The War for Ukraine Day 916: Last Night’s/This Morning’s Butcher’s Bill

A painting by Ukrainian artist NEIVANMADE. The words "NEVER AGAIN" are repeated over and over, from left to right and top to bottom, in a faded, washed out black against a white background. Red, the color of blood, runs and drips down across 2/3rds of the painting. "WHILE YOU TOLERATE TYRANTS" is written/painted in the bottom white corner below the three rows of "NEVER AGAIN".

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is doing great. She’s off for the rest of this week with her next treatment next Tuesday. Thank you for all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, I’m fried. Yes, I know it’s only Tuesday, still fried. I’m going to run through the butcher’s bill from last night, a couple of other items, and that’s about it.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Ukraine carried out a successful test of the first domestic-made ballistic missile, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Aug. 27.

“It may be too early to talk about it but I want to share it with you,” the president said at the Ukraine 2024 Independence forum in Kyiv.

Zelensky congratulated to the Ukrainian Defense Industry on the project but did not provide any further details on the weaponry.

A day earlier, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that Ukraine is preparing a response to Russian aerial strikes with weapons of its own production.

“This once again proves that for victory, we need long-range capabilities and the lifting of restrictions on strikes on the enemy’s military facilities,” Umerov said. “Ukraine is preparing its own response. Weapons of its own production.”

Zelensky previously revealed that Ukraine has developed a domestic-made missile-drone, Palianytsia. He said it has already been used against Russia.

Kyiv has received a number of long-range missiles from partners, such as U.S.-made ATACMS, British Storm Shadow, or French SCALP/T. Their potential impact is limited by Western restrictions on strikes deep inside Russian territory.

Russia regularly uses ballistic missiles like Iskander-M or Kinzhal in attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

President Zelenskyy participated in the Ukraine 2024 Independence Forum. There’s no transcript, but I’ve got the English closed captioning on for the video.

Politico has the details of Ukraine’s plan to present the Biden administration with a list of long range targets it wants approval to strike with US supplied weapons or British and French weapons that include US components.

Ukrainian officials are preparing to present a list of long-range targets in Russia to top U.S. national security officials that they think Kyiv’s military can hit if Washington were to lift its restrictions on U.S. weapons.

Ukraine is using the list as a last-ditch effort to convince Washington to lift the restrictions on U.S. weapons being used inside Russia. While Ukraine has previously provided the U.S. some of its potential targets in Russia, this list is supposed to be more tailored.

Ukraine’s defense minister, Rustem Umerov, and Andriy Yermak, senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will be in D.C. this week and plan to present the list to the administration during their discussions, according to three people familiar with Ukraine’s efforts.

The U.S. has said for months that lifting the restrictions won’t make a strategic difference in the war as Russia has moved its most important targets, including aircraft, back from the border and out of reach.

But Kyiv has identified several high-value targets that it can reach with U.S.-provided missiles, the people said. It hopes the list will bolster its campaign to convince President Joe Biden to change his mind.

“There should be no restrictions on the range of weapons for Ukraine, while terrorists have no such restrictions,” Zelenskyy said in a statement Monday. “Defenders of life should face no restrictions on weapons.”

All three people who talked to POLITICO were granted anonymity to speak about sensitive talks. The National Security Council and Pentagon both declined to comment.

The visit by Umerov and Yermak comes as Ukraine continues to press its incursion into the Russian border region of Kursk and grapples with the aftermath of Moscow’s massive missile attack on its energy grid.

Ukrainian officials have long lobbied the Biden administration to lift the restrictions on U.S. weapons so its military can more easily launch offensives inside Russia and push Russian forces back from the border. The administration has said since the beginning of the war it worries lifting the restrictions could provoke Russia to launch even more aggressive assaults on Ukraine.

While escalation is still a concern, the Biden administration has more recently been stressing its belief that there is little tactical advantage, given Russia moving assets out of range. The administration also assesses that Ukraine does not have enough Army Tactical Missile Systems — the long-range missiles it wants to use — to strike the high-value targets in Russia. Kyiv is using many of those missiles in their offensives inside Crimea — a battle the Biden administration assesses is going well for Ukraine. And the U.S. has a limited stockpile of ATACMs it can draw on to send Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials and lawmakers insist that the lifting of all restrictions is imperative to the country’s war effort, claiming it would give its military greater freedom to take the fight to Russia inside its own borders.

It is not clear exactly when Umerov and Yermak will arrive in Washington or what other meetings they plan to have while in the United States. On previous such trips, the Ukrainian officials have met with national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

In a briefing with reporters Monday, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said there were “no changes” to U.S. policy with respect to the restrictions.

