Cold Grey Dawn Open Thread: The Secret Service Is Not Impressed By the RNC

by Anne Laurie| May 11, 20243:59 am| 69 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Republicans in Disarray!, Schadenfreude

NEW: In a tense meeting Thursday, Secret Service officials told GOP leaders they were not moving protesters farther from convention arena — as GOP is urging— and were not granting GOP a meeting with the agency’s director. Now, a pressure campaign is on. https://t.co/fA6jnU0pEs

— Josh Dawsey (@jdawsey1) May 10, 2024

The RNC demanded to Speak to the Manager, and the manager told them to cry harder… Yes, I originally posted about this a few days ago, but the latest schadenfreude is too tasty not to share. Per the Washington Post, “GOP escalates fight with Secret Service over convention protesters”:

Top Republican Party officials are escalating their fight with the Secret Service over the party’s convention in Milwaukee in July, demanding that the agency expand the security perimeter of the event so that protesters can be moved farther away from the arena where the main events will be held.

A cadre of senior GOP officials had a lengthy argument with Secret Service officials in Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon, according to three people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private meeting. The Republicans repeatedly pushed the agency to widen the perimeter so that a prominent city park about a quarter-mile from the arena could not be used by the city for a designated protest zone. The Republicans also again demanded a meeting with the head of the Secret Service to no avail, the people familiar with the meeting said.

The Secret Service officials — which included two senior officers — told the Republican National Committee that its director was not inclined to meet with them and that the agency was not planning to expand the perimeter to include the park, according to a person with direct knowledge of the meeting. That infuriated party officials.

Republican Party officials are now encouraging other top lawmakers to weigh in, with just two months before the convention…

The plan is being “overseen by an executive steering committee made up of Secret Service personnel on the ground, as well as representatives from other federal, state, and local agencies, who have the greatest understanding of the host city and the expected security environment for the event,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, said in a statement Friday afternoon. “The development of the security plan is based on security considerations, including risk and threat assessments, and is not a political matter.”…

show full post on front page

The RNC fight centers on Pere Lafayette Park in downtown Milwaukee, where the city plans to stage a “First Amendment Zone” for protesters to gather. Republican officials say the park’s location means thousands of convention attendees will have to pass protesters while walking to the arena, which they say could lead to clashes and violence.

The city says that the park is the closest public park to the arena that is outside the Secret Service perimeter and that the city is legally expected to give protesters “sight and sound” to the venue. City officials also say they are facing criticism from others that the park is not close enough…

Arbitrarily moving the perimeter “without something to back it up” could lead to lawsuits, the officials argued.

“We have no information that there will be unrest related to that activity,” one Secret Service official said. Another official said most attendees of the convention would use buses, which would go through different checkpoints.

At the meeting, a Milwaukee police captain also said there were concerns within the community that Republican convention attendees might “terrorize Milwaukee citizens” and “harass minorities.”…

Over and over, Republican officials urged the Secret Service to reconsider. At the end of the meeting, one GOP official told the agency that he wanted all of the media to go through the one checkpoint by the protesters.

“Who does the messaging on the checkpoints?” he said. “I want to make sure the media sees it all.”

The Republicans argued that if clashes occur, they would be blamed and it would distract from the convention…

Jeff Fleming, a spokesman for Milwaukee, said the city “expects a well-behaved group of protesters from a variety of viewpoints.”

There was a popular, if possibly apocryphal, story about the 1976 SF Worldcon in Kansas City, held immediately after that year’s RNC convo. The Worldcon committee warned that sf fans ‘could get a little rowdy‘, and the head of security at the main hotel said, Are your people gonna throw a hooker out a second-floor window? Because that’s the Republican standard for ‘a little rowdy’…

War for Ukraine Day 807: Russia’s Invasion of Kharkiv Oblast Has Begun!

A quick housekeeping note: I just want to clarify that the reason we’ve put a temporary pause on starting the GoFundMe for Rosie has nothing to do with how Rosie is doing. It is not a sign that she’s not doing well. She is, in fact, doing very well. The systemic support the vet is doing along with the chemo is working well. She has a massive appetite, is active, is putting weight back on, wants attention. And the vet estimated that after just the first two treatments that Rosie is at 80% remission. Her lymph nodes have also shrunk back to normal size. She goes for the fourth treatment of the first cycle on Monday and then she has two weeks of recovery before she starts the second cycle. The stuff with the GoFundMe is just dotting the final “i”s and crossing the final “t”s to ensure I won’t have issues with my clearance. That’s it. We expect it’ll go back up by Monday or so.

