Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Our Vast Right-Wing Creep Problem

by Betty Cracker|  August 7, 202312:57 pm| 142 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

In morning thread comments, we discussed a HuffPo article that exposes a racist, misogynist, right-wing creep who used to write pseudonymously for white supremacist sites and now dispenses a hastily varnished version of the same toxic garbage at elite institutions. It’s possible that particular creep’s academic career will be derailed by the revelation, though I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.

But he’s just one example of an enormous problem that arguably manifests in every aspect of our society. A disturbing number of mass shooters have a similar origin story — they’re disaffected because they don’t automatically receive the female attention and commercial success they feel entitled to, and they fall down rabbit holes online that reinforce their grievances and channel it into eruptions of apocalyptic rage.

Misogyny seems to be a gateway drug. In the morning thread, valued commenter Suzanne shared a theory about why that is:

I genuinely think misogyny is the very seed of the problems we are dealing with, because it is really part of the politics of the home, and that is where these terrible dudes are acculturated first. That is not to say that racism, homophobia, ableism, anti-Semitism, etc. are not equally toxic and harmful. Just that one of the very first things these terrible men come to believe is that women exist for their service and comfort. And they are taught that beginning the day they are born.

I agree. These angry, entitled young men don’t all become mass shooters — or disgraced academics. Many become white supremacists, fascists and/or religious fanatics. Maybe they storm the U.S. Capitol, make Nazi-adjacent memes for Repub presidential candidates or steal state secrets to make themselves look cool to other members on their Discord channels. I collectively think of them as “Trump Youth.”

In an Atlantic article published today, Hillary Clinton (aka America’s Cassandra) addresses the phenomenon:

There have always been angry young men alienated from mainstream society and susceptible to the appeal of demagogues and hate-mongers. But modern technology has taken the danger to another level. This was Steve Bannon’s key insight.

Long before Bannon ran Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, he was involved in the world of online gaming. He discovered an army of what he later described as “rootless white males,” disconnected from the real world but highly engaged online and often quick to resort to sexist and racist attacks. When Bannon took over the hard-right website Breitbart News, he was determined to turn these socially isolated gamers into the shock troops of the alt-right, pumping them full of conspiracy theories and hate speech. Bannon pursued the same project as a senior executive at Cambridge Analytica, the notorious data-mining and online-influence company largely owned by the right-wing billionaire Robert Mercer. According to a former Cambridge Analytica engineer turned whistleblower, Bannon targeted “incels,” or involuntarily celibate men, because they were easy to manipulate and prone to believing conspiracy theories. “You can activate that army,” Bannon told the Bloomberg journalist Joshua Green. “They come in through Gamergate or whatever and then get turned onto politics and Trump.”

We’ve seen the destructive role these dopes play at micro and macro levels, and thanks to deft exploitation by depraved right-wing oligarchs, here we are with a massive national problem that has metastasized beyond any single demographic.

In the Atlantic article, Clinton cites Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s recent advisories on a “growing ‘epidemic of loneliness and isolation’ threatens Americans’ personal health and also the health of our democracy.” As usual, there are no easy fixes.

Clinton cites hopeful signs, including parents showing up at school board meetings to push back against right-wing book-bans, a revived union movement, people showing up to vote, etc. Her conclusion: “It still takes a village.” She’s usually right.

Late Night Open Thread: ‘Bitcoin Bandit’ Razzlekhan Is Back in the News

Razzlekhan and husband guilty of $4.5bn Bitcoin launder https://t.co/RPUTE3Y0oY

— The Cyber Security Hub™ (@TheCyberSecHub) August 4, 2023

They aren’t Bonnie & Clyde — they’re J.J. Caucus (Doonesbury) and Zeke Brenner. Cartoon characters.

