Thursday Evening Open Thread: Quick Reminder

For folks who primarily consume right-wing media funded by billionaires, let me help on the Hunter issue and what's not been proven:

1. The committee has not found any direct evidence that President Biden personally benefited from any of his son’s biz dealings.

— Heidi Przybyla 🌺 (@HeidiReports) September 5, 2023

“National investigations, Politico” reporter:

a report released by Senate Republicans that found Hunter Biden's role on the board of Burisma "awkward" and at times "problematic" .. but provides no new evidence and found no instance of policy being altered as a result of his role."https://t.co/b1QoA2FXg0

Also no explanation on why there's no investigation here:https://t.co/XoEaEjy66m

Ethics experts say such a deal creates the appearance of potential payback for Kushner’s actions in the White House — or of a bid for future favor if … Trump runs for reelection.

Now he is:

— Heidi Przybyla 🌺 (@HeidiReports) September 5, 2023

Mr. Kushner played a leading role inside the Trump administration defending Crown Prince Mohammed after U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that he had approved the 2018 killing and dismemberment of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi columnist for The Washington Post and resident of Virginia who had criticized the kingdom’s rulers.

Mr. Kushner had also helped broker $110 billion in weapons sales to Saudi Arabia over 10 years. He helped protect those and other weapons deals from congressional outrage over the murder of Mr. Khashoggi and the humanitarian catastrophe created by the Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen.

Republicans Don’t Give Even the Slightest Fuck About Appearances Anymore

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

Republicans don’t appear to give even the slightest of fucks about appearances anymore.

Wisconsin: replace the official who oversees elections.

Hunter Biden is charged for crimes they don’t charge anyone else with.

Republicans plan impeachment of a President for no valid reason.

Supreme Court thumbs nose at ethics charges and channels the Bell Telephone motto from long ago: “We Don’t Care; We Don’t Have To.”

Wisconsin: impeach a newly elected justice because they know they won’t like her defense of democracy.

I’m sure we can come up with another hundred examples.

For Republicans, the concept of the rule of law is now a quaint memory of yesterday.

I see that postcard writing is starting for Ohio – and possibly for Virginia?

Here’s what I am aware of so far:

Postcards to Voters (H.E. Wolf and Mousebumples seem to be tuned into what’s going on there)

Vote Forward  (SusieC mentions a letter-writing campaign)

Postcard Patriots (MazeDancer, is Postcard Patriots handing out addresses and/or doing postcard designs?)

Any other groups writing postcards or letters that we should be aware of?

How much interest is there in regular postcard / letter writing parties?  Tuesday evenings?  Saturdays?  Some other time?

Also, if you are thinking about what actual postcards to write on, don’t forget that we have our BJ Pet Postcards!

Are there other ways to support Ohio?

Chime in below about postcards or letters – or anything else!

This post is in: 2024 Primaries, Elections 2024, Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity, The War On Women, Women's Rights

I won’t truly believe America is safe from the possibility that Ron DeSantis could win the 2024 GOP primary (and thus have a non-zero shot at becoming POTUS) until the day a living, breathing and un-incarcerated Trump accepts the nomination. (Frying pan, fire, etc.)

Truthfully, my anxiety will persist beyond that. Trump is so legally and actuarily imperiled that we shouldn’t discount his distant-though-closest, squintiest rival until the ballots are printed and the voting starts.

DeSantis isn’t giving up either. He’s preternaturally committed to this run. He’s still plodding around in cowboy boots he finds uncomfortable so he can look a bit taller. Before the campaign launch, he lost weight so rapidly he earned the nickname “Captain Ozempic” in Tallahassee. He is rumored to have given up not only dessert spoons but the pudding cups themselves.

show full post on front page

Also, I really hate to admit it, but the GOP debate guru seems to be working his magic because while DeSantis wasn’t especially impressive at the first GOP debate, it wasn’t a disaster. He often remembers to lower his naturally high-pitched, whiny voice down an octave (like the Theranos scam lady allegedly did). And he’s way better at controlling his rage around not-Fox News reporters.

Check out when Nora O’Donnell challenges him at about the 3:25 mark — you can see DeSantis almost launch into a snippy, condescending reply, but then his face goes blank as he mentally counts backwards from 20 or whatever the guru said to do in that situation.

But makeovers and remedial etiquette lessons only take you so far. DeSantis lost his fattest-cat donor due to his extremely hard-right policies, including the six-week abortion ban. O’Donnell questions him about that in the clip above; here’s the CBS News account in text form:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he does not support criminalizing women who receive abortions even after he signed a six-week abortion ban into law earlier this year that includes language that could be interpreted as such.

“We have no criminal penalty,” DeSantis, who is running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, told “CBS Evening News” anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell in an interview Tuesday. “The penalties are for the physician.”

