Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Republicans in disarray!

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

The words do not have to be perfect.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

The willow is too close to the house.

The world has changed, and neither one recognizes it.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Amy Coney Barrett: Tone Police

by Betty Cracker|  March 5, 202412:09 pm| 133 Comments

This post is in: Activist Judges!, Domestic Politics, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

Finally got around to reading that unanimous SCOTUS opinion on the Colorado ballot, and hoo boy. I’m not a lawyer, so I’ll leave the legal analysis to qualified people, but tone is something I do understand. And folks, what we have here is a tone cop with a newly minted badge who is instructing us and her colleagues in a loud, booming voice.

I’ve had nothing but contempt for Justice Amy Coney Barrett ever since she trampled with unseemly haste over Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s freshly dug grave to snatch a lifetime SCOTUS sinecure from the Defendant’s dainty orange mitts. Everything about Barrett’s ascension was and is nauseating, including McConnell’s corrupt machinations to push the appointment through a week before voters bounced the Defendant out of office, Barrett’s bland-faced lies during the confirmation process, her supporters’ cynical cooption of motherhood to cloak the nominee’s religious zealotry, the repulsive celebratory super-spreader event, etc., etc., etc.

Barrett’s behavior in the role has been about as bad as we suspected it would be, from bolstering the Fed-Soc Bloc to impose theocratic and plutocratic rule on an allegedly secular and democratic country to public mewling in search of unearned respect and deference. Basically, Barrett is a turd like Alito with the abrasive edges sanded down and festooned with tasteful jewelry. Plus a reasonable expectation of two more decades ahead to immiserate Americans in the name of Jesus and money.

All that and more I expected. But now she’s appointed herself hall monitor, presumptuously telling Americans what they are required to conclude about the opinion:

“All nine Justices agree on the outcome of this case,” Barrett wrote. “That is the message Americans should take home.”

In other words, don’t worry your pretty little heads about the fine print, even if it leverages congressional dysfunction to shield Trump from any conceivable electoral consequences for the coup attempt, and even as the same court’s decision to slow-walk the immunity case will effectively exempt him from timely criminal liability.

Barrett also had the nerve to admonish Justices Kagan, Sotomayor and Jackson to watch their tone:

“In my judgment, this is not the time to amplify disagreement with stridency,” Barrett wrote. “The Court has settled a politically charged issue in the volatile season of a Presidential election. Particularly in this circumstance, writings on the Court should turn the national temperature down, not up.”

Shrill. She means the liberal justices were being shrill about their disagreement with the corrupt majority’s overreach in the opinion. It’s grotesque enough that we’re expected to pretend this preening fraud has shreds of integrity and legitimacy she definitely doesn’t possess. Now she wants to be the tone police too. It’s too much. Fuck her and the high horse she rode in on.

Open thread.

Speaking of Super Tuesday

My first laugh of the day.

It’s Super Tuesday.

If you’re standing in line today to vote for a twice impeached adjudicated rapist with 91 felony charges who owes over $600 million in civil verdicts…

…dreaming about a wall he never built

…longing for his infrastructure plan that’s still two weeks out

…wishing for a health care plan that doesn’t exist

…craving tax cuts you never benefited from

…wanting the kind of leadership that got him mocked by his own staff and world leaders everywhere

Take a sincere moment to ask yourself.

What the hell is wrong with you?

It’s Super Tuesday.

Can’t wait to see Dean Phillips pull in that 12% of the vote today!

Can we make this a point and laugh post?  (Just a thought.)

For some reason [glares in general direction of EM], the bulk of the tweets I’m seeing right now are MAGAts imploring each other to vote early & often. Of course, their guy has a serious (if doomed) challenger — CRUSH NIKKI HALEY FAITHLESS BROWN BEYOTCH is a common subtext. Even the most frantic doomers have trouble proposing Dean Phillips as a potential threat to Our Guy in the Oval Office.

