War for Ukraine Day 629: A Brief(ish) Tuesday Night Update

The House managed to pass this whacked out two part continuing resolution that keeps part of the government open until the middle of January and the rest open until the beginning of February. I am amazed it passed. Anyhow, the House GOP majority now has two different hostages to ransom or kill at the beginning of 2024. What did not pass was any supplemental funding for Ukraine or Israel. Soon the remaining $1 billion from the last Ukraine aid bill will run out and with it the Biden administration’s ability to resource Ukraine’s defense against Putin’s genocidal re-invasion.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump. (emphasis mine)

Each of our warriors holding positions near Avdiivka deserves our utmost gratitude – address by the President of Ukraine

14 November 2023 – 22:19

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

A report for this day. First of all, our warriors. Today, the intelligence service, the Commander-in-Chief, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the Minister of Defense reported on the conference call. The overall situation at the front, particular directions. Ammunition, equipment – everything for the front. Avdiivka, Kupyansk, Bakhmut. Also the southern directions. Russian assaults are very intense, especially in Donetsk region.

We have to realize that Putin has a very cynical and specific political goal right now, and he is willing to kill as many of his people as he needs to because he wants to show at least some tactical results in the first half of December. That’s when he plans to announce his elections. Russia is already losing soldiers and equipment near Avdiivka faster and on a larger scale than, for example, near Bakhmut. It is extremely difficult to withstand this onslaught. And each of our warriors holding the positions, each of our warriors performing combat missions there deserves our utmost gratitude. They are true heroes!

The more Russian forces are destroyed near Avdiivka now, the worse the overall situation and the overall course of this war will be for the enemy.

I would like to particularly recognize the warriors of the 53rd and 110th separate mechanized brigades and the artillerymen of the 55th separate artillery brigade. All of them are fighting in the Avdiivka sector and have provided Ukraine with the best results these days. Thank you, warriors!

I would also like to recognize the brigades fighting in other areas that deserve our gratitude. This is the 57th separate motorized infantry brigade, whose warriors are defending the Kupyansk direction. They are very powerful. Thank you! My gratitude also goes to the 68th separate jaeger brigade in the Lyman sector. Well done, guys! And, of course, the Bakhmut sector. The artillery of the 26th brigade, the 92nd separate assault brigade and the 30th separate mechanized brigade. I thank you all, warriors!

We continue to work with our partners, especially in the United States, to ensure that support for Ukraine is maintained at the level that is needed now. I am grateful to our partners for their understanding of Ukraine’s needs.

These days, the Ukrainian delegation is in Washington. First Deputy Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, Head of the Office Andriy Yermak, representatives of the Ministry of Justice and our teams are advocating, among other things, for stronger sanctions against Russia and the use of Russia’s frozen assets to support our country.

Important meetings took place: the U.S. Secretary of State and his team, national security advisors to the President of the United States and the leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, representatives of American civil society, and heads of international financial and development institutions. We are preparing for the next year.

It will not be easy. We are aware of this. But we are doing everything to ensure that Ukraine’s position remains solid. And in the coming weeks, respective work with European and other partners is planned.

A few more things.

Today, I will highlight the work of our entire team and those who helped to rescue Ukrainian citizens from the Gaza Strip. This is a very, very complex, sensitive, multi-level operation. More than 200 people have been rescued. We are preparing the next groups for evacuation.

I want to thank everyone. I thank the Egyptian and Israeli authorities, Ukrainian diplomats who are involved and effective, SkyUp, which has been very helpful, and I would also like to personally thank Rabbi Jonathan Markovitch. And, of course, the officers of the Main Intelligence Directorate, who are performing the relevant tasks on the ground and here in Ukraine. Thank you all very, very much!

Ukraine’s success in such operations once again demonstrates to the world how much our country values its citizens, wherever they are, and how effective our state institutions are.

Today, I also held a meeting with international relations experts and government officials to prepare for the second summit of our globally important humanitarian initiative “Grain from Ukraine”. Ukraine not only maintains its role as a guarantor of global food security. Our maritime exports through the new corridor have already reached almost 4 million tons of cargo. But we also remember that we can contribute to greater stability in the world by helping with food supplies to those in need. In particular, in Africa.

