The Boat Rocker

Mr. Buchanan, who has helped found three community boathouses, works with organizations that advocate clean water and recreational use of New York Harbor.Credit…Victor J. Blue for The New York Times

In the late 1990s, Rob Buchanan, a former Princeton rower, had an inspiring encounter with a man named Mike Davis, who built replicas of the boat George Washington used to clear troops from Brooklyn during the Battle of Long Island. Mr. Davis, who died in 2008, had been on a mission to open up the city’s waterways to recreational use. Mr. Buchanan immediately felt a calling.

“This idea of the harbor as public space really resonated with me,” he said.

Over the years, he devoted himself to making access to the city’s coastline more equitable, an ambition that has intensified as luxury development has made waterfront access more elusive. He has helped found three community boathouses (one in Manhattan and two in Brooklyn), where volunteers provide free rowing and kayaking sessions. He is also the steering committee coordinator of the NYC Water Trail Association, which advocates clean water and safe boating and helped create the Citizens Water Quality Testing Program to check pollution levels in the harbor.

This year, he began lobbying the city to build a waterfront education center in Sunset Park, which would include work force training for maritime businesses. He joined Rocking the Boat, a nonprofit based in the South Bronx, where he directs programming and teaches boat building to middle schoolers from the neighborhood so that they can feel, as he put it, that “this is our harbor and our estuary,” and that they live in a city that belongs to everyone.

Independence is gained by the brave – address by the President of Ukraine

13 January 2024 – 19:29

I wish you good health, dear Ukrainians!

Today, I had several international meetings. First, via a video link with the leaders of the Bulgarian parliamentary coalition. Leading political forces. Our relations. Our common security – for everyone in Europe. It was a good and meaningful conversation. I am grateful for the understanding – the understanding that Russian aggression is a threat to the happiness and prosperity of all European nations.

I also had a meeting today with the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of France. It is very symbolic that the minister’s first visit is to Ukraine and precisely at a time when Russia is trying various ways to increase strikes on Ukraine and bypass our air defense. I am grateful to all countries and, in particular, France, for substantial strengthening our air shield, for unwavering support on the battlefield for our soldiers, and assistance to our people.

Today, we discussed our defense needs, including joint production of drones, artillery, and further strengthening of air defense. I briefed him on the progress regarding the Peace Formula. I am thankful to France for its active role in this global effort. We are already preparing for the forum in Davos, presenting our position and joint opportunities for everyone in the world who strives to leave a world of stability and freedom for their children. Our values, not the madness of any dictator.

And, of course, gratitude to our soldiers. Today, I want to particularly commend the soldiers of our National Guard, who, along with all the Armed Forces and security units, courageously and steadfastly defend Ukrainian positions.

The 15th National Guard Brigade – Senior Soldier Valeriy Semenets and Junior Sergeant Serhiy Koval, warriors of the special operations unit. Thank you for your strength! The third Special Operations Brigade – Soldier Vitaliy Saschuk, Soldier Mykola Nahaichuk, Soldier Yuriy Kosiuta. The 14th Brigade – Junior Sergeant Volodymyr Oliynyk, Senior Sergeant Vasyl Cherniuiuk. Thank you, guys!

I also want to commend the warriors of the National Guard’s Omega special operations center Omega, especially the guys from the first unit who effectively carry out tasks on the Avdiivka direction, as well as all the warriors of the third Omega unit who fight on the Melitopol direction, reinforcing the units of the Armed Forces. Thank you for destroying the enemy, guys! I thank all your comrades, everyone who knows that independence is not a reward. Independence is gained by the brave.

I thank everyone in Ukraine who is just like that! And everyone in the world who helps our state!

Glory to Ukraine!

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration “FMV” tasked the Norwegian ammunition manufacturer “Nammo” to ramp up the production of 155mm shells.

Jonas Lotsne, head of FMV’s operational area Army Materiel:

“We are now taking the next important step to accelerate investments in the production capacity of the industry. In this way, we shorten delivery times, increase the opportunity to support Ukraine and at the same time strengthen the security of supply regarding artillery ammunition in Sweden and the Nordics in the long term.”