Tatarigami and his team have a full battlespace assessment of the Russian invasion of Kharkiv Oblast, I’ll post the whole thing after the jump.

Russia began its invasion of Kharkiv Oblast early this morning. As I type this the only part of Ukraine with an air raid alert, other than Luhansk and Crimea as they always have air raid alerts, is Kharkiv.

The air raid alert in Kharkiv region has lasted continuously for 12.5 hours today.

It was announced at 9.03 am.

According to local blogs, this is the longest air raid alert in the region since the beginning of the full-scale war.

My native city. It’s so hard to see what Kharkiv is going through.

We are Adding More Forces to Kharkiv Directions, We Are Providing Everything Required to Protect Our Positions — Address by the President

10 May 2024 – 21:25

Dear Ukrainians!

Summary of this day.

The main topic is the Kharkiv region. Today, Russian troops tried to expand their operations against Ukraine. We understand the size of the occupier’s forces, we see their intentions. Our warriors, our artillery, our drones are retaliating against the occupier. I am grateful to each of our soldiers, each sergeant, each officer who are defending our positions in exactly the way it is necessary. We are adding more forces to Kharkiv directions. Both along our state border and along the entire front line, we will invariably destroy the occupier in a way that will disrupt any Russian offensive intentions. Today, the Commander-in-Chief reported to me in the morning and in the evening, and I constantly keep in touch with the Minister of Defense — we are providing everything required to protect our positions. It all depends on the resilience of our warriors, and everyone who is holding their positions now is holding the positions of the entire Ukraine. It is important that our partners support our warriors and Ukrainian resilience with timely supplies. I mean truly timely. The really helpful package is the weapons brought to Ukraine, not just the announcement of the package. I thank every leader who looks at the situation this way.

Therefore, the second thing is our international work. Today, we have a new decision on American support, President Biden’s decision. It includes artillery, anti-tank weapons, vehicles and air defense. This is exactly what we need. Thank you. We are working on logistics to ensure that all the weapons prove their worth at the front as soon as possible. Today I had a great conversation with the President of Slovakia, who was on her visit to Ukraine. We talked about defense cooperation and about the political results we need to achieve next month in our relations with the European Union. It’s time for the actual opening of negotiations, and Ukraine as well as everyone in Europe needs this strategic message. I also had several telephone conversations — no matter what, we are preparing the Peace Summit, we are preparing a platform for the world majority to be able to force Russia into peace. Today I personally invited the President of Argentina, the Prime Minister of Iceland, and the Ecumenical Patriarch to the Summit. I am grateful to each of them for their desire to bring international law back to full effect. We will continue to be equally active — all the continents, all the countries’ views should be represented at the Peace Summit.

And the third. I had a very detailed, long meeting today with the team preparing the Summit from the Ukrainian side. The organization of the Summit is already elaborated. We still have tasks to accomplish — so that every leader can demonstrate their effectiveness for the sake of common interests. We are sure it will happen. And this is exactly what we have to realize now — Russia is trying to disrupt it. The more meaningful the Summit is, the closer peace will be. Obviously, Putin does not want this. Obviously, he will continue trying to disrupt our efforts, both by offensive attempts and by attempts to undermine our agreements with other leaders.

We must prevent this. We have to do everything we can for this.

I thank everyone who helps!

Glory to all our warriors!

Glory to Ukraine!

On April 9th, Mrs Zinaida was brought to Mechnykov hospital in Dnipro in a coma. She was under a Russian missile attack in Kostiantynivka and had a shrapnel wound to her head. Mrs Zinaida’s face and limbs were black from thermal burns, and she had multiple lacerations from missile fragments.

Her daughter, grandson and neighbors were all killed by the Russian missile.

She spent 16 days in a coma. Now Mrs Zinaida is conscious – thanks to her angel doctor Valeriia Labunets.

Dr. Labunets has worked in the septic intensive care unit for 10 years. Her father is defending Ukraine on the frontlines. Dr. Labunets spent dozens of nights with Mrs Zinaida, saving her life. They understand each other without words now.

Recently, Mrs Zinaida managed to write “I want to go home” on a piece of paper. But her home was also destroyed by the Russian missile.

Mrs Tamara is 81. She consistently donates to Ukrainian Defenders even though she doesn’t have a lot of money.

