“A king is only a king if we bow down.” – Rev. William Barber

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

In after Baud. Damn.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

The way to stop violence is to stop manufacturing the hatred that fuels it.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

So very ready.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

This blog will pay for itself.

This really is a full service blog.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

War for Ukraine Day 855: The Aftermath of Last Night’s Bombardments

by Adam L Silverman|  June 27, 20249:29 pm| 16 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Painting by NEIVANMADE. It has a white background an in the center are Soldiers in green doing air defense by firing at incoming Russian missiles in the upper right. The missiles are red and yellow. In the upper left, written in green, is the text: "SAVE THE BRAVEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!" Below the Soldiers, also written in green, is "SUPPORT FOR KHARKIV"

Quick housekeeping notes. First, Rosie is still doing excellent. Thank you all for the good thoughts, well wishes, prayers, and donations.

Second, because of the debate this evening, I’m going to keep this short.

Here’s the accounting from last night’s bombardments.

Night air attack on Ukraine:

5 out of 6 missiles and all 23 Shahed drones targeting western Ukraine were downed. Only Kinzhal missile wasn’t intercepted. Russia keeps testing Ukrainian air defenses, exploiting any gaps. pic.twitter.com/XizQo2lmEO

Russia hit Kharkiv with a guided FAB-500 bomb for the first time. It’s twice as powerful as KAB-250s Russia bombards the city with daily. Two bombs were launched from Su-34 in Belgorod region, covering 65 km. Luckily, this one didn’t explode. pic.twitter.com/7gawZ7gxVM

Russian forces used the FAB-500 glide bomb, equipped with a correction module, for the first time in an attack on Kharkiv, according to Prosecutor Filchakov. Tallyho!

…and color me surprised, there’s no “MAJOR NUCLEAR ESCALATION” or “WORLD WAR III”.

What happens in reality is Ukraine fighting back and making Russia sustain losses and become less capable of continuing and escalating its war on Ukraine.

That’s the way a war of defense works, as opposite to the brain-dead “SURRENDER NOW, ALL KNEEL TO PUTIN” cult on X.

Last night in comments David The Establishment Koch asked:

Any thoughts on Assange.   Was this part of a below the surface exchange?

Second question first: Not that I’m aware of. He’s an Australian national and since they’re not holding any Americans, I have no idea who we’d be exchanging him for.

Overall, while I’m not a fan of the Espionage Act, but Assange was never a journalist and never an honest broker. He did significant damage to the US and our allies. I don’t know if five years in a British prison sufficient punishment. I do know that Assange is incorrigible and I fully expect he’ll get himself in trouble again in short order.

Well this happened:

A network of pro-Kremlin accounts on X pushed fake Fox News articles in the hours ahead of Thursday’s presidential debate, attempting to spread false narratives including one about former President Trump’s support in the business community. https://t.co/4ttmaC4Nho

Every European Nation that Shares Common European Values Should Be Part of the European Family – Speech of the President of Ukraine at the European Council Meeting

27 June 2024 – 18:00

Thank you, Charles, Mr. President!

Dear colleagues, dear Ursula!

I am grateful to you that during these very difficult years for all of us, for Europe, we have maintained unity and ensured that Europe is stronger. The world has seen Europe’s effectiveness – has seen our ability to find the right decision at the right time.

Dear friends!

The EU approved a negotiation framework for Ukraine. And negotiations on our country’s accession have already begun. Thank you very much for it. This is Europe’s historic choice. Thank you again. I am convinced that every European nation that shares common European values should be part of the European family. This is true for Ukraine, this is true for Moldova, for the peoples of the Balkans. I am sure Georgia’s moment will come. And I am sure that there will be decisions regarding Belarus, because it is also a European nation that should be in a united Europe in the future.

Now it will be right for us to move from decision to decision without wasting time. We have already held the first intergovernmental conference between Ukraine and the EU, and we hope that the next steps will not be delayed, including the official screening procedure. Ukraine is ready to go through all the necessary steps.