Here’s Euan MacDonald’s thread on the air alerts and Russian bombardment from the Thread Reader App:

Spoke too soon! This on Telegram: “🚀 Kh-101/555/55-type cruise missiles launched from 6 Tu-95MSs. Estimated time of entry of missiles into the airspace of Ukraine is 0600 – 0700.”
Current air alert status in Ukraine.Image
Air alert just started to sound in Kyiv city.
Air alerts spreading to west.

Preliminary reports that five Russian Tu-22 strategic bombers have taken off (they launch Kh-22 “shopping-mall buster” anti-ship missiles with 1-ton warheads).

Also expected: More threats of ballistic missile launches.Image

About 30 missiles incoming that were fired by the Russian Tu-95s over the Caspian earlier. Some already in UA airspace. Explosions heard in Kropyvnytskyi, missiles in Cherkasy airspace, now MiG-31Ks have taken off from Skaykovka air base, Tu-22s nearing firing positions.
Russians look to be making another attempt to overwhelm Ukraine’s sir defenses with a simultaneous attack using various types of weapons.

I don’t get the impression they’re using as many missiles as in the Dec. 29 or Jan. 2 attacks, however.

More launches of missiles in south- Kh-31R radar-seeking (2 missiles) towards Berislavsky District of Kherson Oblast.

Missiles over Cherkasy Oblast changed course to Poltava.

Explosions in Kremenchuk. Probably air defenses.

Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles fired at Dnipro, UA Air Force says.

Cruise missiles over Poltava have now changed course to Kyiv.

Three, maybe four Kinzhals fired at Dnipro. Explosions heard in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Dnipro city.
Kh-101/555 cruise missiles now in Kyiv Oblast airspace, approaching from east toward Bilotserkva district in direction of Berdychiv district, Zhytomyr Oblast.

Another Kinzhal launched: 4-5 launches so far.

Some cruise missiles already shot down.

Group of missiles-> Kyiv.

Cruise missiles heading across Zhytomyr Oblast (west of Kyiv) in direction of Starokostyantiniv (air base) Khmelnytskyi Oblast – favorite Russian target.

UA Air Force says Kinzhal fired at Kyiv.

Kinzhal at Kyiv may have been false target – nothing on radar just now. Enemy electronic warfare systems operating, probably.
Cruise missiles headed for Rivne- whole country on alert now. Cruise missiles look to have bypassed capital Kyiv and its very effective air defenses. All quiet in Kyiv just now, no sound of air defenses operating.Image
Six Russian Tu-22 strategic bombers are still in the air.

No Kh-22 missile launches yet, however.

Another two MiG-31Ks have taken off, so another two potential Kinzhal aeroballistic missile launches.

Khinzhal(s) fired at Dnipro again.

Two cruise missiles over Rivne Oblast changed course to Lutsk.

One Kinzhal fired at Kryviy Rih.

Cruise missile headed in direction of Chernihiv.

Another report of Kinzhals fired in direction of Kyiv, 2 Kinzhals now heading for Rivne.
Cruise missiles now in Volyn, Ternopil and Rivne oblast airspaces, Ternopil missiles heading for Lviv Oblast to west.

More Kinzhals incoming from north.

This Russian tactic is going to continue until the Russians are stopped. Stopping the Russians from doing this means providing Ukraine with the weapons systems, ammunition, and a steady resupply network for them in order to both defend against the attacks and to proactively stop them. To effectively defend against these attacks, Ukraine needs more air defense systems, more ammunition for them, and a steady resupply chain. To be proactive, to go on the attack to stop the Russians before they launch requires more aviation and land based offensive assets, sufficient quantities of ammunition, and a steady resupply chain. Putin’s strategy, of which this is a primary tactic, has two objectives. To first objective is to deplete Ukraine’s air defense before the US – as in the Biden administration figures out how to get a Ukrainian supplemental appropriation through the current GOP majority House – can get its act together and resupply Ukraine. The second is to terrorize and demoralize the Ukrainians. This won’t stop until Ukraine is given what it is needed to stop it. Putin is counting on that not happening.