Kudos to CBS for pointing out that the law is open to interpretation. Florida’s supermajority GOP statehouse churns out garbage laws that are intentionally vague and often don’t withstand judicial scrutiny outside of courts stocked with hard-right Fed-Soc hacks. Unfortunately, the fate of reproductive healthcare in the state is being decided by a hack court. (Jezebel)

On Friday, the Florida Supreme Court heard arguments in a lawsuit that could trigger a six-week abortion ban, which would devastate access for people in the South. One Justice, Charles Canady, is intimately familiar with the ban because his wife, state Rep. Jennifer Canady (R), co-sponsored it—and he didn’t recuse himself from the case.

Barbara Pariente, a former chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court, said in June that Canady should step aside. “I know Justice Canady to be of the highest ethics,” Pariente said. “I cannot imagine himself not recusing himself from a bill that his wife co-sponsored…”

Even if Canady had recused, things still wouldn’t look good for abortion access: Five of the seven justices were appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and several of them have personal ties to the anti-abortion movement. All five are members of the conservative Federalist Society, the same group that all of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court appointees belong to.

The shamelessness of elite right-wing legal hacks is surpassed only by the astounding credulity of their elite liberal and centrist colleagues. This appears to be true at the state level as well as the federal. Seriously, I never want to hear about the “highest ethics” of a forced birther judge ever again. They’re all liars.

No one should trust DeSantis on this because he lies a lot about specific policy questions. For example, when questioned by impudent reporters about the ramifications of the “don’t say gay” law when he first signed it, DeSantis angrily claimed people were overreacting because it would apply to grades K-3 only (though vague language caused broad administrative changes as school districts took ass-covering measures). A short time later, DeSantis asked his appointees in the state education department to expand it to all grades, which they immediately did. He just flat-out lied.

He’s lying about this “heartbeat” nonsense too, and it’s not surprising because “pro-life” activists lie all the time. They intentionally deceive scared girls and young women with their (now taxpayer funded) “crisis pregnancy centers” and lure them in for indoctrination. The ones who say “leave abortion law to the states” are lying because they would back a federal ban, and the ones who say they support a 15-week federal bans are lying about that too because they’d leave draconian state laws in place.

To quote Hannibal Lecter paraphrasing Marcus Aurelius, “Of each particular thing, ask what is it in itself? What is its nature? What does he do, this man you seek?” He lies. They all lie. That is their nature.

Alaska Public Media, “Rep. Mary Peltola’s husband dies after Alaska plane crash”:

U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola’s husband, 57-year-old Eugene “Buzzy” Peltola Jr., died awaiting rescue after the plane he was flying crashed Tuesday in remote Western Alaska, according to officials.

Anton McParland, Mary Peltola’s chief of staff, said in a statement posted on her social media accounts that she was returning to Alaska to be with her family after the crash.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, Eugene Peltola Jr. was the pilot and sole occupant of a Piper PA-18 Super Cub that crashed under “unknown circumstances” around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Peltola had flown a hunter and the hunter’s equipment to a remote location 64 miles away from the Western Alaska village of St. Mary’s…

Peltola was born in Bethel. He is Tlingit and Yup’ik and a member of the Orutsararmiut Native Council.

He could always be found behind the scenes as his wife campaigned to become the first Alaska Native woman to serve in Congress. But he was a trailblazer in his own right.

Peltola worked for more than three decades for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service in Bethel, eventually to become the first Alaska Native to oversee the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. Later, he served as regional director for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Alaska. Through much of his career, he advocated for subsistence hunting and fishing.

He retired last summer, as his wife was running for office. He recently joked that he was adjusting to his new job as “arm candy” to the congresswoman…

The congresswoman’s staff will continue to operate her office and meet with constituents while the family grieves, McParland said.

Another WH reporter lamented Trump’s loss in 2020. Said they don’t have as many contacts within the Biden Administration and it’ll hurt them with scoops.

Four years ago at the annual UTA gala in DC before the WH Correspondents Dinner, who was the person having the greatest time? Sean Spicer. Same man whose job was to lie on behalf of Trump, gaslight the world, and spur on hate against the press.

About two years ago was told by a TV producer they were looking for a conservative to fill out a roundtable political show. The bar was the following: they had to accept the 2020 election results & not be openly white supremacist. That’s it. Even with that low bar…it was tough.

All of this is to say the current media & reporting model is not built for this moment where one political party, the GOP, has become a radicalized authoritarian force beholden to minority rule. The old playbook won’t work. You need to be agile & adapt. 8 years on, still failing.

Yeah, that puts it well.

Next year, we will add significant budget funds for the defense industry – address by the President of Ukraine

13 September 2023 – 22:04

I wish you health, dear Ukrainians!