Sketch AF, as the youngs say. Per NYMag, “An Unexpected Twist in the Saga of the Rapping Crypto Couple”:

When Heather Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein were arrested in February 2022 for allegedly trying to launder billions of dollars of bitcoin stolen in the mysterious Bitfinex hack of 2016, most of the attention in the case gravitated toward Morgan’s subpar rapping alter ego, Razzlekhan, and the massive internet footprint that came with it. But the arrests also gave some clues as to who pulled off the Bitfinex hack, the largest heist in crypto history.

According to the Feds, Morgan and Lichtenstein had access to the funds from the heist roughly six months after they were stolen from the Hong Kong–based exchange. But many observers weren’t sure if Lichtenstein and Morgan could have pulled off the heist itself. After all, they were able to launder only a tiny fraction of the 119,000 bitcoin stolen in the phishing attack. And they were never the savviest of alleged criminals: When the Feds raided their Wall Street apartment, they found a burner phone in a bag labeled burner phone…

In the hearing, Lichtenstein also explained many of the suspect trips he took to eastern Europe and central Asia shortly prior to his arrest. According to CNBC, Lichtenstein, who was born in Soviet Russia, traveled to Ukraine and Kazakhstan to convert crypto to cash via Russian and Ukrainian proxies. The money was then shipped to Russia and Ukraine, where Lichtenstein picked it up and deposited it into his American bank account. It was in Kazakhstan that Morgan says she became suspicious of her husband’s finances. While they were purportedly on a working vacation, she saw him burning documents in a trash can. “When I asked him about it, he was evasive,” Morgan said…

The Washington Post is more expansive:

show full post on front page

Shockwaves rippled through the cryptocurrency world in the summer of 2016 when 119,754 bitcoin, worth around $71 million at the time, disappeared from the digital coffers of the Hong Kong-based exchange Bitfinex through thousands of unauthorized transactions. Over the next half-decade, that crypto cache exploded in value, reaching the billions — yet the identity of the mastermind behind one of the largest heists in crypto history remained a mystery.

That is until Thursday, when tech entrepreneur Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein admitted in federal court to hacking Bitfinex seven years ago…

Court documents describe how Lichtenstein on Aug. 2, 2016, employed a slew of advanced hacking tools and techniques to purloin 119,754 bitcoin, or more than half of Bitfinex’s inventory at the time, in under four hours. According to prosecutors, Lichtenstein transferred the coins to a cryptocurrency wallet under his control through more than 2,000 transactions and then covered his tracks by deleting the access credentials in Bitfinex’s network.

What happened next was the financial equivalent of stealing a pumpkin and having it suddenly turn into a magical horse carriage. At the time of the hack, bitcoin’s value hovered around $600 — but the price skyrocketed over the years, reaching a peak of more than $68,000 in 2021. As the money grew, the couple attempted to launder it by funneling the funds into dark-net marketplaces, converting the bitcoin into other forms of cryptocurrency, opening accounts under false names and moving the stolen funds in thousands of small-sum transactions to avoid detection, according to prosecutors.

A tiny amount of the funds was also spent on non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as well as a Walmart gift card and payments to Uber, Hotels.com and PlayStation, according to a criminal complaint.

During Thursday’s plea hearing, prosecutors said Lichtenstein had used the assets to buy gold coins, which Morgan helped bury in California, Reuters reported. The two also traveled to Ukraine and Kazakhstan to meet with middlemen to convert the bitcoin into cash, which was then shipped to addresses in Russia and Ukraine and subsequently picked up to be deposited into American accounts, prosecutors said.

The couple’s activities in Ukraine “at times appear pulled from the pages of a spy novel,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing last year — and they “appear to have been setting up a contingency plan for a life in Ukraine and/or Russia prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.”…

Since there were stories last fall that Lichtenstein’s trial would involve “classified national security information“, I personally suspect he was at the very least getting some useful hacking advice from the professionals in Mother Russia. But maybe he just wandered into a top-level geopolitical situation haplessly?