Ukrainian Defense Intelligence sent her a personal award, as well as a video message by Kyrylo Budanov himself.

“When I receive pension, first of all, I donate for drones, then I buy medicine, and the rest of the money – for treats,” says Mrs Tamara.

She shared that when a Russian ship was sunk by Ukraine on her birthday, it was the best gift she has ever received.

Wishing Mrs Tamara good health and lots of strength.

The Defense Forces of Ukraine are defending our strongholds in the Kharkiv region.
Over the past day, the enemy used guided aerial bombs to carry out airstrikes in the Vovchansk direction.
With the beginning of the night, the russian occupiers increased the fire pressure on first line of our defense with the support of artillery.
At approximately 5 am, there was an attempt by the enemy to break through our defense line using armored vehicles.
As of now, these attacks have been repelled; battles of varying intensity continue.
Reserve units have been deployed to strengthen the defense in this area of the front. The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue to hold back the enemy’s offensive.
We are grateful to every soldier, sergeant and officer who displayed the necessary fortitude and bravery to defend our positions.

Kharkiv:

Russian forces launched an attack overnight on Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region. The Defense Ministry said Russian units tried to break through Ukrainian lines across the border after artillery and guided aerial bomb strikes around Vovchansk. Reserves were sent in. Russia wants to create a “sanitary” or buffer zone near its border to prevent attacks and incursions on its soil. But also Ukrainian officials have said that Moscow still has eyes on Kharkiv, which it continues to pound daily with bombs and rockets, and is looking to launch a larger offensive in the coming weeks or months. The Kremlin is of course also exploiting Ukraine’s shortage of weapons, ammo and troops.

Here’s all of Tatarigami’s battlespace assessment regarding the Russian invasion of Kharkiv Oblast. From the Threader App:

Overnight, Russian infantry, backed by armored vehicles, entered Kharkiv oblast from Belgorod area, using small tactical units. Frontelligence Insight had previously cautioned about this scenario. Here’s what we know about it🧵:

(Before proceeding, please like and share)Image

2/ The capture of border villages like Strilecha, Krasne, Pylne, and Borysivka isn’t unexpected. It’s an anticipated maneuver to divert Ukrainian resources from the main Russian offensive in Donbas. Considering manpower shortages, Ukraine will be forced to redeploy some personnelImage
3/ Many question how Russian forces crossed the border so quickly. The answer is simple — the border is a grey zone heavily surveilled and, hence doesn’t have defensive structures. Instead, the defensive lines are positioned deeper within Ukrainian territory.
4/ Manpower shortages compel Ukraine to avoid deploying large units along the border continuously, with fully stocked and ready for immediate-use artillery. Placing defenses directly on the border would result in Russian forces occupying vacated or sparsely manned trenches
5/Russians anticipate a significant social backlash, inducing panic and demands for resolution. This pressure aims to compel the redeployment of units from critical areas of Russian advances in Donbas. Meanwhile, Russian forces deploy infantry units incapable of deep strikes
6/ The situation is expected to evolve, with Russian forces deploying more units to penetrate additional border areas or to reinforce initial successes. With our estimate of their force equivalent to two Russian corps, they can sustain this operation.
7/ Thus far, Russian forces have not breached the main Ukrainian defenses. Given the time required for Ukrainian units to deploy to the area, it is premature to assess the overall success or failure of this incursion. We will continue to provide updates

Tweet 1:

Today, Russians began an attack on the Kharkiv region from the Russian side, crossing the state border of Ukraine. Deepstate about the situation in the region:

“In the area of Kharkiv region, hostilities by the enemy began

The fighting began with heavy shelling from various weapons of border settlements in the Kharkov region. Currently, shelling continues, in particular, in the area of the city of Vovchansk. EW and UAV systems are also actively used.

Russians is trying to enter and gain a foothold in a number of settlements along the border, in particular, in the villages of Strelecha-Krasne-Pylna-Borysivka. Attempts are also being made by Russians to attack in the settlements of Gatishche-Pletenivka. The main Russian forces are currently infantry with the support of a small amount of equipment. They do not dare to move beyond the above-mentioned settlements, perhaps the use of major forces is expected.

The available resources that the enemy has used at the moment will not be enough for a deep advance. Currently, the situation is such that Russians are destabilizing the border areas. But it is not known how many main forces they are ready to use for this maneuver.

