Suck One Down for Elon Cyberbeer - STOCKPILE

… Or one could buy a really terrible form of alcopop, apparently. Per Albert Burneko, at Defector:

You might not guess that Tesla Inc., famously the electric car company controlled by Elon Musk, would be a repository of beer brewing, bottling, or distribution expertise. After all, making and bottling and selling beer all seem like very different processes than making and selling electric cars! At the very least I do not think that electric car-making involves wort at any point.

You might then think that for this reason Tesla would, or anyway should, stick to making electric cars, and stay out of making and bottling and selling beer. Ah, but you see, you are suffering from a reasonable misunderstanding. Tesla’s real business isn’t making and selling electric cars any more than its real business is making and selling beer. Tesla’s real business—like that of several of Musk’s other companies—is creating opportunities for the sweatiest, most credulous, most eagerly bootlicking shit-for-brains who have ever lived to give appalling sums of money to Elon Musk in exchange for evidence that they have done so. …

… The beer is “Cyberbeer,” named for the Tesla company’s ugly and stupid Cybertruck and sold in bottles theoretically reflecting that truck’s (ugly and stupid) design; like everything else by Tesla this has been done poorly and with corny taste, so that what the bottles actually share with the Cybertruck, designwise, is the mere fact of being very dumb looking…

Here I want to reiterate that however many traits Cyberbeer might share with beer, it isn’t really a beer so much as a way of telling the world that you like Elon Musk very much. (It’s also, appropriately, only a Tesla product on the outside: The beer itself, the actual liquid included in this enterprise more-or-less coincidentally, comes from a California company called Buzzrock Brewing.) Accordingly, Cyberbeer isn’t priced like beer, a thing that it isn’t. A two-pack of the stuff, including two angular ceramic mugs that would be nightmares as actual drinking vessels, runs $150. This way not everybody can or will have it, giving Elon Musk’s fans all the inducement they need to buy it.

Is the Cyberbeer good, as beer? As a bottle of beer? That feels like an acutely ridiculous thing to even wonder about, given all I have just written. But also: The beer seems pretty bad…

War for Ukraine Day 632: The Left Bank of the Dnipro!

by Adam L Silverman|  November 17, 20238:52 pm| 27 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Just a quick housekeeping note: There are a lot of videos from the axes of contact between the Ukrainians and the Russians bouncing around social media. I’m not ignoring them, but I’m not posting them because the vast majority seem to have graphic imagery of Russian wounded or killed in action.

And here’s Zelensky commenting on Ukraine’s small but notable advance over the Dnipro river, with photos purportedly of some of the troops making the crossing. https://t.co/tDh9jD3lxm

— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) November 17, 2023

From The Financial Times:

Ukrainian forces have established several fortified bridgeheads on the Russian-occupied left bank of the Dnipro river in their most significant territorial advance for weeks in their otherwise stalled counteroffensive.

Ukraine’s military confirmed the advances in a statement on Friday without naming where they were.

“The Ukrainian marines, in co-operation with other units of the defence forces, managed to gain a foothold on several bridgeheads,” read the statement.

Russia also acknowledged the Ukrainian presence for the first time. Vladimir Saldo, the Moscow-appointed governor of Russian-occupied Kherson province, said on Telegram that Ukrainian forces were in one area, near the village of Krynky — 18 miles north-east of Kherson city.

A western official said on Thursday that Ukraine had moved “elements of three brigades” to the Russian-occupied east bank of the river, and confirmed reports last week by Russian military bloggers that Ukraine has moved some vehicles across.

A brigade typically numbers 2,000 to 5,000 soldiers but the official said the Ukrainian contingent probably consisted of “hundreds”.

The western official said Russian forces had not been able to push them back and the Ukrainians had established a “significant foothold” in the area.

Actively progressing with the United States on joint arms production – address by the President of Ukraine

17 November 2023 – 19:14

I wish you good health, dear Ukrainians!

Today, I held a Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff meeting, with a detailed report from the Minister of Defense on the upcoming year, the provision of defense forces. Every direction and aspect – ammunition, weapons, equipment, and accoutrements. What is currently in short supply and what objectively needs to be increased, taking into account plans of our active actions. The Minister of Strategic Industries reported on our own production of weapons and ammunition – the goal of increasing production is being achieved. This is crucial, and I am grateful to all the workers in our defense industry, as well as our partners who assist. We also discussed the implementation of the Ukrainian missile program, initiated in 2021. Everyone can see that its results are becoming more long-range and favorable for Ukraine each year, and unpleasant for the enemy, as it should be. There will be even more results.

