dealership protesters “domestic terrorists” yet?

Haven’t joined a #TelsaTakedown protest yet because I’m old and sick and the closest event is about 70 miles away. After hearing Dumbfuck Hitler* and his drug addled pal slander patriotic Americans, fuck all that — I’m in!

The sumbitch has inspired me to stand on a goddamn sidewalk waving a protest sign in Gainesville, Florida again. The fucker! I haven’t done that since 1988.

Now for what I’m tentatively regarding as qualified good news: (NYT)

Senate Democrats balk at funding extension, raising the risk of a shutdown.

The Senate Democratic leader said on Wednesday that Democrats would refuse to back a stopgap bill to fund the government through Sept. 30, significantly raising the chances of a government shutdown at the end of the week.

After a private party meeting, Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, instead urged Republicans to consider another extension to allow time to consider individual spending bills…

Democrats have been dubious about the Republican-drafted bill passed by the House on Tuesday, which would keep federal spending going at roughly current levels for the next six months, saying it would give the Trump administration too much leeway to continue efforts to drastically overhaul the government. The bill would need the support of at least eight Democrats to overcome procedural hurdles and come to a final vote.

Federal funding is set to lapse at 12:01 a.m. on March 15 if Congress does not act before then to extend it.

Any changes in the House bill or another extension would require the House to return and approve it, which is highly unlikely. Republican leaders deliberately adjourned the chamber and left town after passing the legislation on Tuesday to effectively force the Senate to accept their funding legislation.

The standoff puts Senate Democrats at risk of being blamed for any shutdown even as they complain about Trump administration disruptions to federal agencies. But they are under pressure from House Democrats and activists to stand against President Trump and Elon Musk as the new administration seeks to dismantle broad swaths of the federal bureaucracy.

Because it’s the FFTNYT, the next paragraph is this:

With two days left before the shutdown, there is still time for a reversal by Democrats when the potential implications of a shutdown become clearer.

Oh for fuck’s sake!

Anyway, the article says Hakeem Jeffries called the CR “a power grab that further unleashes and entrenches Elon Musk’s efforts,” which it is, and that he and other House leaders “pleaded with their Senate counterparts to follow their lead and oppose the government funding bill.” I don’t know what’s going to happen, but good for them.

Realize that this is not just nonsense and gaslighting, it shows that they understand that saying "Prices are gonna be higher, deal with it, buy American!!" isn't a winning message.