Separately, we would like to mention the area of Sagittarius-Red-Pilna-Borysivka. In advance, Russians made attempts to saturate the personnel in the villages, in particular, in the village of Pylna, which we will write about in more detail separately. You can claim to repel all attacks, distort information, but the responsible persons who should have reacted to it from the first minutes are now thinking about what to do with it.

In the media, actions from the enemy were expected. Even more, units of the Defense Forces, which directly hold positions along the border, were waiting for them. Now everything is in their hands, and they are making maximum efforts to repulse the next Russian offensive actions. The task of the entire society is not to panic, but to help our fighters on the front lines. The civilian population in the border areas should not be fooled, but should listen to calls from local authorities, in particular, regarding evacuation.”

Today Kharkiv is defending against the invaders once again, I want to share what our Kharkiv team is doing, as sirens wail over their heads and ask you to donate to speed up their efforts.

We have delivered 2 excavators for Ukrainian defenders to dig trenches and build fortifications, but as expected, they need repairs, and we have to get 3 more.

I am currently fundraising with Liberty Ukraine Foundation to make sure that excavators are delivered asap.

I apologize for this format, but maybe it can help fundraising. I hate filming myself

And an assessment from the Carnegie Endowment’s Dara Massicot via the Thread Reader App:

Ukrainian officials say attacks on border areas in Kharkiv Oblast have begun. Is this the beginnings of a new front, limited incursion (“sanitary zone”), or harassment? Where does this lead? Threat= capability x intent, so let’s consider both below. 👇

Intent: Putin in March said he wanted a “sanitary zone” aka occupied buffer zone inside Kharkiv, in response to shelling or cross border raids from groups like RDK. /2

With the election behind him, Putin says Russia aims to set up a buffer zone inside UkraineRussian President Vladimir Putin says his country won’t relent in its invasion of Ukraine and has announced plans for a buffer zone to protect against long-range Ukrainian strikes and cross-border rai…https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-putin-e7102a4f4bedd9aef8a855a7aa977f9f
Intent: a few weeks ago, the MOD elevated the Russian group of forces from “Border Protection” to Operational Group North – making it equivalent to the other Operational Groups of Forces. /3Image
Within the last week, Gen Lapin was appointed the newly formed Operational Group North. (Lapin commanded the initial Group Center in the 2022 invasion) /4

Image

Ukrainian officials have been anticipating an attack on Kharkiv/Sumy for some time. /5

Ukraine says it repelled Russian bid to cross borderThe attempt came during an attack on a town in the northeastern Kharkiv region, says the military.https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c6pyv8q94g1o
Capability: I’ve said previously that for Russia to invade the entire oblast, I think 75,000-100,000 personnel is ballpark and vehicles , which isn’t in their grasp right now, nor do they have means to occupy a large city like Kharkiv. /5
What is required to establish a sanitary zone of ~30KM across Kharkiv oblast? For personnel requirements close to the border I would estimate around two combined arms armies worth, perhaps 30,000-40,000 personnel over time and associated armored vehicles. /6
Early reports (take with grain of salt) say the Air Force and UAVs are working first with infantry assaults. Operationally appropriate early phase decision, or lack of available armor? to be determined. /7

Next few days, important to watch for increased VKS/UAV/FPV activity to map out and engage UAF defenses, continued shelling. In a worst case scenario, it creates favorable conditions for armored vehicle commitment. /8
Or, Russia is light on equipment for this effort, and attacks with infantry and light vehicles. Either way, if they attack Kharkiv, it draws Russia’s reserves that otherwise could have been secondary reserves for their main objective, Donetsk, or elsewhere. /9
Where would these Russian forces come from? As far as I can tell, there haven’t been major reallocations from forces in occupied Ukraine, which implies this group would be created from reserves (inexperienced) or units that were withdrawn/regenerating (mixed) /10.
To know Russia’s goals here, it is key to locate units and resources allocated in border areas in Russia: where and how many are staged- or if there are not enough staged. Either way, Ukrainian forces are now being stretched a bit to cope with this at a difficult time./end

Unfortunately the delays from the House and Senate GOP obstruction, done in service of Trump’s ambitions and vindictiveness, combined with the poor legislative strategy and overall strategic timidity of the Biden nat-sec team means that far too many Ukrainians are going to die because this material didn’t get to Ukraine sometime between DEC 2023 and MAR 2024.

The Czech Republic handed over the first F-16 fighter simulator to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Air Force Commander Oleschuk said that it was received by one of the tactical aviation brigades.