“This is not a new desire by President Zelenskyy by any stretch,” he said. “But as I’ve said many, many times, we’ll keep the conversations with the Ukrainians going, but we’re going to keep them private.”

Some Ukrainian lawmakers and officials say they’ve seen signs that some in the Biden administration are considering lifting the restrictions in the coming days. A Democratic lawmaker with knowledge of the conversations also said the administration was considering Kyiv’s request. The lawmaker was granted anonymity to speak more freely about the administration’s thinking.

The White House has not said that it is considering any plan to change its policy.

Rescue operations are ongoing at the sites of strikes and falling debris in the regions of Ukraine that were attacked by Russia last night. All services are on the ground, and the rubble is being cleared.

Unfortunately, despite the effective work of our air defense, 4 people were killed and 16 were injured. My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.

In total, the enemy used over 90 aerial targets against civilians and infrastructure: 81 Shahed drones, as well as cruise, ballistic, and air-launched ballistics missiles.

We will undoubtedly respond to Russia for this and all other attacks. Crimes against humanity cannot go unpunished.

From the overall tally, four people were killed and 16 injured only during the overnight mass strike, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) August 27, 2024

Here are the details from The Kyiv Independent:

Russian attacks across Ukraine killed at least seven people and injured at least 34 over the past day, regional authorities reported on Aug. 27.

Russia launched a combined wave of attacks against Ukraine for the second night in a row, reportedly using 81 Shahed-type attack drones and 10 missiles. A day before, Russia launched its largest aerial strike throughout the full-scale war, using over 230 missiles and drones.

From the overall tally, four people were killed and 16 injured only during the overnight strike on Aug. 27, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Overall, Russian forces launched three Kinzhal air-launched ballistic missiles from MiG-31K aircraft, five Kh-101 cruise missiles from Tu-95 bomber planes, one Iskander-M ballistic missile, and one Iskander-K cruise missile, Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk said.

Five Kh-101 cruise missiles and 60 drones were intercepted by Ukrainian defenses, the commander noted.

Russia attacked Kyiv Oblast and Kyiv with drones and missiles, with an air raid alert ongoing for eight hours. No damage or victims were reported.

Around 10 attack drones and several missiles were downed near Kyiv, said city administration head Serhii Popko, adding that “everything that flew to the capital was destroyed.”

Russian forces also targeted Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Oblast over the past day, resulting in three civilian deaths, regional governor Ivan Fedorov reported. At least two of the fatalities were recorded during drone attacks overnight on Aug. 27.

Five civilians were injured in the region, including an 86-year-old woman. Four of them are currently being treated in a local hospital.

Several homes were damaged by blast waves and debris from the attack, and a fire occurred in a field, Fedorov said, adding that at least 128 drones attacked the region over the past 24 hours.

In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, three people were killed and 13 injured over the past day, Governor Serhii Lysak reported.

Eight of the injured and one fatality were reported during the day on Aug. 26 following Russian attacks against the Nikopol district.

Late at night, a Russian Iskander missile struck a hotel in the city of Kryvyi Rih, killing at least two people and injuring at least five, Lysak reported.

In Kharkiv Oblast, four people were injured when Russia struck an infrastructure facility with an Iskander missile, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Russian attacks against Kherson Oblast killed one person and injured 10 others, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported.

A critical infrastructure site, medical and educational institutions, high-rise buildings, houses, and other buildings were reportedly damaged.

One person was injured in Russian attacks against Kostiantynivka in Donetsk Oblast on Aug. 26, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported.

Another civilian was injured during drone attacks in Khmelnytskyi Oblast, said Serhii Tiurin, the regional governor. Eight drones were downed over the oblast, with at least two houses catching fire as a result.

Luhansk, Mykolaiv, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Poltava, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, and Sumy oblasts also came under attack, but no casualties were reported.

For the second night in a row, the Polish Air Force scrambled its fighter jets as Russia attacked western Ukrainian regions. The Polish military said that a Russian drone may have entered Polish airspace during a previous attack on Aug. 26.

Kharkiv:

⚡️ Russian attack on Kharkiv Oblast town kills 1, injures 6, including pregnant woman.

Russian forces attacked the town of Bohodukhiv in Kharkiv Oblast on Aug. 27, killing one person and injuring six, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported.https://t.co/DNL3WENXvw

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) August 27, 2024

The Kyiv Independent has the details:

Russian forces attacked the town of Bohodukhiv in Kharkiv Oblast on Aug. 27, killing one person and injuring six, the Prosecutor General’s Office reported.

One of the missiles hit near a bus stop, killing a 71-year-old man. Six people suffered injuries, among them three men, one woman, a 15-year-old boy, and a pregnant woman, according to the statement.

