Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is continuing to slowly do better. Though she is milking it a bit regarding her food. Tonight she got a freshly cooked hamburger. Last night she got a freshly cooked chicken breast. Thank you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, despite a nap yesterday, and about ten hours of sleep overnight, I’m still fried. I’m trying not to nod off as I type this, so I’m just going to run through the basics again so I can rack out. I’ll get to that other stuff tomorrow night.

It you’re wondering why Ukraine needs to retake their Russian occupied territories, it is not just to restore Ukraine’s legitimate, internationally recognized borders. It is also to push Russia’s military back as far as possible to deny the Russians the ability to attack Ukraine from closer range.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

We Expect the Necessary Increase in Pressure on Russia and More Support for Ukraine – Address by the President

26 October 2024 – 20:02

Dear Ukrainians!

Today, efforts were still underway to clear the rubble in Dnipro after the Russian strike. More than 20 people were injured by the strike – all have received the necessary assistance. But tragically, five people were killed, including a child. In Kyiv, a girl died as a result of a strike by “Shahed” drones – she was fourteen years old. My condolences to all families and loved ones.

Today, the town of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region was attacked. Four police officers were injured. There were also shellings in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, the Donetsk region was under attack, the south of our state: Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, our Kherson region.

Each of these days of war proves only that Moscow is determined to continue its aggression. They want nothing else there. That is why they are trying to increase their defense production, and specifically by circumventing sanctions. That is why they are increasingly engaging North Korea as an ally, and any day now their soldiers may appear on the battlefield fighting against Ukraine. Ukraine will be forced to actually fight against North Korea in Europe.

These are the conditions when the lack of partners’ stronger decisions in support of Ukraine only encourages Putin to invest further in terror. The world is capable of stopping the war from unfolding. Abstractions and words are not enough for this – concrete steps are needed.

We have provided all such steps in the Victory Plan. Something that will prevent further aggression by the culprits of the war. We expect the necessary increase in pressure on Russia. We expect more support for Ukraine. This will be only fair. And the time that passes while there are no decisions – unfortunately, this translates to constant Russian strikes and constant losses of our lives.

Next week will be the time of our very intense work with partners, first of all, to support our warriors, warriors at the front, and to implement our strategy of forcing Russia to end the war. We are preparing major signals of support.

Today, I want to highlight the efforts of our various people who work every day and night to defend Ukrainians from Russian strikes. Who provide assistance and always protect lives.

Dnipro: the entire staff of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Dnipro region, and especially Yevhen Panchuk, Dmytro Sauliak, Dmytro Luchka, Oleksandr Tykva. Also, National Police officers Oleksii Skakun and Karyna Aliieva. Thank you and your colleagues!

Sumy and the region: Oleksandr Matviienko, Vitalii Kaplun, Yurii Kostiuk – these are employees of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the region. Also, police officers: Serhii Zarutskyi and Hennadii Tereshchenko. Thank you, guys!

Kherson region: rescuers Oleh Zasymenko, Kostiantyn Naboka, Dmytro Volkov and Mykola Katruk. As well as police captains – both serving in KORD – Dmytro Hmyria and Andriy Kotliuba. Thank you!

Kharkiv region: the guys who work in groups to evacuate people from danger zones, employees of the State Emergency Service – Volodymyr Zatirka, Yevhen Afoniv, Serhii Kachanenko. And the National Police of Ukraine: Serhii Huskov and Uliian Pihal. Thank you for your round-the-clock work and real service to people and Ukraine.

I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine, who stands with our people; every warrior. I thank those who defend our state, hold our Ukrainian positions and destroy the occupier with all their might! We must definitely defend Ukraine.

Glory to Ukraine!

Georgia:

The atmosphere at Georgia’s crucial elections, viewed by both sides as an existential choice, is highly tense. The ruling GD party frames it as a choice between war and peace, while the opposition sees it as a decision between a pro-European or pro-Russian path 1/7 pic.twitter.com/npPuQr6UB5

The elections are existential not only for the country as a whole but for the opposition too. If the ruling party wins, the main anti-GD force, United National Movement, faces the threat of being banned and likely prosecuted 3/7

The pre-election polls are as polarised as the media landscape here. As a result, the opposition is convinced that the ruling party will not get more than 35%, while the GD itself is sure that it will with at least 60% percent. Confrontation seems almost inevitable 7/7

Polling stations have closed in Georgia.
Data from exit-polls is contradictory.
President Zourabichvili says the opposition has won, PM of Hungary Orban congratulates the “Georgian Dream” (current ruling party).

The situation in Georgia is rather tense.
According to polls, people’s moods are mixed and contradicting. While Georgians are afraid of a war with Russia (and the “Georgian Dreams” uses that to its advantage), most Georgians are pro-EU integration and, at the very least, do not want to lose their visa-free access to the Schengen Area.

Geopolitical stakes are very high:

If “Georgian Dream” remains in power, monumental changes in the Caucasus region cannot be ruled out.

The Kremlin has been hinting for quite some time that it can approve the return of South Ossetia and Abkhazia into Georgia with a special status and broad rights.
If that happens, Ivanishvili (head of “Georgian Dream”) will be able to announce the “restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity.”