All the details spelled out, for those who want to start marking their cards:

Complaints Department:

Super Tuesday's dominance highlights how presidential selection process can exclude many US voters https://t.co/eCl1YW6iKS

— The Associated Press (@AP) March 4, 2024

… The U.S. is “pretty close to the only democracy in the world” that has the participants of the government controlling the redistricting process and making the rules, said Michael Miller, a political scientist who specializes in democratization at George Washington University. “For a huge swath of our country, it’s still parties picking what’s best for the current party in control.”

What several experts said they find most striking about the U.S. compared to some other democracies is that the right to vote is not enshrined in the Constitution.

The amendments make it illegal to deny specific groups the right to vote, “but there is no provision in the Constitution that gives you the right to vote generally, other than the anti-discrimination provisions,” said Paul Smith, vice president of the Campaign Legal Center.

What is there is “not the same as saying every citizen has the right to vote and to participate in a free and fair electoral process. If I could wave a wand, I would start there,” said Nathan Stock, associate director of the Carter Center’s Conflict Resolution Program. “That lack of a codified right allows for a lot of other mechanisms, voter suppression, all kinds of issues that at this point are fairly unique to American democracy.”…

There is one notable bright spot. Despite hurdles to voting and a selection process for presidential candidates that can exclude much of the country, Miller, of George Washington University, said the actual administration of elections is “exceptional in the United States.”…

“Even well-established democracies have much higher degrees of errors or even some degrees of violence,” he said. “We don’t really have that — so far, anyway.”

Small print minutia:

While Joe Biden and Donald Trump have won almost every contest by large margins and are the overwhelming favorites to once again win their parties’ nominations, they’re not the “presumptive nominees” just yet. AP’s Meg Kinnard explains more. pic.twitter.com/P2IHGYih89

War for Ukraine Day 740: Russia Goes Off the Looking Glass as It Debuts Its New Map of Europe & Go

by Adam L Silverman|  March 4, 20246:48 pm| 23 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Painting by NEIVANMADE. It has a black border. There are grey buildings with black windows along the left side. The center is a yellowy-grey, perhaps Ukrainian wheat fields. There is a black shadow figure striding through it. The figure's legs and feet are all that is visible of it. On the right side are red Zs, which symbolize Putin's/Russia's "Z" war/special military operation in Ukraine. The sky above the buildings is light grey. "GENOCIDE IS GOING BUT WHO EVEN CARES?" is painted in black in the upper left hand corner.

It was very long day today, so I’m going to keep this as brief as possible.

We understand what the enemy’s next plan is, and we will counteract it – address by the President of Ukraine

4 March 2024 – 19:32

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Briefly about this day. Most of the time was dedicated to the military.

Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Anatoliy Barhylevych. The lengthy meeting was focused on frontline issues and tasks. Our operations and prospects.

Despite all the deficits, the capabilities of our warriors to destroy the occupiers cannot be decreased. The Commander-in-Chief is regularly on the front line. Real battlefield commanders from the frontline, from the brigades are involved in decision-making. Today, I agreed and signed a number of necessary new appointments for the Defense Forces.

Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. I held a separate meeting with him. Supply of weapons, fair and proper provision of brigades. Each combat brigade, each frontline unit should receive more of the available modern weapons.

A separate conversation concerned drones. The content was good. In particular, regarding our long-range drones.

A report from the Defence Intelligence, Budanov. Our special operations. We need a clear result in the destruction of Russian military infrastructure and logistics. A greater result. And it will be achieved.

A report from the Security Service of Ukraine, Maliuk. He reported on our counteraction to Russian subversive reconnaissance groups – these murderers who terrorize our border areas. Maliuk also reported on countering collaborators. There are good results in neutralizing these people.

There was a report by the Foreign Intelligence Service, by Lytvynenko. It concerned sensitive international areas and Russia’s current plans. We understand what documents are on the enemy’s desk, what his next plan is. We will counteract.

