Elon Musk is antisemitic. Twitter is toxic.

by MisterDancer|  September 11, 20235:19 pm| 145 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

I know, you’re “tired” of hearing about Musk, and Twitter, and so on. But I assure you, Musk and his growing cadre of Fellow Travelers ain’t tired of spreading hate.

And that’s what Twitter is now — a massive system for changing culture to become ever more hateful:

Musk has found a new scapegoat: the Jews. Or rather, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish community’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to fighting not only anti-Semitism but all forms of racial and religious bigotry and other forms of discrimination. But I suspect the “rather” or the distinction in general might be lost on Musk’s 155 million Twitter followers. Over the past several days Musk has gone on a tear claiming that the catastrophic decline in his company’s value since he purchased it is mostly or entirely the fault of the ADL and churning up Twitter debates that at least big time anti-Semitic accounts think is clearly boosting their cause.

(For more background on this hellshow, see here. And this is only “new” from a Musk personally pushing it POV, otherwise see this 2022 report on same.)

There’s no catchy comment here, no smooth quip. Just the staggering realization that — just like his spreading of Trans hate, or his allowance for racist slurs…it’s just not safe on Twitter, anymore, for a growing cadre of marginalized people. I’ve lost the reference to the comment where I got this (feel free to remind if it was you!), but this post brings receipts, a sample of the hate currently flowing freely down the channels Twitter enables. Click at your own peril.

He bought a platform that was already full of problems — and promise — and just made it so much worse, while also desperately keeping the pieces that people like my fellow front pagers lean on to inform us. It’s a problem, and a growing one. And we need to keep that in mind, y’all, before these attacks become more sophisticated, the nuance we depend on as Progressives lost in a sea of deliberate, planned, disinformation.

I fear the moment Musk brings in someone who can twist more than just Musk’s ego. Someone who can drive the way the application works to their goal to dismantle Social Justice values. There are ways, I suspect, to cause massive damage outside of the semi-random toxic voice boosting happening now.

Because, yeah, hating Jews is a whole big red neon fuckin’ sign, people. Not that we didn’t have sign after sign, before, but with every new ejaculation of hate, we need to have grave concerns about Musk, and the power he now wields in our society. Twitter is powerful, and not just in terms of profits and ad reach.

show full post on front page

I have opined in the past that Twitter became a central platform in social media, esp. across the world, for the same reason so many sniggered and laughed at it — the character limit and early lack of image/video support. These “gaps” allowed Tweets to flow over SMS. Recall 2007? When Twitter started, there was no iPhone, no easy way, on mobile, to browse the web. Being able to not just send, but receive, short messages via Twitter was like magic. I remember posting via SMS to Twitter on my wee cell phone while sitting in the middle of nowhere, reaching social media years before I held a phone that supported a proper browser, much less apps.

Even by the time you get to the Arab Spring in the early 2010’s, take up of iPhones/Android wasn’t even complete in the US, much less other countries. Add to that nascent attempts to lock down the Internet in those countries during those events, the increased use of same to coordinate protests and get the word out to the world, hogging lines…I can’t imagine that chaos. Using SMS to get to social media was critical, in ways we’ve already forgotten.

And now, this system used to organize Progressive voices? Is filing up with more and more alt-Right ideas and hateful content. The people who built systems for Positive Change on Twitter, being drowned out. In a very indirect way, Twitter is revering to the mean — being mean.

The feminist scholar Audre Lorde had a prescient comment, oft-used in activist circles, that touches on this point:

the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.

Dorsey never really wanted Twitter to be what it became. He never, I think, really grasped Gibson’s observation that “The street finds its own uses for things.” And I think Gibson and Lorde are on the same track here, even if Lorde is really a caution, I think, about Gibson (and really, all of Cyberpunk), about using swords as plowshares, about the limits of using tools built to cause harm — or just churn profit — to heal.

Twitter is being rebuilt to cause harm. And it behooves us to think on that, and consider the growing risks around that. We have shared goals of making the world better; can those goals happen with “the master’s tools”?

Again: no catchy answer needed, right now. It’s OK to say “I don’t know either!” It’s just worth it to think on this, and keep it in mind as we use that platform, and so many others.

You don’t have to fix it today. You can even say “I ain’t the fool to fix it!” Yet we cannot hide what Twitter is becoming…and I think we laugh at it, and Muck, at our longer-term peril.