Moscow is very keen on having a pro-Russian Georgian government. That would mean a key country in the Caucasus in the Russian sphere of influence. Crucial logistical routes go through there (e.g., the route of oil transport from the Caspian Sea into Turkey and Europe). It would also mean the possibility to restore railroad connection of Russia with Armenia, and then, all the way up to Iran. So that, in turn, would mean a direct land corridor between Russia and Iran.

Then, a transport corridor (North-South). Russia (North) – Caucasus – Iran – India – Sri Lanka. So, Georgia is a key element in Russia’s potential ability to influence India.

Tbilisi turning around would definitely influence Armenia’s geopolitical course – it will then be completely surrounded either by enemy countries (Azerbaijan and Turkey) or by Russia’s allies (Iran and Georgia).

But the most important consequence of pro-Russian powers winning in Georgia is that Russia would showcase itself as the only one able to guarantee security and territorial integrity of post-Soviet states. Even for those with whom it previously waged wars.

A lot of people fully realize how dangerous the victory of the “Russian world” would be, so the fight at the Georgian elections was intense. We will see how events will unfold.

We trust in the democratic Georgia. Waiting for official results.

📹: supporters of the ruling party in Georgia celebrate their victory

Things are not looking good in Georgia. Georgian Dream is an oligarch funded and run pro-Putin/pro-Russian political party. They have become increasingly unpopular and, in response, increasingly tyrannical. A chunk of Georgia has been occupied by Russia since August 2008. I have served with the Georgians in Iraq, but I honestly do not know what is going to happen if Georgian Dream remains in power, consolidates control, and cracks down further.

North Korea:

‘“We expect the troops will mainly be deployed in Kursk and consist of mainly special units from the North Korean army,” Brekelmans said, adding that the first deployment was a way for Russia to test the troops and to gauge international reaction.’ https://t.co/UMd2c4jl5U

The Cyprus Mail has the details:

Dutch intelligence has confirmed that Russia has deployed at least 1,500 troops from North Korea to fight in the Ukrainewar, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said Friday.

Moscow has not denied previous U.S. claims that North Korea had sent troops to Russia, a move that the West is casting as a significant escalation of the war.

“We expect the troops will mainly be deployed in Kursk and consist of mainly special units from the North Korean army,” Brekelmans said, adding that the first deployment was a way for Russia to test the troops and to gauge international reaction.

Kursk is a Russian city near the Ukrainian border where Ukrainian forces staged a major incursion in August.

The EU:

“Officials briefed on the discussions say there is no possibility EU militaries could match what the US is providing” to Ukraine. https://t.co/RAzjyuvgkh Other things being equal, yes. But in longer term, Europeans have agency on defence spending, industry, etc.

— Shashank Joshi (@shashj) October 25, 2024

From The Financial Times: (emphasis mine)

EU capitals are racing to draw up assessments of the bloc’s biggest vulnerabilities if Donald Trump is re-elected to the White House, as polls suggest the contest is tilting in the former president’s favour.

Senior EU officials are holding daily meetings to outline where a Trump presidency could cause the most pain for the bloc, said people familiar with the talks.

They said topics under discussion included how to withstand a barrage of trade tariffs, offset an end to US aid to Ukraine and maintain sanctions against Russia if Washington lifts its restrictions.

“Everyone is taking everything much more seriously,” said one senior EU diplomat. “We are trying to make sure we will not be taken by surprise.”

The preparations include formal talks between EU ambassadors and the staff of European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, as well as informal groups of senior EU diplomats considering possible strategies.

Trump has vowed to impose flat 10 per cent tariffs on all imports and is critical of US support for Kyiv and sceptical of Nato, which underpins Europe’s defence.

Polling suggests he is in a dead heat against vice-president Kamala Harris ahead of the November 5 election, and has overtaken his Democratic rival as the candidate Americans trust most with the economy, according to a Financial Times poll released this week.

“In my personal point of view, we will be in trouble. Deep trouble,” another EU diplomat said of a Trump win. “This disruptive element will be huge, and the unpredictability will be huge.”

The biggest short-term security concern of EU officials is how to continue support to Ukraine if Trump cuts off a flow of weapons that has played a vital role in helping Kyiv thwart Russia’s invasion.

The EU has provided more financial support to Ukraine than the US. But American weapons stockpiles and capabilities are far larger than European countries’. Officials briefed on the discussions say there is no possibility EU militaries could match what the US is providing.

Officials in the bloc are also deeply concerned that a Trump administration would lift sanctions on Russia. That would raise the question of how much economic pressure the EU could maintain on Moscow without US support, even if Japan, the UK and other allies kept sanctions in place.

Trump’s scepticism towards Nato has also exacerbated long-running fears about European reliance on US security guarantees.

“Right now we are arguing amongst ourselves about how to raise €100bn for defence and whether we really need to,” said another EU diplomat, referring to the bloc’s debate about a joint debt issue. “If Trump wins, we’ll instead be talking about €1tn and it won’t be optional.”

The EU talks to prepare for a possible Trump return to the White House have intensified over the past month. They follow von der Leyen’s decision this year to form a small in-house war room to prepare for the US election result, focused mainly on trade and security issues.

