This post is in: Excellent Links, Open Threads, Proud to Be A Democrat, Trump Indictments

Thursday Morning Open Thread: Life Goes On

(John Deering via GoComics.com)

As expected, Jack Smith is present in the courtroom for Trump’s arraignment. This is the second time they’ve been face-to-face as Trump has been attacking him as “deranged,” a “crackhead” and implying he had something to do with cocaine found at the White House.

— Kaitlan Collins (@kaitlancollins) August 3, 2023

Per the Washington Post, “Assailed by Trump, special counsel Jack Smith lets indictments speak for him” [unpaywalled ‘gift’ link]:

… While Smith has remained taciturn, a picture of the prosecutor has emerged through his work and court filings, which included charges filed against Trump in early June in the documents case and charges filed Tuesday in the 2020 election case. Together, the efforts reveal a prosecutor meticulously assembling two high-stakes cases with scope and speed, according to a review of his work and interviews with legal analysts.

“He’s obviously methodical, he’s obviously thorough, but he’s also just efficient,” said Lauren Ouziel, a former federal prosecutor in Manhattan and Philadelphia who is now a law professor at Temple University. “He’s not dillydallying. He’s taking the time he needs, but no more.”…

Attorney General Merrick Garland, who named Smith special counsel last year to take over the two Trump cases, pointed to the fact that Trump and President Biden were both seeking the presidency again in 2024. Since his appointment, Smith has been the focus of online threats and criticism, and he receives protection from a security detail…

Even though Trump has been charged, key elements of Smith’s work still remain unknown. Prosecutors could have additional evidence beyond what is included in an indictment, for instance.

Smith also mentioned Tuesday that the investigation of other people is ongoing. The indictment unsealed that day mentions six unnamed co-conspirators — most of whom are identifiable through other public information, but none of whom were charged so far, though that could change.

show full post on front page

“These are ‘speaking indictments,’” Ouziel, the professor, said. “But in an important sense, the government is not really going to speak. They’re not really going to put their money where their mouth is until it’s time to go to trial and actually present the evidence.”…

Smith’s refusal to engage with Trump’s rhetoric is how prosecutors are supposed to act, legal experts said.

Prosecutors “make their cases in court,” Kay L. Levine, a law professor and associate dean for research at Emory University’s law school, said in an interview before the latest indictment. “They don’t make their cases in the court of public opinion.”

“He seems like he is immune to getting baited into any kind of public debate about the case or what the case is going to be about,” Levine said of Smith. “When he has the evidence, he gets the indictment and goes forward.”…

“He’s speaking through the documents he’s filing in court,” Litt said, “and that’s what a prosecutor’s supposed to do.”

Much more detail at the link!

Special counsel Jack Smith has turned into an online phenomenon, portrayed by a set of liberals as Trump’s worst nightmare in everything from memes to throw pillows. Nightly reports ??https://t.co/41kzhHKP9h

— POLITICO (@politico) August 2, 2023

Tiger Beat on the Potomac isn’t sure whether to be snarky, or jealous:

For years, there has been palpable desperation on the left for Trump to get punished for a crime — any crime.

Now, after special counsel Jack Smith brought four charges against former President Donald Trump on Tuesday stemming from the Jan. 6 attack, liberals who have long been praying for Trump’s downfall have found their hero.

Within hours of the latest indictment, Smith was an online phenomenon, portrayed as the left’s avenging angel and Trump’s worst nightmare.

The legion of Trump haters have been looking to Smith for salvation since Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed him as special counsel in November. On X, the website formerly known as Twitter, the fan account @7Veritas4 — with a display name of “Jack E. Smith” and a header photo of Smith replicated in dark sunglasses — has racked up over 300,000 followers. In recent days, the account has been posting GIFs from the film Inglourious Basterds, with Smith’s head superimposed onto a menacing character known for killing Nazis called the “Bear Jew,” along with Game of Thrones images of dragons descending on cities, ready to wreak havoc. Countless accounts online have display names like “Jack Smith Fan Club President;” take a look at the hashtag “jacksmithisahero” on TikTok and it’s more of the same…

I am completely fried, so just a brief by the numbers update tonight. I will try to get to Ms. D. Ranged question tomorrow night.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

Everyone must work for the victory, for the protection of people and Ukraine – address by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

3 August 2023 – 21:45

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

There were many meetings today. Different ones. International work, internal security, defense of the state.