I would also like to thank you for the security agreements. Today, Charles Michel, Ursula von der Leyen and I signed the Joint Security Commitments with the EU; together with President Nausėda, I signed the security agreement between Ukraine and Lithuania, and together with Prime Minister Kallas – the security agreement between Ukraine and Estonia. And I invite everyone in Europe who is still on the sidelines of this security work to join us.

And one more thing that is important to mention.

In May, Putin tried to expand the war by launching a new offensive in the east of our country. Thanks to the bravery of our people and the decisions of you, of our partners, we stopped this Russian offensive. But this new Russian offensive proved that the existing pressure on Russia for the war is not enough. And so…

First, I wanted to mention military support.

Artillery, shells, and fulfillment of every promise is important not only in terms of protecting lives, but also to destroy the Russian illusion that they will achieve something by war. Funding is important – through the European Peace Facility, and on a bilateral basis, – funding that is timely. As well as logistics, so that each package that is announced comes to the battlefield as soon as possible.

Second, air shield and long-range capabilities.

We are managing to bring security back to Kharkiv, one of the largest cities in Ukraine, security from Russian missiles. This is due to the elimination of Russian missile launchers near our border – each of you knows how this became possible. Also, we must protect Kharkiv and every other city in Ukraine from Russian guided bombs. That is a big problem. Our long-range strikes and modern air defense are the key to stopping this terror. I thank each and every one of you who is helping to make this happen.

The third is Russian assets.

I am grateful for the decisions that provide Ukraine with financial resources from frozen Russian assets. It is fair that the assets of the terrorist state work to protect Ukraine suffering from Russian terror. And all the assets of the terrorist state should work to protect life, of course. We must find the right way to confiscate all these assets.

And now we see how the sanctions against Russian oligarchs started to be lifted. We must stop this and strengthen sanctions, because Putin’s regime rests on such money.

The fourth is energy. Closer to winter it really can be the first.

Putin wages an all-out-war against our energy sector. It is our duty to prevent Russia from setting a precedent for destroying the energy of an entire nation. If Russia succeeds, it will become part of military doctrines around the world. Energy is one of the foundations of normal human life. We do everything we can to restore the power generation and protect this generation. And we need a significant increase in electricity imports from the EU, as well as support with equipment and other resources to protect and restore our energy system.

And the fifth is diplomacy.

I thank all of you for participating in the Peace Summit, which was a clear success of our peacemaking efforts. We proved that the world can unite to restore the full effectiveness of the UN Charter and return peace to Ukraine. Nine more participants have signed the final Communiqué of the Summit, and we are continuing this work with more signatures to come. I also invite you to join the preparations of the second Peace Summit. We are now organizing groups that will work on developing specific action plans – to bring the just end of the war – reliably, honestly, and for a long time. We need as much joint effort as possible to achieve this.

Europe has proven that it can be efficient! I thank you for that. Thank you for your support!

I am grateful for the historic Belgian Presidency of the EU, and I wish the next one, the Hungarian Presidency, to be effective.

Glory to Ukraine!

Lithuania:

Thank you for your unwavering support and this crucial decision!
Together, we are stronger.

Israel:

https://t.co/RfJzgKGJTi

— Illia Ponomarenko 🇺🇦 (@IAPonomarenko) June 27, 2024

The Financial Times has the details:

The US, Israel and Ukraine are in talks to supply Kyiv with up to eight Patriot air defence systems, dramatically improving its ability to counter Russian air strikes.

While not finalised, the arrangement would likely involve the highly prized Patriot systems being sent first from Israel to the US, before being delivered to Ukraine.

The outlines of the deal, which would mark a shift in Israel’s relations with Moscow, have been discussed between ministers and senior officials of the three countries, according to five people briefed on the negotiations.

Israel said in April that it would begin retiring its eight Patriot batteries, which date back more than 30 years, and replacing them with more advanced systems.

But the batteries, which have been used in Israel’s current war with Hamas, have not yet been discontinued due to concerns that tensions with the Iran-backed Hizbollah militant group could erupt into a full-blown war.