Ukraine’s air defense is doing yeoman’s work, but air defense is never perfect:

Russia launched a total of 11,466 missiles at Ukraine between Sept. 2022 and Sept. 2024: an average of over 23 missiles launched daily, per @CSIS. (Ukraine, interestingly, has intercepted 79.8 percent of those) https://t.co/vePyG60Npa

— Mike Eckel (@Mike_Eckel) October 25, 2024

From CSIS:

Ukraine is under siege from Russian firepower strikes and needs additional Western military aid, expanded sanctions against Moscow’s allies, intelligence support, and long-range strike authorization to defend its citizens.

From September 28, 2022, to September 1, 2024, Russia launched a total of 11,466 missiles. On average, 23.2 missiles were launched daily, with the median number of daily launches recorded at 17 missiles. This indicates that while the daily launch rate typically hovered around the mid-20s, there were numerous days with significantly higher activity. Notably, there were 17 days during the study period when missile launches exceeded 82 missiles in a single day. These high-intensity launch days correspond to specific military operations, strategic offensives, or responses to critical developments on the battlefield, reflecting moments of heightened conflict intensity.

This analysis is based on data compiled by Petro Ivaniuk. The dataset is available at Kaggle. CSIS has verified that the data aligns with the official numbers published by Ukraine’s Air Force social media accounts. The analysis in this paper covers the period from September 2022 to September 2024.

The data reveals that the daily intercept rate averaged 83.5 percent, with the median intercept rate reaching 88.5 percent. This high level of intercept efficiency suggests the deployment of advanced missile defense technologies capable of neutralizing a substantial portion of incoming threats on most days. When evaluating the overall intercept rate across the entire study period, it stands at 79.8 percent. This aggregated figure, which is the total intercept rate of the launched missiles, while slightly lower than the daily averages, demonstrates that Ukraine has been successful at defending its skies, both due to Western support and indigenous programs like the acoustic air defense network.

The analysis of missile deployment during the Russia-Ukraine war reveals a significant diversity in the types of missile models employed by Russian forces. The dataset encompasses 52 distinct missile model entries, which include both individual models and combinations of multiple models. This diversity underscores the multifaceted offensive capabilities and strategic flexibility maintained throughout the conflict. While the dataset lists 52 missile model entries, many entries represent combinations of multiple models. After deconstructing these combinations, there are 36 unique missile models identified. This diversity reflects an operational approach to firepower strikes of combining different models like long-range attack drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles to complicate the ability of Ukraine to defend its skies. Of note, many of these unique combinations were launched from different geographic sites further complicating air defense.

Heartening Read: Will Leich, ‘Made in America’

This post is in: Elections 2024, Excellent Links, Kamala Harris for President, Proud to Be A Democrat

????? pic.twitter.com/DgQmyl3D2L

— Kamala HQ (@KamalaHQ) October 24, 2024

Will Leich is a good and *sensible* man. This is from his (free to subscribe!) newsletter:

… [After the Biden / Trump debate] Everyone looked at Kamala Harris—in many ways for the first time. We knew who she was, of course, she was the Vice President, but those terrified by Trump, those flabbergasted by his political comeback, those desperate to keep him out of the White House and keep the Republic standing, had to look at her in entirely new, profoundly urgent way. She was no longer a person, or a politician: She was the last chance—the final stand.

Can you imagine that sort of pressure? An entire nation—a nation that had been skeptical of you for years—looking at you to save them? How would you handle it? Would you crumple? I think I would crumple. I think most people would.

It has been four months since that debate, and three months since Harris officially became the Democratic nominee for President. Because Covid-19 may have semi-permanently broken our understanding of time and its passing, it seems like longer than that. But in three months, with the entire planet staring at her, Harris not only risen to meet that moment, she has shown the precise qualities we should want in a President. She is better than we thought she was. She is the exact right person for the moment. She was standing in the right place, at the right time. But what she did next is what matters. I believe it to be one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen a public figure do. She went from being a Vice President with a mostly underwater approval rating to not just uniting her own party in a way it hadn’t been even under Biden but passing nearly every single test thrown at her under unfathomable pressure. And I think it’s why she’s going to be the next President of the United States…

I don’t want to turn this into hagiography: Harris has some stances I don’t agree with, which is what is supposed to happen because she is not a cult leader to be blindly followed, and I do not think she has been perfect, because she is a human being and no human beings are perfect. But I think, independent of the loathsomeness and imminent danger of her opponent, she will be a terrific President, during a time when we will very much need one…

show full post on front page

…There are people out there who want to blow up the entire system. I am not one of them. There are many reforms, major reforms, that need to be done, but I do not believe—nor should any reasonable person believe—that you can do these by just kicking all the chairs over and stomping fits. Harris made a commitment, early in her life, to try to work within the system, with all its limitations and systemic issues, to try to make a difference. I, as someone who tends to find bomb throwing more about self-aggrandizement than a dedication to the common good, believe this to be the correct approach. Kamala Harris is smart, skilled and rational. It’s a lot harder to find all three of those things in one person than you’d think. She has all three…