By the way, we are actively progressing with the United States on joint arms production. During my visit to Washington, President Biden and I agreed on specific steps we can take together. This will undoubtedly strengthen both Americans and Ukrainians, as well as our partners. Joint production always enhances capabilities. In recent days, during negotiations involving Andriy Yermak and our government team, we discussed the specifics. In December of this year, a special conference involving Ukrainian and American industries, government officials, and other state actors will take place – everyone involved in organizing our defense. We are preparing a significant event, an extension of the Defense Industries Forum that took place in September. Now, it’s a forum in Washington and corresponding work on armaments in both Ukraine and the United States. I thank the United States – President Biden, his team, and Congress – both parties that support us. I also want to especially acknowledge U.S. defense companies and partners in Europe – all those who genuinely fill the concept of defending freedom with substance. During these times, we all need to be as effective as possible so that the lifetime of our children and grandchildren is not stolen by war.

Today, there is also good news regarding defense packages for our soldiers – Finland has made a decision on a new package. Thank you for this. We have already received 20 support packages from Finland. All of them strengthen not only us but the entire eastern flank of Europe. Because when Ukraine is strong and independent, all of Europe can feel protected from Russian aggression.

Important reports were presented at the Staff meeting regarding the situation on specific frontlines: Donetsk, Kharkiv, the southern directions. Reports were given by the Commander-in-Chief and Generals Syrsky, Tarnavsky, Moskaliov, and Sodol. I thank every one of our soldiers!

Today, I issued a separate instruction to the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff regarding responding to the carriers of ‘Kinzhals’ that disrupt our country for hours due to air alerts. Our air defense capabilities and overall readiness for missile threats allow us to modernize our response somewhat – without unnecessary interruptions to the country. This is important for millions of our people. I expect corresponding proposals.

And one more thing.

I started today with a special meeting with the Minister of Finance and government officials responsible for the education sector. Many sensitive issues, and millions of Ukrainian students are awaiting answers. This includes resources for scholarships and specific details about innovations in higher education. We also discussed everything necessary to strengthen vocational education in Ukraine. It was all very concrete, just as it should be on Students’ Day. Of course, it would be right that most of what we discussed will be presented by the Minister of Education. Good things. We guarantee scholarships for students and are exploring opportunities to increase them. We will find resources for the reconstruction of universities damaged or destroyed by Russian attacks. Today, I visited one of the Ukrainian universities – Mariupol State University. It has been relocated to Kyiv and is working. Importantly, it preserves faith in Ukraine, in our people, and in the belief that Ukraine will be free – all of Ukraine. I spoke with the students. Thank you for your sincerity and energy. I wish all our Ukrainian students to be able to realize themselves in Ukraine, for Ukraine, absolutely dignified, modern, and beneficial to themselves and the country.

To bring victory in this war, ensure security, and provide as much as possible protection to our people and our state… I thank everyone who fights and works for this. For our people. For our independence.

Glory to Ukraine!

Ukrainian Pres. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has gone public about the reduction in the supply of artillery shells to Ukraine, telling reporters that deliveries of the munitions have "really slowed down." https://t.co/r78Y3yhxIy

— ABC News (@ABC) November 17, 2023

From ABC News:

In a rare admission, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has gone public about the reduction in the supply of artillery shells to Ukraine, telling reporters that deliveries of the munitions have “really slowed down.”

The 155mm artillery shells are arguably the most important munition for Ukraine in its war with Russia.. Ukraine has always been outmatched by Russia’s superior artillery firepower, however this imbalance, which is key on the battlefield, is set to get worse.

In a briefing on Thursday, Western officials agreed with an estimate, attributed to Ukrainian officials, that Russia currently produces around a million artillery shells a day.

U.S. arms companies are ramping up production. However, according to The Economist, U.S. output of 155 mm shells in 2025 “is likely to be lower than that of Russia in 2024.”

European efforts to try and address the problem also appear to be falling short.

The German Defense Minister earlier this week warned that the European Union would fail to meet its pledge of providing a million rounds to Ukraine by March 2024.

Any further reduction of ammunition supplies to Ukrainian forces would limit Ukrainian troops’ ability to mount offensive operations as well as increase pressure on areas of the frontline where Russia is on the offensive.

Western officials on Thursday also conceded they were “concerned” about the supply of artillery ammunition to Ukraine. The officials claimed they had “always been concerned,” but it was a change in tone on the topic, compared to previous briefings.