We are uniting our partners around this humanitarian initiative. More news to come soon.

And today I met with journalists from Africa – a large group… 11 countries of the continent, different parts of Africa, leading media. I thank you for your attention to Ukraine and I believe that the world majority will always be with Ukraine in its defense against aggression and in the defense of international law.

Glory to everyone who fights for Ukraine, who saves human lives! Thank you to everyone who helps!

Glory to Ukraine!

According to it, everything that Russians touch is being poisoned: food, alcohol, vapes. Energy drinks that are mixed with sulphur.

Romanov suggests people caught doing this should be killed (in their own country).

After he was kidnapped and turtured they took him for execution and shot three times from a 9mm gun.

Major discovery in reference to a worldwide corruption scheme controlled by the Kremlin. The first episodes are all bombshells, starting with a German:

Hubert Seipel, one of the most Pro-Russian mouthpieces in Germany, hid that he received 600,000 Euro from the Kremlin. He is notoriously famous for being invited in German TV talk show just to declaim every single Russian lie imaginable. The money was funneled through a mailbox company in Cyprus.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. The so-called Cyprus Confidential are a major leak, showing how Russian oligarchs funneled money all over the world from Cyprus to influence and sometimes buy certain goods, including the allegiance of people such as Seipel. Expect more bombshells coming out from it.

Coming back to Seipel, this is another vivid example that the question is not whether individuals like him receive money from Moscow, the question is only how much they receive.

So, once upon a time, there was this girl Vera Pekhteleva from Russia’s Kemerovo.

She was 23 and she was a student.
And there was this guy Vladislav Kanius. Them two used to be a couple.

In January 2020, he tortured her to death for like 12 hours because she had left him, and local police ignored calls from people next door who were hearing her scream.

In the end, neighbours broke into their apartment only to see the guy drinking vodka next to her dead body.

He inflicted over 100 wounds upon her.

He was sentenced to 17 years behind bars and a 4 million roubles ($44,000) compensation to be paid off to the late girl’s family and the court of justice.

And you know what?

The guy served only like 6 months.

Vladimir Putin pardoned him, just like so many other convicts, because he had agreed to go to war and kill even more people in Ukraine.

And he ended up being one of those who survived the mean grinder. And he returned home clean before the law about a year after the murder.

Oh by the way, it’s in the news today that Putin also relieved him of his obligation to pay off compensation to the family for the girls he slew.

One could only guess why we Ukrainians want to stay a fucking galaxy away from what today’s Russia is and from what the Putin regime has turned it into.

Tuesday Night Open Thread: Government Shutdown Temporarily Averted

— Bill Pascrell, Jr. 🇺🇸🇺🇦 (@BillPascrell) November 14, 2023

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies. Per CBS News:

The House on Tuesday passed a two-step plan from Speaker Mike Johnson to fund federal agencies into the new year, sending the legislation to the Senate days before the approaching deadline to avert a government shutdown.

The short-term measure cleared the House in a 336 to 95 vote. Known as a continuing resolution, it received substantial support from House Democrats, who helped ensure its passage over the objections of dozens of Republicans. The bill is the first major piece of legislation the House has approved since Johnson became speaker.

The plan, which Johnson unveiled Saturday, extends federal funding at current levels for one group of agencies and programs through Jan. 19, and a second batch through Feb. 2. Johnson argued the extension will allow lawmakers to avoid a massive end-of-year spending bill while negotiations over spending levels continue…

show full post on front page

The resolution’s passage in the House all but eliminates the threat of a shutdown on Saturday, when most government funding expires. The Senate is expected to quickly approve the bill, which would allow President Biden to sign it into law before the deadline.

The House suspended its rules to pass the plan, raising the threshold for passage to two-thirds of the House. That meant Johnson, who was elected to lead the House just three weeks ago, had to rely on votes from dozens of Democratic lawmakers. Uncertainty about the bill’s fate was cleared up just before the vote on its passage, when Democratic leaders said in a joint statement they support it.