The meeting on the Crimea Platform – the content of the summit, the international presence at the summit, its impact on our ability to keep up the pressure for the liberation of Crimea – we are working on the details. And we are already preparing not only the Crimea Platform Summit at the level of leaders in August, but also the parliamentary dimension of the Crimea Platform, which will be held in the autumn.

Today is the second day of an important meeting with the ambassadors of Ukraine in Zakarpattia region.

Yesterday and today we had the highest political and highest military levels of communication. The ambassadors had very substantive conversations with the Minister of Defense, the Commander-in-Chief, Commander of the Air Force, Vice Admiral Neizhpapa, the Commander of the Naval Forces, Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service Lytvynenko, and NSDC Secretary Danilov. All of them. I specifically asked Commander-in-Chief Zaluzhny, the commanders and Mr. Kuleba to hold such a meeting to discuss the key things that our warriors and defense forces need so much, so that they could convey all this to the ambassadors.

Prime Minister Shmyhal, Yulia Svyrydenko, Stefanishyna, Kubrakov also attended the meeting today. There was also a meeting between the ambassadors and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk on parliamentary diplomacy, which can be very effective if it is fully consistent with our overall state strategy.

It is important that the ambassadors of Ukraine are fully informed about every need of Ukraine in great detail. Weapons, equipment, munitions, finances, specific political decisions… I thank everyone who was active at this meeting in Zakarpattia, and I thank Zakarpattia for such a welcome.

Today, there were reports from Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Malyuk and Minister of Internal Affairs Klymenko. In particular, one of the issues is the inspection of the “military commissars”.

We talked in detail. The inspection reveals many abuses. Frankly disgusting ones. All the facts revealed by law enforcement officers will be presented to the public and investigated in the framework of criminal proceedings. The conclusion is obvious: the recruitment system needs people who understand the value of defending Ukraine. The value, not the price of decisions. People who have seen the war and gone through it should work in the “military enlistment offices”. There are those who, unfortunately, lost their limbs, but did not lose their dignity and did not lose Ukraine. I am grateful to them.

Minister Klymenko reported separately and in detail on the training of our National Guardsmen – the provision of ammunition and equipment is a priority. He also spoke about the protection of critical facilities, including nuclear power plants. We discussed the situation in the regions after the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, and the provision of all necessary supplies to people. The Minister also reported on measures taken to combat crime. There were informative reports on the entire range of work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

And, of course, the frontline.

The battles are tough, the occupiers are trying their best to stop our guys. The assaults are very fierce. Kupyansk, Lyman, Bakhmut, Maryinka, Avdiivka directions. Southern directions. It is difficult everywhere. But no matter what the enemy does, it is the Ukrainian force that dominates. And I am grateful to everyone on the frontline for this!

Today I would like to recognize the warriors of the 15th operational brigade of the National Guard. Melitopol direction. Thank you, guys! I would also like to mention the warriors of the Izmail border guard detachment who, together with the maritime units, counter Russian “Shahed” attacks.

In total, the terrorists have already launched at least 1961 “Shaheds” against Ukraine, and a significant number of them have been shot down. Unfortunately, not all of them. We are working to shoot down more – to shoot down as many as possible. We are working to have more air defense systems. In particular, this is a task for each of our ambassadors, all representatives of Ukraine.

Everyone must work for the victory, for the protection of life. The lives of people and the protection of our beautiful Ukraine! We will definitely win.

Glory to Ukraine!

Another insidious attack by russian terrorists on Kherson. This time, the 18th-century St. Catherine’s Cathedral and public transportation were targeted. Three people were injured. The russians deliberately fired at the cathedral for the second time while the rescuers were putting out the fire. Four of them were injured.

As promised yesterday, I am showing you the first russian tank destroyed yesterday in Novoselivske.

Please listen to the voice-over message from one of their drone pilots regarding the drones.

Russians attacked Novoselivske with an armored formation that included at least 4 tanks and an evacuation vehicle. The 32nd brigade needed more drones to continuously monitor for enemy activity.

However, with your help, @LibertyUkraineF team passed 2 more drones to them just in time to repel this attack and repel.

Yesterday you saved the lives of Ukrainians and my friends.