President Zelenskyy, in comments to journalists Thursday said “warehouses are empty” in allied nations which have been supplying Ukraine with the shells.

Israel’s war in Gaza and tensions on its northern border with Lebanon have also put pressure on U.S. stocks, with some supplies of artillery shells, which were designated for Ukraine in recent weeks, being diverted to Israel.

In a reference to the increased pressure on production and supply of the munitions, Zelenskyy said “everyone is fighting” for stockpiles.

It is true that, for months, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that their ability to fire artillery shells has always been way lower than their Russian enemy.

And as the war has dragged on, the supply of 155mm shells to Ukraine inevitably has come under greater pressure, with the U.S. calling on other allies, namely South Korea to help out.

However, Zelenskyy’s warning comes amid the row in Congress over continuing funding for the war in Ukraine.

If the Biden Administration cannot keep military aid flowing to Ukraine, the situation could get a lot worse.

Again, and I’m unfortunately sure that I’ll be back to this topic sooner rather than later, almost two years into Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s genocidal re-invasion and we are still failing. That the US defense industrial base has not been put on a war footing 21 months into this part of the world war we’ve been in for years is both strategic malpractice and unacceptable. At some point it would make sense for the Biden administration to adopt John Wesley’s maxim: “I am always haste, I am never in a hurry.”

When you protect your nation, the global holiday cheer is replaced by hard work in the trenches.

Tatarigami has taken a deep dive into Russian rotary wing operations. First tweet from the thread and the rest from the Thread Reader App.

Amid the ongoing debate about the number of operational Ka-52 helicopters on the frontlines, I've analyzed and compiled imagery of bases used for helicopter operations by the Russians. The findings are summarized in this 🧵Thread:

1/ pic.twitter.com/FV0F1tcf3W

— Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) November 17, 2023

2/ Based on acquired Maxar images from November 1st, the Taganrog airbase hosted at least 4 operational Ka-52 helicopters on its tarmac. The surrounding activity indicates their use, a fact further supported by their absence in earlier shots.Image
3/ The Buturlinovka Airbase accommodates a minimum of 5 Ka-52 helicopters. Although Helicopter #7 is not distinctly visible in this image, the next image includes a slightly older photo of the same helicopter at the same location for clarity.Image
4/ Identifying helicopters in high-resolution imagery (0.5 – 1m) can be challenging, but certain distinct characteristics help with recognition: fuselage length, two coaxial rotors, a shorter tail, and a unique frontal shape, among others.Image
5/ Zernograd airbase, the home of the 16th Army Aviation Brigade, currently houses approximately 8 additional Ka-52 helicopters.Image
6/ In these calculations, I excluded several Ka-52 helicopters undergoing repairs or maintenance, evident from the missing rotor blades. Additionally, for OPSEC reasons, I didn’t account for 2 more Ka-52 helicopters located at FARP.Image
7/ The scope of my analysis focuses on the operational Ka-52 helicopters on the frontlines. I didn’t add helicopters located in other regions of Russia, such as Central Russia and the Far East.Image
8/ With a 90% confidence level and error not exceeding 30%, presented evidence strongly indicates that Russia still maintains operational Ka-52 helicopters.Image
9/ Both the Ka-52 and numerous Mi-28 helicopters continue to pose a significant threat to Ukrainian forces along the frontline. Their ability to deploy LMUR and Vikhr missiles extends their reach, enabling them to engage targets beyond the range of SHORADImage
10/ Moving on to the next base, Rovenki Airbase, traditionally home to a substantial number of helicopters, has recently dispersed its helicopters in response to emerging threats, due to its proximity to the border.Image
11/ In October and early November, Rovenki Airbase accommodated more than three Ka-52 helicopters. I counted only three Ka-52 helicopters, excluding those with missing blades, as their operational status is hard to determineImage
12/ Kirovske Airbase in Crimea housed a total of 6 Ka-52 helicopters.Image
13/ Let’s assume that roughly 30% of the helicopters I’ve identified could be duplicates (the same helicopter at different locations and times), partially or fully inoperable, or mistakenly identified.Image
14/ Rounding gives us around 8 helicopters. Even assuming 8 were included wrongly, we still have 17 operational helicopters. Therefore, claims suggesting there are no or only a few functional Ka-52s are invalid.Image
15/ In summary, satellite evidence collectively indicates that Russia currently maintains a fleet of at least 25 operational Ka-52 helicopters, with the actual number likely much higher.Image

That’s enough for tonight.