Russia also hit an industrial facility and damaged houses, outbuildings, and cars.

According to preliminary data, Russian troops attacked the settlement with a Tornado-S multiple-launch rocket system.

Previously, Russian troops carried out a missile strike on Bohodukhiv on Aug. 22, killing one person and injuring at least six others, including a child.

Earlier today, Russia launched a combined wave of attacks against Ukraine for the second night in a row, reportedly using 81 Shahed-type attack drones and 10 missiles.

In Kharkiv Oblast, four people were injured when Russia struck an infrastructure facility with an Iskander missile, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov.

A day before, Russia launched its largest aerial strike throughout the full-scale war, using over 230 missiles and drones.

Poltava Oblast:

⚡️ Three out of the five residents of Ukraine’s Poltava Oblast injured in a mass Russian attack on Aug. 26 have died in the hospital, Governor Filip Pronin announced on Aug. 27.https://t.co/TuEHbzYh4N

— The Kyiv Independent (@KyivIndependent) August 27, 2024

From The Kyiv Independent:

Three out of the five residents of Ukraine’s Poltava Oblast injured in a mass Russian attack on Aug. 26 have died in the hospital, Governor Filip Pronin announced on Aug. 27.

Russia launched what Ukraine‘s Air Force called the largest attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion on Aug. 26, striking 15 oblasts across the country.

Excluding the latest casualties, seven civilians had been killed and over 40 injured across Ukraine.

The five Poltava Oblast residents were injured early on Aug. 26 when Russia targeted an industrial facility in the region.

Later the same day, drone debris damaged a house in the Lubny district, injuring a woman.

Poltava Oblast lies in central Ukraine, bordering Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy and Kyiv oblasts.

Pokrovsk:

A new assessment from Tatarigami and his Frontelligence Insight team:

As Russian forces close in on Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub in Ukraine’s Donbas region, concerns about its potential loss are mounting. There is uncertainty about why Pokrovsk is more significant than other recently lost towns. This thread aims to clarify this and other aspects:Image
2/ Before falling to Russian forces in February 2024, Avdiivka was vital for Ukrainian troops, serving as a fortress, protecting key logistical routes in Donetsk Oblast, and a potential foothold for deoccupying Donetsk. Since 2022, Russia has invested heavily in capturing itImage
3/ Pokrovsk, with a pre-war population of ~60,000, lies west of Avdiivka at a key railroad crossroads. It has become a key distribution hub, supporting Ukrainian forces along a broad frontline from Vuhledar to the north of Donetsk and beyond. The railways are highlighted in redImage

4/ Currently, only two places in the Donbas serve this vital function – Pokrovsk and Kramatorsk

The significance of Pokrovsk extends beyond its rail connections – it is also located at a key road juncture, serving a similar role in the transportation and distribution of suppliesImage

5/ The road linking Pokrovsk to Kostyantynivka has long been a Russian target. Cutting it off would worsen the resupply of troops in the Bakhmut-Horlivka sector. The potential loss of Pokrovsk poses an operational threat to logistics in the region, from Vuhledar to Horlivka
6/ Another concern is the political one: Pokrovsk is just over 20 kilometers from the Dnipro Oblast border. Given Russia’s re-entry into Kharkiv Oblast in May 2024, there’s little reason to think Putin will stop at Donetsk and Luhansk borders.Image
7/ Since July, the pace of Russian advancement in this area has quickened, allowing them to bypass most of the defensive lines Ukraine rapidly built after Avdiivka’s fall. This is visible on the map by OSINT group @Black_BirdGroup, which used satellite imagery to map defensesImage
8/ Satellite imagery of seized UA positions shows signs of artillery shelling, though less extensive than in Ocheretyne. This likely indicates that Ukrainian troops in the Pokrovsk area retreated multiple times due to insufficient forces and resources for an organized defense
9/ While concerns about the lack of fortifications behind Avdiivka are valid, the major issue is the shortage of manpower and units to defend them. Regardless of how well-constructed the defenses are, if they are staffed at only 10-20% of capacity, they likely will be lost
10/ Typically, both Ukraine and Russia redeploy forces to stabilize critical areas by moving units from quieter sectors. Ukraine’s redeployment to Kharkiv, and then Sumy for the Kursk operation has reduced the available units for stabilization efforts.
11/ Does this mean that the loss of Pokrovsk is imminent? No, but the likelihood is increasing due to the balance of forces. Despite Ukrainian efforts to draw Russian forces away with the Kursk incursion, Russian leadership is hesitant to redeploy significant forces from Pokrovsk
12/ Ukraine has options to stabilize the line, including deploying new brigades, repositioning forces from Kursk and Kharkiv, or reallocating battalions from more stable fronts. However, time is against the defenders, and there is a risk of a serious operational catastrophe.Image
13/ The full analysis with detailed insights and nuances from Frontelligence Insight will be available soon on the @EuromaidanPress website and our own site. Follow our account to stay updated, and please like and share the opening message to help increase visibility.