She has a relatable, fascinating background.
I highly recommend the “Frontline” documentary “The Choice 2024,” which tells the stories of both Trump and (especially) Harris in a way I had not seen done before…

The documentary tells the story of Harris’ fraught, if not entirely dysfunctional, relationship with her father, and the example set by her mother, a brilliant biologist whose primary lesson was to tell her children, when they were faced with hardship, not to look for someone else to solve their problem but to instead learn from it and be stronger for the experience. Harris grew up middle class—including, briefly, in Urbana, Illinois—in a loving but transient household, and her rise was a result of her personal drive and intelligence rather than having everything handed to her. She, like Obama, had to learn how to fit in across many, many different environs, places where she, as a woman and a Black person of Indian descent, was desperately outnumbered. She has worked shit jobs, she has had to emerge from situations in which she was powerless, she has had to learn how to connect with and get along with people from entirely different backgrounds from her own. There have been rooms where she is the most exceptional person in them; there have been rooms where she’s had to sit back and learn everything she could. She has gone through many phases in her life, and she has changed and evolved and grown. She has had to discover who she was in real time—like the rest of us…

She is a woman—and a strong voice for women. It has been strategically smart for Harris, I think, not to emphasize the historic nature of her candidacy, that she would be the first woman President. Part of this is surely learning the lesson of Hillary Clinton, who put that so much at the center of her campaign that it may have caused people to overlook all the other reasons she was running. But this should not change the fact that not only would having a woman President be massively historic, it would be obviously, self-evidently, good for the country. Not only would it at last correct a historic wrong, and not only change the world for millions of women and girls across the country and billions across the world, there is also increasingly overwhelming research that women are in fact more successful leaders than men are, in just about every way. (I am not sure this is something we necessarily need research on, I’m just staying the research is there, if you want it.) Harris may not be emphasizing how much it would mean to finally have a female President. That doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t. Because it would be a big, big deal.

She’s a sensible person. I think this is what I want more than anything else, out of my politicians, out of my friends, out of anyone I come across in my life. I want them to be sensible. Obama famously said a large part of his job was “don’t do stupid shit.” We are a strong country. We are a wealthy country. We are a good country. We just need to make it better as best we can, and not do stupid shit to make it worse…

I think this is a good country. I think it can be better. But I do not think it needs to be blown up. I want someone who believes in it, who is dedicated to it, who will do everything in her power to evoke positive change in ways that are rational, sensible and sane. I know that isn’t the most stirring oratory that I could give you. Others can surely do that. I can only come from where I am coming from. If you are a normal person who sincerely believes in this country and wants it to be a place that’s stable, to be place that messes up a lot but does ultimately bend toward justice, to be a place where children can be proud of and someday raise families of their own, you absolutely must vote for Kamala Harris. This is her moment. She has met it. The notion of seeing her in the Oval Office is a deeply inspiring one to imagine. I pray we get to see it.

I’m as twitchy as an angry cat’s tail today because Bill is visiting our flooded house by boat to check on things, and I dread hearing bad news upon his return, such as “oops, we didn’t jack the piano up enough and now it’s ruined.” Oh well. Not a thing in the world I can do about it, so I plan to practice self-care.

Got a jump on that yesterday evening when we visited a local tavern, where we had a fairly long and remarkably civil conversation with a Trump voter. It was the joint’s proprietor. He introduced the subject by telling us he’s waiting for the outcome of the election to decide whether to invest further in his establishment because he thinks Republicans are “better for business.”

I played dumb and asked questions, hoping he’d hear the contradictions in his answers. For example, when he complained about onerous regulations governing things like parking lot easements and RV hookups, I asked about the origin of the rules that were pissing him off. The county authorities put those regulations on the books. I asked if there were any Democrats on the commission. (The answer is no.) And so on.

I wasn’t under any illusions about converting a Trumper, and I didn’t. But following the Socratic method kept the conversation polite, and, more importantly, kept us from getting ejected and barred from the only pub in this neighborhood.

***

TV is a good distraction in these tumultuous times. I’m watching the Great British Baking Show and rooting for Slovakian immigrant Nelly because she is hilarious. I’m also binge-watching past seasons of BBQ Showdown. It’s fascinating in a trainwreck sense because the showrunners spring terrible surprises on contestants, like requiring them to incorporate raccoon meat into their dishes. Sweet tap-dancing Christ!

Netflix will roll out a new season of The Diplomat on October 31. We loved season 1, which ended with a cliffhanger. Hopefully Netflix will dump all the episodes on the platform at once rather than doling them out piecemeal.

Apple TV’s “Shrinking” is another show I’m enjoying. It’s about a grieving therapist (played by sexy beast Jason Segel) who goes rogue with his patients by getting involved in their lives. Harrison Ford plays Segel’s disapproving fellow therapist and mentor.

Sportsball on TV is another great distraction. Yesterday’s World Series opening game was amaze-balls! I don’t like either team but hate the Yankees above all others, so I loved that walk-off grand slam in the 10th.

Anyone got recs for other distractions to keep election/natural disaster jitters at bay? Open thread.