Things that need to be said, even if it’s probably more important to Musk that Twitter’s been hemorrhaging advertisers. Per CNN Business:

A growing list of companies said they have suspended advertising on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

On Friday, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN, confirmed that they both halted ad spending on the platform.

The decision by two of the world’s most prominent film and television companies suggests an intensifying advertiser backlash to X after the social media platform’s owner, Elon Musk, embraced an antisemitic conspiracy theory popular among White supremacists.

Disney and Warner Bros.’ advertising pauses follow similar moves by Lionsgate and IBM…

IBM’s ads were found appearing alongside pro-Nazi content on the platform. In a statement, IBM explicitly called out what it described as an “entirely unacceptable situation.”

“IBM has zero tolerance for hate speech and discrimination and we have immediately suspended all advertising on X while we investigate this entirely unacceptable situation,” an IBM spokesperson said…

Amid the pullback, X reportedly lost one of its most visible advertisers: Apple. The iPhone maker also pulled its advertising from the social media platform, according to multiple news outlets, including Axios, which first reported Apple’s withdrawal…

“At risk of stating the obvious, anyone advocating the genocide of *any* group will be suspended from this platform,” Musk wrote on X Friday evening…

A spokesperson for X said the pro-Nazi accounts identified in Thursday’s Media Matters report would no longer be eligible for monetization, meaning ads would no longer be run on those pages…

Everyone is so judge-y these days! How was a smol bean who grew up in apartheid South Africa supposed to know that antisemitism is no longer considered a social positive?

Bluesky Update

by Major Major Major Major|  November 17, 20237:18 pm| 108 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Science & Technology, Tech News & Issues, Tech News and Issues, Technology

There have been some big developments at Bluesky lately, so I figured I’d drop an update on it, since there’s a good chance you’ll start seeing a lot from there soon. (For those who don’t know, Bluesky is a hip new federated social network in the style of Twitter. I wrote an explainer about it in July here, which is rather long but nothing in it is inaccurate. The project began in-house at Twitter intended as a way to open-source the network, then spun off into their own company.)

I’ve been excited about Bluesky for a while now because it is in many ways a piece of technology I’d been waiting for for years. They’ve learned from the failings of prior attempts at big decentralized social networks, such as Mastodon, and are focusing on meeting users where they’re at, which makes sense since its origin is literally a Twitter-built Twitter replacement. Why should you care? Well–we all know the harms that can be caused by centralized social networks run by billionaires. Some of those may be endemic to large networks, but others, such as what Musk has done to Twitter, and the very real problems this may cause in the world, are caused by centralized control. If you’re worried about Zuck or Musk or whoever having a stranglehold on communication, decentralization may be for you! People can’t own something that cannot be purchased. And while Bluesky is a company, the free and open-source software they have developed is not; “the company is a future adversary” is their motto. (See my post linked above for some key details on how Bluesky is not Mastodon.)

Bluesky offers exciting features like a free and open API, custom algorithms and feeds, multiple third-party apps and websites, account self-verification, and the overall online experience we’ve come to take for granted from a service that isn’t owned by a fascist. Still no gifs yet though.

So: recent developments!

Just yesterday was the anniversary of the first post, and they recently hit two million users, more than 200,000 of whom are active on any given day, which is pretty good.

More importantly: they’ll soon be releasing a public website for viewing posts, allegedly around the end of November. It will still be an invite-only service (although those are fairly easy to come by these days), but once that releases, it will be easily accessible to people who aren’t dweebs. I say “people who aren’t dweebs” because almost everything you do there has been public the entire time, via API. For example, here are all posts about cats in real-time. But a public website will still be a big deal. It will greatly expand the visibility of the network, presumably letting you embed posts in articles and the like. The lack of this feature has been a barrier to adoption for many people (as well as a comfort to others), so this will change the world’s relationship with Bluesky in, hopefully, a big and good way.

The second bit of important (to me, haha) news is that they’ve basically finalized the federation architecture, and plan to open the network up to third parties early next year, once they’ve released their moderation software. What will this mean for the users of bsky.social? Nothing, if the team has done their jobs correctly. For everyone else, it offers some exciting possibilities. You’d be able to run your own service, or hop onto a service run by somebody else, which integrates with bsky.social and offers an experience that is, if you want it to be, indistinguishable from being on bsky.social. Or, it could offer a totally different experience. It’s customizable on so many different layers that with any luck there will be something for everyone. They accomplish this with some interesting architectural decisions. Let’s dive into that below the fold.

show full post on front page

There are three primary services that make up the ATProto ecosystem.