The Bitfinex hackers are on trial but have had their trial moved due to the Trump indictment.

One of the hackers, Razzlekhan, is an amateur rapper.

She allegedly stole $4.1 billion.

… Barr, who was appointed by Trump, responded “of course” when asked on CBS’s “Face the Nation” if he would be willing to appear as a witness in Trump’s trial over federal charges related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. He declined to answer whether he was interviewed by the special counsel in connection to the federal investigation.

Barr has been a staunch critic of the former president since he resigned from his post shortly after the 2020 election. He noted that the case brought by special counsel Jack Smith was a “challenging” one, but that he does not think it “runs afoul of the First Amendment.”

When asked about his interactions with Trump and how he told the former president there was no evidence of election fraud, Barr said that his investigations into the fraud “satisfied” the conclusions…

War for Ukraine Day 529: The Russian Bombardments Continue

by Adam L Silverman|  August 6, 20236:53 pm| 30 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Just a quick housekeeping note: I know that a number of you are upset regarding my, as well as other front pagers, use of tweets in our posts. While I can’t speak for my colleagues, the reason these get used is because of Twitter’s unique place among social media platforms. If you think of these platforms as a social network itself, Twitter is the bridging and connecting node for all the rest. Or, at least, all the rest that have any size and reach. Breaking news, by reporters or everyday people or government agencies, all gets posted on Twitter. Even if it started on a Facebook page. Facebook pages/posts, Instagram posts, YouTube videos, etc all get reposted on Twitter. The Telegram posts of the Russian milbloggers would not be known at all but for them being reposted and/or translated and reposted on Twitter. Until something replaces Twitter in this unique position within the social media platform ecosystem, we’re going to have to use it. Even as the Starlink Snowflake degrades the platform.

The Russians once again bombarded Ukraine overnight!

https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1688095956137279488

Yesterday, russians attacked Ukraine with cruise missiles, aeroballistic missiles, and drones.
Ukrainian air defense destroyed:
17 Kalibr missiles;
13 Kh-101/Kh-555 missiles;
27 Shahed UAVs.
Information about Kinzhals is classified.
Glory to Ukraine’s air defenders!
Happy Ukrainian Air Force Day!

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Ukraine needs strength and maximum focus on achieving victory – address by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

6 August 2023 – 20:16

Good health to you, fellow Ukrainians!

Today, I was honored to congratulate all our warriors of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on their professional day. All of our pilots and anti-aircraft gunners, specialists who provide the technical side of our aviation and air defense… This is the day of true Ukrainian heroes who save lives and protect our cities and villages from Russian terror against all odds. What is very important is that our Air Force warriors give not only us, but also the entire free world a clear confidence that Russian terror can be defeated.

Today, I heard a report on the use of advanced air defense systems – Patriots and IRIS-T, which we received from our partners – by our warriors. I am grateful to every country, every leader who helped us with them! These are powerful systems, very effective… They have already yielded significant results. And not only for Ukraine. Because every destruction of Russian missiles in our skies, especially air-launched ballistic “Kinzhals”, which Russian terrorists have long boasted about… Every success of our warriors is a reassurance to the world that a terrorist state is not able to undermine common security.

In this week alone, Russian terrorists have already used 65 different missiles and 178 attack drones against us, including 87 “Shaheds”. We managed to shoot down a significant number of them. We will do our best to make the Ukrainian sky shield only stronger. Here, in our skies, we can prove that terror is losing. All together we can prove it – all partners. The responsible position of each partner in supplying air defense systems and missiles to them is very important. Complete protection against terror is needed here, so that later there is no need to think about protecting other nations from it. Ukraine can win this battle, and our sky shield will eventually guarantee security for the whole of Europe.