Credit where due: Per the Washington Post, “Harris attacks Trump at abortion rights rally in deep-red Texas” [gift link]:

Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Texas for a boisterous rally Friday where she ripped into former president Donald Trump over his opposition to abortion rights, seizing on an issue that has boosted Democratic victories in recent elections.

Harris, who was joined by pop superstar Beyoncé, focused on the state’s restrictive abortion laws to warn voters that as president, Trump would seek to end abortion across the country.

“The impact of Trump abortion bans has been devastating,” she said. “We see the horrific reality that women face every single day. … The stories are vivid. They are difficult to hear, and they are difficult to tell.”

Beyoncé did not perform at the rally, but she officially endorsed Harris in brief four-minute remarks. The pop star has long supported Democratic candidates and causes but has only sparingly made appearances on their behalf. Harris aides were eager to find a way for Harris to appear with Beyoncé, who subtly signaled her support for Harris’s candidacy by giving permission to the campaign to use her song, “Freedom,” as Harris’s walkout song in the summer.

“I’m not here as a celebrity. I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother,” Beyoncé told the crowd. “A mother who cares deeply about the world my children, and all of our children, live in. A world where we have the freedom to control our bodies.”

She added, “It’s time for America to sing a new song.”

The Harris campaign’s decision to hold a rally in deep-red Texas was unorthodox, given that the vice president has little chance of winning the state, but the Harris team had been looking for ways to make a splash beyond simply taking another trip to a battleground. And in doing so, they drew their biggest crowd of the cycle — roughly 30,000 people, officials said.

Harris’s appearance was also a way to elevate the issue of abortion rights in unfriendly territory. Texas was the first state to adopt a “heartbeat bill” outlawing abortions as early as six weeks, and it has become a symbol of hard-hitting antiabortion activism.

“Texas, you are ground zero in the fight for reproductive freedom,” Harris told the crowd…

Harris also criticized Ken Paxton, Texas’s Republican attorney general, for his recent lawsuit against a federal rule that shields the medical records of women who cross state lines to seek an abortion.

“On the one hand, Donald Trump won’t let anyone see his medical records … and on the other hand, they want to get their hands on yours.” Harris said. “Simply put, they are out of their minds.”

The enthusiastic crowd, in a city that rarely draws rallies by presidential candidates, repeatedly roared its approval. Some had arrived in the morning to begin lining up even though the rally began about 7:30 p.m., waiting hours in the hot Houston sun…

Democrats also hoped the rally would give a boost to Democratic Rep. Colin Allred, who is mounting an underdog campaign to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

In his remarks, Allred thanked Harris for coming to the state to spotlight the challenges facing Texas, but spent the rest of his speech roasting his opponent, prompting audience chants of “Beat Ted Cruz.” He assailed the senator for trying to overturn the 2020 election, fleeing to Mexico during a winter storm and supporting efforts to restrict abortion. He debuted a new attack line, saying Cruz was “too small for Texas.”…

Trump made his own stop in Texas on Friday, briefly visiting Austin where he reprised harsh language on immigration he had used in Arizona a day earlier.

“We’re like a garbage can for the rest of the world to dump the people that they don’t want,” Trump said. “Do you know what [other countries] save on that? Their mental institutions are being emptied out. Their jails and prisons are being emptied out.”…

Harris later criticized the “garbage can” comment, telling reporters that it was “just another example of how he really belittles our country.”

Two quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie seems to be coming out of her chemo reaction. Thank you for all the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, I’m going to just run the basics again as I begin to recover from a very, very long week.

Russia had strategic aviation up as of 11:40 PM local time in Ukraine. Air raid alerts have either been up or gone up and down over most of central, northern, and eastern Ukraine for hours. The alerts just went up – 8:05 PM EDT/3:05 PM local time in Ukraine – over all of eastern Ukraine. As of right now 1/2 of Ukraine is under air raid alert.

Russian attack on Ukraine continues: Missile strike in Dnipro hit hospital and residential building: 3 killed, 14 wounded; In Kyiv, 1 killed (14 or 15 year old girl), 4 wounded as drone debris strike on high-rise starts fire. In November, We Will Be Ready to Present the Final Document for the Second Peace Summit – Address by the President

25 October 2024 – 20:51

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

I have just held quite an extensive meeting with the military, intelligence, the NSDC Secretary, Government officials, and the Office, following a recent meeting with civil society representatives. At that meeting, we discussed the issues that currently limit Ukraine’s potential and how they can be resolved. In particular, I have given instructions to establish a format for a Technology Stаff – a special format to increase the modern capabilities of our Defense and Security Forces. The highest priority is, of course, drones. Including those capable of intercepting “Shahed” and other strike UAVs. In general, many purely military issues were discussed. I also instructed the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, together with the Security Service of Ukraine, to specifically address the issue of releasing civilians from Russian captivity. So far, the results in this regard are insufficient. We have also worked on some necessary legislative changes, and on sanctions policy, on our diplomacy. I will hear the results in a couple of weeks.

Today, I have also met with the new ambassadors of the partner states. I accepted their letters of credence. Representatives of Finland, Brazil, Ireland, Montenegro, Iceland and Lithuania. I spoke with each of them. We will be grateful for the joint work aimed at supporting our people, international law, and aimed at bringing a just peace closer.