The simulator is already being tested. He noted that Ukraine needs not only F-16s, but also a powerful educational and material base for young people, and therefore calls on its allies to join this initiative.

Operation Chrysalide is a secret undertaking organized by France to provide SCALP-EG air-launched land attack cruise missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine – Radio France Internationale.

According to the sources asked by RFI, the SCALP missiles that could be transferred to the Ukrainian forces are divided into two categories: the ones fully operational but soon to reach their end of service life, as well as the “cannibalized” ones — some of their components were removed to keep other SCALPs in the French forces in working order. The second group of missiles must undergo restoration at their home factories in Bourges, where one of facilities belonging to MBDA company is located.

Friday Evening Open Thread: Damn You, P-Bump!

This post is in: Elections 2024, Excellent Links

Posting things online is not actually more useful for winning elections than talking to voters. https://t.co/e2I1rmVJqh

— Philip Bump (@pbump) May 8, 2024

But seriously: Philip Bump, writing for the Washington Post, is always informative — “No, posting is not better political activism than talking to voters” [gift link]:

Matt Yglesias is one of the more popular voices on the pro-Biden internet. That’s his framing, not mine; his newsletter “Slow Boring” is targeted to centrist Democrats interested in the nuances of how policy can address the country’s problems or at least people who like to think that they are. To use another metric to establish his bona fides, Yglesias is at the level of a commentator who gets profiled in The Washington Post.

Because he has that influence, his offering Tuesday morning deserves a response. Not because it is too generous or insufficiently generous to President Biden as it attempts to explain to readers how they can best aid Biden’s reelection. Instead, it is because it offers a notably bad assessment of the relative values of posting stuff on the internet vs. talking to actual voters.

The post is titled “How to make a difference in the 2024 election” and offers advice to that effect.

“I think it’s actually true that two of the best things you can do to defeat the MAGA movement do, in fact, happen online: giving money intelligently and posting mindfully,” Yglesias wrote…

This is bad advice, regardless of who you want elected.

We should start by reviewing what political campaigns want to do. The short version is “get votes.” But peel off the top layer and you can see the complexity underneath. Campaigns don’t get votes by encouraging everyone to vote, just adults who are registered to do so. And they don’t want to spend time getting every registered voter to cast a ballot, only the ones they think — or know — will vote for their candidate.

That part alone is complicated. Campaigns conduct polls to get a sense of who generally supports their candidates. If they find, for example, that White women over 65 overwhelmingly do, then they are going to do their best to get those White women to vote. They will, at times, engage in efforts to ensure those women know where, when and how to cast a ballot.

If they learn that Hispanic men under 45 can be persuaded by a particular argument, on the other hand, they will try to make that argument to those men. That includes direct mail and television ads in places those voters will be watching, sure. But it also means reaching out directly — presenting the argument to specific Hispanic men in that age group and recording whether it was effective. By which I mean: Asking the voters if they’ll vote for their candidate and writing it down, so that those who are convinced can be reminded where, when and how to cast their ballots.

You can see the points where legwork is required. The more volunteers a campaign has, the more specific, registered White women it can ensure vote before or on Election Day by reminding them with phone calls or by knocking on their doors. The more volunteers, the better the campaign can talk to those Hispanic men in the relevant electoral district and then engage in that same get-out-the-vote messaging with the ones who have been persuaded…

And here I am… posting on the internet, yes. But whatever my personal efforts, Mr. Bump’s argument is worth reading in full. I don’t know if you can subscribe to his weekly How to Read This Chart newsletter if you’re not a WaPo subscriber, but I’d recommend it!

.It’s Day 11 of the actual trial! Day 15 if you include jury selection.

It looks like Michael Cohen will be testifying on Monday!

Best sources of live blogging that I have found. It looks like some of them are only live blogging for the “big” witnesses. We’ll see.

Josh Kovensky (TPM) live blogging (not up today)

Good morning from 100 Centre Street, where Donald Trump’s criminal trial is set to resume.

Stormy Daniels wrapped up her testimony yesterday, but it’s a cloudy—some might even say stormy—day in Manhattan.