There was also a separate report today by Deputy Prime Minister Kubrakov. First of all, it was about the functioning of our maritime export corridor. Almost 30 million tons of cargo have already been transported by sea. This is very significant for such war times. And I am grateful to everyone who works in our ports, on the ships, and to everyone who ensures the operation of the sea corridor and its security.

Today, after a report from the regions on the consequences of Russian shelling, I gave separate instructions regarding Odesa, regarding people who lost their homes as a result of the Russian attack with “Shahed” drones. I instructed to help with new housing to replace the lost one as soon as possible – the local authorities have to resolve the issue.

One more thing.

I signed a decree on the Shevchenko Prize, on the awarding of this year’s prize. The winners are worthy. On March 9, the decree will be published.

I thank everyone who cares about Ukraine and Ukrainians! I thank everyone who fights and works for our country and people! I thank everyone in the world who helps and believes in us. Thank you!

Glory to Ukraine!

The more vocal Russians are about this, the more funny (or should I say, sickening and enraging) it is to see paid Kremlin stooges and useful idiots spinning around with their mental gymnastics to making lame-ass attempts to justify what is simply the biggest European war of conquest since WWII.

Ukrainska Pravda has the details:

Russia’s Defence Ministry has claimed that 38 supposedly Ukrainian drones were destroyed over temporarily occupied Crimea on the night of 2-3 March.

Source: Russia’s Defence Ministry

Quote: “An attempt by the Kyiv regime to commit a terrorist attack using 38 aircraft-type UAVs against targets in the Russian Federation was thwarted last night.”

Details: The Russian ministry added that Russian air defence had supposedly “destroyed all Ukrainian uncrewed aerial vehicles over the territory of the Republic of Crimea”.

Background: It was reported that explosions had occurred in the temporarily occupied city of Feodosiia, Crimea, on the night of 2-3 March.

Someone blew up a railway bridge in Samara Oblast, Russia, deep in the Russian rear, that was used for transporting military equipment from a local military factory.

Russian online sources claim the bridge between Zvezda and Chapayevka: 52.95066244949683, 49.66118790743285 was blown up. FSB characterised the explosion as “bavovna”.

Just a few hours after the incident, Ukrainian HUR claimed that the “movement of trains was paralysed” and would be unavailable for a long time.

That’s enough for tonight.

You Told A Lie

A couple of Trumpworld items:

First, though it was eclipsed by the Supreme Court ruling this morning, Allen Weisselberg, Trump’s wartime CFO, pled guilty to perjury this morning and got a five-month sentence.  I assume his lips had to be surgically removed from Trump’s anus before he could plead, because you gotta be a brown-noser supreme to go to jail over something this stupid:

But a key moment of his testimony came when Weisselberg insisted he did not notice a discrepancy on Trump’s financial statements: that Trump’s triplex apartment was listed as being 30,000 sq ft when in reality, it is closer to 11,000 sq ft.

“It was de minimus, in my mind,” he said at the time.

Forbes magazine disputed the claim he made on the stand, saying it had emails and notes that proved Weisselberg had actively tried to convince the magazine for years that the triplex was bigger than it actually was, denying what was listed on real-estate documents. Weisselberg abruptly ended his testimony after Forbes published an article accusing him of lying on the stand.

Of all the things to go to jail for lying about.

Second, there’s a lot of talk about Trump’s slide into dementia.  I want to believe, but does anyone have a link to a clear example of him short-circuiting for more than a couple of seconds?  For example, Jeff Tiedrich posted this six second clip, where Trump definitely loses it at the end.  But did he recover?  I don’t know because the clip was chopped.  I definitely think one of the keys to winning the election is more video evidence that Trump is losing it.  An interview with a psychiatrist who says Trump’s “phonemic paraphasias” is a sign of his worsening dementia is find for nerds and eggheads like the readers of this blog, but what might move the needle with the casual voter is a greatest hits reel of Trump’s brain turning into cheerios.  Does anyone have that?