Also today, a conference was held based on the Peace Formula point of one of the fundamental conditions for ending the war and preventing new aggression, namely the withdrawal of the occupying army from the territory of Ukraine. This is what is really necessary to restore justice. The conference was attended by representatives of more than 50 countries and international organizations. Quite a broad representation. Yesterday in Latvia, in parallel with the Summit of our Crimea Platform, a conference was held on another point of the Peace Formula, the one dedicated to the full implementation of the UN Charter, and more than 60 countries and international organizations took part in that conference. Starting from August and up to November, all the points of the Peace Formula are worked out within the framework of such conferences – all of them with good representation of the world. There have already been meetings on nuclear safety, energy, food, and environmental security – following the Kakhovka dam explosion and all the Russian strikes. In other words, all aspects of Russian aggression will be included in a separate document, which should become a substantive framework for the second Peace Summit. A step-by-step path to peace. Now, at the end of October, another very important conference will be held on humanitarian aspects – the release of prisoners and the return of deported children. After that, in November, we will be ready to present the final document for the second Peace Summit. I am grateful to everyone who helps. I thank our team, primarily the Office, for organizing this work with partners. Ukraine was the first to propose a comprehensive and realistic way to end the war – it happened more than two years ago – the Peace Formula. Based on the UN Charter. And we managed to unite representatives from all parts of the world to implement the Formula. We held the inaugural Peace Summit – a very successful one. One hundred countries and international organizations attended. We must do everything to ensure that the next Peace Summit is held, which will put an end to the war – a just end. One that will reliably guarantee the security of our state and people.

And one more thing.

Now, at all levels of our state, preparations for the coming months should be underway. The heating season. Winter. A lot of work in the energy sector – protecting facilities, working on system stability. Regions are preparing, communities are preparing. The army is preparing. And in addition to these systemic things, there are decisions that can be made directly to support people. I have instructed the Government to launch a new program as of December 1, which will be tangible for every family in Ukraine. E-support for all our people – adults, children, every family – in Ukraine. One thousand hryvnias per person – that’s several thousand hryvnias per family, and the money can be spent on Ukrainian goods and services, including utilities and electricity. Tickets, this is Ukrzaliznytsia. Ukrainian medicines. I have also given instructions that this money can be spent on Ukrainian books and cultural services. It can be donated to the military – to volunteers, for drones. The Cabinet of Ministers must work out all the details and present all this to the people. I expect this to happen soon. On December 1, people should have money.

Glory to Ukraine!

So? And?

A little while ago, we discussed this thing about anonymous U.S. officials fearing that permitting Ukraine to strike critical military targets in Russian territory could motivate the Kremlin for “horizontal escalation,” such as assisting Houthis in their attacks on global navigation.

So, did not crossing yet another “red line” help prevent what Russia is doing now?

Did the Kremlin appreciate the fact that Ukraine is not allowed to use Western weapons to strike Russian ammo depots, airbases, logistics, fuel storages etc?

Did yet another “red line” work to make Putin “de-escalate”? Last week, did that stop him from involving North Korea in war to exterminate Ukraine?

How many more times does Putin have to spit in the West’s face so that anonymous U.S. officials finally realize that the religion of “escalation management” does not work and that the Kremlin is and will always be doing anything and everything it can regardless of the West’s destructive self-restraint.

We keep wasting time, resources, and, most importantly, lives to delusional tactics of trying to reason with the maniac and wait for Jesus to come back and deliver us from Putin.

North Korea:

South Korean intelligence says Pyongyang might only have enough spare ammunition stocks to supply fascist Russia for another 3 months. Might that be connected to the decision to send combat troops to war in Ukraine? Anyway, Russia could be short of shells as early as January. https://t.co/R8r7j8qvw0

— Euan MacDonald (@Euan_MacDonald) October 25, 2024

Here’s the full text of the quoted tweet:

🤬🇰🇵 Only 30% of shells fired by the Kremlin’s forces recently were Russian-made. Of the remainder, 60% came from North Korea and 10% were Iranian-made, – Bloomberg

🚀 Pyongyang has sent approximately 8 million rounds since August last year, the analysis showed. About 100 Hwasong-11 missiles as well as Bulsae-4 anti-tank weapons have also been detected on the battlefield in Ukraine for the first time.

One of Russia’s useful idiots in the US:

We now know why right-wing influencer Black Insurrectionist deactivated his account last week.@AP tracked him down and realised not only is he white, he’s millions in debt, accused of defrauding business partners, and the FBI previously raided his home.https://t.co/4LrTbTDQdk https://t.co/Okf1ZRnwkj

— Shayan Sardarizadeh (@Shayan86) October 25, 2024

From The AP:

WASHINGTON (AP) — “Black Insurrectionist,” the anonymous social media persona behind some of the most widely circulated conspiracy theories about the 2024 election, can be traced to a man from upstate New York.

He’s also white.