“We have consistently made clear that a government shutdown would hurt the economy, our national security and everyday Americans during a very fragile time and must be avoided,” they said. “To that end, House Democrats have repeatedly articulated that any continuing resolution must be set at the fiscal year 2023 spending level, be devoid of harmful cuts and free of extreme right-wing policy riders. The continuing resolution before the House today meets that criteria and we will support it.”…

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday that Johnson’s two-step plan is “untested,” but added that the White House’s goal is to “take the best path forward for the American people.” Mr. Biden separately has declined to say whether he would veto the short-term measure if it were sent to his desk, but he would have no incentive to shut down the government rather than extend current funding levels…

Capitol Hill Fight Club (Open Thread)

by Betty Cracker|  November 14, 20234:42 pm| 174 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Politics, Republican Stupidity

No elected official has thrashed a colleague with a cane on Capitol Hill lately, but things are getting spicy in a way that feels very late-1850s. Today there was alleged Repub-on-Repub violence on the House side, and a fistfight almost broke out during a Senate hearing between Teamsters president Sean O’Brien and Repub Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma.

Committee chair Bernie Sanders broke it up — his propensity for shouting coming in handy for once:

I was briefly a Teamster and I despise the Republican Party, so I’m definitely biased. But it sounds like Mullin was being a whiny-ass snowflake who inappropriately brought months-old Twitter trash talk into the hearing, which isn’t a shocker since he’s a member of the party of perpetually aggrieved and obnoxious wankers. An account of how it erupted from NBC News:

The exchange occurred when Mullin, a former MMA fighter, recalled an interaction he had with O’Brien in June on Twitter, now known as X.

At the time, they discussed engaging in an MMA fight for charity after they had gotten into a heated back-and-forth at a previous congressional hearing.

Mullin read aloud O’Brien’s original tweet during the hearing Tuesday, which said: “Greedy CEO who pretends like he’s self made. In reality, just a clown & fraud. Always has been, always will be. Quit the tough guy act in these senate hearings. You know where to find me. Anyplace, Anytime cowboy.”

The tweet also said “#LittleManSyndrome” and showed a photo of Mullin at a debate where he was standing on a pedestal at a podium.

After Sanders gaveled them into silence, the hearing went on, and NBC says the two agreed to have a coffee together. (Hopefully not at a shop with a large plate glass window.)

On the House side, former speaker Kevin McCarthy allegedly elbowed one of the GOP colleagues who deposed him in the kidneys: (WaPo)

…Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) came up behind Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and began yelling in his ear, accusing him of elbowing him in the back as they passed each other in a crowded hallway…

The episode between Burchett and McCarthy was not captured on video but was witnessed by numerous reporters.

“Hey Kevin, why did you walk behind me and elbow me in the back?” Burchett asked as The Washington Post interviewed McCarthy. “You have no guts.”

“I didn’t do that,” McCarthy replied. As Burchett continued to yell, McCarthy laughed and said, “Oh my God.”

Burchett was among eight Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy as House speaker, a rebuke the California lawmaker has bitterly noted, publicly and privately.

“You are so pathetic,” Burchett said before slowing his steps to no longer be directly behind McCarthy.

“Thank you, Tim,” McCarthy said.

Afterward on CNN, Burchett said: “I got elbowed in the back and it kind of caught me off guard cause it was a clean shot to the kidneys.”

Great job, everybody!

And here is my seasonal plea to mulch not rake your leaves:

I get discouraged this time of year because there are a lot of black plastic bags lined up on the streets, filled with raked leaves for the city to pick up. At the very least, I wish the city would NOT pick up leaves in plastic bags and require them to be in paper leaf bags.

Meanwhile at my house – the grassy areas get mulched and the gardens get to keep their leaves as natural habitats for beneficials, protection for plants against harsh winter temps and generally nice to look at.

Before:

show full post on front page

Mulching leaves is sooooo much easier than raking. Mulching the entire backyard took me all of 15 minutes. Setting the lawnmower on about a mid-setting (I use highest setting for normal grass cutting) and running over the leaves, mulches them right into the grass, providing natural fertilizer to break down over the winter months.