(NOTE: I’ve got no patience for fancy tags on this post/hating Jews/Islamophobic BS  in the comments — especially on the anniversary of 9/11. Open Thread, otherwise.)

Blinken in the hot seat

by Betty Cracker|  September 11, 202312:50 pm| 130 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, War in Ukraine

Over the weekend, Secretary of State Antony Blinken appeared on Jake Tapper’s CNN weekend show. As anyone could have predicted, Tapper asked Blinken about the new Elon Musk biography that reveals the defense contract oligarch unilaterally shut down Ukraine’s internet access in Russian-occupied Crimea to prevent a covert operation against the Russian fleet, which is launching attacks on civilians from there.

Tapper asked if there should be consequences for Musk’s freelance meddling that stopped a U.S. ally from attacking a legit military target, and Blinken repeatedly dodged the question. Here’s the back-and-forth from Rolling Stone (the only video I can find is on Musk’s site, but fuck him — the text conveys the gist):

TAPPER: SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has recently confirmed a report that’s in Walter Isaacson’s new biography of Musk that last year Musk blocked access to his Starlink satellite network in Crimea in order to disrupt a major Ukrainian attack on the Russian navy there. In other words, Musk effectively sabotaged a military operation by Ukraine, a U.S. ally, against Russia, an aggressor country that invaded a U.S. ally. Should there be repercussions for that?

BLINKEN: Jake, I can’t speak to a specific episode. Here’s what I can tell you. Starlink has been a vital tool for the Ukrainians to be able to communicate with each other and particularly for the military to communicate in their effort to defend all of Ukraine’s territory. It remains so, and I would expect it to continue to be critical to their efforts. So what we would hope and expect is that that technology would remain fully available to Ukrainians. It is vital to what they’re doing.

TAPPER: I don’t know that you can’t speak to it. You won’t speak to it. Musk says he was reportedly afraid that Russia would retaliate with nuclear weapons. Musk says that’s based on his private discussions he had with senior Russian officials. Are you concerned that Musk is apparently conducting his own diplomatic outreach to the Russian government? Really, none of this concerns you?

BLINKEN: Jake, I can’t speak to conversations that may or may not have happened. I don’t know. I’m focused on the fact that the technology itself, Starlink, has been really important to the Ukrainians. It remains so, and it should continue to be part of what they’re able to call on to be able to communicate with themselves and again to have the military be able to communicate throughout this Russian aggression. We ourselves have always had to factor in what Russia may do in response to any given thing that we or others do or the Ukrainians do. And we have. But what’s so critical now is that Ukrainians have had real success over the past year.

TAPPER: It sounds like Starlink is so important that the U.S. government doesn’t want to risk offending a capricious billionaire who did some things that I think, in another situation, the U.S. might want to say something about.

I’m not Tapper’s #1 fan, but his questions on this topic were legit, and his conclusion — that the U.S. government is reluctant to confront Musk because Starlink access is vital to the war effort in Ukraine — seems fair too. In every response, Blinken underscores how important Starlink access is to Ukraine. He also states U.S. expectations, i.e., “we would hope and expect is that that technology would remain fully available to Ukrainians.”

Blinken is a smart, experienced diplomat. I assume he, his State employees and everyone in the Biden admin appreciate how dangerous the present situation is, with critical U.S. national security and space travel capabilities subject to the whims of an unstable person with grandiose visions of himself as humanity’s savior and who, oh by the way, has been peddling antisemitic tropes and amplifying Nazi scumbags on his site.

I have got to believe they know this. And I sure as shit HOPE they are executing a strategy behind the scenes to extricate us from this untenable situation, while in the meantime sending Blinken out to mumble “nice doggie” at the snarling wolf. To buy time. For Ukraine and for us.

This might sound like a non sequitur, but bear with me: If American democracy survives the Hydra-headed forces arrayed against it in the upcoming election, we need significant tax policy changes. I am fucking serious, y’all. To paraphrase something I read elsewhere, it’s not just about addressing economic inequality anymore. It’s about national sovereignty.

Sunday Evening Open Thread: What Does Chuck Grassley Know About the Attempted Insurrection, And When Did He Know It?