The first is simple enough–your Personal Data Server, or PDS. This is the database where all your actions live–posts, follows, likes, blocks, etc.* Everybody has one. They are meant to be as lightweight as possible.

The second is the Relay, aka BGS, aka Aggregator. This is a large and complex machine that receives notifications from PDS’s and preprocesses them for distribution. So if I make a post, my client sends it to my PDS, which signs it and stores it. Then, my PDS notifies the Relay about this post once (there is only one Relay right now, and will probably only be one for a while). The Relay updates its internals accordingly. If I’ve included an image, the Relay stores it in its Content Delivery Network for efficient distribution. Etc.

The third service is the App View. This is what provides the user experience. When I load the Bluesky app or website, it tells the App View, okay, get me what I need. The App View reads from the Relay stream and manages its own cache of user timelines; it deals with all the performance concerns and is the most complex machine in the ecosystem. (In some circumstances, a handful of requests may make it all the way back to my PDS.) Then it applies various app-level rules, for example, removing all posts by people who have blocked me. Finally it sends them to my phone or browser, which displays them to me. (Muted words, filtering of NSFW content, etc. happen on my device.)

This architecture addresses many of the problems with things like Mastodon and Nostr, which rely heavily on node-to-node communication. By making efficient aggregator Relays the centerpiece of the network, they’ve struck a fine compromise between distributability and usability, in my opinion. The downside is that only people with money can run a Relay, though this is in some ways its own form of protection against petty drama.

Another method for minimizing petty drama is that it is/will be very frictionless to change your host. Your PDS’s data is certified by two cryptographic keys–the one that the host service has, and the one that overrides it, which you have. If you don’t like your host, you can just move your data by signing a message to that effect with your recovery key. Presumably there will be an easy-to-use service that provides this functionality by the time they launch federation. Contrast with Mastodon, where moving your data requires the consent of your former host and your new host, and only moves your followers, not your posts. When you migrate a PDS, you migrate everything, more or less instantly.

And what will federation look like? The main Relay will begin processing messages from PDS’s that are not owned by bsky.social. By default, I suspect, you will log into the same website, read from the same Relay, and pass through the same AppView, as everybody else. But this is all completely client-configurable. If bsky.social starts serving ads, you can switch to an AppView or client that blocks them. Don’t want to see content from fascism.net? AppView or client, assuming the Relay even accepts their posts. Don’t want to see pictures of hedgehogs? The protocol currently supports freeform labeling of posts and users, though to my knowledge it’s only used for NSFW, spam, etc. In the future, there will be labeling services you can subscribe to, that might say “oh this picture is of a hedgehog” or “this person is a hedgehog enthusiast”. At the AppView or client layers, the labelers you’ve subscribed to, and your rules about those labels, will be applied.

And the cool thing is, as of this week, it’s all been released to production. Everybody has their own PDS database that lives in one of ten bsky.social-managed hosts. The PDS’s were migrated out of a monolithic database via the recovery keys. Each PDS broadcasts user events to the bsky.social Relay. The bsky.social AppView reads from the Relay and sends things to your phone. Turning on federation might be as simple as flipping a switch. And that’s where the rubber will hit the road (or the shit and the fan), and Bluesky will sink or swim.

The bsky.social PDS hosts are all named after mushrooms. I ended up on shiitake, which is the least-cool one (I was hoping for puffball or inkcap), but what’re you going to do? Word on the street is that this naming scheme is a reference to a nonsensical viral tumblr post where a mushroom, when threatened, says, “you cannot kill me in a way that matters.” That is the hope for this network. The technology is out there; it’s free; it’s running right now; they’re opening it to everyone soon. It won’t matter who owns Bluesky PBLLC or whether Jack sits on the board. No one person, we hope, can ruin this thing in a way that matters. It’s billionaire-proof by design, after all.

Stay tuned!

The Actual Truth (Open Thread)

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics

Yesterday, I posted this comment in the overnight thread:

So, Elon Musk endorsed the Great Replacement theory yesterday (CNN):

An X post Wednesday afternoon said: “Jewish communties (sic) have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them.” The post also referenced “hordes of minorities” flooding Western countries, a popular antisemitic conspiracy theory.

In response, Musk said: “You have said the actual truth.”