With a profile photo of a Black soldier and the tagline “I FOLLOW BACK TRUE PATRIOTS,” the account on the platform X amassed more than 300,000 followers while posting dubious claims about Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Some were amplified by former President Donald Trump, his running mate Ohio Sen. JD Vance, and their Republican allies in Congress. The most salacious claims have come in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Last month, the account posted what Black Insurrectionist claimed was an affidavit from an ABC News employee, alleging Harris was given questions in advance of the network’s debate with Trump — which ABC News vigorously disputed. Trump approved, though, declaring, “I love the person.” More recently, Black Insurrectionist posted a baseless claim alleging inappropriate behavior between Walz and a student decades ago, a falsehood that U.S. intelligence officials said sprang from a Russian disinformation campaign.

The reach that the Black Insurrectionist account attained with assistance from Trump and his allies demonstrates the ease with which unverified information from dubious sources can metastasize online to shape public opinion. The speed and scale of disinformation has been an animating force in the presidential campaign, with the potential to affect the outcome in a close election.

The Black Insurrectionist account is linked directly to Jason G. Palmer, who has his own questionable backstory, starting with the fact that he isn’t Black, according to an Associated Press review of public records, open source data and interviews with a half-dozen people who interacted closely with Palmer over the past two decades. The records and personal accounts offer a portrait of an individual who has repeatedly been accused of defrauding business partners and lenders, has struggled with drug addiction and whose home was raided by the FBI over a decade ago. He also owes more than $6.7 million in back taxes to the state of New York.

“He’s far from African American,” said Kathleen Albano, who said her deceased husband was involved in a failed business venture with Palmer.

In emails and phone conversations, Palmer, 51, made a series of seemingly contradictory claims about his ties to the account, which was deactivated last week several hours after the AP first reached out to Palmer for comment.

He acknowledged in an email that he was involved with the account, but said that he did not create it. He also claimed to have owned it at one point before selling it in April or May to a person who he declined to identify.

“I do not know what is going on with this account,” Palmer wrote in an email last Thursday.

But in an interview on Tuesday he said he participated in making claims about Walz that were posted to the account this month. And he suggested that he worked as a “researcher” with a broader group.

“We did that with big people. National people,” Palmer said. “I have no comment on anything else regarding that.”

He also said that the account was primarily operated by a friend of his who is Black. He repeatedly declined to identify who that was, or put the AP in touch with the person.

A spokesperson for X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, did not respond to a request for comment.

The AP traced the account to Palmer based on posts made by Black Insurrectionist that included biographical details about living in upstate New York, a screenname and an email address. Those details cross-referenced with information available online that the AP tracked down with assistance from Gisela Pérez de Acha, an open source reporting specialist for the Human Rights Center at University of California, Berkley.

A video posted in March by Black Insurrectionist shows a computer screen displaying the docket of Trump’s election case in the Georgia. His initials “JP” are visible in an icon on the web browser’s toolbar. And Palmer’s email address can be seen in the corner of the screen, indicating that he used it to log into the state’s online court system.

The email address is linked to a phone number, according to opensource data provider Osint.Industries, that is listed for Palmer in New York court records. The same email is also linked to a Skype account with the username “jg palmrt,” according to the opensource data provider Epieos. Palmer’s middle initial is “G.”

Palmer also used similar iterations of the email address in the past, according to court records.

The suggestion that Palmer was involved with an account that spread falsehoods about the upcoming election was not a surprise to those who have had business and personal dealings with Palmer over the past two decades.

“He owes me a ton of money,” said Albano, whose late husband had a business relationship with Palmer. “He has a way of roping people in. I always had his number. I knew exactly who he was. But unfortunately my husband got caught up in a lot of those dealings.”

Albano said Palmer purchased a Webster, New York, home from her and her husband but failed to make payments. She said Palmer talked her husband into a investment venture to recoup the money, which also ended poorly.

“None of it materialized ever,” Albano said.

Unlike other Palmer business associates, Albano said the couple chose not to sue because “you can’t get blood from a stone.”

Palmer denied Albano’s account. He said that Albano’s late husband was his accountant and that he paid off a mortgage on the home. He denied that they ever had extensive business dealings.

In the mid-2000s, Palmer embarked on a real estate venture, buying up commercial properties in downtown Rochester. It ended with a string of lawsuits from creditors and former business partners, seeking tens of millions of dollars in unpaid loans and assets. Palmer blamed his troubles with the venture, in part, on an opioid addiction he had at the time.

Some former business partners alleged Palmer tried to seize control of buildings using documents with their signatures forged, according to court records.

In a 2020 case in Oneida County, New York, a forensic specialist conducted a detailed analysis of a document signing over an apartment complex to a company in which Palmer held a stake. The specialist concluded that “the evidence indicates that the signatures and the notary seal” were produced “by way of cut and paste or digital manipulation.”

Palmer said that it was actually his former business partner, William Mendick, who had defrauded him. The case, which was brought by Palmer, was dismissed in 2022.

Maureen Bass, a bankruptcy attorney in Rochester, said she wasn’t shocked by Palmer’s connection to an X account spreading conspiracy theories. Bass represented Wells Fargo in a commercial foreclosure case against Palmer and recalled that he once sent her old firm a lengthy email “manifesto” that accused local government officials of conspiring against him.