Grassley Says He Was ‘Never Involved In Any Conversations’ About Him Presiding Over Congress On Jan. 6 https://t.co/yN4EDPEFtO via @TPM

— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) September 7, 2023

Grassley’s worked his ‘kindly, if slightly addled, Grandpa Simpson’ cosplay to great effect for almost as long as I’ve been paying close attention to Republican political maneuvering… but all great performances must eventually be ended, by audience demand if not the wishes of the performer.

Would Grassley throw himself into plotting a coup against a Democratic president? Probably not — if only because he and/or the powerful Iowa family dynasty he heads, wouldn’t get much of a return for that risk. Would he happily accede to a coup, if there was enough of a reward offered to Chuck Grassley? IMO: Does a CAFO pig dump produce sh*t lagoons?

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) told reporters on Capitol Hill Thursday he was not involved in any conversations with Trump allies about the possibility of him presiding over the Jan. 6, 2021 joint session of Congress.

“We were talking about presiding over the Senate but a lot of people get that mixed up with some idea that I was going to preside over the joint session,” Grassley said as he got out of the Senate subway for the first votes of the day. “You know that’s not what I ever intended to do. I was never involved in any conversations on that or anything.”

When pressed about how the mix up happened, Grassley was led away by a staffer and reporters were told the senator’s office could send out a statement to elaborate.

Questions around Trump allies’ discussions about Grassley presiding over Congress instead of then former Vice President Mike Pence on Jan. 6 resurfaced on Tuesday when Trump lawyer John Eastman was asked about those conversations during his disbarment trial in California.

Eastman evaded the question and claimed conversations on that topic were protected by attorney-client privilege, according to Politico. When pressed further about which client he was referring to Eastman said, “President Trump.”…

How long are you cruel reporters gonna keep harrying a poor old man whose memory might not be what it once was?…

That doesn’t mean they had an actual plan in place to do that, but too many people take it as a given that Grassley is a quirky old man and not a hack.

Analysis: Critics of Donald Trump have focused on comments Sen. Charles E. Grassley made to suggest that Grassley was in on a plot to sideline former vice president Mike Pence, who had been resisting Trump’s entreaties to help overturn the 2020 election. https://t.co/FYLCHNTNXf

— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) September 8, 2023

… There’s no real evidence of Grassley’s involvement. But that doesn’t preclude the possibility that some people in Trump’s orbit were angling for that outcome, as evidence suggests they did.

Grassley set off a momentary controversy on Jan. 5 by saying: “If the vice president isn’t there — and we don’t expect him to be there — I will be presiding over the Senate.” Roll Call initially cast this as Grassley saying he personally expected to preside over the certification of electoral votes. (In the absence of the vice president, that duty falls to the Senate president pro tempore, which was Grassley.)

But Grassley’s actual comments appeared to refer to a separate session of the Senate rather than the crucial joint session of Congress, something his office clarified then and Grassley himself reiterated Thursday. His office said he would fill in for Pence in the Senate only if Pence stepped out for a period of time.

(Grassley on Jan. 6 would indeed wind up briefly presiding over the Senate, after Pence was evacuated amid the growing unrest at the Capitol. But Grassley, too, was soon removed from the chamber.)

Grassley and his office have repeatedly denied that anybody approached him about presiding over the joint session so he could decline to certify the results on Jan. 6.

But other evidence makes clear that some Trump allies entertained the idea of Pence stepping aside — and that even Pence at one point at least discussed the possibility…

Why wasn’t Chuck Grassley hauled in front of the January 6 Committee and asked why he said “we don’t expect” Pence “to be there” on January 5, 2021? What did Grassley know and what was his involvement? https://t.co/1nGpSP1sv2

Today, russian terrorists attacked a vehicle of the international humanitarian organisation Road2Relief in Chasiv Yar, killing two volunteers – the director of Road2Relief, Emma Igual, a Spanish citizen who studied at the University of California at Berkeley, and Anthony Ihnat, a Canadian citizen. Two other volunteers, both German citizens, were injured. Road2Relief’s efforts are entirely focused on civilian projects: the evacuation of civilians in war zones, medical evacuation, humanitarian aid distribution to frontline communities, and the provision of mobile clinics that assist local residents who are unable to leave their homes.
They make every effort every day to mitigate the consequences of the systematic terror of civilians by the russian occupiers. A painful, irreparable loss. Emma and Anthony will forever be in our hearts.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Front: over the past seven days, we have advanced – address by the President of Ukraine

10 September 2023 – 22:28

Fellow Ukrainians!