Some thoughts after a day in Pokrovsk: The atmosphere is quite tense. Mandatory evacuation for families with children was announced on August 20th, and starting tomorrow, the curfew will last 20 hours a day, from 3 p.m. to 11 a.m. 1/👇🏻 pic.twitter.com/VxzM0UPrRR

3/ At the railway station, it’s mostly women, kids, and the elderly, getting divided into groups based on where they’re heading next, boarding different carriages bound for Dnipro and then into the unknown. pic.twitter.com/tjNBTaG8RR

— Maria Avdeeva (@maria_avdv) August 27, 2024

5/ Yet most believe they’ll return home soon, seeing this as just a temporary move for their children’s safety and the chance to start the school year. pic.twitter.com/JbmM3fbGCV

The Power of Mom

by Betty Cracker|  August 27, 20246:26 pm| 106 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Politics

“If you want to understand any woman, you must first ask about her mother and listen carefully.”

— Anita Diamant, The Red Tent

In her acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, Kamala Harris talked about her mom, explaining how being raised by the formidable Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris shaped her world view and continues to inform her decision-making today.

Mother Jones reporter Nina Martin, then with a different publication, had lunch with Dr. Harris 17 years ago as part of a profile on Kamala Harris, who was then running for reelection as district attorney in San Francisco:

Everyone told me, if you truly want to understand who Kamala Harris is and how she got that way, you need to talk to her mother. I wrangled a meeting with Dr. Harris, then a researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Everyone was right. The piece at MJ isn’t paywalled; here’s a link. Also, a short excerpt:

“Shyamala Gopalan Harris did not believe in coddling. Pay her daughters, Kamala and Maya, an allowance for doing chores? “For what? I give you food. I give you rent,” scoffed the woman who would someday launch a million coconut memes. “If you do the dishes, you should get two dollars? You ate from the damn dishes!” Reward the future vice president of the United States—and possible future president—for getting decent grades? Ridiculous. “What does that tell you?” her mother chided as if I had disagreed. (I didn’t.) “It says, ‘You know, I really thought you were stupid. Oh, you surprised Mommy!’ No.”

When the breast cancer researcher and single mother had to work in her lab on the weekends, her daughters went with her, like it or not. “I’m not going to get a babysitter,” Dr. Harris laughed…”

Go read the whole thing. It’s heart-warming and also sad because you can see why the vice president misses her mom so much. It’s too bad Dr. Harris didn’t live to see her eldest daughter win her party’s nomination.

Every family is different, but so many of us owe who we are to our moms. I grew up in a very different place and culture, but Dr. Harris’s no-nonsense and brusque style reminds me a lot of my mother, who was a hardworking nurse and single mom who refused to suffer fools (or raise any). She’s been gone 10 years now, and I miss her every single day.

Not to give tips to the opposition, but conservatives would be far better off if they just pretended Tim Walz didn’t exist. Attacking him is a liability at this point. Even Trump kind of gets it and barely mentions him.

— Ryan (@ryeguy427) August 26, 2024

Scout, (not) incidentally, is a rescue dog:

show full post on front page

… In 2017, Tim Walz made Gus a promise. If he won the election for Minnesota governor the following year, the family could get a dog. A high-wire and stressful campaign season unfolded over the next several months. But despite the craziness, his son didn’t forget. (He wasn’t the type: Several years before, he delivered a detailed PowerPoint presentation on why they should get a cat. “To be honest, the fight for the cat was one of Gus’s premier projects,” Walz told reporters at the time. “Sold my wife.”)

Walz won the election in November 2018 with 53.8% of the vote. His children congratulated their father…and then came to collect their prize.

Before Scout was the First Dog of Minnesota, he was Gene, an abandoned rescue. At 11 weeks old, someone left him and his nine littermates on the side of a rural road in Oklahoma. Many had crawled down and gotten stuck in a ravine right before a rainstorm. A woman named Kathy discovered them. With the help of her son, she coaxed them all out before the area flooded. They knew if they didn’t get them all out now, they never would.

