Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

“But what about the lurkers?”

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Buzzard in a tree
The GOP debate is mercifully almost over, but God, what a snooze fest so far!

Random impressions:

  • Christie was disappointingly low key — he didn’t club anyone, not even once!
  • DeSantis is thrumming with manic serial killer energy — no big mistakes (damn it), but he reminded me of Blake Masters in that weird ad where he’s fondling a rifle.
  • Ramaswamy is a smarmy prick.
  • Pence is an insufferable pompous ass.
  • All of these assholes are shameless liars, including the moderators and audience.
  • Burgum is on Vicodin.
  • Tim Scott is a fanatic.
  • Nikki Haley is delusional.
  • Hutchinson is a sleazy hypocrite who almost certainly has a secret perversion.

That’s all I have to say about that. Now I can go back to watching Ina — woohoo!

War for Ukraine Day 546: Slow News Day or Schrodinger’s Prighozin

by Adam L Silverman|  August 23, 20238:43 pm| 69 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Military, Open Threads, Russia, Silverman on Security, War, War in Ukraine

Slow news day, huh? I’ve had another busy one and have at least one more tomorrow. I just got in. So I’m going to cover the big stuff and then hit publish.

Orchestra Wagner, which is one of the last not locked down official Wagner Telegram channels is confirming what has been reported: Evegeny Prigozhin is dead. I’ll get to that after the jump as I’m going to include machine translated screengrabs.

Here’s the President Zelenskyy’s address delivered to the Ukrainian and foreign press at the third summit of the Crimean platform earlier today. Video below, English excerpts/description after the jump.

We do not exchange our territories for any membership in any union – President of Ukraine

23 August 2023 – 21:22

Ukraine is fighting for the de-occupation of Crimea and all other Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied by Russia and is not ready to give up any of its lands in exchange for membership in any union. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting with media representatives in the framework of the 3rd Summit of the International Crimea Platform in Kyiv.

“My position is unequivocal: Crimea is Ukraine. We are fighting for Crimea and all other temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories and will not exchange our territories for any membership in any union,” the Head of State said.

He noted that the security and defense forces of Ukraine are conducting a counteroffensive to de-occupy our cities and villages, but this is a difficult task.

According to him, Ukraine has a constant need for artillery and long-range weapons, so the help of partners is very important.

“If we are talking about long-range weapons, we are working on it. Diplomats, the Head of the President’s Office, the Minister of Foreign Affairs have respective tasks. I am working on this in different directions. We are lobbying in different ways, but we will definitely get results. Just like we got serious missiles. Now that we are using them, it is no longer a secret. It was not easy. We have Storm Shadow. Just like with Rishi (Sunak – ed.), I negotiated with Emmanuel Macron about SCALP missiles. We have received SCALPs, they are working, the troops are very satisfied. Almost one hundred percent accuracy in hitting the enemy,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The President of Ukraine also spoke about plans to enhance security in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

“Diplomats have been tasked with preparing a security alliance of the Black Sea countries – not contrary to NATO, don’t think so: it is jointly with NATO countries. So that we have a joint defense of the Black Sea and Azov coasts against Russian aggression. I would even say: The Azov, Black Sea and Baltic space,” the Head of State emphasized.

Today Ukraine is celebrating Flag Day.
The flag of the brave, the flag of the steadfast, the flag of the free.
The flag of hope for liberation, the flag of faith in victory, the flag of a peaceful life in our native land. pic.twitter.com/8E6xeqkgeR

The 24th of August is Ukrainian Independence Day. Since it is after midnight in Ukraine, an early Happy Independence Day!

This afternoon, the Orchestra Wagner Telegram channel began posting regarding the downing of Prigozhin’s plane.

Here is the first post:

A little over 90 minutes later they posted:

9 minutes later:

90 minutes after that:

And two minutes after that:

They’ve also confirmed the original of the three Dmitry Utkins was also killed:

Anyhow, this is the final post for now on Orchestra Wagner’s Telegram channel:

Dmitri has video of the downing and the crash:

Doubt that any sane people will despair about this event. pic.twitter.com/uF2mKCliIG

— WarTranslated (@wartranslated) August 23, 2023

🧵1/3 The cause of Prigozhin's plane crash remains undetermined, but there have been assertions of air defenses involvement. The S-300 air defense unit is located roughly 50 km from the crash site, adds weight to this theory, though not as conclusive or final proof. pic.twitter.com/H3pgQIepcK

— Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) August 23, 2023

3/3 I include this information for context, but it doesn't reflect my final stance on the events.
However, I am personally inclined to believe that it wasn't accidental and that the airplane sustained damage while in the air.

— Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) August 23, 2023

It would. I already replied multiple times – I didn't say that it was hit by S-300. I just said that there are AD units in the area and provided visual evidence.

— Tatarigami_UA (@Tatarigami_UA) August 23, 2023

My take is that Prigozhin’s jet was definitely brought down. It is probable and plausible that he and Utkin were onboard and are now dead. It is also probable and plausible that Prigozhin faked his own death to go into hiding in order to get off of Putin’s radar. All of that said, Putin has done a very good job of removing everyone who could possible be a threat to him, be perceived as a legitimate potential replacement for him, or both. These men, and they have all been men, are either dead or, like Navalny, in prison. So he’s most likely dead, but let’s see what tomorrow’s reporting brings. Especially if there’s a body.