Today we need to reinforce them more. The drones are finally in stock, and the return on investment from these drones is beyond expectations. It’s saved lives and destroyed russian tanks that cost millions of dollars.

Please donate via this link: https://paypal.com/pools/c/8WoEyuPafr… We will purchase 4 daylight drones and 1 thermal drone for the brigade.

The second video will probably be published later. I have it, but I am not allowed to post it yet.

It’s Like Groundhog Day, All Over Again

So this week, Trump was “indicated” and is being arraigned again.

I wonder if it’s a “If it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium” kind of thing, where he gets confused about whether this is NY or GA or DC and whether it’s Jack Smith or Fani Willis or Alvin Bragg.

With all these charges, I can only imagine the kind of stress a normal person would be under.  So I guess my only question is how drugged up is Donald Trump these days?  He wouldn’t say “Not Guilty” at one of these; he made his attorney say it. I wonder if he’s worried that his voice would break.  Mine surely would!

If there’s a live stream, someone post it, please.  I’m not sure anyone can top the “Law and Order” promo with Alvin Bragg, Fani Willis, Jack Smith, etc, but I hope people are trying!  Does anyone have the link to that?

DeSantis – Newsom Debate

by Betty Cracker|  August 3, 20232:57 pm| 95 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

I don’t like this for several reasons, but it looks like it’s happening:

Ron DeSantis agrees to debate Gavin Newsom on Fox News

Govs. Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom have tentatively agreed to debate — one hosted by Fox News…

A showdown between the two seemed unlikely as DeSantis ramped up his presidential campaign. But Newsom still has spent months trying to entice his counterpart into joining him on a stage.

On Wednesday, DeSantis agreed, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity: “Absolutely I’m game. Just tell me when and where.”

An aide to Newsom told POLITICO that the governor was also in. Newsom’s office had sent a formal request offer to Fox News last week with proposed debate dates of Nov. 8 or Nov. 10. That request called for Hannity to serve as the sole moderator for a 90-minute forum on Fox News that would not include an in-studio audience and would air live.

“Desantis should put up or shut up. Anything else is just games,” the aide said.

It makes sense that DeSunkus would grasp at anvils — drowning man is desperate. But what is Newsom playing at here?

Newsom seems like a sharp guy, and I’ve cheered his attacks on DeSantis on social media. He was 100% justified since DeSantis frequently lies about California in an attempt to put his own shitty performance as Florida’s governor in a better light.

IIRC, Newsom ably debunked Rancid DeMeatball’s lies about the two states’ COVID death toll and the educational and economic fallout. DeSantis seems to be a pretty terrible debater from what little I’ve seen of him onstage.

But personally, I don’t think any Democrat should appear on Fox News. Ever. Even people like Pete Buttigieg, who is notably great at rebutting the network’s stable of liars. To appear on Fox is to lend credibility to the lie that it’s a legitimate news network and help it sell ads.

If I ran the zoo, I’d have used the occasion of the network’s nearly $1 billion settlement for spreading lies about voting machines to rescind its employees’ White House press credentials. Let them shriek like scalded gerbils about being censored — when do they not?

Fox News is bad for America, period. So don’t help them.

Politico claims Newsom’s team specified that Sean Hannity should serve as debate moderator. I assume that’s because Newsom knows Hannity has the intellectual heft and strategic acumen of a pool noodle.

But not everyone who works at Fox News is a literal blockhead like Hannity, and you can bet your ass the network’s most able propagandists will do everything they can to sandbag Newsom, including slanting the questions, giving them to DeSantis in advance and helping him memorize talking points.

Anyhoo, seems like a bad idea to me.

He Wakes Up Lying, and He Lies All Day

by WaterGirl|  August 3, 20231:18 pm| 136 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

He wakes up lying and he lies all day.

This could be a game show question, I think.  “Who is being referenced in this statement?”

I don’t actually watch game shows, but I know there is one where you have to answer “Who is …”  Or maybe “What is …” depending on the wording of the question?

There’s also another game show – or maybe it’s the same one – where the goal is to guess what the most people answered when they were asked that question.

I see “He wakes up lying, and he lies all day” and I absolutely know it’s about Trump.  I would really like to know if Trump would be how most people would answer that.  I suspect there are (ill-informed and disconnected from the truth) people who might answer Joe Biden, and that might be the best and simplest poll of all to make clear the percentage of people who will never vote for Joe Biden.