The litter was taken in by the Minnesota-based nonprofit Midwest Animal Rescue and Services. One by one, they gave each one a temporary name. One male in particular—described by MARS to Vogue as “very calm, slightly nervous, and well behaved”—was called Gene…

They posted an adoption listing for Gene online. Within several days, MARS had an application from the Walz family. They rechristened him as Scout. “I’m proud that Minnesota’s First Dog is a rescue dog, and I hope Scout—who has been a very good boy—serves as a reminder for Minnesotans that there are a lot of pups waiting to be adopted,” the governor said at the time.

Scout settled in well to the Governor’s Mansion in St. Paul. He played frisbee in the backyard with the governor. He drove with his family to Dairy Queen for Pup Cups. He frequently snuck cat food from the bowls of his feline sibling Afton, and later Honey. Oh, and he ate his dad’s glasses before a COVID-19 press briefing. (The Walz family tells Vogue that if Scout had a motto, it would be: “If I can reach it, I can eat it.”)…

A year later, the Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris chose Tim Walz as her running mate. As soon as the announcement broke, Matt Nelson, the man behind the wildly popular Instagram account WeRateDogs, said he was flooded with notifications about Scout. “I believe we were tagged in [or] sent this tweet no less than 200 times in the minutes after it was posted,” he says. So he reposted it on his account—and it quickly went viral among his four million-plus followers.

Nelson wasn’t surprised. Walz, a former school teacher and high school football coach, felt relatable and familiar to many Americans. His tweets about Scout only furthered that perception: “It is simply a guy having a very human, normal reaction to something their dog did. For most of my audience, they can see their dog doing what Scout did and they can see themselves saying ‘this damn dog’ in response,” he says. But Nelson also believes it showcases something else: his character. “He’s a rescue,” he notes. “I’ve been in this dog internet space for nearly a decade, and I can say that there are few better subtle indicators of character than choosing to adopt an animal in need of a home.”

When Vogue first broke this gripping story, before the DNC convention, JD Vance felt it incumbent upon himself to procure a totally not rented, much more classy professional-type dog of his own to show off. (It’s quite possible the poor thing does live in the Vance household, but I don’t think he’s had much chance to interact with JD… )

This fool has no idea how to hold a leash. It’s going to take a lot more than a rented dog to make him not weird.

C.R.E.A.M.

Gary Leglum at Wonkette has a post about a recent op-ed in the NYT by Republican consultant Juliana Glover, who’s losing sleep over the possibility that Trump might, just maybe, perhaps steal/grift from the campaign like he does from every other goddam thing he’s ever been involved in:

Glover is big concerned because the Trump campaign seems to be repeating its actions in 2020 when many of the donations it brought in “went into a legal and financial black hole reportedly controlled by Trump family members and close associates.”

One of the many grifts that Glover names is that the biggest spend of the Trump 2020 campaign was with a media consulting firm whose ownership is secret, but is probably run by Lara Trump.

Gary’s post is worth reading, but I’m not even going to pretend to put on my shocked face when it comes to this.   Though I will share an anecdote that might explain just a little bit about why Republicans aren’t up in arms about this (yet).

I was talking politics with a family member who’s a hardcore Republican, but not the kind that flies Trump flags.  He’s an intelligent guy, and our conversation was mostly about nuts-and-bolts, common-ground stuff like our shared concern that an uninformed slice of the population is going to decide the election.  I mentioned that the one thing I’d be worrying about if I were in his shoes would be fundraising — Trump isn’t doing enough, PACs can’t spend money in the directed ways that a campaign can, etc.  If you read this blog you know the issue, and it’s the same one consultant Glover is concerned about.

Anyway, I contrasted Trump’s fundraising with Act Blue and the Democrats’ small-dollar donations, and he just gave me a blank stare.  He had never heard of Act Blue or how Democratic campaigns up and down the ballot leverage small-dollar donors.  He lives in a Fox bubble, and apparently they don’t even talk about the big difference between Republican and Democratic fundraising.  So, at least part of the answer as to why Republicans aren’t pissed about the way Trump grifts from them is that Fox doesn’t tell them about it.  No big shock, but worth noting.

Also, note that I’m traveling and in a time zone 6 hours earlier than Eastern so no more early posts from me.

Edit:  This just popped up on Bluesky.

Going local: A new streaming service peeks into news in 2024 election swing states https://t.co/0wkqwqFhCm

— The Associated Press (@AP) August 27, 2024

Fans of politics have another way to keep track of what’s happening in the most competitive states in the country through a new service that collects and streams local newscasts.

Swing State Election News, which began operation Monday, lets streamers choose from among 37 local television stations in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. They are primarily local affiliates of CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox.

Those are the states that pollsters have concluded will most likely decide the presidential contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The service will allow people to test the maxim of “all politics is local” by closely following how the campaigns are being waged there…

Swing State Election News is an outgrowth of Zeam, a free streaming service affiliated with Gray Television that began last winter. Zeam caters to people who have given up cable or satellite television subscriptions by offering hundreds of local market broadcasts. The bulk of its users follow their local markets but a significant number check in on other areas where they may have had ties in the past, the service said.