13,000 tons of grain were destroyed last night as a result of the eighth consecutive russian drone kamikaze attack on the infrastructure at the port of Izmail.

Several private grain terminals and warehouses, as well as cargo infrastructure, suffered damage. The agricultural products stored there were heading for Egypt and Romania.

In total, russians have destroyed 270,000 tons of grain over the course of a month. This is a cynical blow to global food security.

amazing how tucker had the biggest show in cable news and then got fired and now he's interviewing the prime minister of Nazilvania in a dirt hut and getting mid-ranking youtuber level numbers pic.twitter.com/RMwSA4toyl

— Gas Stove Prayer Warrior (@canderaid) August 21, 2023

T&T!!! has been a leading ‘trending topic’ on political twitter over the past few days, but I was more impressed by something commentor Princess said last night:

I don’t think there’s been enough attention on the reasons why Trump is too scared to attend and participate in the debate himself. This is a crowd of also-rans. 2015/16 Trump would crush these people like a bug. And yet he’s afraid to face them.

Given that every accusation is projection with him, I can only conclude that he is a much diminished man in the way he claims Biden to be. Of course the media is giving him a complete pass.

TFG should be at center stage, on his (former) favorite news station, dominating all mainstream media coverage tonight and into the weekend! Tucker should be beaming, leading the non-stop standing ovations!

Instead… ‘buzz’ of the afternoon is that the Tucker / Trump event will start five minutes before the RNC’s Milwaukee program, because T-T needs to scrape every wandering RW eyeball they can for a pre-recorded show. SAD!

Also, I wanted to share Evan Hurst’s brilliant Wonkette post — “Tucker In Eastern Europe Spreading Russian Propaganda, Just Like Good Old Days When He Had A Job”:

Why is Tucker Carlson trending on the internet today? Did somebody give him a job? You know, besides throwing the stick in the backyard for Donald Trump during Wednesday night’s Republican primary debate?

More specifically, why are people such as former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger calling Tucker a “traitor to the US”?

To answer these questions briefly: No, nobody gave Tucker a job, he’s still doing this pathetic “Tucker on Twitter” thing, because we guess he’s at a dead end, and sniffing Elon’s grundle is his rock bottom. But he did an interview with the president of Serbia, and in the process said a bunch of completely anti-American things that are pretty much indistinguishable from what any Russian spy or Kremlin official might say.

In other words, the old Tucker still exists, although he’s worse for the wear. You will see in this video that the past several months have taken their toll, or perhaps the past several months without Fox News hair and makeup have taken their toll. He looks old as shit, like he’s going to play Mitch McConnell in a Netflix biopic. ..

I salute you for that image, Mr. Hurst. Despite the nightmare it gave me.

I think we have just passed the tipping point on J6, the coup, everything.  It sure seems like the floodgates are opening, and it’s all gonna come out.

Does it seem that way to you?

I think they thought their bluff was going to continue to work, that they were really gonna get away with it,   Now that shit is getting real, they are turning on one another.  What is it about the Fulton County, GA case that it seems to have had this effect?  Or is it just timing, that it’s the 4th indictment, with possibly more to come?

What fun pieces of news about this have you heard today?  I have mostly had my nose to the grindstone today, so I would love to hear every juicy detail.

Short list of what I’ve heard: Mark Meadows was the ring-leader for J6, Employee #4 no longer has a Trump lawyer and has changed his tune, which screws Trump, Nauta and the cute guy whose name I can never remember.

BREAKING NEWS: India has successfully landed a spacecraft near the moon's south pole, becoming the fourth country to touch down on the lunar surface. https://t.co/lGLbGnbFpr

— The Associated Press (@AP) August 23, 2023

A brief happy detour from the Predictable Topic. Per Reuters:

An Indian spacecraft became the first to land on the rugged, unexplored south pole of the moon on Wednesday in a mission seen as crucial to lunar exploration and India’s standing as a space power, just days after a similar Russian lander crashed.

“This moment is unforgettable. It is phenomenal. This is a victory cry of a new India,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who waved the Indian flag as he watched the landing from South Africa where he is attending a BRICS summit, a group that joins Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Scientists and officials clapped, cheered and hugged each other as the spacecraft landed and people across India broke out in celebration, setting off firecrackers and dancing in the streets.

“India is on the moon,” said S. Somanath, chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as the Chandrayaan-3 landed, making India the fourth nation to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon after the United States, China and the former Soviet Union.

ISRO shared pictures from the spacecraft showing the moon’s surface and the leg and shadow of the lander.

Rough terrain makes a south pole landing difficult, but the region’s ice could supply fuel, oxygen and drinking water for future missions…

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson congratulated the ISRO on the landing.

“And congratulations to India on being the 4th country to successfully soft-land a spacecraft on the Moon,” he said on X, formerly Twitter. “We’re glad to be your partner on this mission!”…

Chandrayaan means “moon vehicle” in Hindi and Sanskrit. In 2019, ISRO’s Chandrayaan-2 mission successfully deployed an orbiter but its lander crashed.

The Chandrayaan-3 is expected to remain functional for two weeks, running a series of experiments including a spectrometer analysis of the mineral composition of the lunar surface…

Cheapest moon mission (The World Ranking):

1. Chandrayaan 3 – 615cr.
2. Luna – 1,650cr.
3. Chang'e – 2,476cr.
4. Apollo – 17,249cr.

– ISRO has created history which will be remembered forever…!! 🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/Ya9AUbUOq4