It was an important day. The Military Cabinet – there were some details that I cannot talk about now, but that will be very effective in the war.

I held a meeting with Prime Minister Shmyhal and Minister of Finance Marchenko on next year’s budget.

I outlined the key parameters – what should be prioritized in the state budget.

The key is to protect our state and people. Defense and security are the first priority, and the funding for defense and security will be at least at the level of this year, i.e. one trillion six hundred billion hryvnias. At least!

Next year, we will add significant budget funds for the defense industry – for the production of weapons in Ukraine. And for the drones. Both for the purchase of what is needed abroad and for the Ukrainian production. In addition, almost 100 billion hryvnias will be allocated for the production of weapons, overseen by the Ministry of Strategic Industry, and for the Ukrainian drone army, which is showing very good, impressive results. I will support all of this.

A separate budget priority is to support our veterans.

We also keep social expenditures as a priority. At least 469 billion hryvnias. There will be additional funds for the healthcare system – at least 24 billion plus to this year’s expenditures. There will be a plus for the education system, primarily to support teachers and lecturers.

We are investing the necessary funds in digitalization, including our Mriia, a new tool for children, parents, and teachers that we have already presented in advance. Next year, Mriia should be fully operational and available to Ukrainians in every corner of the world!

Of course, there will be a significant indexation of pensions – we plan to do it in March, as required by law.

But, in addition to all this, we place a very important economic emphasis in the budget. We are adding incentives for the economy – production, jobs, investments. All the things needed to help Ukraine recover faster.

Government officials will present the details of such incentives. This includes the connection to the power grid for investors, the continuation of grant programs, mortgage programs, and the development of Ukrainian industrial parks.

I instructed the Prime Minister to prepare the basis for raising the minimum wage in Ukraine in the first half of next year.

Absolutely all elements of state work must be adjusted so that we can determine the timing of the end of this war here in Ukraine ourselves. With our victory. Our weapons that will reach all the goals necessary for Ukraine. Our economy that will be able to provide Ukrainians with the jobs they need. Social functions of the state that must be fulfilled. State functionality, especially digital functionality, which must become more advanced than anywhere else in Europe. All these are our tools to bring Ukraine’s victory closer.

And our cooperation with our partners – with everyone in the world who is interested in peace with us.

Today I held a meeting on Ukraine’s integration with the European Union and NATO. Another meeting, a long meeting, was about preparing negotiations with partners, different ones: from the G7, from the Global South. All this will happen.

One more thing. As always, I want to thank our warriors. Today, I am especially grateful to our pilots. Well done, guys! We are all proud of you.

I thank everyone who fights and works for Ukraine! Everyone who is now in combat, at combat posts, on combat missions. I thank everyone who trains our troops, who produces weapons for Ukraine, who finds in the world everything that Ukraine needs. I thank you all!

Glory to Ukraine!

Like tens of thousands of Ukrainian children, the heroine of this video, 8-year-old Valya Zhurbenko, was kidnapped by russian invaders. Those Ukrainian children were separated from their families, forcibly taken to russia and Belarus, given up for adoption, deprived of the right to speak their native language and brought up in the ideology of ruscism – which equates to hatred of everything Ukrainian. Valya, like all these children, can only dream of reuniting with her parents, and returning to Ukraine. She can see her escape and her return to Ukraine only in her dreams. In other exciting news, the former Austrian minister who is a Putin aficionado relocated from Austria to Russia over the past month or so.

Austrian ex-minister Karin Kneissl moves to Russia with her ponies – BBC News https://t.co/UwPRnT3PxK

— Sarah Rainsford @sarahrainsfordbbc.bsky.social (@sarahrainsford) September 13, 2023

The BBC has details:

Austria’s pro-Russian former foreign minister Karin Kneissl is moving to St Petersburg, along with her two ponies.

Karin Kneissl had been living in Lebanon. She left government amidst a scandal that engulfed the far-right Austrian party that appointed her.

The ponies were flown to St Petersburg on a Russian military transport plane from Syria, she said.

Ms Kneissl said she had decided to move to Russia to run a think tank at St Petersburg University.

“I co-founded the Gorki centre and manage it,” Russia’s state-owned Tass news agency quoted Ms Kneissl as saying. “Since there is a lot of work there and it requires a lot of attention, I cannot do this in passing. I decided to move to St Petersburg for this work.”

Asked by the BBC about her move to Russia’s second city, she declined to comment. But she said on social media that living in Lebanon had been a temporary solution “to survive” and while she was commuting to Russia to teach.

Ms Kneissl is a noted animal lover. She said on social media that, because of sanctions against Syria and the security situation there, using a military transport plane was her only option to bring her ponies and other belongings to Russia.