Zeam doesn’t reveal how many people use the service.

Swing State Election News allows users to choose between live programming or archived newscasts. A quick click Monday on a tab, for instance, calls up the morning newscast on WMGT-TV in Macon, Georgia.

As the campaign goes on, Perry said the newscasts will offer a window into rallies and other events held in those states, along with details in local House and Senate races that may impact control of those chambers…

One important indicator of how the campaigns are going will be missing, however. A local newscast in the swing states this fall is expected to be filled with commercials for the presidential candidates, which can illustrate some of the campaign strategies and issues they feel are resonating.

Swing State Election News sells its own advertising, however, and will not show what is being seen in the local advertising breaks, Perry said.

In another effort aimed at boosting election news for swing states, The Associated Press said last month it is offering its campaign coverage to a series of small, independent news organizations that can’t otherwise afford it.

Noonan has it completely wrong. Harris was attacked by Sanders progressives in 2019. She overcame their opposition to win the VP nomination. (This struggle is what helped create the powerful #Khive network). She's been openly supported by HRC for five years. https://t.co/xLBKOPgTy8

Late Night Open Thread: Telegram, for Mr. Musk

by Anne Laurie|  August 27, 20243:18 am| 208 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Grifters Gonna Grift, Information Warfare, Open Threads, Tech News & Issues

Telegram has been the go-to messaging system for the far right across the world since its inception. It's also not actually end-to-end encrypted like they were all led to believe and now they're shitting themselves. https://t.co/mwyv5AR2K2

— Patrick S. Tomlinson (@stealthygeek) August 26, 2024

It's so bad that Putin trotted out former spy, ex-con, & planted fake journalist at an early trump presser, Maria Butina, now a "high-ranking govt. official," to declare that Durov's arrest marked "the end of free speech in Europe," as quoted by Reuters. LOL.

— Ronnie Bauch (@RSBauch) August 26, 2024

Adam has already written about Durov’s arrest in France, but I’m curious about Musk’s latest intermittent FREEZE PEACH!!! outburst in connection with the Telegram bust. Per Fortune, via MSN.com, “Elon Musk calls for release of Telegram founder Pavel Durov as arrest sparks debate whether X owner may be next”:

… The spectacular arrest of Pavel Durov on the tarmac of Paris’s Le Bourget airport just after his private jet touched down on Saturday elicited an intense debate over where exactly the boundaries of protected free speech end and the rule of law begins.

Durov is being held in France initially without formal charges, but authorities could accuse the Telegram founder of failing to police illegal content and commerce conducted via Telegram.

Musk’s X is likewise in the crosshairs of European policymakers, with the EU Commission recently reminding him of its failure to observe the Digital Services Act that requires large platform owners to systematically clamp down on false and misleading content.

The entrepreneur, who is also CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, called on France to “free Pavel”, warning his arrest signalled dangerous times ahead for democracy.

“The 2nd amendment is the only reason long-term that the 1st amendment will be upheld,” he added, referring to the constitutionally-protected right in the United States to bear arms and exercise free speech…

show full post on front page

Musk increasingly casts himself as someone trying to stem a rising tide of censorship and government overreach. The X owner, earlier this month, threw a vulgar insult at Brussels for its perceived heavy handed approach to regulation. (Musk has, as of now, yet to criticize China, the manufacturing hub for half of Tesla cars)…

Alexander Vindman, the retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel that testified as a key witness in Trump’s first impeachment, wrote that Durov’s case had broader implications for social media sites like X.

“There’s a growing intolerance for platforming disinfo & malign influence & a growing appetite for accountability,” he wrote. “Musk should be nervous.”

Last month, Musk posted a deepfake video with an AI-generated voiceover of Kamala Harris calling herself a diversity hire and Biden senile. The post didn’t explicitly mention the use of AI in what some argued was a violation of X’s his own terms of service against manipulating content for the purposes of deception…

Musk’s stewardship of X is turning into a financial disaster for the entrepreneur. According to internal company figures cited by the New York Times, U.S. revenue in Q2 plunged to $114 million, representing a steep 84% decline over pre-Musk Twitter just two years prior.

Fidelity has taken a massive charge on the value of its private investment in X, while money managers are treating the company’s debt as if it was radioactive. A consortium of banks that underwrote Musk’s October 2022 buyout have been unable to offload nearly $13 billion of leveraged loans still sitting on their book…

“The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons.”