After:

This will probably need to be done again, as the many trees that still have leaves on them match the number that have lost their leaves. I’ll probably use the grass catcher on the next batch and dump the mulch into my garden beds.

Safety precautions with this: Leaves HIDE everything. I did two rounds around the backyard picking up dog toys, beef bones and sticks. I still managed to run over two of those stupid beef bones and numerous sticks. Safety glasses and long pants/sleeves are a  must when mulching leaves.

Consider this my seasonal plea to mulch not rake and trash your leaves. And if you feel you must trash them, buy those nice big paper leaf bags at the hardware store.

I’m not traveling this Thanksgiving – should we have a few recipe threads in honor of the feast of thanks?

This is a totally open thread!

War for Ukraine Day 628: The Ukrainians Move Against the Black PSYOP

by Adam L Silverman|  November 13, 20237:29 pm| 55 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

(Crest of the Security Service of Ukraine)

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has moved against the Russian funded Ukrainian network that was attempting to sell dirt to Rudy Giuliani. The SBU has begun charging members of this network with treason!

The Security Service and the DBR gathered evidence of a state betrayal by the People’s Deputy of Ukraine, who carried out information and subversive activities in favor of the rf.

According to the investigation, he had a call sign «Pinocchio» and was part of a criminal organization that formed the main department of the GRU of the Russian armed forces ( known as the GRU).

The main task of this organization – to shake the socio-political situation in Ukraine and discredit our state in the international arena. For this, the members of the group received money from military intelligence rf.

According to available data, network funding reached more than $ 10 million.

Within the pre-trial investigation, it is documented that the figure skater spread fakes about the supreme military-political leadership of our state. One example of misinformation work – the spread of fakes about the alleged interference of Ukrainian high-ranking officials in the 2019 US presidential election.

For « dispersal» pro-Russian narratives, he participated in the relevant press conferences.

It is established that the criminal organization was created by the Deputy Chief of the Russian GRU Vladimir Aleksiev as an agent network operating in the capital of Ukraine.

The operational leadership of the enemy group from the territory of the rf was carried out by his deputy – Alexei Savin.

According to the investigation, in addition to the People’s Deputy, the enemy group included exnardep Andriy Derkach, who fled abroad on the eve of a full-scale invasion.

This agency network also included former prosecutor Konstantin Kulik. He had a call sign «Bird » and is currently hiding from justice abroad. During the information sabotage against our state, Kulyk publicly engaged in pseudo-legal « justification of » fakes in favor of the Kremlin.

The subversive activities of the criminal organization in Kyiv were coordinated by the exponent of Derkach, a former employee of the game of the time of Srsr Igor Kolesnikov, who on the materials of the SBU has already been convicted and is serving a sentence for treason.

Currently, on the basis of the evidence gathered, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine informed a member of the criminal organization – MP – about the suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • part 1 article 111 (state betrayal);
  • part 1 article 255 ( creation, leadership of a criminal community or criminal organization, as well as participation in it).

Here’s analysis from Pwnallthethings from the Skyview app as BlueSky posts don’t embed here:

Pwnallthethings1h

Oh, this is a big deal:

Statement today from Ukraine’s SBU. It’s charging former Ukrainian lawmaker Derkach and former Ukrainian prosecutor Kulyk with treason against Ukraine ssu.gov.ua/novyny/za-ma…

The allegation here is that they were part of a network ultimately working for Russia’s GRU intelligence agency, and funded by them to the tune of about $10m or so.

Now why would you care? Bear with me on this

One of the allegations is what that group was tasked with. Specifically: “disinformation [namely] spreading fakes about the alleged interference of Ukrainian high-ranking officials in 2019 to influence the [2020] US presidential elections”

They’re talking about Guiliani’s 2019 meeting with Derkach abcnews.go.com/Politics/rud…

Giuliani in Ukraine with conservative news outlet in effort to discredit impeachment probeRudy Giuliani traveled to Ukraine this week as part of his ongoing effort to promote theories of Ukrainian election meddling as part of a conservative documentary series.abcnews.go.com

Giuliani is not named, and he is not accused of crimes by UA. But it is, in effect, Ukraine saying that it not only believes–but can and intends to prove–that Giuliani’s 2019 allegations about corrupt payments to Hunter Biden in 2019 were forgeries made by, and laundered to him, by Russia’s GRU.