Today, I awarded our Air Force servicemen and talked to them. We are equally eager to see F-16s in action in the Ukrainian skies as soon as possible. We are doing everything for this. Today, I also handed over the Gold Stars of the Hero of Ukraine to the families of the pilots killed in action for the sake of our country. Eternal memory to every hero and eternal gratitude to every Ukrainian family that gave our people such heroes… May Ukraine’s victory in this terrible war be the highest honor to all those who chose the defense of our people as their destiny!

We are already preparing for the next week to further strengthen our state and our positions.

There will be new communication with partners on defense packages for Ukraine. We will add even more content to the international events of August and September that have already been planned. These include the Crimea Platform, the Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen, and our participation in the UN General Assembly. Of course, we will also continue the internal purge of our state from those who, unfortunately, weaken Ukraine through their abuses.

Ukraine needs only strength, only maximum focus on achieving victory. If someone already thinks that the war is “somewhere over there” and that someone else has to win the war, then they need to come back to reality. Only as a nation can we pull through. Every day we need to deliver results for Ukraine and for all those who are fighting for Ukraine. I am grateful to everyone who is bringing our victory closer in this way! Glory to our warriors! Glory to our people! To the strong and beautiful people! And once again, congratulations on the Day of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine!

Glory to Ukraine!

https://twitter.com/DefenceU/status/1688109161882533888

Best wishes to our skies’ defenders.
Today we honor those who are constantly on guard and can save hundreds of lives with a single shot. Those who can outrun the wind and have eagle vision. Those who are ready to master the F-16 and Patriot in the shortest possible time. We remember those who are forever in heaven.
Happy Ukrainian Air Force Day!

Obligatory:

Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
Through the great spaces in the sky.
Be with them always in the air,
In darkening storms or sunlight fair;
Oh, hear us when we lift our prayer,
For those in peril in the air!

Donetsk:

https://twitter.com/wartranslated/status/1688142164243431425

Heated argument in Donetsk between a local and an occupier: desperate man armed with a hatchet accuses the Russian of nazi-like behavior. “In 10 years, you only brought me sorrow, not joy” he says.

It is difficult to understand what is happening without context but the occupier seems to have moved to Donetsk in 2014 (Abakumova is a district of Donetsk), while the local man says he was tortured by invaders. Clearly, the man is distressed after 10 years of occupation. He avoids directly saying whether he is “for” or “against” something, probably aware of potential consequences.

This interaction indicates that the mood on the ground in Donetsk is not what Russians want you to believe.

Last night Nukular Biskits asked:

Adam, once (if?) hostilities have ceased, what is your opinion about how the international community should pursue war crimes prosecutions against Russians and/or Russia itself?

And are there any credible claims that Russia might could make against Ukrainians?

I expect the international community to do what they are already setting the stage to do. They are going to run the usual war crimes tribunal process in the Hague. There are no credible claims that Russia could make against Ukrainians. Though I expect they’ll try. I also expect they’ll weaponize InterPol like they do with their other opponents.

That’s enough for today.

it appears that between Jack Smith and the J6 judge who checks all the boxes – smart / fierce / black / female / immigrant / tired of Trumps delaying tactics – things are going to move relatively quickly with the J6 case.

The Jack Smith filing with the court in response to Trump’s request for an extension is a thing of beauty.  He doesn’t pull his punches!

Here’s the whole tweet so you don’t have to click:

The best way to shut him up.
Is to not revoke his conditional release.
Don’t give him the 1A battle and appeals he is craving. He needs to delay the trial by any means necessary. Hence this show of defiance.
Don’t martyr him.
He’ll use any pre-trial reprimand to appeal for changes in the judge and venue.
He will probably not win…but it could cause more delays.
The best way to shut him up? Give him a speedy trial.
And a bit more in response to replies, and it’s good advice!

This is not giving him a pass. This is accelerating something he desperately wants to avoid.

He knows the walls are closing in and will become more unhinged and desperate by the day. A gag order will not stop it.

You want mugshots, fingerprints and to see him humiliated.

I want the quickest path to see him held accountable for his crimes.

It’s not the same.