Also, apart from Russia’s current financial difficulties, the Financial Times has reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been doing some public belt-tightening concerning Dubai’s global investments, which can’t be any more pleasant for Musk than for Mr. Durov.

“Our company facilitates crimes and I try not to get clipped.” https://t.co/rqqoRKEQfM

A quick housekeeping note. Rosie is doing great. She’s got all this week off before her next treatment. Thank you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Russia spent the small hours and most of today pounding civilian targets across Ukraine. And air raid alerts are still up over most of Ukraine or are going up and down in the different oblasts.

Update at 8;45 PM EDT/3:45 AM local time in Ukraine

Russia has its strategic bombers and strike fighters up! Cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as drone swarms to clear the way, are inbound!

Air raid alert map of Ukraine. Air raid warning are up over every region (oblast) of Ukraine. The map also indicates that Russian strategic aviation - bombers - are in the air over Russia and cruise and ballistic missiles are inbound to Ukraine.

End update

Among the targets was the Kyiv hydroelectric plant and dam.

Russia targeted the dam of the Kyiv Sea north of the capital, with one missile striking it. If the dam breaks, millions of people downstream can die. https://t.co/lGic3XE4MP pic.twitter.com/YBTUWIZzuC

— Yaroslav Trofimov (@yarotrof) August 26, 2024

If Russia breaches the dam, then what happened last year in Kherson Oblast will happen to Kyiv.

And lest anyone think that’s doomsaying, the Russians spent a lot of time just last month claiming Ukraine was going to blow the damn up and blame Russia for it.

Remember what I wrote way back in February of 2022 during the first days of Russia’s genocidal re-invasion: if Putin cannot have Kyiv and Ukraine, then no one, including the Ukrainians gets to have Kyiv and Ukraine.

The largest russian air attack: Ukrainian defenders shot down 102 missiles and 99 UAVs.

The largest russian air attack: Ukrainian defenders shot down 102 missiles and 99 UAVs.

Overnight, russia attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure with 109 Shahed UAVs and 127 missiles of various types.

Ukrainian air defenders shot down 201 aerial targets, including:
• 99 Shahed UAVs
• 99 Kh-101, Kalibr, Kh-59 missiles
• 1 Kh-47M2 Kindzhal missile
• 1 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missile
• 1 Kh-22 cruise missile

Thank you, air defenders, for your heroic work!
Thank you, partners, for strengthening Ukraine’s air defense!

The Kyiv Independent has the details on today’s attacks:

Russia has launched the largest attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s Air Force reported on Aug. 26.

Seven people were killed and 47 were injured, according to the State Emergency Service.

Russian forces carried out an attack targeting 15 oblasts, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

Russia launched 127 missiles and 109 drones, while Ukraine downed 102 missiles and 99 drones, according to the Air Force. Russian strikes hit several civilian, energy, and fuel facilities, including a dam in Kyiv, part of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Ukrainian forces intercepted one Kinzhal ballistic missile, one Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missile, one Kh-22 cruise missile, 99 Kh-101, Kalibr, and Kh-59/69 cruise missiles, as well as 99 Shahed-type drones.

A few drones disappeared from location radars and were lost in the Ukrainian territory. Two unmanned aerial vehicles crossed the border with Belarus.

Ukraine deployed all available resources to repel the attack, including jets, anti-aircraft missile forces, mobile fire groups, and electronic warfare units, the Air Force said.

Following the mass Russian attack against Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko, and Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the head of state grid operator Ukrenergo.

The group discussed the efficiency of air defense and electronic warfare systems and mobile fire groups in each region, among other issues.

Demining operations are underway at the sites affected by Russian attacks. In some areas, Russian forces attacked civilian facilities with cluster munitions. Sappers must check the locations before power engineers can start repairing, according to Zelensky.

Despite all the announcements and pledges over the past several months, the promised air defense systems and munitions have yet to arrive in Ukraine.

Ukraine was promised more air defense systems at the NATO summit last month, but none have been supplied so far, apparently.

There Should Be No Restrictions on the Range of Weapons for Ukraine, While Terrorists Have No Such Restrictions – Address by the President

26 August 2024 – 12:40

Dear Ukrainians!

Now, all over the country, efforts are underway to eliminate the consequences of the Russian strike.

It was one of the heaviest strikes – a combined one. More than a hundred missiles of various types and about a hundred “Shahed” drones. And like most previous Russian strikes, this one was just as vile, targeting critical civilian infrastructure. Most of our regions – from the Kharkiv region and Kyiv to Odesa and our western regions.

Unfortunately, some people were killed. My condolences to all their families and friends. There are dozens of injured people, and all of them are receiving the necessary assistance.