Oh, and is this true?

That didn't take long. Looks as if the DC grand jury is now rolling out separate indictments of Trump's co-conspirators. Really underscores Smith's resolve to charge, and try, Trump alone. The case is built for speed. It should in fact go to verdict well before Nov 2024.

— Harry Litman (@harrylitman) August 2, 2023

I clearly picked a bad time to have a crazy work deadline.  I am missing everything!

My thinking is that Jack Smith waited to see what judge would be assigned to the J6 case before deciding whether to indict the others now or not.  If it was not a great judge, he would wait because that judge could decide to pull the others into the original case – which would slow things down considerably.  But we got lucky with the draw for judge, so he feels safe in indicting the others.  I am wondering whether the 6 will be indicted together.  We may already know, and I just haven’t been able to read about it yet.

Weasel Whistles (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  August 3, 202312:18 pm| 105 Comments

This post is in: Elections 2024, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity, Trumpery

Was catching up on earlier posts and saw a twit embed from ambulatory cream cheese sculpture Hugh Hewitt that illustrates a particularly irritating (to me) weasel whistle:

Jack Smith, an American Javert, should be obliged to prosecute this case outside of the Beltway. Former President Trump deserves a fair trial on these unprecedented charges which will strike tens of millions of Americans as a political witch hunt.

Emphasis mine. What’s a weasel whistle? It’s a phrase I made up just now for the expression of second-hand grievance. It’s an attempt to speak on behalf of a group while simultaneously handling said group with tongs so as to avoid associating oneself with its possibly contagious stupidity.

In that construction, it’s not Hewitt who’s loathe to hold his party’s disgraced former POTUS and current 2024 frontrunner accountable in the prescribed manner. He’s pretending to cape for “tens of millions” of slack-jawed yokels who Hewitt knows will regard anything less than a Trump Restoration and presidency for life as a “political witch hunt.”

All manner of craven, ambitious dingleberries who want to profit from the Trump cult without getting the ick on them speak in the same way. FL Gov. DeFlated used a weasel whistle to justify making it even harder to register and vote after bragging that the state’s 2020 election was a model for the nation.

show full post on front page

He also sold the completely unnecessary multimillion-dollar election police force as necessary to restore confidence since lots of citizens are allegedly “concerned” about voter fraud. It’s a load of horseshit.

The latest indictment cites Trump’s “pervasive and destabilizing lies.” Hewitt’s meeping and DeFailure’s voter suppression bamboozles are examples of the fallout of those lies.

As a nation, I don’t think we’ll ever truly scrub out the Trump stain. It has indelibly marred America, like a greasy Trump Tower taco bowl tipped onto an unfortunate customer’s lap.

But to recover as best we can and move forward, we’ve got to stop catering to Trump’s idiot cult. Forget the so-called “forgotten man.” Maybe he was forgotten for good reason? Because he’s an obnoxious moron?

I say it’s past time to forget him again because he’s had his day — the endless diner interviews, the unwarranted toleration of babbling public idiocy, the laws supposedly crafted to assuage the “fuck your feelings” crowd’s fucking feelings. Enough, goddammit!

Bill and I watched baseball instead of news last night (fuck the fucking Yankees!), but from what I gather via brief snippets I’ve seen, most pundits don’t expect Trump’s J6 trial to change any minds. Maybe. It surely won’t dent the cultists’ armor of willful self-delusion.

But the trial of a former U.S. president will unquestionably be a sensational event. I remember the OJ Simpson trial, and even though I wasn’t especially interested and was out of the country for the denouement, nearly 30 years later, I remember how inescapable the coverage was, how everyone debated evidence and testimony and critiqued attorneys as if they were Court TV hosts.

We’re in a different media environment now, but I expect the coverage will be the OJ trial x infinity. Even if not a single cultist comes to their senses, maybe the public hashing of the evidence will lodge in normie brains, the way the description of Nicole Simpson’s dog’s “plaintive wail” still resides in mine decades later.

And maybe, just maybe, that will inspire an even clearer majority to say to hell with these belligerent, whiny dopes. Not just their criminal leader — the dumb followers too, and the craven weasels like Hewitt who demand deference to that jackass rabble. To hell with them all!