It seems like the Ukrainians are closing in on the Black PSYOP we began discussing her back in October 2019. Now we wait to see if Ukraine indicts anyone on the US end of this op: Giuliani, Mac Isaac, Bannon, Guo, etc.

Here is President Zelenskyy’s address from earlier today. Video below, English transcript after the jump.

13 November 2023 – 20:34

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

The key takeaways from this day.

I met with the leader of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev – today is his birthday, he turned 80.

A decent man, a brave man. A defender of his people and the whole of Ukraine.

I awarded Mustafa Dzhemilev the title of Hero of Ukraine. I believe that it is absolutely well deserved. I also thanked him for what he has done for our people, for our freedom. He is truly a moral authority. I also thanked him for the fact that Mr. Mustafa-aga is now with us in the fight against Russian aggression.

Of course, we talked about Crimea and the protection of our people on the peninsula. We are mindful of all parts of our country and must restore freedom for the entire Ukraine without exception.

I thank everyone in the world who remembers that Russia’s attack on the rules-based international order began with Crimea. It was with the seizure of Crimea that Russia began this aggression and destabilization. And it is difficult to imagine a restored peace in the world unless we return to Ukraine what Russia has stolen. Restoring our territorial integrity is a global need.

Today, I held a long meeting with diplomats, government officials, and representatives of the Verkhovna Rada to discuss our country’s preparations for the European Council’s political decision to start negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. Our steps and our decisions. We are working to get an unconditioned decision to open negotiations. For Ukraine, it is a matter of principle to implement all the recommendations of the European Commission, all seven recommendations, and fulfill everything that is required at this point of our path to the European Union. The success of our country and people – economic, social, and success in building Ukraine’s relations with the world – can only be achieved as a common success of the whole of Europe. To this end, we are gradually strengthening our institutions and legislation, even during a full-scale war. And I am grateful to everyone who contributes to this, who endorses the relevant decisions, who puts them into action.

Today, I also held several meetings on our next international steps planned for the coming weeks. Negotiations with the leaders of partner countries, new support packages for our warriors, and international communication of Ukraine.

We can and must ensure an absolutely clear result: no matter what the information agenda of the world is, our partners must understand us and hear Ukrainians. And they will.

There is important news from Romania: an F-16 pilot training center has started operations, our guys will undergo training there. I thank President Iohannis of Romania and Prime Minister Rutte of the Netherlands for ensuring the implementation of all our agreements.

There were also intelligence reports today – by Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate Budanov and Chief of the Foreign Intelligence Service Lytvynenko. I am grateful to both of these agencies – to every single person serving there – above all, for the fact that Ukraine knows and will know the enemy’s plans and how to respond to them – properly and powerfully. Both on the ground and in the Black Sea.

And, of course, the frontline.

Avdiivka, Maryinka, Bakhmut direction, Lyman direction, Kupyansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson region…

It is challenging in each of these areas. But I thank everyone who is steadfast. I thank everyone who does not lose strength and positions. I thank all the commanders who care about the troops. I thank all the combat medics who save lives. I thank all our people who remember that Ukraine lives because there is someone to hold off the enemy.

Glory to our warriors! Glory to all our heroes!

Glory to Ukraine!

Mustafa Dzhemilev is a strong, worthy, and brave man who has committed his life to defending national liberty.

I wished him what we all wish: victory for Ukraine and freedom for our entire country. We are making every effort to bring the liberation of Crimea closer.

Held a productive call with my 🇦🇺 colleague @RichardMarlesMP.

We discussed Ukraine’s critical needs for winter, mainly air defence systems, artillery and more ammo.

We paid attention to another crucial point – anti-UAV systems.

Grateful to Australia for the constant political support, military assistance, and training of our soldiers.

This statement from Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs:

However hard we try to spin it, a ceasefire would be a victory for Putin. Ukraine will never stop fighting unless we choose to abandon them. The shameful proposal I am hearing is to feed the bear and invite him to come back later. That was my warning today in Brussels.