Jr won't produce medical records to settle the question objectively, so we're left with claims that were self-serving at the time, but are now politically damaging. https://t.co/LVdjlwQviu

— Lindsay Beyerstein (@beyerstein) May 9, 2024

Mr. Charles P. Pierce, at Esquire — “We Are Very Sorry To Hear About RFK Jr.’s Brain Worm And Mercury Poisoning”:

The New York Times took a deep dive on Tuesday into the medical history of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., whose raison d’etre as a presidential candidate is primarily based on crazy-assed Do Your Own Research vaccine denialism and the fact that the two major candidates are older than he is and, therefore, not up to the job, cognitively. Judging from the Times story, RFKJ needs to find himself some new raisons d’etre tout suite.

Several doctors noticed a dark spot on the younger Mr. Kennedy’s brain scans and concluded that he had a tumor, he said in a 2012 deposition reviewed by The New York Times… [A] doctor at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital who had a different opinion: Mr. Kennedy, he believed, had a dead parasite in his head. The doctor believed that the abnormality seen on his scans “was caused by a worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died,” Mr. Kennedy said in the deposition.

Well, that sounds awful.

For decades, Mr. Kennedy suffered from atrial fibrillation, a common heartbeat abnormality that increases the risk of stroke or heart failure. He has been hospitalized at least four times for episodes, although in an interview with The Times this winter, he said he had not had an incident in more than a decade and believed the condition had disappeared. About the same time he learned of the parasite, he said, he was also diagnosed with mercury poisoning, most likely from ingesting too much fish containing the dangerous heavy metal, which can cause serious neurological issues. “I have cognitive problems, clearly,” he said in the 2012 deposition. “I have short-term memory loss, and I have longer-term memory loss that affects me.”

Mr. Kennedy said he was then subsisting on a diet heavy on predatory fish, notably tuna and perch, both known to have elevated mercury levels. In the interview with The Times, he said that he had experienced “severe brain fog” and had trouble retrieving words. Mr. Kennedy, an environmental lawyer who has railed against the dangers of mercury contamination in fish from coal-fired power plants, had his blood tested. He said the tests showed his mercury levels were 10 times what the Environmental Protection Agency considers safe.

Brainworms? Poisoned fish? Holy Lord, this poor bastard has a medical history that makes him sound like one of Magellan’s sailors. How did he avoid scurvy?…

His medical history is now a legitimate topic for political discussion because he chose to engage in long-distance diagnoses of the president. Every one of his verbal stumbles and every moment of public forgetfulness is going to be counted against his fitness for office because that’s the field on which he’s chosen to compete. Personally now, I think he should stop with the YouTube calisthenics and the TikTok iron-pumping and accept the fact that he’s not that much younger than the president is.

Brain Worms! - STOCKPILE

Rolling Stone did its own research, happily for the rest of us hypochondriacs:

… According to Dr. Michael Wilson, a neurology professor at the University of California, San Francisco’s Weill Institute for Neurosciences who specializes in infectious disease, the worms are typically contained in the cysts that form around them.

“That’s a dramatic way to put it,” Wilson says of Kennedy’s claim that the worm found in his brain ate away a pocket for itself to chill in. “It’s not that they’re chewing up the brain and causing extensive damage. They tend to just sit there in their cyst.”

“For reasons we don’t understand, oftentimes, the worm will just kind of live in its cyst for a number of years and not cause any symptoms,” Wilson adds. “No seizures, nothing. And then finally, the immune system will recognize that it’s there, and then it’ll attack it and kill it.”

Once the worm is dead, the remains will often calcify, leaving a small spot — often only millimeters long — that is visible on brain scans. But the most common forms of neurological parasites don’t tunnel through your brain like a prospector looking to strike gold…

RIP to RFK Jr's brain worms, died tragically from malnutrition.

if hannity thinks he needs to spend his time going after RFK, junworm, trump’s internals (or fox’s internals) may be a whole lot worse than we think

The biggest shakeup of the 2024 presidential election so far: RFK Jr. gets an endorsement from Kevin Spacey, adding to his roster of canceled celebrity supporters.

Has Trump run through all, or nearly all, of the possible female VPs?

Nikki Haley – that ship sailed when she continued to run against him.

Kari Lake – that ship sailed when she got too crazy for the crazies.

Katie Britt – that ship sailed when her State of the Union response went up in flames.

Marge – that ship sailed at whatever point Trump no longer found the space laser lady useful.

Kristi Noem – that ship sailed this week, thank goodness!

Ships I wish would sail:

Sarah Huckabee Sanders – lectern-gate seems to have fallen off the map

Elise Stefanik – I think she’s too frumpy for Trump, but she’s ambitious, I’ll say that for her.

Republicans have a deep bench of awful.

Totally open thread.