I want to make it clear, the problem is with the House GOP majority caucus and the Senate minority GOP caucus. As in the former, including Speaker Johnson, has made it clear they’re not interested in providing further aid to Ukraine and the latter is divided and McConnell’s control has slipped as he decays and disintegrates before everyone’s eyes.

And you know what that means:

Russian occupied Crimea:

Business Insider has the details on two very competent female members of the Ukrainian partisan underground:

Ukrainian saboteurs who are alleged to have poisoned and killed 46 Russian soldiers are on the run in annexed Crimea after a shoot-out with police, a local report says.

Two young saboteurs who had poisoned members of the Russian military in Simferopol and Bakhchisarai fled when authorities attempted to detain them in Crimea, Telegram channel Kremlin Snuffbox said on Tuesday.

The police went to apprehend the female suspects at a private house in Yalta but were surprised to find them “well armed” and “well prepared,” the post said.

The saboteurs opened fire and fled the scene in a car, and authorities do not know their current whereabouts.

Three officers were killed and two were wounded in the shoot-out, a source in Russia’s Federal Security Service told the Telegram channel.

It was reported in December that members of a Ukrainian partisan group called Crimean Combat Seagulls poisoned and killed 24 Russian soldiers after lacing their vodka with arsenic and strychnine.

At the time, Snuffbox quoted unnamed sources as saying that “two nice girls” tricked the unit in Simferopol, Crimea, into drinking the vodka, per the Kyiv Post translation.

In another incident, saboteurs killed 18 and hospitalized 14 Russian personnel in Bakhchisarai, Crimea, by putting arsenic and rat poison in pies and beer, Kremlin Snuffbox previously reported.

Russian military personnel stationed in Crimea have been asked not to take any food or any drinks from strangers and to detain any suspicious young women who approach them to prevent further incidents of poisoning.

Business Insider could not independently verify the report.

There were also been reports of two mass poisonings of Russian troops in Mariupol in 2023.

Acts of sabotage by Ukrainian resistance and partisan groups are used to harass Russian soldiers in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula occupied by Russia since 2014, and other occupied territories, and supply intelligence for Ukrainian strikes on military installations.

I’d like to highlight this section:

Russian military personnel stationed in Crimea have been asked not to take any food or any drinks from strangers and to detain any suspicious young women who approach them to prevent further incidents of poisoning.

— Megan Howard (@megan_e_howard) January 12, 2024

Politico has a long Sunday-magazine piece on “How the Pros Think the Iowa Caucuses Will Shake Out”. (Spoiler: TFG will be the winner, but his organization has been nervous enough about the final totals that they’ve been putting a lot of effort & money in, over the last several weeks.) Comment from a local reporter concerning the weather:

… Pfannenstiel: I think we have to look at enthusiasm numbers, too. Donald Trump has the most enthusiastic, most locked in supporters, according to Des Moines Register polling, compared to Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. The people who want to caucus for Donald Trump really want to caucus for Donald Trump. And there’s less excitement for DeSantis and for Haley, and Iowans have thick skin but this is a really serious weather situation. The temperatures are going to be in dangerous territory for people to spend a lot of time outside. So if you’re looking at how well run are some of these precinct locations, are there long lines to get in? Are people going to show up to a place where the parking lots are not plowed? Part of this comes down to management of caucus night and how well the county parties in the precinct locations are able to prepare for the weather and to make sure that people can get in because there are a lot of barriers to participation to showing up and any additional thing could turn people away…

This is going to be the greatest mass die-off of Republicans since covid. https://t.co/fSq9YLxxmC

I attended the 1988 caucuses. I don't remember people complaining about the weather or perceiving that the cold kept people away.
Monday is going to be really bad and will certainly depress turnout. Especially since we've gotten a lot of snow this week that will be on the ground.

— Bleeding Heartland (@LauraRBelin) January 12, 2024

The absurdity that is the Iowa caucuses apparently is going to be redoubled this time around because Iowa is going to turn into Hoth world.https://t.co/4FLFjch4Bn

— Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) January 9, 2024

As of last Tuesday, from the Iowa Capital Dispatch:

Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said Monday he expects a “robust” turnout at the 2024 Iowa Caucuses, despite the first blast of winter bearing down on the state a week before the event.