At the end of this week, it is important to say a few things. First of all, the frontline.

Over the past seven days, we have advanced.

There is movement in the Tavria directions. There is movement in the Bakhmut direction.

Kupyansk and Lyman directions, Avdiivka and Maryinka – we are holding our ground there.

I am grateful to all the warriors who make this possible! Every week, our warriors continuously keep the initiative in the hands of Ukraine.

It is Ukrainian heroism that determines how this war will end. We must all remember this.

Secondly, I want to thank all our people who have been helping to overcome the consequences of Russian shelling and rescuing people over the past week. Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk region, Donetsk region, cities of Odesa region. Thank you!

Kostiantynivka, Donetsk region. Paramedic Ruslan Hubanov, Police Lieutenant. After the Russian terrorists attacked, he rescued the wounded and pulled people out of the rubble. In total, he saved 82 people during his time on duty. Thank you, Ruslan! Police Lieutenant Oleh Sizov also works as a paramedic. He saved 153 people during his time on duty. Just imagine how many lives are saved by one person. Thank you, Oleh! Police Captain Olena Vasylenko arrives at the sites of the attacks, documents the consequences of the shelling, and helps the wounded. She herself came under artillery fire, was wounded, and returned to duty. Thank you, Olena!

And I thank the guys, the Ukrainian rescuers who were the first to arrive after the Russian attack on Kostiantynivka, on the market: firefighter-rescuer Roman Dychko, Chief Master Sergeant Denys Sukhanov, Captain of the Civil Defense Service Serhiy Chikin.

Brutal shelling of Kryvyi Rih. One person was killed. My condolences to the family… 60 wounded. I thank each and every one of you who helped save people! And I would like to especially mention Vadym Kuchkurda, Yevheniy Huba and Vladyslav Kurasov, employees of our State Emergency Service. The guys rescued three people from under the rubble. Thank you! I would also like to mention police officers Bohdan Kovalenko and Valeriy Velykyi. They were among the first to arrive at the site of the attack and began to get people out of the rubble.

Sumy. Police Senior Lieutenant Yaroslav Kuts arrived at the site of the Russian shelling and quickly extinguished the fire in close proximity to people trapped under the rubble. I thank you for this speed, Yaroslav! I would also like to recognize the employees of the Sumy region’s State Emergency Service: Sergeants of the Civil Defense Service Pavlo Zhuk and Ihor Tokarenko, and Colonel of the Civil Defense Service Serhiy Halat. Thank you guys for saving the lives of our people!

Odesa region, the city of Kiliya. Andriy Nosov, Andriy Mosienko, Andriy Vasylenko – our firefighters. Thank you, guys! The city of Reni. I would like to recognize a police officer, Major Denys Bandarenko. After the Russian attack by “Shaheds”, he saved four people, provided them with medical care and took them to the hospital. I thank you, Denys!

I also thank every Ukrainian doctor, every nurse and all Ukrainian combat medics who save the lives of our people and restore their strength! This is truly a great job.

And one more thing.

Today, near the city of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk region, Russian terrorists attacked a volunteer vehicle. A direct hit from an anti-tank missile system. As of this time, we know for sure that Anthony Ignat of Canada was killed. Unfortunately, Emma Igual of Spain is also likely to have been killed. My condolences to their families. Two other volunteers were taken to Dnipro hospitals – German citizen Mawick Ruben and Swedish citizen Johan Mathias – and they are being provided with the necessary assistance. This Russian shelling once again confirms how close the war against Ukraine is to everyone in the world who truly values human life and who believes it is the common moral duty of humanity to stop terror and defeat evil.

Glory to all our warriors! Glory to all our people! I thank everyone in the world who helps Ukraine survive and protect lives! We will definitely prevail!

Glory to Ukraine!

The rationalizations here should be good…

https://twitter.com/HenryJFoy/status/1700881708634227064

From The Financial Times: (emphasis mine)

It took until close to midnight on Friday for a handful of leading developing countries to propose their compromise. Accept this, was the pitch, or bear the consequences of a fractured G20.

After five days of gruelling discussions, the western delegates took the deal. When their bosses assembled the next day at the summit in New Delhi, the scale of their concession was made stark.