There is a lot of damage in the energy sector. But wherever there is a power outage, restoration is already underway. Our repair crews will work around the clock. We will restore electricity. In all cities and communities that need it, the Points of Invincibility are about to open now.

And it is crucial that our partners implement everything we have agreed with them. Air defense systems, missiles for them. And also, we must finally come to a collective shooting down of Russian missiles and drones. Today, they targeted objects in the Volyn, Lviv, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. The Vinnytsia and Khmelnytskyi regions, and our Ternopil region. In our various regions of Ukraine, we could do much more to protect lives if the aviation of our European neighbors worked alongside our F-16s and alongside our air defense. If such unity has worked so obviously well in the Middle East, it should work in Europe as well. Life has the same value everywhere.

And one more thing.

Putin remains true to himself – it is a sick creature; this has long been clear to everyone. But it is also clear that he can only do what the world allows him to do. Weaknesses and lack of decisions in response feed terror. And every leader, every partner of ours knows what strong decisions are needed to end this war – and to end it justly. There should be no restrictions on the range of weapons for Ukraine, while terrorists have no such restrictions. Defenders of life should face no restrictions on weapons, while Russia uses all kinds of its own weapons, as well as “Shahed” drones and ballistic missiles from North Korea. The United States, the United Kingdom, France, and other partners have the power to help us stop terror. We need decisions.

Glory to Ukraine!

And here’s the second address:

Each of These Strikes Repeatedly Brings Us Back to the Task of Long-Range Capabilities – Address by the President

26 August 2024 – 20:08

Dear Ukrainians!

The aftermath of the Russian strike is still being dealt with. In total, there were more than 120 missiles of various types and over a hundred Shahed drones. The missiles were launched from various locations, including the airspace over Kursk and Belgorod regions, other Russia’s border areas, the Black Sea, and the territory of our occupied Crimea. Each of these strikes repeatedly brings us back to the task of long-range capabilities – the need to provide our Defense Forces with enough long-range weapons that can destroy terrorists exactly in the areas of their strikes. This is the optimal counter-terrorism tactic, one that every partner of ours has the right to and would undoubtedly use to protect themselves. And we expect decisions from them – decisions on our long-range capabilities. The physical presence of our Forces in the Kursk region and our active efforts to eliminate the Russian threat on its own territory are also a way to compensate for the deficit of long-range capabilities.

Today, I started the day with a separate long conversation with Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi – discussing in detail the repulsion of this missile attack, our response to Russia – we are preparing it, the use of F-16s, and the ongoing operation in the Kursk region. We continue our actions in the designated areas as needed for Ukraine. Over the past day, we’ve gained more control and once again added to our “exchange fund.” The Commander-in-Chief also reported on the situation on the Donetsk front, both separately and at the Staff meeting, focusing on the Pokrovsk direction, which remains the most difficult with the heaviest Russian assaults, as well as the Vremivka, Toretsk, and Kurakhove directions. Decisions were made to strengthen our positions. I thank every soldier and commander, every unit that is doing everything to destroy as much enemy force as possible. At the Staff meeting today, all the necessary reports were provided on the energy sector – the current state of the system and its restoration capabilities. Work will continue around the clock. We also thoroughly reviewed the situation regarding protective structures at energy facilities, and several important decisions were made on this matter as well. Thank you to everyone who promptly fulfills these tasks for the sake of our state and our people!

And one more thing.

I held a meeting with the heads of law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies, including the Prosecutor General and the Head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Reports were presented on combating collaborators and on criminal cases against those who justify Russian aggression and contribute to this war against Ukraine. We also specifically addressed border issues and incidents of illegal crossings, with reports from Klymenko, Maliuk, and Sukhachov. Regarding the anti-corruption program and the status of all related measures, reports were given by the heads of NACP, NABU, and SAP. In two weeks, they have to develop and present a clear plan for solving problematic issues – all of them are absolutely clear. Action is needed.

Glory to Ukraine!

It is important to understand that the russians are using Shakheds to allegedly force the Ukrainian Armed Forces to waste SAM missiles on them, so that in the end there will be no missiles to shoot down cruise missiles.

— Kate from Kharkiv (@BohuslavskaKate) August 26, 2024

I honestly don’t know what else there is left to say. What more informed analysis I can provide. Every day that the US and its NATO allies drag out delivering the promised, yet consistently delayed air defense systems, munitions, and other weapons systems is a gift to Putin. Every day that the Biden administration vacillates over giving Ukraine permission to US its US supplied or non-US supplied, but manufactured with US parts long range weapons systems on legitimate Russian targets inside of Russia advances Putin’s strategic goals. And it costs more innocent Ukrainians their lives.

That’s enough for today.