However, Kaufmann said the weather could get in the way of breaking the 2016 record of 186,000 caucus participants. “Weather could prevent a record-breaking turnout …” but Iowa could still have a “great turnout,” he said…

Caucusgoers must be registered as Republicans to participate but they can register to vote at their caucus and Democrats and independents can change their registration on caucus night in order to qualify. The Iowa Democratic Party will also hold caucuses on Jan. 15, but presidential preference will be registered only by mail-in ballot.

Usually, both parties hold their caucuses on the same night. That changed this year when the Democratic National Committee stripped Iowa of its first-in-the-nation status.

Kaufmann threatened Democrats with prosecution if they attempt to vote in both the Republican and Democratic caucuses. He noted that Iowa now has a Republican attorney general, Brenna Bird.

“It is against the law, and she will prosecute, I believe,” if someone participates in the GOP caucus and also mails in a Democratic ballot, he said. “… If a Democrat attempts to do that, and participate in both, that’s against the law, and we’re going to be monitoring that very, very carefully.”…

Translation: Whatever bad things happen — up to & including caucus-goers having traffic accidents — will be blamed on the perfidious Democrat Party. Won’t *that* be a suprise!

Now DeSantis cancelling events. The start to the 2024 election is unfolding in an appropriate degree of chaos. pic.twitter.com/GffyTFzcOH

As of right now, Trump is still scheduled to hold one rally in Indianola, Iowa, on Sunday. The other three rallies in Sioux City, Atlantic and Cherokee have all been canceled and Trump will instead participate in a few tele-rallies.

Why national reporters have been less than sympathetic to the demise of Iowa’s hallowed caucus system:

An Iowa moment I’ll never forget: someone stole / grabbed my coat at Cruz’s 2016 victory party in the middle of a blizzard. Cherry on top? My rental car was missing an ice scraper. A credit card made a poor substitute in the freezing temps #neveragain

The Anti-Gentrifier

Debra Ack teaches her neighbors in Brooklyn about community land trusts as a tool to keep neighborhoods affordable.Credit…Jade Doskow for The New York Times

Debra Ack came to activism late in life, as a 62-year-old former administrative assistant who got involved in the newly formed East New York Community Land Trust. Three years later, as the special projects coordinator she has been instrumental in drawing political attention to a long-neglected neighborhood straddling patches of Brooklyn and Queens that is prone to flooding, mold infestations, overflowing septic systems and illegal trash dumping.

Equally significant has been her work educating her neighbors in East New York about community land trusts, which are relatively new to the city but have a long history in California. They battle rising housing costs and keep real estate out of the hands of predatory developers. These trusts buy land, then typically issue 99-year ground leases to homeowners who consent to sell the houses or buildings on the land back to the trust at a restricted price to ensure affordability over the long term.

“We want people to know how they can bring ownership back to their communities,” Ms. Ack said. The East New York Community Land Trust is expected to close on its first property in January — a 21-unit apartment building that has fallen into disrepair. With the help of money raised through donations and low-interest loans, Ms. Ack said, the trust will buy both the land and the building and then turn the building over to the tenants living there, who will eventually own their units as co-ops.

We shape a model of security agreements for our time – address of the President of Ukraine

12 January 2024 – 20:09

I wish you good health, dear Ukrainians!

This day has already entered the history of our state: today, we have an agreement with the UK, a security agreement that we have been working on for a long time. It is the first bilateral agreement implementing the G7 basic understanding of security commitments for Ukraine, our defense, our security growth. Various aspects. Direct annual support. We have secured the financial support for this year – GBP 2.5 billion. And overall, during the ten-year agreement period there will be a substantial amount of support every year. It includes weapons. And support for our defense sector. Our intelligence. Sanctions against Russia. Work on Russian assets. Protection against Russian cyber attacks – everything related to modern technologies. It is indeed a very serious and modern agreement.