It is hard to say if it was a blunder, a sabotage, or news going out a bit too early than expected.

Monday Evening Open Thread: ‘Having Rights, Still Popular!

This post is in: Excellent Links, LGBTQ Rights Are Human Rights, Women's Rights Are Human Rights

Since Roe was struck down, I've had conversations with Really Smart Men who insist that the effect of Roe was "baked into" anticipated election results and we'd lose in 2022 and 2023. Yet here we are. At some point, folks are going to learn about Really Angry Women.

FAFO. https://t.co/uA4FSggrDD

— HawaiiDelilah™ ?? #MauiStrong ???????????? (@HawaiiDelilah) November 8, 2023

Didn’t get a chance to post this last week, but it’s still relevant. Alexandra Petri, national treasure, at the Washington Post — “Having rights still bewilderingly popular”:

Tuesday’s election results suggest that the Republican legislative strategy of “taking people’s rights away for no clear reason” was not an overwhelming success at the ballot box. Potential Childbearing Vessels on Legs contumaciously insist on continuing to see themselves as fully realized people deserving of the protection of the law, and, unfortunately, they can still vote, and some of them even have friends who vote with them.

Given the options of “people have constitutionally protected rights over their own bodies and the course of their own lives” or “people can potentially see those rights whisked away at any time without warning,” Ohio voters overwhelmingly preferred the first thing. Given the option of creating a Republican majority in their state legislature that could permit their governor to sign a 15-week abortion ban into law, Virginia voters refused, apparently indifferent to the fact that the governor would be wearing a fleece vest and speaking in soft tones when he did so!…

It has been suggested that this is why voting is such a flawed method for determining what ought to happen, and some people are working so hard to do away with it. “Let Dave decide everything on everyone else’s behalf,” while popular with Dave, tends not to be popular with everyone else. And the thing is, as Justice Samuel Alito noted in his Dobbs decision, “Women are not without electoral or political power.”

Tuesday’s election suggests that people being treated like people, rather than not, is still inexplicably popular. Who can say how long this fad will last? If through 2024, there might be more problems!

Speaking of the soothing power of sweater vests:

Youngkin pioneered the GOP's use of transphobia as a political weapon. It just may be a dud. https://t.co/TP9nQWT17i

Don't overlook this: The big victory in Virginia isn't just about abortion. It also shows that the reactionary "parents rights" nonsense has utterly fizzled.

I talked to Dems on the ground about how the right is alienating voters. 1/

— Greg Sargent (@ThePlumLineGS) November 8, 2023

… In Schuyler VanValkenburg’s ouster of Republican state Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant in a district near Richmond, “parents’ rights” loomed large because the GOP incumbent sponsored a law, signed by Youngkin, purportedly aimed at sexually explicit materials in schools that facilitated a rash of book removals.

Dunnavant accused her opponent of being willing to expose kids to such materials. But VanValkenburg took this head-on, running ads attacking that law and castigating book bans, while reassuring voters that as a high school teacher, he knows “the difference one book can make for a child.”

That suggests it’s politically potent to elevate the fight into a high-minded debate over the freedom of young minds to inquire, rather than letting Republicans drag it down into a muck of grubby accusations about porn in schools and “grooming” children.

VanValkenburg said he encountered many voters who perceived the right’s culture wars as not just a gratuitous attack on schools, but a broader effort to expand government intrusion into kids’ education. “The reason the book-banning is so visceral is that it hits on both those things,” he told me…

Then there’s Danica Roem, a delegate who on Tuesday was chosen by voters as the first openly transgender state senator in the South. She defeated a Republican who campaigned on banning transgender athletes from high school sports.

“She had every trans attack thrown at her, and she still won,” said Heather Williams, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee’s interim president. “These culture-war issues that Republicans are trying to lead on — they’re not where the country is.”…

Jeffries: What lesson was learned in Ohio? What lesson was learned in Virginia? What lesson was learned in Kentucky? Abortion is a choice that should be between a woman, her doctor, her faith, and her family. Not a bunch of extreme politicians pic.twitter.com/YHhoql5IGN