The US, EU and other western allies had agreed to remove condemnation of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine from the meeting’s communique, in exchange for pledges from all 20 states — including Russia and China — to respect territorial integrity and work towards a “just peace” for Kyiv.

“This is a climbdown,” said Sarang Shidore, director of the Quincy Institute’s Global South programme.

The degree to which the western allies were willing to compromise, despite Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Putin skipping the summit, highlighted just how keen they were to salvage the credibility of a grouping that had come under severe pressure since Russia invaded Ukraine just over 18 months ago.

“If we would be writing the text ourselves, it would be looking very different,” said a senior EU official. “It’s a process of building a global consensus. So if this means formulating compromises, then this is what . . . needs to be done.”

US officials echoed that argument. The west needed big developing countries onside to have any chance of them pressurising Russia to keep in check with global rules and achieve peace in Ukraine.

“The major economies of the world — including, by the way, Brazil, India, South Africa — are united on the need to uphold international law and for Russia to respect international law,” said Jon Finer, the deputy US national security adviser.

Russia’s lead negotiator praised the statement — which also calls for a return to the Black Sea grain deal to export Ukrainian foodstuffs that Moscow has withdrawn from — as “balanced”. Ukraine, however, condemned the shift in rhetoric as “nothing to be proud of”.

Having accepted that they cannot force Putin to back down alone, the New Delhi declaration represents the most far-reaching effort by Washington, Brussels and other western capitals to forge a shared position with the world’s most powerful developing economies.

It is also a largely unexpected win for Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, who is facing national elections next year. Modi’s decision to parlay his rotating G20 presidency into a year-long platform to promote India’s culture, foreign policy goals, and ambition to serve as a leader of the so-called Global South developing countries has paid off, analysts said.

“Washington clearly has gone the extra mile to ensure that its burgeoning and increasingly close partner India was not embarrassed with what would otherwise have been the first G20 without a joint declaration,” Shidore said.

“There were question marks about the future of the G20. And I think India’s strong leadership has preserved the G20,” the senior EU official said.

Western diplomats argued that their willingness to compromise on dropping the reference to Russian “aggression” had ensured China and others agreed to wording on stopping attacks on infrastructure, restoring the Black Sea grain deal, and upholding territorial integrity.

However, other western delegates claimed this weekend’s compromise will aid their efforts to persuade developing nations to pressure Moscow into ending the war. Their negotiating partners would now go back to their capitals with pledges on preserving Ukraine’s territory and infrastructure in mind.

“It’s not the end of the discussion,” the senior EU official added. “But it’s another stepping stone in the right direction.”

Next year’s G20 is in Brazil. Its president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva courted controversy late on Saturday when he said Putin could travel to Rio de Janeiro without fear of reprisal, despite being the subject of an international arrest warrant.

“What I can tell you is that if I am president of Brazil and he goes to Brazil there is no way he will be arrested,” Lula, who has repeatedly accused the US and EU of “encouraging” the war in Ukraine, told local media in India.

Are in complete opposition.

This agreement IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING TERRIBLE!!!! Russia is not going to be constrained by it and neither is the PRC. Brazil’s position before and during the summit regarding how they’re going to deal with Putin and Russia indicates that the document isn’t even overcome by events (OBE) because the events preceded the summit communique’s drafting. This isn’t diplomacy, this is strategic incoherence. The US and our EU allies should be ashamed of themselves. All they’ve done here is given Russia and Putin a win while pumping up Modi who is a Hindu religious extremist that if given a chance will further degrade India into an illiberal democracy. No communique would have been better than this.

Commenter Feathers sent along the following:

Long time reader and commenter (Feathers) first time emailer. Thanks again for all you do on keeping the invasion of Ukrainian and the Russian war on the West front and center in people’s minds.

I just read last night’s post, saw that yesterday was Ukraine’s Sports Day. By happy coincidence, Iryna Pidgaina and Artem Koval, one of Ukraine’s junior ice dance teams (the under-18 division, but taken very seriously) won the Junior Grand Prix competition in Istanbul. The Grand Prix is the top level competition series in each division.

Attempts Larry King voice:

Poughkeepsie hello!

More seriously, here’s what Feathers sent along:

The video of the Ukrainian ice dancers performance:

The playing of the Ukrainian national anthem at the award ceremony:

The post performance and post awarding of the gold medal interview, which is in English so no subtitles needed:

That’s enough for tonight.