Many have heard about exemplary security agreements of the 20th century between the United States and Israel and some other similar agreements. Now, we have shaped such a model for our time – something that gives us confidence now, while we defend ourselves from Russian aggression, and establishes our strong security positions throughout the period until Ukraine joins NATO.

Our key security goal is the Alliance. And now, based on this agreement with the UK, we are working with other partners on bilateral agreements. Nearly 30 states have already joined the G7basic understanding. I am grateful to every state, every leader who is already working with us on security. To all those who will join us this year. And, of course, I thank the UK and personally Prime Minister Sunak for being first and your leadership.

Today in Kyiv, I met U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine’s Economic Recovery Penny Pritzker. We discussed in detail the steps needed for our resilience. We are eagerly awaiting the decision of Congress regarding further support for Ukraine – support that matters not only to us but also to every state whose stability depends on the strength of international law. We must win this battle, and I thank everyone in America – everyone who helps us preserve freedom.

We discussed preparations for the Davos summit with Ms. Pritzker. There will be an important meeting on the Peace Formula, many talks on the economic strengthening of Ukraine, our recovery, and our defense partnerships with leading countries and companies. This year should bring concrete results for Ukraine’s defense industry – and it will. Our arsenal will become stronger.

And, of course, I want to thank all our friends in the Baltic States – the three visits were very fruitful. Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia. There are decisions regarding weapons for our warriors, regarding economic support for Ukraine. Support for our relations with the European Union. Our movement towards NATO. I would also like to thank our partners for supporting our vision regarding Russian assets. Everything that Russia and its affiliates have brought into global jurisdictions must be identified, frozen, and later used to protect against Russian actions. We must make this a global rule: whoever destroys must pay the highest price for the ruins.

I thank everyone in the world who is helping! Thank you to all who fight and work for Ukraine! I am proud of our people! It is thanks to the strength of our people that world leaders take notice of Ukraine and want to see Ukraine as their partner. As their ally. We must all be worthy of the potential that Ukraine has.

Glory to Ukraine!

Today, the UK announced the largest package of defense aid to Ukraine since the beginning of the war valued at £ 2.5 billion.

The capabilities of this package includes additional equipment for air defense, anti-tank weapons, long-range missiles, and thousands of shells. The UK will also allocate £ 200 million for the production of various drones for the Ukrainian military: reconnaissance drones, long-range attack drones, as well as FPV drones.

Ukraine and the UK also signed a security agreement.

We are grateful to our British friends for their staunch support.
That’s an extremely important contribution to our victory!

A Bradley in Ukrainan hands brutally taking out a Russian T-90…

Western aid to the Ukrainan military gives excellent results and it can absolutely realistically bring this war to an end on the free world’s terms (which is – a long-lasting peace in Europe).

Significant quantities and timely deliveries are necessary. Self-imposed weakness, procrastination, and endless deliberations do not work.

Resisting and combating the evil does.

From The Kyiv Independent:

Russian forces shelled Sumy Oblast 260 times, firing at 12 communities along the border on Jan. 12, the Sumy Oblast Military Administration reported.

The Russian military fired on the communities of Bilopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Myropillia, Znob-Novhorodske, Svesy, Esman, Khotin, Krasnopillia, Druzhbiv, Seredyna-Buda, Shalyhyne, and Yunakivka. Throughout the day, Russian assailed the border communities with mortar and artillery attacks, while dropping mines onto two settlements.

No casualties or damage to civilian infrastructure were reported.

The town of Seredyna-Buda, with a pre-war population of about 7,000 residents, experienced the most intense attacks with 45 explosions recorded in the area. The community is located directly on the Ukraine-Russia border.

Shelling is a daily occurrence for the communities near Ukraine’s northeastern border with Russia. Residents in the region’s vulnerable border settlements experience multiple attacks per day.