The “actual truth” is that Musk — an increasingly deranged, bigoted oligarch — controls a communication platform that could easily become a worldwide Radio Rwanda. Oh, and also receives billions in U.S. government contracts for satellite communications and NASA support, a situation I desperately hope someone in the government is reevaluating.

Since politicians are policing the language of every powerless lefty campus group (some of whom, I should note, deserve the criticism), I thought Musk’s casual endorsement of the ideology expressed by the Tree of Life synagogue shooter should get more attention.

Well, now it is: (CNBC)

The White House on Friday lashed out at Elon Musk for promoting “Antisemitic and racist hate” after the Tesla CEO and X Corp. owner said he agreed with a social media post accusing “Jewish communities” of pushing “hatred against whites.”

White House spokesman Andrew Bates said it was “unacceptable to repeat the hideous lie behind the most fatal act of Antisemitism in American history at any time.”

“We condemn this abhorrent promotion of Antisemitic and racist hate in the strongest terms, which runs against our core values as Americans,” Bates said.

The White House’s statement noted the proximity of Musk’s post to the deadly attacks in Israel by Hamas on Oct. 7, which it described as “the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”

“We all have a responsibility to bring people together against hate, and an obligation to speak out against anyone who attacks the dignity of their fellow Americans and compromises the safety of our communities,” Bates said.

The White House spokesman has said the actual actual truth.

Biden called in to a meeting of DNC and campaign staff today and “expressed appreciation to law enforcement who kept everyone
inside the DNC safe last night,” including members of Congress, White House says. https://t.co/8fpyJaSWhk

Fifteen minutes of fame — at least among their equally ill-informed peers. Per the local paper (the Washington Post):

At least one person was arrested when demonstrators calling for a cease-fire in Gaza “illegally and violently” protested outside the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee on Wednesday night, U.S. Capitol Police said.

Lawmakers who were inside the building in Southeast D.C. for a fundraiser said on X, formerly Twitter, that Capitol police evacuated them from the building. Capitol Police said that all members of Congress were evacuated from the area.

Demonstration organizers said at least 100 participants suffered injuries after being pepper-sprayed and pushed by police. Six officers suffered injuries after being pepper-sprayed and punched, police said on social media.

Organizers for Jewish Voice for Peace Action, which describes itself as the largest progressive Jewish anti-Zionist organization in the world, said protesters arrived outside the DNC building at 430 South Capitol St. SE about 7 p.m. after a candlelight vigil at 3rd Street and Maryland Avenue SW…

Capitol Police spokespeople could not be reached for comment, but the agency said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “our officers are working to keep back approximately 150 people who are illegally and violently protesting in the area of Canal Street and Ivy Street, SE.”

The demonstration was one of several across the nation since the attack on Israel by Hamas on Oct. 7 and Israel’s blockade and recurring strikes against Gaza.

‘Jewish Voices for Peace Action’ is, to say the least, extremely sketchy — I’m glad the Capitol Police defused their attempt to incite violence.

Major props to @daveweigel, who did what great reporters do in that fracas outside the DNC. He reported what happened and then defended the truth against a torrent of instant misinformation.

There was a vigil nearby; when it ended, protesters walked to the DNC. A small group was already protesting at one entrance, but the protesters, surprising the police, moved around them and ran to block the main and other entrances. https://t.co/fSGndYleZX

The mid-October sit-in at the Cannon rotunda didn't get this reaction, but the tactics on Wednesday – blocking entrances to DNC, resisting police as they pulled them off – have been roundly denounced by Dems.

— David Weigel (@daveweigel) November 16, 2023

You have the Constitutional right to peaceably assemble and protest. But blocking all entries to a building with multiple members of Congress in it, protected by Capitol Police officers who have lived through January 6 is putting you and other innocent people at risk. /2

— Sean Casten (@SeanCasten) November 16, 2023

I am grateful for the USCP’s professionalism and that all were safely evacuated. I’m also keenly aware that it could have been much worse. Americans have a right to assemble and protest. But PLEASE do so at a safe distance and respect local police orders. /fin

re this House lockdown – the DNC is two blocks from the House office buildings. SOP to do this if there's a protest nearby but if you were on the House side you couldn't even see this protest down the street. pic.twitter.com/GbHVnaRzHW

Worth putting up one last explanation here: I was responding to a polite, pedantic tweet questioning whether "the building was surrounded." Protesters were strategically blocking the entrances, but there were not enough protesters to entirely encircle the building. pic.twitter.com/bET7da6nCM
