Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

“But what about the lurkers?”

It’s the corruption, stupid.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

That meeting sounds like a shotgun wedding between a shitshow and a clusterfuck.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Petty moves from a petty man.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Sunday Morning Open Thread: Pride Month Is For Everyone

For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live proudly – even when it meant putting their lives at risk.

Organizers say record-setting drag queen story time reading kicks off Philadelphia Pride Month https://t.co/lGjTrkD7iI

— The Associated Press (@AP) June 1, 2024

Organizers of a drag queen story time reading at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia say several hundred people helped establish a world record for attendance at such an event to kick off Pride Month celebrations in the birthplace of America.

The event Saturday, hosted by the Philadelphia Gay News and sponsored by Visit Philadelphia, saw Philadelphia drag performers reading children’s stories to 263 people, which organizers said was a first-ever Guinness World Record in the category…

Mark Segal, publisher of Philadelphia Gay News, said in a statement that “creating history-making moments like we’ve done today, hosted on land synonymous with our country’s fight for fundamental rights and freedom, serves as a powerful reminder of the resiliency, talent and culture that make up the fabric of our great American city.”

A message was sent earlier to Guinness representatives seeking comment. The Guinness site has a June 2023 story about a record for the most people attending a drag brunch with 412 attendees in Brooklyn, New York.

I was inspired this morning by kalakal who posted a couple of songs related to Thursday’s verdict in the NY election interference trial.

So how about an old-fashioned trial / verdict / getting what’s coming to him themed music thread to celebrate this week’s events in NY?

Last night, Russia launched another attack on Ukraine with more than 50 missiles of various types and about 50 Shahed drones. They targeted the south, center and west of Ukraine. Two thermal power plants are seriously damaged.

This was the sixth massive attack on Ukrainian thermal power plants in 2.5 months – DTEK energy company.

▪️ An attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure facility was reported in the morning by the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration.

▪️ Russians also hit one of the energy infrastructure facilities in Zaporizhzhia. According to the head of the regional military administration, there is destruction at the site of the hit.

President Zelenskyy is still traveling, so no daily address has been posted for yesterday or today. The official YouTube channel of the President of Ukraine has posted the video of his interview with The Guardian that I quoted from on Thursday night. It is below.

Today, as we mark International Children’s Day, we are once again reminded of what the russian aggression has done to the children of Ukraine.

Kids killed. Kids kidnapped. Kids in bomb shelters. Kids robbed of their childhood.

The world must unite to protect children from the genocidal war waged against a sovereign nation by a terrorist state.

Russia has stolen the childhood of Ukrainian children, forcing them to witness horrors of the war. Yet, they continue to live, learn, and dream. Ukrainians fight so these children won’t have to.#InternationalChildrensDay pic.twitter.com/G2hs0R3Wwm

Five deported orphans were returned to Ukraine, reports the head of Save Ukraine organization

“We managed to rescue five children from the Novopetrivsk orphanage in the Mykolaiv region. The children were surviving for 3 months on the very front line, hiding from bombs and missiles in the basement without food and water, and later experienced the horrors of deportation. In mid-July of 2022, they were kidnapped by Russians at gunpoint and moved to the occupied territory,” the statement said.

In October 2022, the invaders moved them to Crimea, and then to Anapa (Krasnodar region). From there, the children were rescued and taken to a safer territory in Georgia.

Ukrainian soldiers in russian captivity or after it.

Now compare how tired and exhausted our soldiers are when they return home from captivity. And what well-fed and healthy russian prisoners of war return from Ukraine to russia during the exchange. And you will no longer have any doubts about which country the Nazis and terrorists are actually located in. Russia violates all international rights, moral and human principles.

I’m not even talking about torture, murder, shooting of Ukrainian soldiers by Russian terrorists.

The return of our soldiers, our guys and girls from captivity is always a small victory and a big holiday for us.

Despite the fatigue and terrible conditions of detention of prisoners by russian fascists. In the eyes of our soldiers, joy for returning home🇺🇦🫡

Bacon Grease & Whiny Jerks (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  June 1, 20242:57 pm| 258 Comments

This post is in: Food & Recipes, Open Threads

I saw this ad in one of my fancy gourmet magazines and was taken aback:

Bacon grease productMy Granny always kept a coffee can of bacon grease next to her stove and used it to cook just about everything. She started life as a Georgia farm girl during the Great Depression, so she had a “waste not, want not” outlook.

I picked up most of my early cooking skills (such as they were) from Granny since my mom and her mom viewed cooking as a distraction to be endured as seldom as possible. Though I’ve expanded my repertoire considerably over the years, thanks mostly to cooking programs on TV and the internet, the effects of Granny’s tutelage remain. They earned me my internet handle from Bill.

I still believe in bacon grease, so much so that my kiddo once gave me a t-shirt that said “Praise the Lard” for Christmas. That said, I was delighted to discover as an adult that vegetables don’t have to be cooked to bacon-flavored mush in a sauce pan. These days, my go-to method is to toss veggies in salt, pepper and olive oil and roast them on a sheet pan.

But it’s good to see Granny and the entire universe of country cooks get their due in the glossy pages of Bon Appétit!

***

I like this campaign advice from Josh Marshall at TPM on how Dems can keep Trump’s felony convictions front and center from now to November:

The way to constantly inject Trump’s felony conviction into the campaign, other than remembering that “convicted felon” is now his first name, is to simply make his pathetic whining, excuses and demands for never-ending life mulligans the center of the campaign against him. He’s a disgrace but more than that an embarrassment. It won’t be hard because he’ll be making this claim non-stop through November, just a constant cue up for the same lethal mockery. It is the heart of his politics to always be jacking the conversation up to higher and higher levels of drama, even when the drama is his own menace, indeed especially when the drama is his own menace. That’s his power. What cuts him down is to zero in on the pathetic excuse-making and whining, a trait all of us associate with the most odious and pitiful people we’ve ever known. And let that pull the disgrace of his many crimes and prosecutions along with it.

Yes! It won’t matter to the cultists, but they aren’t the target audience here. Normal people tend to find whiny jerks off-putting. Let’s use that!

h/t for the photo Subaru Dianne

I’m sure Hillary Clinton grieves for our country and the terrible turn it took in 2015, and for the road we have been on since.  How could she not?  At the same time, she is tough enough and strong enough to have embodied the expression that living well is the best revenge.

So I’d say that a little bit of gloating is now in order!

I can’t typically look at photos of the Dumpster, and you have probably noticed that I tend to not post photos of the disgusting creature, but this one doesn’t bother me!  Hope you feel the same.

He is the monster who stalked her on the debate stage, so it brings me great pleasure to see him depicted as the monster he is.  Hoping he will literally be powerless soon.  He is melting like the wicked witch, I think, just more slowly.