Here’s some good news about the preservation of Ukrainian art and its history. First tweet/quote tweet from the thread, the rest from the Thread Reader App:

In 2022, russians destroyed a museum of famous Ukrainian genius Maria #Prymachenko. Fortunately, courageous local residents saved her paintings, some of which show the haunting realities of horrible war she personally endured in her time. #UkrainianArt https://t.co/f5c47lRuAa

❌She was uneducated and had no art education ✅ She studied for four years in the school, which was typical for peasants. She had no academic art education, but her mum taught her embroidery and 🇺🇦 traditional art. In Kyiv she graduated from Masters of Folk Art School.Image
❌She painted only naive animals and flowers. ✅ Her works were about different topics – the trauma of war, the cold war and nuclear terror, the Chornobyl catastrophe, alcohol addiction, Ukrainian songs, etc.
“May be cursed nuclear war”, 1989Image
❌She never left her village. ✅She studied in Kyiv where the Central Experimental Studios of Folk Art and then (after the Second World War) she visited the city for the openings of her exhibitions, and to visit friends (like Alla Horska, Lidia Orel, etc). But she never left 🇺🇦Image
❌She was rich because she was famous. ✅She had many exhibitions even abroad, but she lived very modestly in the village. Serhiy Parajanov remembers that Prymachenko asked to gift her cement because it was hard to find everything.Image
❌We know everything about her. ✅There are not so many researchers about her and her art. That’s why there are still so many myths about Prymachenko and she’s still considered as just a naive artist, but she was so much more than that.Image
❌Russian war on Ukraine doesn’t affect her heritage. ✅Unfortunately in February 2022 museum in Ivankiv where many of her works (as well as ceramics, and embroidery) were destroyed. About 15 works were saved by courageous museum workers. For example this “Blue Bull”, 1947Image
Maria Prymachenko Family Foundation wants to build a new museum in her native village Bolotnya (can you imagine there is still no museum of Prymachenko?). You can support them and buy clothes with her works – ukrainianbeasts.com

Some lucky book publisher who understands the importance of this and cares about Ukraine and its contribution to the art world should pick this up and put it out in English. https://t.co/F8vnYJAKyk

Forgot to tell you – I’m writing a book about Prymachenko ❤️✨

I’ve already signed a contract and started the research.

The book will be in Ukrainian, but if you are interested in English version – let me know.

You can see those submissions on Dave’s Redistricting App (DRA) here (Senate, Assembly).

Senate Democrats have also submitted maps and posted them on DRA. You can see those maps here (Senate, Assembly).

Gov. Tony Evers has also submitted maps and posted them on DRA. You can see those maps here (Senate, Assembly).

We know our readers here at The Recombobulation Area are very interested in redistricting and these maps, so please, share your thoughts, insights, and any additional information in the comments below in this thread.

NEW: A Dane County judge rules that the nonpartisan top elections official for Wisconsin can remain at her post, which comes after Republicans in the Legislature tried to oust her last year.

Local officials have stressed the need for stability in that job as we approach 2024.

Mom Briefly Deprived of Liberty

by Betty Cracker|  January 12, 20241:34 pm| 189 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Assholes, General Stupidity

Moms for Liberty has endured several months of scandalous bombshells about members staging keggers for kiddies, engaging in gross GOP power player three-ways, hobnobbing with Proud Boys, threatening opponents and quoting Hitler in newsletters. Now a Moms for Liberty-affiliated school board member in Tennessee resigned after getting busted for shoplifting at Target! The Daily Beast:

A Tennessee school board member who advocated for “parent choice” and was backed by a member of the right-wing group Moms for Liberty has resigned after being accused of swiping goods from Target.

Keri Leigh Blair, 43, was arrested and briefly tossed in jail on Jan. 5 for allegedly stealing $728.61 worth of stuff during seven shopping trips at a Target in Collierville, according to Fox 13.

Police said in an affidavit that Blair—who was released on $7,500 bond—would “skip scanning items at the self-checkout,” with amounts ranging from $63.38 to $140.49. All of the incidents took place between Nov. 25 and Dec. 20, 2023.

To paraphrase something I read about the self-checkout business model, theft at that point of purchase is just labor reclaiming stolen wages. But yeah, this Liberty Mom is another degenerate in a long list from that organization. When will these Moms for Liberty skanks stop grooming kids for a life of crime?