If realised, such a transfer would represent a step change in Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. The country currently has at least four Patriot systems, supplied by both the US and Germany.

Ukraine has frequently requested that western allies supply it with air defence systems, in particular the US-made Patriots. Last week, the US announced that it was pausing the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles to other nations to prioritise supply to Ukraine.

Israel has been cautious about taking sides over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine given the clout Moscow holds in Syria, where the Israeli air force often acts against Iranian proxies.

While there’s more at the link, this is the key paragraph:

But the batteries, which have been used in Israel’s current war with Hamas, have not yet been discontinued due to concerns that tensions with the Iran-backed Hizbollah militant group could erupt into a full-blown war.

And the reason it’s the key paragraph is there is no way that Israel is going to give up any weapons systems, let alone Patriots, as long they are 1) still fighting in Gaza and 2) considering going into Lebanon to fight Hezbullah.

Worker Power Leadership School Angel Match (and Open Thread)

by WaterGirl|  June 27, 202412:01 pm| 30 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Political Action, Political Fundraising, Targeted Political Fundraising 2023-24

In case you missed last night’s thread, we are in the process of raising $15,000 to send one young person to Leadership School to learn about organizing and how to lead a political team.  We don’t know if the person who will be funded by our $15,000 will be the actual leader for OUR TEAM in the Fall – the 10-person team we will fund again for 3 weeks, as we did in 2022 – but our team leader will be one of the people who attended Leadership School.

It’s Up to Us, Next Up: Quick Stop In Arizona for Summer School (and returning again in September)

We completed the first Angel match overnight, and that Angel match is already in the thermometer.  Friend of the blog Andrew wrote last night to offer a match, so we are starring a brand-new $1,000 Angel match this morning.  The usual terms – matching up to $100 per person.  No external match for the Leadership School, so these will be 2x donations.

As I said last night, I am so tired of waiting on this corrupt Supreme Court.  I am tried of waiting for Cannon to be held accountable and for the DC trial to resume.  I am fucking tired of the assaults on the basic rights of women.  Waiting, waiting, waiting.  But this we can do now, and we don’t have to wait on anyone else.

Donate

Worker Power Leadership School

We are raising funds to send one person to Leadership School. Our $15,000 will cover housing + training for a campaign leader who will lead a canvass team of 10 to knock on over 25,000 doors during this election year!

We all know that the 2024 election on November 5th will decide whether our Democracy as we know it survives, and the swing state of Arizona is a major path to victory for the Presidential, House, and Senate races.

In the coming weeks, Worker Power will run once again the largest field operation in Arizona and knock on over 1.1 million doors! They will hire over 500 canvassers to deliver the White House, secure our Democratic U.S. Senate seat, and flip Congressional Districts 1 and 6, giving us a path to control of the House!

To keep Arizona blue, they created the Worker Power Leadership School, a free, month-long, in-residence training program educating the next generation of organizers to run strong field campaigns.

Building on the successes of 2022, when they secured the Governorship, Secretary of State, and Attorney General’s office in Arizona and the U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, the Worker Power Leadership School will offer 150 hours of campaign training to 24 organizers, guided by some of the nation’s top strategists.

Following their graduation in August, these 24 organizers will lead a team of 10 canvassers who will help knock on over 1.1 million doors!

Is this effort something you guys can get behind?  I am so fucking tired of waiting for the corrupt Supreme Court.  I am so fucking tired of waiting for Cannon to  make a move that will allow the 11th Circuit to slap her down.  We are not without agency, even when it feels like we are in limbo.   Let’s do this!

Debating a Chaos Agent Leads to Chaos

Josh Marshall often makes the point that understanding pro wrestling is a key to understanding Trump.  This is especially true for events like tonight’s debate.  I stopped watching pro wresting as a kid, so I’m not planning to watch the debate to see just which rules Trump breaks and what new batshit ideas he trots out.  I’ll be more interested in the takes and vibes, since those will fan out into social media and influence the undecided / sometimes voters who will decide this election mainly by their choice of whether to stay home or come out and vote.