“It was rambling. He had been a victim of the ‘Axis of Evil.’ Politicians had done things to him, and had taken his assets,” Bass said. “So this doesn’t surprise me.”

What the @WSJ investigation inexplicably leaves out—while confirming Elon Musk is an unregistered foreign agent of Russia and in violation of the Logan Act—is that Musk purchased Twitter with financing from the children of sanctioned Russian oligarchs. Why wasn’t this mentioned?

https://dw.com/en/what-do-xs-alleged-ties-to-russian-oligarchs-mean-for-musk/a-70088598

From DW:

Court documents released last week by the US District Court for the Northern District of California shed light on shareholders and investors involved with Elon Musk’s X Holdings Corp, disclosing who helped to finance his $44 billion (€40 billion) acquisition of the platform formerly known as Twitter in 2022.

The filing, obtained by the Washington Post, lists around 100 entities and individuals, including prominent Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, but also individuals that reportedly have links to Russian oligarchs.

Lawyers for the nonprofit Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press filed a motion in July asking the court to unseal the records, on behalf of independent technology journalist Jacob Silverman.

On his website, Silverman wrote that, “I believe that people have a right to know who owns a company with such a prominent role in shaping public discourse, both in the United States and around the world.”

Ties to Russian oligarchs?

One of firms listed is 8VC, a venture capitalist company co-founded by Joe Lonsdale, co-founder of intelligence contractor and data analysis platform Palantir.

8VC has invested in US defense projects with Lonsdale arguing that China’s growing influence is behind his firm’s move to back military startups.

Speaking at an event in March, Lonsdale said China is “building really advanced things that they’re starting to compete with the US.”

“That became a very scary realization to us about 10 years ago so we went hard into defense,” he said.

On the fund’s website, Denis Aven and Jack Moshkovich pop up in the staff section — the sons of sanctioned Russian oligarchs Petr Aven and Vadim Moshkovich. The former is co-founder of Alfa-Bank, Russia’s largest private bank, and LetterOne Holdings investment company. He’s been sanctioned as part of the measures imposed on Russian individuals in the wake of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Moshkovich, meanwhile, made his fortune in the agro-industrial business with his Rusagro Group company. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine he was sanctioned by Western countries due to his alleged ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

There is nothing to suggest that the sanctioned fathers have any financial ties with 8VC. However, their sons’ roles are likely to come under further scrutiny, as the US government is becoming increasingly wary of foreign actors’ ties to the tech industry.

The National Counterintelligence and Security Center recently released a bulletin warning Silicon Valley startups about foreign players using investment deals to exploit sensitive data.

At the time of writing 8VC had not responded to DW’s request for comment.

Pokrovsk:

Mykola Leontovych, a Ukrainian composer, wrote the famous “Carol of the Bells” in Pokrovsk 120 years ago – a music heard in homes across Europe and America each Christmas. On January 23, 1921, a Soviet agent murdered him. Today, Russian forces are trying to erase Pokrovsk as well

“On the night of October 25, units of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in cooperation with other components of the Defense Forces, as part of the implementation of tasks to detect and eliminate the enemy’s anti-aircraft defenses, hit the Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile system and destroyed the target illumination and guidance radar station missiles 9S36 of the Buk-M2 air defense system.

The targets were located in the temporarily occupied territory of the Luhansk region, several dozens of kilometers from the front line.”

Putin, thrown off balance by Steve’s tremendous question, actually tells the truth about why he is waging a war against Ukraine. He essentially says he is lashing out at Ukraine because he felt he was slighted by the west. He course corrects to make it about national security. But that’s the truth. This is not about NATO. Putin felt slighted and is taking it out on Ukraine. He is saying so himself.

That’s enough for tonight.

Repub Venality Open Thread: ‘Black Insurrectionist’ Just Another White MAGAt

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Republican Venality, Republicans in Disarray!

NEW: Black Insurrectionist, the anonymous social media persona behind widely circulated election conspiracy theories, traces to a man from upstate NY.

He’s white.

He's also been accused of fraud, had his home raided by the FBI and owes millions in taxes. https://t.co/3rsOUD6Afa

So: The perfect exemplar of a True Trumpist ‘Patriot’!… Per the Associated Press, “The ‘Black Insurrectionist’ was actually white. The deception did not stop there”:

… With a profile photo of a Black soldier and the tagline “I FOLLOW BACK TRUE PATRIOTS,” the account on the platform X amassed more than 300,000 followers while posting dubious claims about Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov.

He also owes more than $6.7 million in back taxes to the state of New York…

In emails and phone conversations, Palmer, 51, made a series of seemingly contradictory claims about his ties to the account, which was deactivated last week several hours after the AP first reached out to Palmer for comment.

He acknowledged in an email that he was involved with the account, but said that he did not create it. He also claimed to have owned it at one point before selling it in April or May to a person who he declined to identify…

A spokesperson for X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, did not respond to a request for comment…

And of course I can’t find it now, but I remember at least one major media platform had an interview with the actual Black man whose image was stolen for the ‘Black Insurrectionist’ cheapfake YouTube video. I’d say that man had a good case to sue Jason Palmer, except (as one of Palmer’s other victims says in the article linked above) you can’t get blood from a stone.