The Biden campaign’s decision to push Trump into an early debate was probably driven by a combination of wanting to put Trump’s decline on stage, to show that Biden is still sharp, and to get people focused on the contrast between the actual two candidates rather than whatever bullshit is circulating on Grandma’s Facebook page.  I mean, it’s worth a try.   They were smart in ignoring the debate commission, thereby getting rid of some of the stupid stuff the commission insists on, like having a live audience.  The ability to mute mics is also a good thing.  Jake Tapper and Dana Bash have the ability to be decent moderators, but I’ll bet a shiny quarter that the ref working efforts of Trump’s army of ass lickers will keep the moderators from turning in a Kyle Clark debate performance.

Anyway, my expectations are some Trump “norm busting” (read:  rude asshole behavior), a decent performance by Biden where any mis-step he makes will be amplified on right-wing media, and an event that will be quickly forgotten by most unengaged voters, if they even pay attention in the first place.  Biden has always been a just OK debater, which is fine — Obama wasn’t that great either.    As Steve M pointed out, it would be great if Democrats started talking about the 140 officers injured during Jan 6, and maybe there will be a couple of Jan 6 questions that at least make Trump struggle a bit.  Otherwise, he’ll shit talk his way through the thing, as he always does.

We know what Trump’s like as President.  We know what Biden’s like as President.  The notion that 90 minutes (minus commercials, bleagh) will change any minds is pretty far fetched when you think about it.

Supreme Court Decisions Again Today at 10 am ET (June 26 Edition) & Open Thread

If you want to follow along on SCOTUSblog.

I’ll copy the short summaries as each one shows up on their website.

Here we go!

The court grants a group of states’ request to put the EPA’s “good neighbor plan” on hold in Ohio v. Environmental Protection Agency. The rule was issued to reduce air pollution from power plants and other industrial facilities based on the EPA’s interpretation of a provision of the Clean Air Act, which requires “upwind” states to reduce emissions that affect the air quality in “downwind” states.

Opinion:  5-4  (ugh)

The court rules in Harrington v. Purdue Pharma L.P. that the bankruptcy code does not authorize a multi-billion-dollar bankruptcy plan for Purdue Pharma, the maker of the highly addictive opioid painkiller OxyContin, that would release members of the Sackler family, which owned the company but did not declare bankruptcy, from any future liability for claims against them.

Opinion:  5-4  (ugh)

In SEC v. Jarkesy, the court rules that when the SEC seeks civil penalties against a defendant for securities fraud, the Seventh Amendment entitles the defendant to a jury trial.

Opinion:  5-4  (Perdue loses?)

The court dismisses Moyle v. United States, allowing doctors in Idaho to continue providing abortions in emergency medical situations.

Opinion:    (sane)

Biden and Trump go head to head: How to watch the first general election presidential debate https://t.co/ph2KcAcvWA

— The Associated Press (@AP) June 27, 2024

Just in case anyone missed it:

What time is the debate?
The debate will start at 9 p.m. ET Thursday. It’s being moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

What channel is the debate on?
CNN is carrying the debate live on its broadcast network, as well as on CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN Max. Viewers can also stream it without a log in on CNN’s website. Several networks have also agreed to carry the event live.

Where is the debate?
The setting for the first general election debate is CNN’s studios in Atlanta. Unlike the Republican primary debates, no audience will be present…

No big, just reporting on what advisers say the expectations for each candidate should be, which of course we will take as gospel and repeat.

If either candidate doesn't show up to the presidential debate, the moderators should just ask questions to the candidate that does and to the empty podium next to him.

I dozed off too early, so I’ve been wide awake for hours. But that’s okay — there’s a new season of “The Bear” to binge.

Not sure why I find that show so fascinating. There’s a lot of screaming and general fuckery.

I worked in a kitchen or two back in the day, though my employers were pizza chains and a crappy lounge rather than an aspiring Michelin starred eatery.

Still, there was lots of screaming and general fuckery, so it’s relatable.
